System locks up when I use F10 to go to BIOS

Q: System locks up when I use F10 to go to BIOS

I turn the computer on and start pressing F10 every second. The screen remains blank. After 4 minutes or so, I stop pressing F10. The screen remains blank, nothing happens and I turn the computer off after a half hour. I purchased this computer with Windows Vista installed and a free upgrade to Windows 7 that I installed immediately in 2009. I am certain that after the upgrade I was able to invoke the BIOS program, but it has been several years since I used the BIOS. The BIOS Version/Date on my computer is Phoenix Technologies, LTD 5.43, 6/3/2009. I downloaded an update from HP, sp43096.exe, version 5.49 for WIndows Vista so it would not update the BIOS on my Windows 7 system. Perhaps if I could update the BIOS it would resolve my problem. Is there a BIOS update for WIndows 7 and motherboard, M2N68-LA? Many thanks for help.Loren Hall

Preferred Solution: System locks up when I use F10 to go to BIOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

@lorenhall, welcome to the forum. You should try tapping the Esc key while the computer is booting to see if it helps. There is no BIOS update for Win 7 available. Here is another thread that may help you install the Vista BIOS in Win 7. Read it carefully to see if there is a solution that you are comfortable trying.

A few days ago, my computer stopped booting up. It would get to the Asus bios screen, where it would sway press del to enter setup, and then it would freeze. I tried booting it for a while, then I gave up and decided to come back to it the next day, and it worked fine. It continued to boot fine for a few days, until yesterday, when thew same problem started again. This time letting it sit didn't seem to work, not sure what to try next. Is a new motherboard in my future? Or could it be something else?

Hello,
I've downloaded BIOS version P01.B1 for my gateway dx4831-07 from the official site and installed following the instructions.
Installation was successful but now windows locks up at the "starting windows" screen. I can only access on safe mode. I've tried putting the Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Installation disk. Once booted from the DVD it started loading the windows files, and then it locks up again at the windows logo screen.

I did the SF_Diagnostic_Tool I uploaded the rar archive like in the instructions: http://www.sevenforums.com/joinseven...p?do=addmember

A:Bios Update Windows locks up

Hi JohnyDale, Welcome to Sevenforums.

1. Well since you're getting to the Windows boot menu, your BIOS is recognizing and reading the drive. I think its possible that the BIOS change could require new Windows driver(s) to use, but safe mode should overlook that. Have you tried booting off any other devices and see if you can still access/read the drive?

2. It can be a issue with the BIOS update. The workaround is to change the Boot speed setting in Bios to "normal" instead of the default "fast"
So..
Press and hold the F2 button, then power on the Unit. That should bring up the BIOS, from there you should see a setting under the Advanced tab called boot speed, just set it to normal and you should be able to load windows normaly

3. Try to boot from DVD and do system repair.

If all fails. Do a Clean Install Windows 7, install all the drivers again. That will fix the issue.

Return it while you can thats what the warranty is for. Or at least give Dell a call and see what they can recommend.

I've also removed your email address, posting it in an open forum is just asking for Spam.

After changing the boot sequence in the bios and exiting and saving the changes, a black screen appeared reading "Default BIOS settings have been loaded." the computer freezes each time at this point. Since then I have tried to fix the problem by resetting the bios by removing the CMOS battery and using the jumper rest on the board. This has not fixed my problem. How may I fix this problem?

I used to be able to get to the BIOS setup utility, and at that time the keyboard worked fine.

Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Release 6.0 copyright 1995-1998 Phoenix Tech. Pentium II - I'M.

When I press F1 for setup, the BIOS setup utility comes up. My problem is when it comes up it locks out the keyboard. I then have no choise but to reboot to use the computer.

The computer works fine in every other aspect. I am running WIN98.

Can you help me solve the keyboard lockout problem?
Thanks,

This is my dad's machine, and it locks at the Dell logo before the progress bar even starts. I don't even have the chance to get into the BIOS or boot options, nor into diagnostics by holding down Fn while starting. I've even tried with a USB keyboard.
It starts super fast, so I discharged the stored power with a paper clip in the hole on the bottom, but that did nothing. I tore the whole thing apart, reseated the RAM and tried each stick by itself, reseated the battery, unplugged the CMOS battery for a few minutes, and I'm out of options here.
The funny thing is, he had this for 4 years before this problem occurred.
Is there anything left? If there was even a way to sideload a BIOS on this board, it would need to be one with Secure Boot off., and I can't imagine where I'd find that.

A:14z 5423 locks at Dell Logo - cannot get into BIOS

"reseated the battery, unplugged the CMOS battery for a few minutes "

Just making sure, you're doing it correctly.....
1. Remove or disconnect the coin cell battery ( You can buy a new battery at your local Walmart or dollar store for about $2.00 - $5.00)
2. Press the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain all residual power from the system
3. Assemble the unit, hopefully your computer starts normally

Instead of holding down the Fn key, you tried tapping the F2 key(BIOS) or the F12 key(Diagnostic) at boot up? If no, then I like to suggest you follow the steps below:
1. Power off the computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously. Hopefully, you'll be able to see the BIOS screen.

Note: If your system is windows 7, you can also try tapping the F8 key - Advance Boot Options)

hi,
Got a sony vaio pcg-801a laptop to work on (its not my birthday, trust me!)
its being its usual pain in the neck. On my last 'fix' i managed to break the hard drive connector to the motherboard .

Now after putting in a new connector, the computer performs the animated sony vaio logo, and while doing so, the POST tests, recognizing the hard drive, CD-ROM, etc then the logo goes, and while it should be identifying valid boot drives, it just hangs, blank screen, not even a cursor.

I have tried booting off all types of media, (HD, CD, USB-HD, USB-memstick) to no avail. the hard drive is blank, and just after the cable broke, it would say 'no available boot device' or words to that effect. now with the new cable and without, it still won't boot.

I found a similar article at: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/35003/

Any ideas?

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). Plugging in the battery makes it work again. For the sake of prolonging my battery life I ususally run without it when safely docked at home.Anyone else experiencing this? I assume it's a bug?

A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

Here are a couple of screen shots of my event log, mostly of the APP and System Errors, also my System is

A:System locks up

Hi deltafee,

Double click on the errors in Applications and Services to get more detail on the errors.

Try booting in the Safe mode and see if the problem persists. If not, try stopping some of the items in the msconfig tool. You can usually leave the Windows applications and be sure to leave one Spyware and Virus programs running if you get on the net.

It might be that the system is overheating, especially the CPU. Download and run SpeedFan. You can get it here:

OK I will try to explain. I use windows 98, have an aptiva ibm system I am not sure what other information you need on my system. I will power it up and while starting up It will lock up and everything will stop. If I leave it on it will lock-up and won't let me do anything. So I have to power it down manually. Then a lot of times it will only let me restart in "safe mode" I think my hard drive might be the problem, but I am not sure on changing it myself, but I can't afford to take it out at the moment. I do have an Aptiva recovery disk, but I don't know if it has windows on it or not. My system came preloaded with it.

Any help would be great, this is getting puzzleing.

I have a system running Vista Ultimate 64-bit that locks up running Windows Media Center, Roxio Creator DE & Lightroom. With Windows Media Center the mouse cursor disappears, Roxio when burning disk to disk at 90-95% it fails (mouse disappears) and Lightroom the mouse disappears as well. I have made sure that the pointer trails and enabled shadow for the mouse settings. I also have the mouse cursor set to windows default pointer. The keyboard and mouse are a wireless USB set made by Logitech.

The OS is fully patch and running SP1 on a Dell dual quad-core with 12 Gig of RAM. The only other point that I can think to mention is that that user I'm supporting on this system has repeatedly performed a hard shut-down once the system locks up on them.

Any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Well heres the routine, I turn on my pc, the GRUB Boot Loader loads, I choose Windows XP, it loads, it logs me in, then it starts to load my startups. A small while after that, the system locks up. I've had a dual-boot for some time now and I'm not sure what the problem is, and I'm pretty sure its not Linux, but I'm just mentioning its a dual-boot.

It started when my cousin thought it would be funny to make a cutom error message and set it to run at startup, since then, I've removed the file, but I cant get to the startup folder because it locks up before I can get to it

PS: I can't get into safe mode for some reason.

I have more info but I'm short on time so, I'll just add my specs.

I have a Dell Dim 5150 and I've noticed that on my computer tower it has the Home Edition sticker, but when i run winver it says I have professional.. so which version do i have .. don't really think it matters much anyway does it?

Also main problem, my computer locks up completely extremely often so I have to constantly restart it by pushing the button on my computer for about 10 secs. I've had it reformatted 3 times over the past year with no luck and the computer is only 2 or 3 years old. This is what happens every time it crashes:

- i hear a click sound inside the computer, like its just turned itself off or like something inside has stopped working..
- computer screen freezes on the last screen im on
- mouse cursor freezes in its last position
- keyboard doesn't work so cant do alt-ctrl-del or anything at all BUT i've noticed that the numlock light stays on (i always have it on - personal preference), and if caps lock is on, that light stays on too. but i can't turn off caps lock or numlock, so its like the keyboard has stopped working.. but not.. confusing..
- if im listening to music, the music stops playing i.e. speakers stop working but the light for those stays on BUT i am able to turn the speakers off when it crashes

Once when it crashed, I left the computer on for a whole day while i was out, came back, still frozen, still cant do anything but push the button to restart.

I have scanned for viruses/malware etc.. I have windows live oneca... Read more

This worked for a few hours then it started doing the same again. There are no errors shown whatsoever in the System or application event log to give any clue why this should be happening. From what I have seen in other threads - this is not a rare event with service pack 1.? Will this only be resolved by a full system reformat or is there some other less intrusive means of rectifying this?

I have an HP Pavilion 735n - came with Hp dvd writer/cd writer combo and a cd-rom drive-no hardware updates. Came with its own writing software. I installed NERO 6.
Problem: after playing a CD, writing a CD/DVD or any one use of either drive, the next disk usage locks the windows environment. Generally Hard booting the system (after removing the disk) allows for another disk to be read - on occassion a couple reboots is required. If still in Nero, I can continue to burn several disks in a row as long as I do not mark the "confirm" setting.

Other related issue: in last few weeks the CD-rom won't open.

I have a computer (XP Pro, 256 MB Ram, 900mhz cpu, 30 gb hdd w/plenty of room left on it) that locks up on the screen for about 5-10 seconds once every 1-2 minutes.

I have cleared out the cache files, temp files and cookies with no positive results. I also turned off all excess background programs through MSCONFIG with no change there either.

The Task manager does not show anything using excessive processing time.

I removed the ir mouse and swapped the ram to the other slot which with each one seemed to fix the problem for about 10 minutes then the issue would come back again.

I am to the point of pounding my head on the wall (or any other convenient hard surface) now.

I am wondering if it might not be a motherboard issue or if I am over looking something obvious.

Has anyone else run across this sort of issue in the past and if so what did you do to fix the problem?

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanx

However, every single time I try "applying" the graphic settings OR I try exiting from a game the system locks up. Not to the point where I have to reboot. A simple ctrl-alt-delete takes care of it but it?s a major pain, especially since I can?t max out this new video card on my game settings?.and I've upgrade to the latest version of Direct 9.0x. Has anybody had this issue before? Could it be the video card??? If anyone has any idea what the challenge could be, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Max T.

Are you using the latest drivers or reinstalling your drivers. Ive had that problem before and it was always driver related.

Sorry about the preamble, I get to my question about five lines down.
I am running windows 7 64bit with Kaspersky Internet Security 2013.
Recently my computer started to play boring "supermarket type" music when I opened ether IE9 or Firefox.
I think it was after I watched a YouTube video. Kaspersky, including a rootkit scan found nothing, neither did a Malwarebytes full scan.
As I have Macrium Reflect updating every day I finally restored using the latter, and the problem seems to have gone.
I downloaded HitmanPro to make an additional check for viruses. When I run Hitman, in normal mode the computer completely locks at 7%, and in safe mode I get to 56% (system32/*), and it locks completely.
The computer is performing completely normally apart from it won't run Hitman, and maybe I am worrying too much. Anybody have any ideas? Thank you all in advance.

OK, I am past the point of frustration. I have a Compaq system running Win XP Pro, IGHz, 128 MB SDRAM, Radeon 7000, 40GB Western Digital. The system kept locking up so I replaced the power supply (300W), the memory stick, hard drive, video card (with the above listed peripherals), got a new fan and heat sink for CPU, purchased and installed a new copy of XP Pro, updated all drivers and the stinkin' thing still locks up after a few minutes. What can I try next? Thank you!

Crimeny, I think I'm cursed. I'm getting ready to sell my current system next wk (so I can build a new one), and now I just started have this problem.

The system beeps, it locks up for a moment, resumes normally, beeps again, locks up for maybe 20 seconds, resumes normally. It does this maybe a couple of times and then everything is fine.

It happened once last wk, once this morning, and then it just happened again, except this last time there was no recovery, the mouse cursor disappeared and the system stayed locked-up, so I had to press the restart button.

I have 256mg memory so I thought it might be running low on memory. I did have 512 but had a module go bad a couple months ago. But I've been running on only 256 since then and this problem just started happening a few days ago so that doesn't seem like it would be the problem.

Any thoughts much appreciated. I can't sell the guy my system if something is wack!

Wasn't sure if this belonged in software or hardware, but I put it here cause of the BEEP!

Thanks much,
Harold

I am having a serious problem with Explorer and Firefox. When browsing in either, the brower completely locks up and I am unable to continue. I have to kill the power on the system in order for it to reboot, Control, alt delete does not work, the curser freezes and I cannot continue.
I have run pc doctor and adaware 6 to clean up files. I first noticed it when I was on an auction site.

Hi,
I've got an irritating problem. Whenever I restart my machine I get a message that Dr Watson has encountered a problem and needs to close. My system then locks up and I have to restart again. Sometimes I can get back in after two or three restarts. Sometimes I have to do a System Restore from Safe Mode via Task Manager. Even then it can take a couple of goes before I get in. If I leave my machine on all the time it runs fine and I can run all my programs. I spent a lot of time clearing my machine of Adware etc and my last HJT log was fine. I've run sfc /scannow in case system files were corrupt and my Windows updates are "up-to-date". I've checked the Event Viewer and often the only error shown is for DrWtsn32.exe. On other occasions the Dr Watson error is preceded by a Fault Bucket error (whatever that is). What else can I do?
Many thanks,
Pilot.

Just gotta AMD 64 3400+ running on Win XP Media Center OS pre installed.

Hooked it up, everything is great, except when I want to reboot. It goes like this..

1. install something thats requires reboot (update.. driver..etc)
2. clicky yes..reboot my system now
3. Windows is saving your settings n stuff
4. Windows is shutting down
5. Freezes after that showing desktop pic and cursor that wont move.

I have to unplug to get it to shut down at that point, so I can turn it on again.
This is an emachine and doesnt have what I call the "soft boot" button..only on/off.

It's done this from the very first Windows setup reboot, so its not something Ive installed after. Living with it atm, but it's way annoying.

I recently restored my system to restore point set prior to a failed upgrade to W10 . The restore was "successful" but then... When I boot up, I get normal login but when I enter my password, system tells me it is setting up my desktop??  Then it stalls in never never land. When I  boot in safe mode I get my normal desktop but not much works including networking. Most anything I try yields an explorer  error message that the file or resource cannot be found, etc.  Curiously I can open any PDF file with Acrobat and I can even browse and load  other PDF files on the hard disk from within acrobat. I ran boot log and in fact most of the the drivers other than sysroot... did not load. I tried all of the repair options provided by HP and microsoft without success.

Problem:

System hangs for 5-10 seconds (mouse locks also), then its fine for 2-5 seconds, then hangs again. This repeats approx. 2-5 times. Once the hangs have stopped, I have no internet connection at all, until I reset my computer.

This happens at random times (anything between 5 minutes, up to 5 hours after reboot), whilst using random internet programs. But it does seam to happen more when Iím using internet hungry applications, such as downloading from the internet, whilst chatting on say msn. But has never happen yet whilst on-line gaming? (which I would imagine is very internet hungry).

System Stats:

Windows XP Pro,
RAM 512 DDR,
2.8Gb Pent,
2Mb Telewest Cable Internet Connection.
SP1, and up-to-date on all windows updates.

What I found out so far:

Using TaskInfo2003:

I found out that it is the DPC TIME that spikes CPU usage to 100%, TaskInfo indicates that itís the HARDWARE INTERRUPTS AND DEFFERED PROCDURES that actual spike at the same time as DPC TIME.

Using Memokit:

RAM spikes sharply at the same time, for a second or two, it spikes to almost 100%.

Any help would be very appreciated, if anyone knows how to restart my internet without resetting; that would be a great start.

I have an athlon1700, a prophet III ti 500 graphics card, 256mb of ram and win98 se. I am sure that all of my drivers are up to date. The games (AOM, Ceasar 3, Return to castle wolfenstein and Mafia all worked fine previously. I have already removed the hardware piece by piece but none of these changes have alleviated the problem. The only thing that I can possibly think of is that I upgraded the VIA chipset driver. Could that be the problem or is there something else that it could be? Multiple times in the past two weeks my PC has hit 100% usage and locked. There does not seem to be a pattern. It occurs when running simple applications such as MS Windows and Quicken 2006 Delux. When it happens, a hard reboot is needed.

I have current Norton Internet Security software and data files. I have scanned by PC with Norton Virus Scan, Registry Mechanic, Spybot, and Software Doctor looking for virus or malware infections. Nothing was found. In reviewing the reports I noticed files I did not recognize. Two examples are xudexoli and d?xplore.exe.

I am concerned the protection I have is not sufficient. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 8.1

Purchased in Oct 2014

Doesn't seem to want to come up unless the internet is connected - which it is not a great deal of the time. Mostly early am or late evening.

Might be trying to update. I thought I set it to notify me but can't figure out how to apply the updates.

Most of the time I am watching it make circles. If this process lasts too long, I lose the computer completely,

This has been a problem since I purchased the computer however, I purchased a new printer and couldn't get it to scan (still haven't figured it out).

I allowed the HP tech access to the computer. Things got worse. They didn't help with the printer but looked all over the computer and told me what a mess it was and they could fix everything for $250.00. I declined and ended the connection. I think things have been worse since then.

When my other computer died, I had to use my old XP - this one is getting to the point it is not much of an improvement.

Please help!!

My system periodically locks up. I can still see the desktop, but the mouse is frozen and the time and date are also frozen. I've tried swapping out the power supply, getting rid of extra hard drives, checking memory, reducing the size of memory, deactivating software that might be causing problems and were installed around the time the freezes started, but nothing works. Is there a way I can set up some sort of system log so I can look at what the system was doing when it locks up, to troubleshoot the problem? I know I should have done this first thing, but I thought I knew what was going on and eliminating the cause seemed like the way to go. But I don't know the cause, and need some help finding it.

A:System locks up. Can I track with logging?

I installed the debugging tools, but have no idea how to initiate the logging process so that there's a *.dmp file to analyze in the event of a lock up. I assumed installing the debugging tools would do that, but it hasn't.
