Sound Card issue, or driver issue?

Q: Sound Card issue, or driver issue?

Well I just found this forum today, so I decided to ask this question.

About a year ago, I had to system restore, because my computer just kept FSODing on me. When I went through the system restore process with Dell, at the end of the process I got an error. I don't quite remember what it was, as it was so long ago.

Ever since then, my computer has been completely without sound. I have tried everything from installing/reinstalling/uninstalling drivers, to the most simplistic, such as checking if my speakers work, or are connected.

So far, nothing has brought me any closer to figuring out what this problem could be. I am pretty sure that somehow, my sound card (its an integrated one) has just fried or something, but I really dont know.

So... is my sound card busted? Or are my drivers just not working for some reason?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Preferred Solution: Sound Card issue, or driver issue?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

System restore . . .

System restore or system recovery? Did wipe the old operating system out and reinstall everything from scratch (system recovery) or did you use Windows' system restore to backdate the configuration. (Frankly, I think the choice these of terms by the industry are very confusing.)

Assuming system recovery and assuming the sound worked before and quit after system recovery, I'm for a misconfiguration. But, the simpler fix might be a cheap add-in sound card.

After upgrading to 7 I have been experiencing some random difficulties with my sound system. When going to my sound card properties, I notice that there is a generic name to the device, "High-Definition Audio Device". Before I upgraded (when I was on Vista) I'm sure that it said Realtek-something but I don't remember the exact device name.

I want to download a driver update for my sound card, but how do I find out which driver I need to download if the name of the sound card is not showing?

Thanks in advance

Just a quick bit of background info on my computer, running Windows XP SP3 with two accounts, one admin; one standard. Recently reinstalled Windows and went through the standard procedure of installing drivers etc. Although it was a little harder this time because the computer is incredibly old, it has dropped off the Packard Bell website (even the old FTP repo) so I had a little trouble finding the correct sound card driver. This led me to install a few different ones until I found one that worked.

This was great, until I rebooted the computer, and it no longer shows up as having a sound device; in the sound panel of Control Panel it shows up as 'No Audio Device'. However, if I switch to the other account, the one without administrator privileges (so I haven't installed anything through this account) the sound works fine. It shows up as 'SigmaTel Audio' and under the Hardware tab it labels it as 'Unimodem Half-Duplex Device'.

This seems strange, I wouldn't have thought it would be possible to install a driver for only one user, especially as I wasn't logged into that user when I was installing the driver...

Anyone got any hints?

I have been trying to get my sound card (Creative X-FI SB0460) to work under windows 7 x64, i have followed both a standard method of installation and the "Have disk" installation both failed, the "have disk" method reports it found driver but encountered an error then, fails with a "code 10" error, "the device cannot start".

It has identified my device as "creative x-fi audio processor(WDM)" rather than just "multimedia audio device", but not installed and drivers.

I have followed others advice in these forums but still cannot get it working, if this is a "terminal" issue and cannot be resolved can you please suggest alternatives sound cards for under $60/?30 please.

Also, why do manufactorers continue to do this? drivers have been a particular issue with the increase in componenets being released, but why does microsoft not kick up a fuss about the issue of driver compatability..... just seems to make microsoft and (creative etc) look incompetant and a lack of willingness to suport legacy and bespoke devices. why isnt this dealt with under windows update?

It also continues to inflate the ego's of all the apple products which just seem to work with new hardware.

A:Creative Sound card driver issue

First, your logic is flawed. It's not Microsoft's responsibility to work with whatever hardware, it's the hardware vendor's responsibility to work with the Operating System. Microsoft gives vendors years to bring their hardware and drivers up to be compatible with new technology systems. At one time Microsoft designed their Operating Systems to be backward compatible with old hardware/software. That is no longer the case.

"It has identified my device as "creative x-fi audio processor(WDM)" rather than just "multimedia audio device". That is the correct identification. The multimedia audio device is only part of the overal sound drivers.

In reference to Apple, they control both the hardware and Operating System thus it better work. However, with the number of problems posted about Mac's that I see on some other forums, I have to conclude the "apple works better" is a myth.

Back to your Xfi problem. Since it's being properly identified, it's back to the Creative drivers. Make sure you are using the correct OS drivers. Normally, Vista drivers will work with Windows 7 but I've seen Creative Xfi devices that must have Windows 7 specific drivers and if there are no Win 7 specific drivers it's time to find a new sound card.

I upgraded to win7 (64bit) and audio was functioning, perfectly. Then within a week, sound became crackly stopped working. I tested the speakers on another computer and they work fine. My mother board is an Asus P5GC-MX.

Looking in the System / Device Manager / System Devices, I see that a “High Definition Audio Controller” is present and working properly (says: device is working properly).
When I try to install the driver from Realtek (I tried 4 different versions including the latest version on their website being 2.42. (but shows this version on the error message 2.50 (R1.81), but none of them worked.

The most recent version of Realtek driver gave an error message of “No Driver Was Supported In This Driver Package”.

In the Control Panel, under SOUNDS, the Playback tab shows the message: “No Audio Devices are Installed”.

Please help me with this issue as I require sound for my seminars and I’ve been without sound for three weeks.

Thanks in adance.

I have an issue with my audio driver which probably comes from my motherboard's sound card (Asus M5A97 PLUS)
This happens almost everyday. At any time my pc audio and mic just cuts off,if I try to turn it back on by unpluging and pluging back in my headphones or mute and unmute from my audio mixer I get a constant ear screeching static noise.
The only way I can fix it is by switching my audio type from stereo to quadroponic and it is back to normal, but either couple of hours later or the next day the audio will cut off again. The mic just stays dead if it cuts off untill it fixes it's self.

Ocassionaly the whole audio driver will crash, afterwards I would have to restart my pc to fix it,but after I reboot,my audio driver has uninstalled it's self from my pc and I have no sound or mic at all. Then of course I just have to download and install the realtek hd audio driver.Sadly after the sound driver finishes installing and I reboot my pc there still isn't any sound so I just have to repeat the process until the sound is running again. And finally, everything is back to normal no problems same as always, but it's just a matter of time when it will cut off again so the cycle repeats.
(It can't be from my headphones(Razer Tiamat 2.2) because I tested them on a different pc and they were running perfectly)

Is it a problem with my motherboard's sound card?Because I have reinstalled my windows operating system once and this issue still occurs.

The computer's a year old, running XP, and my boyfriend and I have no idea what's wrong with it (it's his). I'd put in hardware support but I don't know which piece of hardware may be corrupted, exploding as we speak, or what.

It began last night. He's done this before -- he has two monitors, one meant for a TV (I believe) and another old computer screen. Normally it runs on the TV one because it's bigger. He switched to the older one to show me how he can adjust the settings so that it's all vertical. That was great and dandy and we didn't expect any issues. He's done it before and it really isn't doing much to the computer.

Later, after midnight, he goes to switch everything back to normal. First, the computer acts like the monitor is there but that it can't do anything -- it tries to go into sleep mode or something. Then I suggest he unplug, shut down, plug things back in normally, and power back up. This appears to work.

I was a bit happy then, until we got to the XP loading screen. It's going... and then after, it flashes, then goes black. Nothing comes up, nothing does anything.

And so the three hour saga of last night begins. We restart, we spam F8, we get into safe mode, he disables Nvidia but can't open the application. Nor does his mouse function in safe mode (I know some don't, but it really doesn't help the situation). I've used my laptop to bring up shortcut keys and we're functioning through everything that way. He restarts after disabling Nvidia, an... Read more

Hi There,

I'm trying to figure out if my sound card has gone bad. I have the red X of death on my speaker icon and the message "no audio output device is installed".

I have no option in the Device Manager for sound, video, and gaming devices.

I have no drivers on the machine and when I try to install the appropriate one, I'm told I have no device to install it on.

I'm assuming that the sound card has just finally died, however due to the frequent problem with Windows updates and the red X of death on the speaker icon, I figured I'd ask one of you more seasoned IT peeps.

I recently bought a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 PCI Soundcard. I bought it as an OEM so had no instructions come with it.

I am running Windows XP and after I installed the sound card and added the drivers I could hear no sound from my speakers (5.1 set-up). I have tried re-installing the drivers and updating the drivers which has not worked. I also removed the soundcard via device manager so that upon reboot it would be detected and re-install it, which also did not work.

Another thing I have also noticed, which I think is the main problem. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. Both, the Audio and Voice tab have the Sound Blaster Audigy listed for Sound Recording, but do not show it as an option for sound playback. Also, the volume tab is greyed out showing no devices whatsoever.

At the moment if i try to play something I can hear static coming from the speakers which suggests there is a connection and I have also check the wirering and that they are plugged into the correct jacks.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,

I am more confirming the probable here rather than an out and out question but...

Half a pint of Bulmer's Pear Cider met my laptop earlier today. We had sound this morning and after the incident we did not have sound.

To be more specific, the sound out of the speakers worked this morning - they no longer do. Headphone sound still works all fine and dandy.

Obviously the task is to get the speakers working again.

My suspicions are that the circuit between the speakers and the sound card has become shorted by the Cider. Solution? Is there one or am I doomed?

It should be noted that this happened when the laptop was on and using Windows 7. I normally use Ubuntu 10.4 - went to that and the same problem so definitely a hardware issue.

Thanks for any suggestions in advanced.

sounds like a device conflict. When he is at your house something is not connected that is when it's at home.

Try the sound card in a different pci slot, that should force a different irq for the sound card.

Hi, recently my laptop's sound card has been making a really strange crackling noise and I don't know what to do. It is a Conexant AC-Link Audio card. I've updated the drivers with Windows new update for it and it didn't help, thus I speculate what could be causing it. These are the two things which I think could be causing the card to make the noise (I know it isn't the speaker as I plugged in other speakers and they also had the noise). I've also disabled and re-enabled the card and Device Manager isn't coming up with any issues.

- When I went through airport security last week, when the laptop had to go through the bag check thing, it caused it as the laptop was on standby (the lid closed)

- The people I am visiting have new phones and I am thinking they could be setting it off too.

Any help would be appreciated as I don't know what to do.

I get a time out when trying to access your link.

Windows will get drivers (on line) for many devices and this sounds like what it did for your sound device.

If you are going to use this rather than the existing sound you have and it's integrated (on the motherboard) you should disable the integrated sound in the BIOS to avoid conflicts.

Audio is a low priority. So, for example, if you are playing a file that is maxing the cpu, audio would be one of the first things to indicate the PC can't process fast enough. Does it happen all of the time, or with specific content (or file)?

1st off my os is Win7 Home 32bit. I just reinstalled the YouTube downloader from my backup cd after the last C drive partition wipe. Everything has been reinstalled clean including the os. Windows is working just fine except for when I download a YouTube video with the downloader. The downloader doesn't record a peep of sound from any video I have tried. When I play the video on Firefox the sound is fine. I have an other video capture prog "Replay Video Capture" that normally can capture both video and sound from any source playing on the internet or a local player on the laptop. Replay isn't capturing the audio eather. Also Replay Has on it's panel 2 vertical bars to show audio gain, The bars are flat line during recording. I also have an audio only capture prog called "Moo0 Voice Recorder" that will capture the YouTube audio just fine (Moo0 has a horz type audio display on the panel). The other 2 won't record a peep. I also tried a cold reboot (pulling the ac cord from the laptop and removed the battery). Still no change. I have never had this problem before with YouTube downloader or Replay Video Capture. I have been using both prog's for a long time without any problems. I can't figure out why those 2 capture prog's won't record a peep. I also tried del and reinstalling both prog's. That didn't help eather.

Ok, first of all, i'm not sure how to properly explain this, because it's confusing, but i'll try my best and if any more information is needed please let me know!

So, I bought this packard bell laptop preinstalled with windows 7 from pc world in September. And for as long as I can remember, i'm having issues with sound. Not huge issues, small issues that are really annoying.

What basically happens is, when i play music or any other sound, it plays fine, clearly, through my speakers and headphones (tested both), but every 30 seconds or so, it makes a buzzing noise that lasts around 2-3 seconds (sometimes longer, will be explained), and during those 2-3 seconds, my computer basically freezes. I can't move my mouse until the buzzing stops. This only happens when sound is played. I've had it tested and the sound card proved to be fine, so i'm not sure what the issue could be.

Occasionally, the buzzing would last forever, until I have to hold the power button down on my laptop, because I can't move the mouse/do anything, this happens rarely though, its more of a 2-3 second thing.

Some information about my speakers/drivers:

It's a packard bell easynote tx86, installed with:

Conexant High Definition Audio, and Intel (R) Display Drivers (According to device manager)
It has Dolby Home Theater featured on the speakers

This is a werid issue. I am running windows 7 home 64 bit. I have a creative xfi titanium fatality pro sound card. I've tried messing with the settings to the sound card but I cannot figure out why it keep broadcasting loud sounds. On multiple occasions, when I use the Stick 300 for skyping, the sound card will have issues. It would work for 5-10 minutes, then the sound card would "go offline".  Windows will prompt not sound card detected.Only way to fix this is the reboot. I had thought it might be issues of having too much process on the little stick, so I've offloaded the network connection to use a usb ethernet network adapter.  However the sound card still gets dropped. I suspect it's some sort of overloading of the stick causing the sound card to go down. Anyone have any suggestions to how to fix this?  I could use a usb sound card too...but I'd prefer to have the audio through the hdmi, since it's plugged to a TV.

I recently bought a digital storm pc which uses windows 10. Whenever I play a game, use teamspeak, skype, etc. I can hear everything just fine. But no one can hear me. When I used skype to test call a notification came up saying " cant detect a sound card". I looked under device manager and found what I think is my sound card: NVIDIA high definition audio and Realtek high definition audio. Also whenever I look under recording devices it says " mic not plugged in" but I have plugged it in. What should I do to fix this?

Sometimes I use skype to talk to my friends. This morning when I was talking, the sound was lost suddenly. And an error message told me the sound card was not available. But everthing else seems normal.  I went to the Device Manager. It seems normal there as well. Then I opened the Windows Media Player and tried to play a music. This error dialog was shown up: ? It happened before, several times. If I reboot the system, everything will back to normal. Is there a way I can fix it?

Hey guys I recently installed XP, as I just fitted a new HD.

The new HD went in fine and works well, however my sound is not working now.

I have no idea what sound card I'm using, although as my pc was shop bought I suspect it's a standard basic one.

I know I need a driver, but I have no idea which card I have or which driver to get.

Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed,

Thank you

Hi all

I recently bought myself a new motherboard so i could use more & faster RAM (MSI Intel Dual Core EXTREME BUNDLE)
Problem is it came with a onboard 7.1 sound card which at first i though was handy, but now i've realise that windows isn't recognising the sound card, its not even appearing in Device Manager and i cant find any audio settings anywhere in the BIOS so i'm a bit stuck.

Was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions, Cheers

P.S heres a Link to my exact Motherboard Specs http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=a97ht&source=15&SD=Y

Okay. My brother got me a nice to PC in place of the last PC I had.
My new PC was bought off of Amazon in separate parts, and built together. So I don't know if the sound card on my mother board was put in right, or if I am dealing with a driver issue.

Windows Vista Home Basic

Ran ipconfig /release and I get this.
"The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for operation"

So I ran devmgmt.msc and got three errors on my networking card

Microsoft 6to4 adapter #7
Microsoft 6to4 adapter #8

All three giving me the error of "This device is not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Cone 31)"

I attempted to update the drivers but it only tells me that Windows thinks that the drivers that are running it are correct. It was working not to long ago, not I can only access my lan, or so my connection box says haven't tried anything on the LAN yet.

Any hints?

Syrian Cow Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about your graphics problem and wanted to help -- but need more information.I see you're running Win10. Did the PC come preinstalled with Win10? Or, did you upgrade it from a prior OS to Win10?If you did the upgrade, how long ago was that, and what was the prior OS? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Everything worked fine until the graphics driver was updated. After the update, the GPU's driver was automatically updated by Windows.  I tried installing driver softwares for the GPU but the situation was the same everytime. Now I uninstalled the device to use inbuilt graphics for gaming.  What should I do to recover my GPU?

So for the last little while, whenever I play WoW I am getting random shutdowns - sometimes with a BSOD stating "system service exception", sometimes not. I monitored the temperature and it isn't changing between when I'm playing and when I'm not. I've tried shutting down *everything* else when I play, that doesn't change anything. I tried cleaning off a lot of old programs and updating the video card driver and it got *worse*, to the point where I've had to use the repair feature twice tonight, the first time it did a system restore (but didn't tell me to *when*), the second time it didn't - this is getting frustrating! One note, I went to AMD's website for my card (http://www.amd.com/us/products/desk...d-4800/Pages/ati-radeon-hd-4800-overview.aspx) and clicked on "Support and Drivers". Under product type I chose "graphics card - desktop" - but I can't find the 4800 series in the list. At that point I looked at the next link in my google search for a driver (http://driverscollection.com/?H=Radeon HD 4800&By=ATI), checked to see what other people said of the website and couldn't find anything negative, so tried that. That's when things got worse. Everything else works fine, and I haven't had an issue with any other games I've played. Here's the system info:

A:Video card driver issue... I *think*?

The drivers/support for the AMD Radeon HD 4800 is under the "Radeon HD" section. Try uninstalling the drivers from Programs and features in the Control Panel and install the latest drivers from the AMD website.

Please post what power supply you have in your computer, Acer's generally one with low wattage/quality power supplies. The power supply model/wattage will be listed on a sticker on the side of the power supply once you get the side of the PC off.

Also post the model of the complete system, such as Acer Aspire T710-3412.

Post the temps and voltages at idle and at load(such as when playigng WoW, post a screenshot from HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Also ensure WoW is fully up-to-date.

The problem may also be due to you running a game off an external drive. USB is not perfectly stable and massively slower then an internal SATA drive. You ideally should reinstall the game to the internal hard drive.

I have sony laptop model: PVCF132Fx, win 7 Home prem x64
There seems to be driver issue on video card. As soon as you fresh install, it works great for few hours, may be few days. After that, it crashed with blue screen.

If I go into safe mode and uninstall the display driver, sometimes it works other times, it doesn't

Any idea? is my laptop running too hot? how do I check the temp?

A:Graphic Card Driver issue

Give speccy a look to check your temps

Also check your laptop manufacturer site for their video driver
