Cant open files from old win7 user.

Q: Cant open files from old win7 user.

I had to format hdd and install new Win7 os, so i copy old files, Documents folder, to other hdd and when i installed new win7 i just copy old documents back but on other partition.
1HDD - C:\win7
and now when i try to open any file , jpg, doc, txt, pdf..... it wants from me :

right click on file, Properties, Security, Continue and change Current owner: Unable to display current owner to New user name and check box under, replace owner on subcontainers and objects. after i can open image or text but its work only for one file per action. I have about 60gb of data, can i remove owner from all at once ?

and when i 2x click on any via or admin to make them owner and close it, after i have this

so need to remove old user and add one. only after i can open jpg

Preferred Solution: Cant open files from old win7 user.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Cant open files from old win7 user.

The old files have the owner set to the old user which has a different ID than your new user account (In the future you can avoid this if possible by transferring the old user account to the new machine. This can be done for the same machine between an update too).

But for now, follow this tutorial to make a "Take Ownership" context menu that you can use to quickly re-take ownership of those file from your old account. This should work for entire directories I believe (Though been a while since I used it)

Take Ownership Shortcut

Oh I should say "be careful" you do NOT want to use this on your windows folder or the entire C drive. Use it /only/ on your own files on other disks or that you have moved to your new users folder

I would like to eliminate user accounts and have win7 automatically open when machine boots up. I only have 1 user account-me- so how can I get rid of it?

A:How to have Win7 auto open user account

Try this:

Goto your orb, type: netplwiz and press enter. Then in the window that pops up, uncheck Users should enter a username and password to use this computer, and then press OK. It should then prompt you for the user/password to auto login. That should work for ya.

hi there,I have a strange one that I haven't come across yet. A computer with Windows 7 Home Premium x64 started having a problem yesterday with exe files (I think). Most (but not all) exe files won't open. Example - when I try to open Firefox, either from the desktop shortcut, or from the exe located in Program Files (x86) \ Mozilla folder, the following message appears: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."also, the icons for the files I can't open have been set to generic icons. I've checked/changed permissions and taken ownership, in case that helped, but it didn't change anything, the weirdest things are:1. Some exe files and programs will open - for example, mahjongg won't open, but spider solitaire will. in the case where the program will open, the icon is in tact. 2. everything works perfectly fine in Safe Mode with networking - i can open firefox, surf the web, download files, everything I should be able to do.What I've done so far ---> downloaded, updated and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, found a few infections (although I think nothing major)--> disabled all startup items and (non-microsoft) services--> i tried to run hijack this, but when i tried to install it to "C:", it gave me the error that it must be installed on a local volume--> i did head into the registry and check the exefile and it was set properl... My son bought a new computer and is giving me his 2 year old Win7 HP desktop to replace my still truckin 8 year old XP. His computer has Nortons and no virus issues - runs fine, a little slow maybe. He already copied off his stuff but I would to start using it with ALL his user files and torrent downloads gone, clean registry etc. I know can start by deleting his user file, uninstalling some programs, doing a disk clean etc. But is there a one stop idea to make it look like day one or do I need to do multiple functions? If multiple, what would be on the list? I would prefer NOT to do a clean install as I really don't want to reinstall all the programs, win7 updates, drivers, the printer etc. Thanks!

A:Best option to clean Win7, remove user files but keep programs

You can try the steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware but if it's never had a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then the HP factory preinstall is the worst install of Win7 one can have.

If it's dysfunctional I'd run a Repair Install after doing the clean up tutorial steps to turn off all the unneeded crapware, check if its' damaged system files, clean and defrag.

Again it asked what file do I want to open this file with. This has been happening for a few days now. This computer has been working fine, since I bought it on October 22, 2009. Have I lost a library or dll? Does anybody have an idea what may be causing this situation?

I am using a Windows XP as the main server computer. It is hardwired to the Internet and we have a wireless network setup for our laptops.

My employer wants the WinXP desktop to store shared files and for the laptops to be able to connect to the desktop

I set up the network on the WinXP computer with the Network Wizard in the control panel.

My laptop is a Win7 and my employer's laptop is Win8.

I can see the shared files from my laptop but when I click to open I get the following error pop up:

\\DELLDESKTOP\Documents and Settings is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

I would sure appreciate any thoughts and help with this.

Thank you

A:Error trying to open shared files on WinXP from Win7

There are quite a few hits for this not enough storage space to process this command ' issue but it's not a common problem with no obvious reason or solution though it may just be a standard message for a permission or access problem.

You may have better luck if you set up a standard or Admin account on the Windows 7 machine with the same User name and password as you are using on the XP machine.

It might also help to change from the 128 bit encryption over to the 40 or 56 bit encryption on the Windows 7 machine at the Network and Sharing Center Advanced settings page.

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

Hello,my apologies if this was already discussed but I searched the forum and couldn't find anything.

As the title states,on my laptop, vista erased files in my user profile while the 2 other user profiles (my gf's and the guest profiles) were basically left untouched.
I use an HP dv6500 series with Vista Ultimate, 2gb ram,160gb hd and 2.0 ghz if that helps.

For starters, let me tell you what happened. As of late I have been using the Power saver option( so that the screen brightness is dulled so that I can use it in the dark when everyone's asleep) as well as the High performance option when my gf uses it (shes addicted to the sims3 and has pulled me in too ). Normally I have it on the HP recommended option.

A few nights ago I was using my laptop and instead of shutting down I hibernated as I usually do because my gf is usually still logged in. The next morning my gf started up the laptop, and the password screen for my profile came up and she switched users and logged into hers. Then later she hibernated as well, and we left to run some errands with a friend.

When we got back my friend wanted to use the laptop to play online chess(yahoo games to be exact) so I just put in my password to log into my profile so he could play without any issues if he needed to (since my profile is the administrator he wouldnt need me to put in passwords if he had to download or upgrade any software). When I came to check up on him I saw that my wallpaper, the folders on the desktop as we... Read more

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

Hi there.

I'm having difficulty understanding File and folder sharing with Windows 7.

I have several PCs all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a home network in the same workgroup called "Workgroup".

What I want to do is share 1 folder for me called "Chris" (that no one else can access but me) on a PC named "Bear-den" I use as a media server. I have a Homegroup set up on this PC and working fine so everyone in my house can access my media on it and that is great. I do not want my Homegroup users to see or access the "Chris" folder. If they can see it I guess I can live with that but I definately don't want them to be able to access it.

Now the "Chris" folder I want shared for me only is shared by right clicking it and selected specific user (me). I can access it only if I am logged in to that PC. I cannot access the folder from any other PC that I am logged into. I am using the same username and password on all my PCs and although I can see the folder i cannot access it. I get the message "Windows cannot access \\Bear-den\chris You do not have permission to access \\bear-den\Chris. Contact your network administrator to request access." It never asks me for credentials when I double click the folder.

I know I have to have a user account on each Win7 PC but I can't figure out why this is not working.

Network Discovery is turned on
File and Print Sharing is Turned on

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Folder Sharing Win7 to Win7 for 1 user only

I would logon to PC Bear-Den, go to your Chris folder.

Right click "chris" folder. Click properties. Open Security tab. Just below the box "group or user names" click Edit. Click Add

Click locations button. Now it should show you a list of other PC's in your network. I think they would need to be on. Pick your other PC (not Bear-Den), click OK. Now the line "From this location" should have your second PC name, instead of Bear-Den.

In the bottom white box you should be able to add "chris" then click OK. This should now add ...........

Chris (Other-PC\Chris) or similar

to your "Group or User Names" box on the previous window.
Click "Chris(Other-PC\Chris), so it is highlighted in blue then go down to the bottom box and set your permissions. I would assume you want to fully manage that folder so click "full control", then click Apply.

You would have to do this from each PC you add to your network if you want it to be able to access your folder.

Sorry it's written, and not numerically ordered, like 1)click this 2) click that.....

I have actually disabled my Homegroup and run strictly with workgroup, being an ex-XP/Vista guy.

Hi all, I'm new here and sure could use some help. Somehow I was infected with a nasty virus, but I think I managed to clean it up, or at least I think so. However, now I cannot do many things on my computer. I can't upload files to email, I can't change the wallpaper or screensaver on my computer, I can't open any .exe files, and most programs will not open.

I've tried many internet searches for these problems and tried to run various scans and registry fixes, but nothing seems to work. I'd really rather not use the repair install cd but I'm afraid I might have to.

So, it seems to me that files are corrupted and something is blocking me from using my computer. It is very frustrating and I could sure use your advice. Thank you.

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Thank you for any help

Hi there, hoping someone can help...

I've eventually managed to get a dual boot system going. I've installed Win7 on one hard drive and Win XP Pro on another.
I've still got to figure out how to get a dual boot menu going, but in the meantime I press the F10 key during Boot-up of the machine and I suppose its my Bios that allows me to decide which hard drive to boot from. Both boot-ups in either XP or Win7work fine.

However, when I boot in Win7 I can't seem to save files that I have edited i.e. I can open up the file and make chnages, but as soon as I try to save and replace, I get an access denied message, although I've got admin rights. However on some drives I can edit without a problem. Even on the same drive, for example the c: drive, I can edit and save files in the My docyments folder, but can for example not edit and save files in the Program Files (x86) folder on the same drive ....

If I boot in XP, this problem does not occur and all files are accessbile and can be edited and saved ...

Any ideas? Any help would be extremely appreciated ...

There is no problem accessing the shared folders from the Media PC, I can properly browse through the folder structer and i'm able to see the files. There could be a few problmes. Your host computer could not be fast enough (not a good enough processor/not enough ram)
The recieveing computer may not be fast enough either.
Also, there could be a problem becuase the router can't handle it.

I'm running Win 7. About the virus - at first each time I started the computer I saw an Internet Security fake scan, and it disabled all .exe. Now I see a US Courts MoneyPak screen. Safe Mode won't start. System restore doesn't work either because the restore points are too recent. I googled how to remove the virus, but most require dowloading and installing programs - which I don't want to do. I would prefer to manually delete the virus files. I found a couple videos that edit the registry, but I can't find the infected files in my reg. Which got me to thinking... Using the command prompt I created a new user which creates a new, clean reg. No problems with the computer logged in as the new user. All the programs work ok, and I've copied all the files from the infected user to the new user. If I now delete the infected user, does that also delete the registry for that user and the virus along with it (assuming the virus is in the registry)?

I bought a display model laptop running Vista that had a user called OfficeDepot defined. After a few weeks I decided to create a new user called Mark (with administrator privileges) and delete the OfficeDepot user.

In the user directory I noticed that there was only a OfficeDepot folder and there was not yet a Mark folder so I created one there and copied all the files from OfficeDepot to Mark. Then when I tried to delete the OfficeDepot folder, it started to delete all of the files I had just moved to the new Mark directory so I cancelled this action.

What am I doing wrong here? Do I have to change the file ownerships from OfficeDepot to Mark manually before I try to delete the OfficeDepot folder?

According to the windows.microsoft.com website "Your user account prevents anyone who is using a standard account on your computer from seeing your files." My wife and I share our computer: I have an administrator account and she has a standard user account. Yet when she is logged in she can access my documents and read them via File Explorer, though she cannot delete them. This seems to contradict what Microsoft say or am I missing something? Grateful for any advice.

Since writing the above I have found that the same situation exists on the other computer that we share, but in this case she is able to delete the documents as well.

Sorry, everyone, I think I've solved this. I must have set particular sharing permissions and forgotten I'd done so.

From my husband's Admin account, I deleted my own User Account, but the account is still there (with a lock icon on it) and I am unable to delete it (gives me the message that the folder is open or in use by another program). I changed the owner to my husband (checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects") as suggested on this thread and I still can't delete it.

- My user profile was corrupted, got the message that a temporary user profile was created.
- Rather than going the route of going into the registry as suggested here, I deleted the account but kept the files (was this my mistake)?
- When I went to create a new account, it appended HOME.DESKTOP to the end of my name. And my old account with files was still there.
- So I deleted the new account.
- And I'm at the step where I am trying to delete the old account (I have a backup of the data elsewhere) entirely from the hard drive. But Windows won't let me.
- Upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit yesterday.

Any suggestions?

If you have it open in explorer it is open and may not be able to be deleted.

If it is in the left panel and not open try right clicking and delete.

If that doesnt work there are applications (3rd party) that will delete almost anything. The trials for these apps are usually free.

Hi guys,

This is my first post..Last year, when I was building my pc, my friends suggested to try Win 7 RC for a OS and I did so..Now, as you know the time for Win7 RC is nearing a close..I am planning on buyin Win 7 pro..
My problem is I am really not sure what drives and folders to backup before doing a Win7 pro clean install..I have 2 drives - C: and D: i have a lot of games installed..all of them in D drive..
Os is in C: So I am backing up only the files in the Users folders and the Libraries (the default Windows backup option)..And when I install Win7 pro, I am gonna format only C: and install it there..
So, If i dont backup C and D, would I lose all the games which I installed..will it run after i install the new OS..Of course the save files are backed up as part of the libraries..
What exactly does the default windows 7 backup do..does it backup registry information of the installed programs too..I use this system only for gaming, so am worried a bit..
Please help me guys..i have never done this before..Thanx in advance..

A:Need to backup files from Win7 RC to Win7 Pro

In most cases, programs must be installed, you can't copy programs from one OS to another. Basically, user data (e.g. pictures, word processing files, music, etc), your e-mail address book, I.E. favorites, etc is mostly what you can copy over.

It looks like probably all your games will have to be reinstalled.

Together we set the item up for her but I had the impression that said lady was completely underwhelmed by this item, she having basic understanding of - and little need for - such an item. Her true wish was for an external hard drive which I later purchased for her, retrieving the laptop as it would never have been used !

Now, my prob is that the I wish to remove her User name from the system and replace it with another, it potentially being embarrassing should another female friend see this current Username appear on-screen and query its reason for being ...

I appreciate that there appear to be various tech consequences of deleting this name if done incorrectly ( if at all possible) and, therefore, am praying that some members out there may be of assistance in this matter. Is anybody able to assist me with this problem, please ?

Any questions you might have will be answered to the best of my ability, just as I will endeavour to follow any advice to the best of my ability.

Thanking you in anticipation,
Fellow Member,

I have a windows 7 small PC with two user accounts "Guest" and the one I use. I rarely if ever log in on the guest account. However sometimes I would come back to this PC and notice it is logged in as guest. This usually happens in the morning. This is a PC only I ever use yet I often see it signed in as guest without my doing. I've also noticed that after this happens my bluetooth headset acts odd. I can hear feedback from the microphone. As in instead of playing just the sound from the PC on the earphones I can barely hear them and instead I hear the sounds from the microphone. What could be causing this?

Think you might have a ghost there em could you not just disable the guest account and see if that makes a difference. But I never seen this problem but i would just disable the account if not in use

Windows 8.1
Started a new account, with admin privileges. Deleted old account also with admin privileges. Selected the "KEEP FILES" option. Deleted account. A folder pops up in desktop, with the computer's name. Under that folder there was another folder with old user name, and under that folder there was yet another folder also with old user name. Completely empty.
I don't have a restore point to which to retrieve my files. The c:\ disk says there is 600GBs of free space, previously I had only 300. All the library from my old user account have been wiped. I also checked Recycle Bin which is empty. The current account has admin privileges and is set to show hidden files. I was told that it might be under c:\Users. I checked that with CMD and two folders were titled "." and "..", they don't show under file explorer.

I am running Recuva right now, but from what I understand that won't be able to restore file names and fragmented files, which are both critical. I also had an encrypted file with a none standard extension which might be ignored by Recuva.

A:Deleted User Account, Selected Keep Files, lost all files

Hello Abe, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but this is a perfect example of why you should always back up anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe.

I hope Recuva may be able to recover your files for you.

Did you have any system images or Windows backups to restore them from?

I'm confused about these issues. In my Users folder I currently have the following below shown folders,
(all of these will open in a file manager except the Default User folder which I surmise is a Junction thing ?)

Administrator <-(now showing since I activated the built in Admin)
All Users
Default <-(can open upon clicking)
DeFault User <-(does not allow opening even by admin acct)
Guest <-(no password acct)
Std_User <- (non-Admin but still pswd access)

Of all these folders the only ones I created are the original user acct of UserMe and an acct I just created yesterday named Std_User. They both have passwords. I also have the original guest acct (no password) cannot remember if I created it, but I just enabled it.

I surmise windows puts these below folders in the Parent Users folder upon install of Win7 OS.

All Users
Defautl User

Since they've been there from the beginning.
Not sure what they are for (?)
Can the Default ones be renamed ? (if I even wanted to) Or deleted ?

But here's another aspect that's concerning me, I have apps that were installed (I presume under "install for all users") that are showing up in the guest acct.

IF I UNINSTALL AN APP from within the guest acct that was installed under the above said "install for all users" I'm guessing it also uninstalls it from other (all?) user accts ?

A:What are the win7 Default user folders for?

OK Users folders, are just for personal files (pictures, music, documents, shortcuts etc) they do not include programs, just short cuts to programs on your Desktop. You are correct that the default user layout is:
All Users
Defautl User
When you install an app, like an Anti-Virus or another app that is for all users, it will put icons in the Desktop folder of the All Users folder, this will add this icon to any user account you create because it is in the All Users folder. If a program is not for all users, just the user you are logged in as, then it will put an icon on your desktop, and your user\desktop folder but not in any other users desktops folders, unless it is in the All Users\desktop folder. Same with pictures and documents.
This does not affect the program, if it is installed for one user, you can still access the program from C:\Program Files (x86) or C:\Program Files. And create your own shortcut by right clicking it choose Send To..Desktop(make shortcut)
The Public user folder is for sharing files with other users on your network. You can add files to this account to share.
The Default and Default User profiles are for if your profile that you login to becomes corrupted, Windows will load the Default User Profile, so that you can login, then you can troubleshoot your user account. Your user files will still be accessible from C:\User\[YourUserName]
The Guest account is loaded but not activated. It is so you can assign a profile for someone to ... Read more

#2 wise search on Windows 7 gadgets, M$ took down their own support for them after v8 came out:
Windows 7 gadget downloads - Dogpile Web Search

#3 I don't use constant tools for monitoring, if I want to know the scoop one option is Resource Monitor built into 7.
cpuid.com has good tools which are nice testing tools and free:
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Also Speccy from piriform.com will give you more info then most would want, but a cool tool, also:
Speccy - System Information - Free Download

#6 check the recording device levels: Levels tab off properties from the input device. (right click the volume icon from your task tray and take recording devices)

I have just set up a new Win7 computer and am trying to access the HD across a home wireless network from my XP laptop. XP can see the Win7 but it is asking for USER NAME and PASSWORD. I put in, what i think is, my user name on the Win7 in the dialog box and then put in the password that I use to log into the Win7 when I boot it up but it rejects these. I went to look on the Win7 for user name and password and can't seem to find it in PROPERTIES of COMUPTER.

Can anyone help me with where the info it's asking for can be found?

A:How do I identify my user name to log onto Win7 from XP across network

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Make sure that you have identical user names and passwords on both Windows 7 and XP computers if you wish to access each computer. If you have created and/or own the computers you would have been an Admin and able to create the User Accounts. Here's a tutorial on how to access and create a user account in Windows 7.

Hello all,
My system has started BSOD'ing when switching users. Normally I log on as an admin, but I want to create accounts for my kids with much lower rights, obviously. The system has been stable for a few years, but now that I've created the kids accounts, I see BSOD frequently when switching to one of their accounts.

I think I got all the info requested from the SF Diag tool attached.

Thanks for any assistance!

Apparantly and driver problem. Driver verifier may be able to tell us which one
Driver Verifier
I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it do... Read more

Hi all. Just joined the forum after getting a new computer with Win7 Home Premium 64 on it. I think I may have botched setting up the User Accounts. I've searched the Internet for answers, found this forum, and read through numerous User Account posts plus read many of the forum's tutorials. But I didn't find an answer to my specific "problem". So...here goes....

My computer came with 5 User Accounts shown under the C:\Users folder. Three of them had the "locked" padlock icon shown...All Users, Default User, and James. Two were "unlocked"...Default and Public.

The James folder (locked) was created by the manufacturer of the computer, and contained the "normal" items and folders you would expect to see under it. "James" was also the default User Profile that loaded when the computer booted.

I created a New User profile for myself (I'll call it "John Doe" here instead of using my real name) and gave it Administrator rights. When I rebooted the computer, I had the option then of "changing users" to either "James" or "John Doe". BUT...my "John Doe" User folder never showed up under the Users tree. That confused me, and I went on a mission in Win7 to try and "fix" that. But I think I may have really messed things up before I got "done".

To make a long story short(er), I played around with the "Share" and "Take Ownership" options in Win... Read more

A:Win7 User Account Confusion

It wasn't exactly the same, because I didn't have a James account to deal with, but I fouled up my own user account with Takeownership when I first installed W7, and I couldn't straighten it out, so I deleted the account and created a new one. That solved my problem, but it sounds as though your's goes deeper. It may be necessary to do a reinstall, or at least a System Restore to prior to the changes that you made...if possible.

Is it possible to create a custom user group within Windows 7 Pro? Unfortunately the systems are not on a domain, and any solutions I've found thus far have been for domain environments.

The user account would be able to remove account lockouts and reset account passwords of users, but not administrators. Basically, I need a standard user account with this capability. Is this possible on standalone Win7 systems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello V,

Yes, you are able to create a new group in Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc). In Local Users, click on the Groups folder in the left pane, right click on a empty spot in the middle pane, and click on New Group. After creating the new group, you can add users to be a member of the new group.

Also have sandboxie installed which is also perfectly working in the main account (forcing firefox browser sandboxed). If I start the 'run browser sandboxed' icon on desktop in the user account it starts internet explorer (which isnt the default browser) probably because firefox doesnt have a profile to start.

My computer has been acting weirdly and crashing randomly for a couple of months now, but starting yesterday, it just started crashing and presenting BSOD's left and right. For a moment I thought it was due to Chrome, which has always tended to hang or crash (either itself or Windows in its entirety). But today, after logging in, the welcome screen and the subsequent black screen with a cursor took 5-10 time as long as it normally does, and now I can't log in without a BSOD and automatic restart. I did try to update Java to Version 31. I'm not sure how smoothly the installation went -- Chrome crashed sometime during or after the installation -- but I uninstalled Java from Add/Remove Programs. No new hardware, no new software besides Java and PRTG Traffic Grapher (both uninstalled), no new Windows Updates installed. The computer is a notebook, HP Pavilion dm4-1060us, all hardware OEM. Basic System Info: Windows 7 SP1, x64 Originally installed OS, OEM System about 1.5 years old Have never re-installed the OS CPU: Intel Core i5 M430 @ 2.27GHZ GPU: Intel HD Graphics Requested files are attached. Hi guys

I got a question hoping someone can help me out with some info.
We switched to Win7 recently and have serious trouble with user rights management.

I am not admin but standard user on my workstation - that's why I cannot access any folders on C:\ (cannot even delete shortcuts on my desktop created by the admin)...

For several reasons I need access on C:\ - not necessarily on the Windows folder (maybe fonts) because I do not want to install software - but at least on all Programs folders and subfolders on C:\.

My IT guys tell me this is not possible under Win7 anymore - i have to choose specific folders. This is not acceptable for me...because I cannot predict that and want to avoid unnecessary workload...

Can anybody proof that there is definitely no possibility to manage user rights for standard users under Win7 to gain full access on all (sub-)folders on C:\ except the windows folder
Thank you so much for help!

Hi. I'm newto this forum. I recently handed my laptop to the company computer gimp because he had to set me up on the company domain. He has done this, but I cannot change my desktop or add a new user in the control panel. I am wondering what else has been done. It also requires admin privileges for new installs, but mine is an admin account. On the local profile, I can change my desktop, but I can't add a new user (the option has been removed from control panel user accounts). On the network profile, I cannot do anything, yet I am admin. Is there a way to remove these restriction, certainly on the local profile. Is there a way to see the most recent changes to the system and undo these? Does it have anything to do with the isa firewall and its config (I think not because nothing changes when I disbale it). Any thoughts on how to regain FULL control of my Lenovo laptop with WIN 7 x64? Thanks.

A:Why can't I change my desktop or add a new user in Win7 Pro x64?

Minim, Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

Your system administrator has joined your computer to their domain where the features are disabled for regular users. You might think your an admin but something tells me that it is not a true admin.

Have you talked to the system admin about your problem?
They might have a really good reason to not allow you to add users as when your on a domain, the Active Directory has control of users and priv's.

The only way to regain full control of your laptop is to wipe and start over but then your going to get into trouble with your administration.

Best to talk to the admins.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 desktop using Office 365. I have had to rely on the Microsoft's free Tech Support a number of times; upgrading to Windows 10, elements of office not working, etc. Several times, rather then fixing the issue at hand the Techs have created new user profiles. This leads to my current problem. Under the "Users" file their are 10 users listed: Bob, bobhu, Default.migrated, Default AppPool, Public, Robert, Temp, Test, Test2, Test Profile with only 2 actual user accounts on the computer. This has led to multiple duplicate files in different locations on the computer. For some reason (it may be related to installation of Windows updates), the computer will ocassionally revert back to a previous user profile. If not caught immediately this can lead to updating of old files rather then the current version of a file. For example: When using Quicken it will revert back to data files that may be a year old. if not paying attention when adding new data this could lead to erroneous data.

Sorry if this is long winded but I wanted to try to fully explain the issue. My basic question is, "What would be the best way to resolve this problem permanently, keeping in mind that I do not want to lose any old data, documents, pictures, etc. I have 3 solutions in mind (listed in no particular order), (1) pay a local computer shop to fix the issue (2) Try to resolve the issue myself [some tech help/knowledge may be required] (3) Use Microsoft Support on-l... A:Windows 10-Multiple User files-Duplicate Files

Do it yourself.

Keep the two actual User accounts plus Public and Default.

Then, working on one of the others at a time, copy or move any files desired to Public or one of your actual accounts. Then remove that non-wanted account and its data. (In Windows 8.1 this would be in Control Panel - User Accounts; should be similar in Windows 10.) If the User account does not appear in the list of user accounts then you can just delete the folder from C:\Users.

I'm running Windows 10, and Excel 2013. I just upgraded to Win 10. Before I did so, I had no problems at all with Excel. Now that I've upgraded to Win 10, Excel no longer remembers my "recently opened workbooks".

Each time I do that, while I am still using Excel, the display of recent workbooks is what I want. But invariably, after closing Excel, after I log off, then restart Windows, the next time I start Excel the check box is blank and there are no recently opened workbooks at all on the Excel start page!

Anyone have any clues what's wrong or how to make Excel do what I want?
