Q: blank page for system restore, and can't load active x control....no option to

I no longer have my system restore, I get a blank white page. I also can't do windows update, I can't load the active x control, nor do I get the option on top to do so. Could someone PLEASE help, I don't want to have to reformat?

Preferred Solution: blank page for system restore, and can't load active x control....no option to

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please help if you can. Internet Explorer kept freezing with hourglass, So, I did a system restore to return the computer settings to the last date that it worked properly. I returned it successfully, but internet explorer will not load at all now. It keeps giving me the message that it has to close because of an error and directs me to press 'end now'. I tricked it into opening through my 2Wire gateway and went to microsoft update to try and re-install the missing components. Gave me error message that windows installer was not installed or was disabled because i was in safe mode (which I was not). Are there steps I can take to correct this. Other windows programs are also affected. Such as System Information, Search and Help.

Good morning, hope some one came help me. I am running Win XP SP2 it has been running for about a year. What I noticed was that I went to search for a file in the "Start search" feature and that page comes up but it is blank with no icons or text. There are no error messages and it closes, but just nothing on the page. I then went to do a system restore in the "accessoires system tools" page and it also is blank with no text or icons. My system restore is turned on and I have used it before. Any idea on a fix for this or is there a DOS command for "system restore" to maybe correct this. Help.

When I right click My Computer on Vista Start menu the page says "The page failed to load"

I enclose a screenshot of the error.

I was also get "the application has failed to start because WINBRAND.dll was not found" when running

From RUN

This has now been fixed by downloading WINBRAND.dll and copying it to c:\windows\system32

But "The page failed to load" still happens when right clicking My Computer and choosing properties.

I did a SFC / Scannow and something weird happened. The Command Window had an error (apologies - forgot to note which but will rerun in a moment) however the CBS Log File showed no errors and indicated SFC ran successfully.

I will post the results of SFC in a few moments

Thanks for your help.

Hi there.
I recently had a trojan dnschanger on my laptop. I tried using malwarebytes program to remove it several times and then gave up and sent it in to get repaired at a shop in town. They told me there was no infection and sent it back to me. I reran the test and sure enough it was gone. but...

What had originally made me try using malwarebytes to scan ( avg, spybot s&d, and adaware did not find anything) was that my browser was acting strange. When I do a Google search and click on one of the results, it will load a blank page saying 'done' in the bottom corner, then after 5 seconds or so it will then load the page i wanted.

For instance, I click on "hxxp://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-115088-using-web-browser-page-loads-but-screen-blank" search result and it puts this:

into the top bar and sits on the blank,'done' page for 5 or 10 secs then goes to the "hxxp://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-115088-using-web-browser-page-loads-but-screen-blank" page after.

It is driving me crazy. This is doing it in firefox 3.5.7 and also in ie 8.0.7600.16385 - (i rarely use ie)

When I bring up Internet explorer many websites will not display correctly. For instance here http://xbox360.ign.com/ much of the page will display properly, but the headline story will not. Also when the advertisement/redirect page comes up when you first click on the page(sometimes it doesn't) the advertisement will not come up nor will it redirect to the main page. If I click on link buttons nothing happens, a regular link works fine, just not the button style ones(I guess buttons is a good description heck I dunno)

Also when I go to web based mail pages much of the page will display, but the body of e-mails will not. When I use IM, such as Yahoo messenger, I can bring up the program and type in messages but the message window that displays replies remains blank. I can neither see my message or the persons reply.

I tried system restore both in regular windows and safe mode and it is BLANK. I was told to go to RUN and type in "regsvr32 /i mshtml" but when I do it I get "mshtml was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, mshtml does not appear to be .DLL or .OCX file" So what now???

I know when this started I loaded a game and was asked to load some strange messenger program(something or other X) for chatting with other gamers during online matches. I loaded it by accident and un-installed and deleted it. Since then I cannot use messenger or internet explorer.

Hello,Well let me start off by saying I'm a newbie here! I am currently running Windows XP and just recently installed Norton 360. The problems below did not start until after I had successfully installed Norton 360. It was working fine until later that night. My wife had went on to the internet and after she finished that's when the problems showed up.My first problem is I can't restore my Active Desktop. When I press the restore button I get an error message. The error message reads:Internet Explorer Script ErrorLine: 65Char: 1Error: Object doesn't support this actionCode: 0URL: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BigSheriff/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.httDo you want to continue to run scripts on this page? Yes / NoProblem 2:I can not open the control panel, printer and faxes, my computer, etc... (the tabs on the start menu) The screen simply blinks (going to my orginal desktop) and goes back to that white (restore active desktop) screen. It seems like it resets it self because my quick launch icons disappear then reappear as if I restarted the computer. I have run my Norton virus scan, Spy Sweeper, and a couple of online virus scans but they could not find a problem. Please help I'm stumped! Usually I can figure these things out but I guess this one has got me!

It will be in Docs and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. * Delete them [One or more]. * Close the explorer window, re-click your desktop and click Refresh. * Make sure to then go back and RECHECK that box for view, and uncheck hide protected opsys files.. you really don't want those special files exposed all the time!madcraic.com

Hi I have been having problems ever since I installed the updated version of McAfee that comes with my aol subscription. Now I cannot restore my Active Desktop, I get the white screen and when I click on the command I get an error message about the script on the page. I know I have done this before sometime but I cannot remember how to fix it. I did look at the other threads on this subject but wasn't able to find anything that helped.

The other problem since the new McAfee is that my system restore points will not restore, it goes through all the motions, restarting etc, and then just says it cannot be restored to that point and to try another one. I tried them all with the same result. This morning I got up to having no restore points at all. They are all gone.

Can anyone help in non super technical terms please?? THanks so m uch.

On the subject of System Recovery

For some reason, the option for System Restore disappeared from the Tools file of my Accessories Folder in the Start Menu.
In order to recover, I Googled but after hours of searching could find NO answer which helped to recover the option even though a lot of people seemed to
be having the same problem.
After some fiddling around, I managed to resolve:-
1). Locate original System Recovery Icon = C:\Windows\system32\rstrui.exe
2). Right click and choose 'send-to' and Desktop from the options. Make sure it is a Shortcut you are sending and not the
actual exe file.
3). Rename the shortcut to 'System Recovery' (may need Admin priviledges).
4). In Windows Explorer, Click: Tools/FoldersOptions/View/Show Hidden Folder, Files and Drives
5). Locate & Move shortcut to :-
6). This is it - Just remember to close Tools/FoldersOptions/View/DON'TShow Hidden Folder, Files and Drives (Opposite of
Step 4).
I have a strong feeling that a downloaded application may have affected this Start item and as such I am running an additional Full
Virus and Malware Scan.
Whatever the case, I now have the option back in my Start/Accessories/Tool/System Folder although of course it was always
available in the Menu Tool Bar of 'Computer' under System Properties., but access is easier from Start Menu I think.

Bit of an odd problem, this.

A select few websites that had previously loaded quickly and without problems, plus several other websites I have tried to access through a search, have all had the same problem:

Clicking on a link, the page loads nothing (white screen) while the Status at the bottom of the screen is 'Done'. Then refreshing the page causes it to load so slowly that it practically grinds to a halt, continuing to display nothing but the blank white page.

Cached versions of the culprit pages work fine.

One day they worked fine, and the next, they had this problem. The pages in question all stopped loading correctly at the same time, which I doubt was coincidence.

All of the pages that all went 'blank' at this time, are forums. One in particular, has a home page/enter page that loads fine, but when I click to enter the forum itself, it then goes blank. No message or anything like that.

I've done simple things like disconnecting/reconnecting, and rebooting, with no luck. Hopefully someone can help me out here or offer some tips.

Friday morning i installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Proffesional SP1 on my PC. I installed all the latest Windows updates, including upgrading to SP2, then SP3. I've also installed the required drivers and the programs/software i'll be using.

Therefore, this morning i wanted to create a system restore point, however, the system restore option isn't there. I've looked in System Tools from the start menu but no option there. I've also right clicked My Computer > Properties, but no System Restore tab.

I think i may know why. School gave out XP Installation packs for students like myself, so we could install XP on our computers and use the PC to study. Anyway, when i right click the My Computer > Properties, it says:

Registered to:
All Users
Then my school name

Am i part of a domain then ? If so i won't have certain previlages correct ? Like the ability to access System Restore. Anyway, i've tried a few methods like the User Rights thing in gpedit. msc and still no option to do a system restore.

Any ideas on how i can get around this ?

A:No System Restore Option

You're not part of of domain. Joining a domain doesn't have anything to do with who the operating system is licensed to. Unless you entered domain information when setting up the networking or are on a network with a domain controller you should simply be in a workgroup.

Hey there people,

Recently, i have done some things on the computer that need to be reversed. I tried to go for the system restore feature the other day, but it was not where it was supposed to be. It wasn't anywhere, as a matter of fact. I tried typing in the run command, but that didn't work either. So i tried another way. I typed in "msconfig" in the run box. When the window popped up, i went to tools. I found system restore and clicked launch, but i got a error window saying the following:

"The system cannot find the file specified"

I somehow got a Spydawn system alert popup virus after downloading codecs from the 'net thinking it was safe, i was wrong. I knew i shouldn't have trusted the download but did it anyways.
I managed to get rid of some items that were sent to my desktop plus the system alert that was in my control panel-add/remove programs. I ran ewido, adware, spybot and smitfraud, it doesn't say smitfraud fix..? I even did all of this in safe mode too, but the system alert popup is still flashing in the bottom right corner but now i can not access internet explorer...can't make a connection to the internet.

I don't see anything referring to spydawn in the log.

My Hijackthis log displayed these files that appear to be part of my problem.
I have no internet connection so i can't show you the complete log unless i copy all of it word for word...which i did for just these particular ones that seem suspicious.

I am not sure if I am in the correct section, but I am trying my luck anyway.

Let me try to recap :

I was playing WoW on my lovely computer.

Then it crashed horribly. Freeze with stuttering sound loop. Then black screen, then "No signal". Computer still running, so I reboot manually.

Windows 7 failed to launch properly. I try to repair. Failed.

I try to make sure that the correct partition is active through command line, because the partition that seems to be used is not the usual C:, it still fail to miserably. ( I may have ****ed something up doing this ).

Then after hours, I manage to create a bootable USB, and I try to repair from it, still failed, but with some added text :

Repair details :
The following startup option will be repaired:
Name: {bootmgr}
Identifier : {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}

The following startup options will be added:

Path: Recovery\620a18e0-28f7-11e2-957d-90c77b59ad8b\Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition =E (114371 MB)

A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as: C:\Boot\BCD.Backup.0002

Which made me all happy and hopeful before it popped an error window with this :

My husband recently added a new hard drive to my HP desktop, and then went to Iraq so I have no idea how to fix this problem and he can't because he is over there. I have repeatedly tried to do a systems restore on the C drive, I could care less about the F drive it is just used for large files (presentations, video, etc.) but it has an OS on it as well. I really need the systems restore done on the C drive but everytime I try it, it says nothing has been changed, or no restore could be done at this point. Can someone please help me get this fixed, my computer is really slow, and just acting choppy all around, I don't have many things downloaded on it, just the basic OS and a few programs like the world clock and the office XP. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance, Twinksprite

A:Concerning Two Hard drives and System Restore Option

From what you describe you have some malware

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything they say.

Do these before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html,
put it in a permanent folder, run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

I recently replaced the hard drive in my laptop ASUS K60IJ and contacted ASUS for recovery disks. After installing the recovery disk along with drivers disk, I do not have the option to sleep or hibernate. Also, I cannot have a screensaver because it says my videocard is not compatible, my sound does not work because it says no device is installed, and the webcam will not work because it says it is being used by another program. I have never had any of these issues before replacing the hard drive and performing the recovery.

Contacted Tech support and was told that this problem is not possible.

I appreciate any advice/suggestions.

A:No hiberate/sleep option after system restore

Hello bailey8783,

It sounds like all of your device drivers are not installed.
Set your PC up so it will get drivers via Windows Update using this tutorial:
Device Installation Settings

Then check for updates and see if Windows finds driver updates.

I am running Windows Vista on a Gateway ML6721 Notebook. Last week, Windows automatically ran updates, (Not sure which ones, I apologize!) and since then, I have been getting an error message that reads:
The file ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt

I put in the disc that is marked Gateway recovery, ran Startup repair, and accepted the prompt to restore to an earlier time. The computer would then work fine. This happened every time I turned on my computer last week. When I shut it down, even though I would select regular Shut Down, not Install Updates and Shut Down, when rebooted, it would go right to updates, update the computer, and then the same message would display. I would fix it by running Startup repair, and accepted the prompt to restore to an earlier time.

However, this option is no longer working. I tried to do a system restore on the disc, and it fails. When I tried to do that I got an error message, saying that it failed. I cannot recall what it says right now because I am running startup repair.

Last night, I tried following the advice on this page:
http://support.gateway.com/s/Checkli...70813111.shtml, and tried to repair the ntoskrnl.exe using the command prompt in recovery. It did not work.

Now when I start my computer, all I get is a black screen. It is not a problem with the light in the screen itself because when I put in the recovery disc, it goes to that screen no problem. (A couple of times when I ran Startup recover... Read more

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)

I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.

Pattern - "Restart to install updates"
Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)

"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails
"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.

Then I can get back into Windows.

As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates.

What could be going on?

They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)

I can give you a list of what they are if that helps?

A:No Boot after updates, System Restore only option availabl

You could run this batch file as Administrator:

I have used it myself with no bad results.
It cleans the Windows Update cache.

I just now used it & cleaned out several cached updates.

It may or may not help your situation.
It won't hurt to try it.

If it doesn't help you could run sfc /scannow & then Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth & reboot & run sfc again.
Both need to be run in Administrator command prompt.
They can take up to an hour to run & finish.

If you decide to try these, post back with results.

i just got internet connection after a while and it seems to have updated a few applications, also downloaded a virus which changed my homepage.i could not perform a system restore.now my avast antivirus seems to have caught a few viruses and they have been deleted.but i still cant enable system restore,it says restart the system and try again.there is no run option in start menu and task manager cant be opened either.please help.

A:no run button and no task manager option and cant run system restore.

For the Run option in the Start Menu, try the following:

Right-click the Start button and select Properties, then Customize. Scroll down and put a check mark in the Show Run entry. If you're using the new Start panel, its on the Advanced tab.

It can also be opened with the Windows key + R.

If no luck, try this fix: Restore the Run Command

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

For System Restore:

Restore System Restore

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I have a problem. My office has many labs, but from a single lab when someone prints a word document onto a particular printer, it gives out an extra blank page. This blank page is not seen in the print preview unlike which was discussed in the previous forums.

This problem has been encountered only for word documents but not for .pdf files. I have tried even with a single page of word printing, it gives out another blank page. Can anyone resolve this problem. I dont think its the problem with the printer because it works well with other labs and .pdf files from this lab too. Anyways its a HP Laserjet 5SiMX.

A:Word document prints an extra blank page but that blank page is not seen in preview

Is the printer in question the default printer for the PC in that lab? Print preview shows how the document would appear based on the settings of the default printer - using another printer can cause changes such as this.

Here is my situation:
One 500GB HDD. Windows Vista Ultimate. First partition is 100GB, with a HDD called "Operating System HDD". Second partition is called "Main HDD". The size of the Main HDD can vary depending on whether it is back to normal and going at about 400GB (all the way), or being shrunk down to what it is now, 303.40 GB leaving allocation space to the right of it.

What I want to find out is how to give most (if not all) space to the Operating System HDD, because a partitioned system like this just doesn't work for me right now.
So far I think I have learnt that the allocation space has to be at the right of the drive you want to extend, but right now it is to the right of the second partition instead. How would I go about extending the OS partition all (or nearly all) the way?

Laptop is 2 months old running Windows 7, rarely used and has no extra hardware etc installed. Windows was pre installed with no discs in box
Today upon opening it has a black screen with press  F11 for recovery. Recovery runs using Cyberlink power recover but on completion it goes back to the black screen with  pressF11
I got into safe mode and advanced boot options but there was no option to system restore
Could anyone help with how to resolve this
Thanks very much

A:Black Screen- Press F11 for Recovery, no system restore option

There will be no system restore points after running Cyberlink power recover as that wipes the old windows and puts a new copy on the drive as I understand it.
At this point in time I would get a hold of the manufacturer for support and warranty since it is only two months old. Just curious, HP?
If it is an HP, What happens when you run the built-in hardware diagnostics. They should be available on the same screen as the Press F11 message.
Good Luck

I have been reading many threads on this issue and I am having the same problems others are having. My system has been loading slowly for a few weeks on CBSSPORTS.COM for fantasy stats. Then I started getting popups about my system being infected to download something to have my system cleaned (I ignored that). I went to Komando.com and downloaded PC TUNEUP (waste of money). I have been running Norton System works and it does a daily scan.

I read somewhere to download free ANTIVIR personal edition. It found a ton of stuff and
removed about 600 virus. Then Norton started working again and my computer was under attack and both programs were competing to remove the threats. I shutdown my computer and turned off the guard for ANTIVIR and let Norton handle issues...

My computer is still slow and I have been running ANTIVAR to find more errors.

Starting last night I no longer am able to fully load windows. A screen comes up that windows is missing printer.exe file adn it never finishes loading. It was doing this the last couple days, however, the system would finish booting up afterwards.

I ran ANTIVAR in safe mode and the computer booted up last night. I restarted it this morning and once again it does not want to fully load. I repeated ANTIVAR and it found no additional errors and the system simply will not finishes booting up again.

In safe mode I have no admin rights either.

Before we begin , i need you to uninstall AntiVir. The two Anti-Virus programs are conflicting and are causing some of your logon issues.
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes. To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". See How to Boot in "SAFE MODE" tutorial if needed.
Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete the infected files

You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace Infected file? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

While using the Duplicate File delete tool in Comodo System Utilities, the Ntfs.sys drivers were accidentally deleted. Everything worked fine until I shut down. The system would not boot. F8 would not get me to the Safe Mode screen. After about a billion tries hitting F8, the Safe Mode screen appeared. I chose Windows XP Professional OS and the option Command Prompt. When I keyed Enter, I got that same error message about the repair disk which I don't have. Hit F8 again(just held it down) and got Safe Mode screen. Keyed the option Safe Mode and when entered, got that same error message. Hit F8 again and got Safe Mode screen. Keyed option 'directories'. Got same error message and a list of drivers(sys32\ntfs.sys) not on list. I was not able to get into the Safe Mode screen again no matter how many times I hit F8. The keyboard and mouse work while Safe Mode screen is on but don't work when trying to boot the machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:can't perform system restore through command prompt. option in safe mode

Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

I am having problems ever since I did a "restore your computer to an earlier time" on my windowsXP service pack 2, E-Machine desktop. When I tried to un- do that restore, my system restore only displays a blank page and it says done in bottom right corner. I get the same blank page when I go to windows automatic update and McAfee security center. I keep getting an icon in my taskbar from McAfee saying my puter isn't protected. when I click on certain links on a webpage it does not go. I downloaded firefox since then (via a thumbdrive and my laptop) and it behaves better but it still won't do restore or windows updates. This makes me think it may be a windows problem. I have plenty of room on my disk, but was having allot of problems with anything adobe related before I did a restore. I'm at the end of ideas and would have already tried the dreaded repair with the disks but forgot where I put them. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
