I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You can check if variable fan speed is working, monitor temps using Speedfan.

So lately i've had a few problems with my laptop fans where as soon as I start up the computer one of them just runs at full speed. Even tho the Laptop it self is not doing any heavy work, nor is hot at all. In task manager the computer doesn't show any tasks taking up high CPU usage, while HWiNFO tells me one of my two fans are running at full speed. Any idea what I could do to fix this issue? If you're missing some info just tell me and i'll hook you right up

First question... Are they high speed hubs?
I have an older 4 port Dlink here that's never run 480... looking into the chip on the internal circuit board, it turns out to be a 12mbps chip... you can slow them down, but you can't scare them into running faster.

Hi,

My previous operating system (Vista Home Premium) crashed and I lost everything. I also misplaced the installation disc so I just decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything works fine aside from the games don't accommodate the full desktop screen even though it is already set to full mode. I can see black screen on both left and right sides of the screen.

I already searched this forum for the solutions but still no luck. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 125 and my processor is Intel Core 2 Duo. I don't know if that helps...

Additional information: I boot into safe mode and all the games display fine.

Thanks in advance to those who can help.

I have a 3 year old compaq pro. It's clean and doesn't work too hard. All okay until today.Turned it on and after a minute or so the psu cooling fan started to ramp up to full speed. Then found that there was no display output to the projector it's used with.Have cheked several times. On power up, CPU fan starts. PSU fan turns for a second or so and stops. Repeats, then runs at 'normal' speed. The hard disk spins and the LED indicates hard drive is working. No video output. Tried a VGA monitor as well, nothing. Then after a minute the fan accelerates to full speed and just keeps going. Tried blowing out what little dust was in it, un-plugged and re-plugged all the connectors. No joy. What's the most likely suspect?

I ran the Intel program that identifies the chip speed, it said 1.2 GHz. Then I went over to the system propeperties panel, and it says "Intel Processor 1200 MHz (next line) 598MHz, 504MB of RAM"
How fast is my processor running? As far as I can tell, I have set the processor to be running at full speed (it is a ULV Pentium M) but is it, could it, be running at half speed?
PLease help. If someone can at least tell me what is going on, then i might spend the $$ to call IBM. If its something simple, then I'd rather not.

Thank you!

I have a problem mith my U41-70. Lately my laptop fan will run full speed as soon as I boot it up. The sound from the fan is really annoyying me. It also affecting the performance of the laptop. The laptop feels very slow and running apps will hang ocassionally. It is hard to do any work on this computer with problems like this. Hopefully someone can help me solve this problem.

A:U41-70 fan running full speed

Sounds like the fan is working hard due to dust blocking the air passages.    Computers are like electrostatic dusk collectors, so you have to clean them regularly to keep them running at their optimum potential.   First I would use a vacuum cleaner hose and see if you can suck out any dust from the vents   Next, open OneKey Optimizer and see if you have the Dust Removal feature, and if so run it.    That will run the fan at high speed both forward and reverse and try to blow out dust.   Stand back and prepare for a cloud of dust if it has not been run  Click on this link if One Key Optimizer is not installed to install. U41-70 OneKeyOptimizer dowloadhttp://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds102517 How to install and operate the One Key Optimizerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxiGkJc8NuM  If you do not have the Dust Removal option, buy some canned air for cleaning electronics and use that to try to blow out any dust you can, starting with blowing through backwards with the vaccuum on the oppostite vent. If the air flow is restricted, the CPU will heat up, and its performance will be degraded, so keeping it dust free is very important. Good Luck

Hey guys,

I'm a 3D artist, and I'm currently rendering out a whole load of frames. I'm using a reasonable, Sony Vaio laptop for the task, which has an Intel i7-720QM, however I'd like to know what CPU speed it's currently operating at.
I know that it says it runs at 1.6Ghz as standard but then can ramp up to 2.8Ghz, I just wondered if it truly was going at that speed whilst it's rendering.

A:How to know if CPU is running at full speed ?

The easiest way to tell is to run something like CPU-Z in the background while you are applying a load to the processor.

Hi,

I have a problem with my laptop. Sometimes while running a full screen program (no specific program caused the error) a BSOD would occur.
My Hardware:

(Vista) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
(for more specific hardware information please check the dxdiag.txt I've attached)

I've never re-installed the OS and it came pre-installed in the laptop.

Thanks for your help.

A:BSOD mostly while playing full screen games

Hi,

Multiple different errors and bugchecks, software related errors but there's also a mention of memory corruption in there, so I'll want you to run a Memtest just to be sure. Since you mentioned you're BSOD'ing in Full Screen games, I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling your graphics card drivers to ensure this is not software related as far as graphics drivers go.

Few drivers mentioned as faults:

Netw564.sys was mentioned in a dump as a cause (Intel Wireless WiFi Link Driver). Update here to be sure.

usbvideo.sys was also mentioned, but I believe something is driving that to fault.

I have Windows XP and had a quick question.

Is there any way to play a full-screen game (like Sim City) in a window instead of in its default full-screen setting? I want to be able to play the game and have access to my computer desktop as well, so that I can use AIM, browse the web, check e-mail, etc. I remember being able to do this on an older system by installing a utility, but I forgot what it was called and don't even know if it would work with XP.

Any ideas?

So here's my dilemma:

After this problem with Bsods and such my video card only wants to run at x4 speeds. It was running at x16 speeds when I first installed windows. Now for some reason it only wants to stay at x4 sometimes it will go to x8 after a reboot.

What are you guys' thoughts? I have the latest 11.11 drivers from ati's site. Both power plugs from psu into the card are in place.

I feel like I'm taking a performance hit here. I ran a furmark and the scores have dropped since I installed windows and it was at full x16.

A:Vid card not running at full x16 speed.

This is kind of tricky, if the hardware is seeing it that way it's not a windows problem, it's a hardware issue. If windows is somehow dumbing down the hardware. I could only blame chipset or graphics drivers for incorrectly interpreting things.

I've encountered an usual problem... I recently had to pull 1 of the 2 video cards in my PC because it appears to have failed. Ok, not a big deal - not the first time I've had a video card die on my. (GTX 460's). Not sure if that's related to the problem or not, but thought it was worth mentioning as it's the only recent hardware change I've made.
A few days later - when I boot the PC, 2 of the case fans are running at maximum speed - the rear-facing case fan, and the fan mounted behind the motherboard - roughly behind the CPU. The CPU is liquid cooled. All temperatures are running under 50 degrees C, and this is from a cold start after hours of non-use, so no built up heat. The fans persist at maximum speed and never slow down.
I tried the trick I found online re: unplug and disperse any current to get the BIOS to reset, and it worked the first time but has not since.
Anyone have any ideas? The system still loads and appears to be running normally - no problems running any applications (including gaming) - but these fans are very loud at this speed.

A:PC fans running full speed

How are they connected controlled?

If they are attached to motherboard headers (not recommended), verify the BIOS configuration. Depending on the motherboard brand/model, there may be options for how they are controlled.

If that has no effect, the onboard controller could be faulty. You could simply install a fan controller, which is the recommended way to control fans anyway.

Hello, everyone.

I have posted this in other forums, too, in the hopes of getting some ideas.

I recently installed Windows 10 on a desktop computer and everything went as smoothly as it could have, with no problems at all. So, motivated by how well everything went with that computer, I decided to upgrade Windows on a laptop as well. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L855, with an Intel Core i3-2370M processor.

The upgrade process on the laptop also completed successfully. Now both computers have Windows 10 and so far it has been running... fine.

The only unusual thing I've noticed with the laptop is that the CPU fan wants to run at full speed all the time, even though the computer is never used for any "processor-intensive" tasks. The normal activity on it is browsing the web, watching videos, playing music, writing text files and really nothing more than that.

I immediately found this odd and I have come to the conclusion that something in Windows 10 is responsible because:

a) This never happened in Windows 7, which was the previous operating system the computer had, and

b) This doesn't happen when I start the computer and go into a different operating system, namely Ubuntu.

Well, thank you everybody for reading and please give some advice if you have any. Surely I'm not the only one who has run into this situation.

A:CPU fan running at full speed in Windows 10

My laptop fan also seem to run more, not all the time, but more. Have not had time to research.

A:Fans running full speed

Yes, one idea. Sometimes a device in the system does not "enumerate" correctly during the BIOS boot. Put simply, the BIOS "names" each connected device and keeps a list (checksum). When you boot the connected devices are checked against the list. If one of the devices on the list does not respond correctly then the system has to try and resolve the discrepancy. The BIOS will not completely release the system to the OS until it has done so. If it gets stuck in a loop then it will search forever.

I believe what you accomplished was some sort of "soft" ClearCMOS. By cutting power and draining the caps you allowed the system to refresh. It found all it's parts and you are good to go.

This type of behavior does not need to indicate any failing parts. It can happen simply due to a minor power fluctuation or data logjam. One time does not make a pattern. Keep your eye on it and if it happens more often then you may need to look into it further.

Hi I recently put together a new computer and i have been getting blue screens with the following STOP Code:

This has happened mostly when playing Diablo 3 in full screen. I have also had it happen while playing starcraft 2. I haven't tried any other games yet. I have been able to play the games for longer periods of time when playing in windowed mode but i have had it blue screen still when windowed. It has also given BSOD once when just trying to open the game after a previous crash.

I have read about this hardware issue on this board and people were hinting at it being the ram and or the SSD firmware.
I have checked the SSd firmware and it is up to date. I have also updated the BIOS

The board seems to have an issue when i have ram in the four blue slots. it used to give me a b7 error code on the display on the board and get stuck in POST. This is a common problem with this board but i don't know if its causing the BSOD. to fix this i took the stick out of the A0 Slot. This still leaves 6GB of ram and i've never seen the computer use more then 2.5GB while i was gaming.

I have also been checking the CPU and GPU temperatures via win 7 gadgets and they haven't been about 47degrees C while gaming. There has been no spikes in any of the CPU's before the crash either.

I have attached the .dmp files and the performance monitor results. Can anybody help me.

Analysis:Your crashes primarily indicate hard disk problems. This could mean hard disk corruption, bad sectors, a failing hard disk, Windows files or registry corruption, viruses, or memory problems. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log (you may need to search for wininit instead of chkdsk).
For any drives that do not give the message:

Hello,

Code:
OS Version: 6.1.7600 N/A Build 7600
You're missing Service Pack 1, highly suggested that you install this as it secures the PC and fixes a whole lot of problems.
You can download through either Windows Update, or download from here Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center

This could be the main cause of the BSOD, but here's some suggestions:

Code:
dtsoftbus01.sys Fri Feb 21 03:49:36 2014 (53072130)
This driver belongs to Daemon Tools, known problem with Windows. Please uninstall.
On a side note:

Having a cracked version of Windows can also cause some errors. I highly suggest you purchase a legit version, and work from there also.

I have a dual monitor setup and I try to keep my downloads running on one of my monitors (with bit torrent or just regular downloads) while I try to play a game, even an offline game, and my download speed will immediately drop to say 20 or 30kbps where it was downloading at least 200kbps not a second before I was running the game. If I minimize the game I can watch the download speed dramatically return to normal 200kbps, putting the game back on top of course drops it back down. What the heck is going on? How do I fix this? I've already tried reformatting. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Like_a_wombat
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect the power cord and all the peripherals, hold down the power button for 15 sec and then plug back everything and try to power on and then shut down again.
If the issue is still the same, run the diagnostics from f12 menu .
The issue could be either motherboard or the power supply unit.
If possible you can try a different power supply unit.

If you have a core 2 duo CPU that is not running at full stock speed, the reason is Intels SpeedStep

So for example:

E4400 stock speed is 2ghz.

200x10= 2ghz <--stock
200x6= 1.2ghz <-- speed step reducing power at idle

E6600 stock speed is 2.4ghz
266x9= 2.394ghz or 2.4ghz <-- stock speed
266x6= 1.596ghz or 1.6ghz <--speed step reducing power at idle

When your PC is at idle, speed step kicks in to reduce the mulit, and vcore. This allows lower power consumption, and heat. Its basically the same as AMD's Cool-n-quiet. When you put your system on a full load, speed step should put the stock multiplier back.

To better understand how to figure out the default or stock multiplier, you will need to know what your CPU's rated FSB is. For example:

All Allendales (E4xxx) or C2D Pentiums (E2xxx) are rated at 800mhz. They are Quad Pumped so you divide by 4.
800/4=200mhz.

All the older Conroes (E6300/6400/6320/6420/6600) are rated at 1066mhz.
1066/4=266mhz.

Newer C2D (E6550/6750/ect) are rated at 1333mhz.
1333/4=333.25mhz.

So to determine your actual or default multiplier for 4 examples:

E4400 2ghz
2000/200=10 <-multi

E2140 1.6ghz
1600/200=8 <-multi

E6400 2.13ghz
2130/266=8 <-multi

E6750 2.66ghz
2660/333=7.9 or 8 <-multi (this would be rounded)

You can use a handy tool to monitor your multiplier with CPU-Z. To simulate a load, try using Orthos Stress Prime 2004. That is one easy program to load dual or quad core CPUs. In running that progr... Read more

I have 4 Gigs of DDR2 PC-5300 RAM. 2 sticks of it are A-Data, they advertise to run at 667mhz, I believe this is them:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211061

The other 2 are PNY that also advertise on the packaging to run at 667mhz, I think this is them, only mine have heat spreaders:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8221453&type=product&id=1166236338366

There are 2 problems, one is that Windows XP Media Center (x86, so 32-bit) is only recognizing 3.25 gigs in system properties. The other thing is that when I run CPU-z, it tells me that the RAM is only running at 335mhz average. It reports the PNY sticks as running at 333mhz and the A-Data running at 400 mhz. Both, however, say they are capable of 667mhz. Here is a picture of my mobo's RAM slots:

http://claninfectionist.com/images/misc/untitled10.jpg

And one of the RAM installed:

http://claninfectionist.com/images/misc/untitled11.jpg

I just recently installed XP Media Center over Vista, but Vista (I had 64 bit) recognized all 4 gigs, though it also reported them running slower than 667. Is there anything I can do anout this or should I just stop complaining that I'm losing a few hundred megahertz?

Thank you in advance.

EDIT: Here is a picture of all the parts in my computer, I didn't have one of just the RAM modules, but you can see them:

http://claninfectionist.com/images/misc/untitled4.jpg

A:RAM not being fully recognized, and not running full speed

You might not have anything wrong. 32 bit operating systems, whether XP or Vista, will not recognize the full 4GB of RAM, a 64 bit OS will. The 3.25GB is about right.

Keep in mind your RAM is DDR2. DDR is double data rate so it will be reported in the BIOS and CPU-Z at about half of its rated speed.

Yesterday I installed RC1 of Windows 7 on my HP 6910p.

Afetr install I immediately noticed that the notebook makes much more fan noise then under Windows XP.
The fan seems to be running constantly and whenever I seem to do something a bit graphical it goes at full speed.

Are there any other (HP 6910p) users that have the same experience?
Is there something I can do / tweak to make my notebook quite again.

I have already disabled the superfetch however this only reduces the HDD activity.

A:Fan constantly running at full speed (HP6910p)

If you have a non integrated video card (No idea what the term for that is), try accessing the setup for it (Nvidia offers the "Nvidia control panel") and checking the fan settings - it may be set to max.

If this does not work, try entering your BIOS and checking the settings.

It MAY be happening because Windows 7 requires more out of your PC than XP (Which I assume you upgraded from, based on your OS information), so it's attempting to cool it down. Try running HWMonitor (CPUID) and checking the temps of your CPU / GPU / HDD.

I have a computer here that has recently started getting BSoD very frequently. It seems to be happening more and more often now. The error varies and I have included as much information as I could in the upload. It always happens while running a full screen program like a game. I have tried memtest86, and the computer crashes and shuts down before the test can complete. I have uninstalled the graphics card drivers, ran Driver Sweeper, and reinstalled. The problem persists. Anyone who can check this bug report and give me a clue what to do would be appreciated. Thanks.

So my issue is with all my full screen games, after a few minutes to a few hours the screen go's black and an error pops up on screen.

Normally I would just put it to those settings, but the issue is these are basically my setting in the nevidia control panel my settings are exactly that. The only thing I could see is the advanced display settings are 59hz. But you can't set it to 60 because windows 7 rounds down instead of up now.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP!

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.
