Help I am unable to connect my grandmothers computer with the internet at all. Under bad advise she has wiped and reinstalled windows 7 onto her HP ProBook 4440s laptop model number 4440S-LAP and now it is unable to find wifi in the house while other devices in the house are able to connect to the wifi without problems. Upon further inspection of the laptop I found that even when connecting to the LAN it is still unable to connect to the internet and I have come to the belief that it might be the driver. If anyone could help of clarify what the problem may be I would highly appreciate the help
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I accidentally spilt tea on my keyboard of hp ProBook 4440s. I dried it the best as i could. Everything seems to work fine, only my trackpad is now not working. What should i do? Also is this ProBook 4440s keyboard spill proof? I am scared and afraid. How do I repair my trackpad?Read other answers
I have a HP ProBook 4440S notebook. I also have two monitors - an HP1740 and an HP LA2405. I'd like to set up dual monitors using the notebook. Can the graphics card drive both monitors? If so, I would have to use an HDMI cable with a male DVI-D connector to plug into the LA2405. I would use the standard D-15 cable to connect the 1740. If this works, would I be able to stretch the desktop to the 1740, or would they have to be split as two separate screens? Thanks
The ProBook 4440s (Technical Quickspecs at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14306_na/14306_na.pdf) can support 2 video outs, either 2 external (hdmi and vga) or the lcd panel and 1 external. Although HP does not support hdmi to dvi adapters, they are available and seem somewhat inexpensive so can be purchased for testing. Both hdmi and vga ports are usableRead other 4 answers

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.
I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.
Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.
I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.
When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.
Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.
Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.
I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I have just rebuilt a laptop for a friend. I downloaded the latest drivers for the wireless connection from Acer website. They have installed correctly.
I can connect the laptop to the router by wireless and I can browse the local network and see the other PC's BUT the internet is shown as not connected. Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. Other wireless devices (iPad for instance connect to the internet fine).
I have re-booted the router.
Anyone got any ideas?
Same with an ethernet connection?

Hi there, I'm having a bit of an issue with one of my computers. It's fairly new, running on Windows Vista.
I am able to connect to a wireless router (Belkin), but I am not able to connect to the internet on this one particular computer. Another desktop computer on the network is able to access the internet. I just get the error "Internet Explorer cannot display the page" on the laptop whenever I attempt to open IE.
I've read through quite a few similar problems on other sites, but have yielded no solution. Any suggestions?

I wonder if anyone can help. We recently installed a new wireless router, and all the other computers in our house can access the internet. But for some reason I can only connect to the network, even though it says there's full connectivity.
I called the customer careline for our internet providers, and they said it was a problem with my computer settings, rather than the router. But they said they couldn't advise me any further unless I paid for it, hence my need to look for advice elsewhere....
Hi carrickfergus, and welcome to TSG!
Please do the following:
Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.
In the Command Prompt, type ipconfig /all.
Copy (right-click and Select All > press Enter) the entire content of that window and paste it to your next reply.
Use a working computer to download and copy HijackThis to a USB flash drive. Plug it into your faulty computer and install the program:
Please click HERE to download HijackThis.
Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.
The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.
IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything
The OS of my laptop is Windows Vista Business 32-bit. In my home I access internet through wireless Linksys Access Point. My laptop is configured under "Alternate Configuration" to connect to the AP through static IP address. Since the last few days the internet is not getting connected and I get the following message -
"The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow Windows to connect:
Policy Provider: Windows Firewall
Filter Name: Query User
If the policy provider is Windows Firewall, click for information about adjusting Windows Firewall settings. If a different policy provider has been identified, check the provider?s documentation on how to adjust the policy settings."
In addition to Windows Firewall there is Outpost Firewall also installed on my laptop. I have tried a lot to change the settings under LAN but without any success.
More interestingly, when the TCP/IP setting of the adaptor is set under "General" tab instead of "Alternate Configuration" the internet gets immediately connected to the laptop. As I also sometimes connect through wireless router for which it is required to set the TCP/IP of the laptop to "Obtain an IP address automatically" I need to set the access point throgh "Alternate Configuration" only.
Please help to resolve my crisis. Thanks.
A couple a of weeks ago my computer became unable to connect to the internet after I turned it on one morning. I ran several scans for virus/adware/spyware using Norton, AVG Anti-Virus, and Ad-Aware. The results displayed nothing.
I was able to renew my IP Address using "ipconfig/renew" in the command prompt but nothing changed. I can also ping out to any website I have tried.
I tried using system restore and nothing happened. I tried re-installing my operating system and was met with "These Recovery CDs do not match your Compaq PC model." I did, however, receive these CDs with the pc.
Finally, I tried installing Firefox, after getting the download from a friend's computer, and was met with the same problems.

Anyhoo, just did a clean install of win 7 to deal with bugs and now having issues connecting wired to the network or the internet. I can connect fine wireless. Never had an issue just swapping wires and going wireless to wired. I get the error that there is no IP address, and I've tried "ipconfig/release->renew"
How does the computer connect to Internet, via DSL or Router?
If the machine is connected via Wireless or router, I suggest you bypass the router and connect to cable modem directly for a test. Then, please refer to the following steps to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically
a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter".
b. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties".
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties".
d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
e. Click "OK".
f. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties".
g. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
h. Click "OK".
i. Reboot the computer.
However, if the issue persists, please move on the next steps.
1. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and router (If it has one).
2. Upgrade the NIC driver.
3. Restart the computer to Safe Mode with Networking to check the result.
Hi, I am a computer tech. but I am stumped by this one. I recognise the scam involved, it is very common here in South Africa but this one doesn't quite fit the usual pattern. Normally they call you, take your money and leave you alone, or if you don't pay they lock you out of your pc. I've never known them to take your money and wait 4 months to lock you out.
My customer was contacted by a firm in March 2014 claiming to be called Global IT acting on behalf of Microsoft and that his copy of Windows was illegal. His copy of Windows 8 was, to the best of my knowledge, a legal, activated copy of Windows 8 which came pre-installed on the notebook. He allowed this person remote access to his notebook and was shown log files of all the errors. For a fee this person would fix all the errors and issue a new product key which would make Windows 8 legal. Payment was duely made (I really don't believe people still fall for this) and the notebook was "fixed". Until yesterday everything ran smoothly.
Yesterday he was unable to connect to any wireless network. Plugging in a cable did not resolve the issue. The router was tested and found to be working just fine and other computers can connect to the internet through it. So the problem is on the notebook. I was called this morning after two other technicians had failed to resolve the issue over a period of 6 or 7 hours. Initial examination reveals a folder on the desktop called "GLOBAL IT" which is not accessible from any account on ... Read more
Open a command prompt CMD > Right click > Run as administrator
At the prompt type:
net user administrator /active:yes
Log off and then log on. You should see the now enabled Administrator account. If not Reboot.
This will enable the super user account. Hopefully this will let you access the GlobalIT folder and see what it is doing.
I would also download and run Autoruns in the administrator account and look for any suspicious startup programs. Good Luck
Running XP Home SP3 on my Dell Dimension 3000. It was working fine until a while ago I restarted it, and then it decided not to connect to the internet. It says the LAN is connected, but nothing at all will connect to the internet. Occasionally, after various disable/enables, repairs, resetting router, etc., it will show 'Limited or no connectivity'. Usually, it will also get stuck in 'Acquiring IP Address'. I know it's not the router, as other computers are hooked up to it wirelessly, and my 360's hard wired to it.
I've restarted the computer again many times, attempted to use System Restore (Which doesn't work anyway, so, that didn't help at all), restarted the router, the modem, the modem and the router (every combination of restarting those and hooking them up, and waiting 30 seconds etc.), tried using different ethernet cables, everything that I could think of, but to no avail.
Everything I've found on the internet on this problem seems to be for the SP2 bug, but I'm running SP3, not 2, so I'm lost.
The only other thing I can think of doing is the Symantec restore, but I'd rather only explore that as a final option, as backing everything up and reinstalling drivers etc. isn't a whole lot of fun.
Also, I just noticed this one, it won't connect to routerlogin.net, despite supposedly being connected to the network. Don't know if that's relevant...

I've had a Vista PC for a while (since about 08), and the other day it stopped being able to connect to the internet. After checking the router settings, the router doesn't even acknowledge that the computer is connected to it, even though the ethernet cable is definitely working.
I suspect it's a problem with the computer's IP address. After opening command prompt and attempting to do the command ipconfig /renew, the only thing it does is give me a line that says "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC server is unavailable".
Of course, it's simply a hunch that it's an IP problem, and if it is, I have no idea what could be causing it. My computer restarted on its own and displayed a message right before all this started, but I didn't get a chance to see what the message said. Other than that, I have no idea what's going on.

i was connected to a hotel network which functioned perfectly well until yesterday afternoon. I could only get "local only" access using both the ethernet connection and the wireless connection and the network was unidentified.
after much googling, i tried reseting the tcp/ip, flushdns, reset winsock, removed all saved networks and wireless networks.
using the ethernet cable, i am unable to connect to the router at all, getting the 169.x.x.x ip. i tested the connection using a live linux cd and the connection was stuck at "obtaining ip address". when i try to ping the router i get the message "ping transmit failed, error code 1231"
using wireless lan, i managed to connect to the router but the connection is hgihly unstable, dropping back to "local access only" intermittently. when i ping the router, i get extremely high packet loss of upwards of 74%, with the message "destination host unreachable" most of the time.
i'm running windows vista home basic, and the linux system i tested with was backtrack 3.
is this a problem with the hotel's router or my computer's connectivity?
this problem is only present on my computer, which is a dell inspiron 1420. all other computers and even my cellphone can connect to the hotel's network without any problems.
Even though this might not be of any help in solving the problem itself, but obviously there seems to be a problem with your computer, and not the hotel's network. If all the other computers and even your celluar phone could connect to the Internet, then the problem can be pretty much isolated to your computer alone.
OK I will try my best to describe problem. I am not able to use my web browser. I can connect to the internet, but it will only show my connection. I can use safe mode and browse. I did clean out all caches. Ran a highjack - only thing I noticed was R3- default URL searchhook missing. I did spend hours with sbc/yahoo. I did run a virus scan, no virus found. It was a free trial of mcafee scan. Only found 3 adware. I did purchase Norton Antivirus 2007 to install. I guess it advertised it was to fix problems. Any help would gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance
I think we'd need a little more info. You say that you can connect to the internet, but can't browse when booted up normally, but in safe mode you can browse. Could you let us know the following;
Does your browser open ok when you start your machine normally, but when you type in a URL (e.g. www.bbc.co.uk) it doesn't go there?
When you say that you're connected to the internet, what do you mean? Is it that you have a network connection showing, or you have a wireless utility that shows you are connected to your router and the internet?
Could you do a Start | Run | 'cmd' and then type 'ipconfig /all' and let us know the details that it comes back with.
For some reason I am unable to connect to the internet using my desktop. When I check my network connections, the icon shows that I am connected; but when I open IE, I am unable to access any websites. My network card appears to be working, at least the lights at the back are flashing! I have reinstalled Windows and still no luck!
I know there isn't an issue with the Internet connection itself as I can connect using my laptop. My ISP has also been unable to help!

Here's my setup; I'm running my PC to a router, that has a Charter cable internet modem connected to it. Another PC connected to this router is able to access the internet.
I believe the router and cables are in working order, as I have tested them and tried changing my cables with the other PC's.
I am shown as connected to the router (LinkSys), but can't access the internet, or ping any sites. I have no firewall turned on when attempting this.
I have tried Winsock and updating my network drivers to no success. I do believe my PC is the problem though, as everything had been working properly for several weeks before.
Any advice or software/drivers to look for is greatly appreciated.

I have a Gateway desktop, a Toshiba laptop and a Netgear router. I use the Toshiba wireless when it does connect. This is the third time this has happened ,that is I'm unable to connect to the internet. The first two times Windows repaired the connection, this time no such luck. It always says the same, Windows can't finish repairing the connection on account invalid IP address. When I go to the connectivity doctor on my Toshiba it says to turn on the connectivity switch, which is already on. Also my son brought his laptop over and it connected right away to the internet. Does someone have a idea on what is wrong or how I might fix it.
it could be the hardware settings issue. posting the result of ipconfig here may help.
I am unable to connect to the internet on my desktop pc running Windows 7 64bit home premium.
I have tried unplugging and re-plugging the modem, router, and the switch. Plugging the computer directly into the router with two different cables. Installing the motherboard drivers (I was pretty sure they were up to date, but wanted to try anyhow). And restoring the computer to a date it was working.
There are two other computers on the network along with a Xbox 360, PS3, and various other wifi devices that work just fine.
I have Googled around a bit for this, but the couple things I tried didn't work and I don't really understand everything that was being said so I figured I would try asking myself.
Try clicking on the internet controller (bottom right of screen just next to the date and time), open network and sharing center, click on "set up a new connection or network, and follow the guide. Tell me how that goes. Also, you could try hooking up the computer strait to the modem should what I am telling you does not work.

My problem started after cleaning out software. I have a 2wire from AT&T still have online connection on ps3 but computer does have a ip address in command (CMD). I have talked to AT&T Tech advise possible missing software.
I have messages like-
DNS NOT reachable
Failed error 0x80070422
Windows not install properly
Windows firewall setting can not be displayed the associated service is not running
I can not locate installation or backup disk just relocated
What software were you uninstalling? It definitely sounds like you uninstalled an important application needed for Windows to run properly.
Have you tried a system restore?
Also, without knowing what software you uninstalled - it will be very hard for us to solve this problem.
A friend of mine has asked me to look at his ancient Dell desktop that is running XP home as it has stopped accessing the internet completely. I booted into Safe Mode and managed to use IE to connect ok there, which made me think that it might be a virus. From Safe Mode, I installed Malwarebytes, updated it, and ran a full scan from safe mode where is found a number of tracking cookies, but also some trojans which I removed. I then ran a full systm scan of his Norton virus checker which did not find anything. I booted into normal mode only to find the problem still existed.
I've dropped into the command line and issued Ping to www.bbc.co.uk which works fine. ipconfig shows the ethernet adapter only with a valid ip address, subnet mask and default gateway. I've not used XP in a long time, but I was kind of expecting to see a little more there.

I believe the problem is Norton Internet Security here since you don't have this problem in Windows safe mode.
Please uninstall Norton Internet Security from Software > add & remove programs. Reboot afterwards.
Let me know if that solved your issue.
If that solved the problem, I suggest you install another Antivirus/Firewall. See in my signature below for the ones I recommend.
Extra note, I see your sunjava is way outdated. I strongly suggest you update asap: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Im having trouble connecting to the internet on PC. When I try to start up Firefox (or any other internet accessing program on my computer) I get a message saying the server cannot be found, etc etc. I have tried restarting my computer, re-connecting the connection, repairing the connecting. All my firewalls are turned off, I even removed one of them. This has happened before but normally I can clean spyware off and it runs just fine. I've already run everything on my computer to clean of spyware, virus's, vundo, and a bunch of other things that I got from the security portion of this site. I've also checked back a few pages of posts and done searches, but it is to no avail.
If any one has any ideas as to what could be the problem, Im willing to try almost anything. oh, and im connecting to the internet from the same ethernet cord, from the same connection, but its on my mac. Which, imo, rules out the problem being something with either of those.
You said "Same ethernet cord, same connection". And what's on the other end of that ethernet cord? How do you connect to your ISP?
You connected directly from computer to (cable or dsl) modem? If you have a router or something in between remove it. And, btw, are you using a cable or dsl provider. Have you called them as well see if it's their problem?
Have you power cycled the modem?
Is the NIC on your mac configured to match the parameters required by your ISP? e.g. DHCP
Is an IP address getting assigned to the computer? or are there connection problems even before that step is completed?
Hope someone can help. A friend of mine has a laptop & a desktop computer. Both OS XP, and both conneted to same router & surge protecter. The reason why I'm explaining this is because they were both on when we had a dreadful storm. Now the desktop works fine & is able to connect to the internet no problem. As for the laptop, all things appear to be working without any problems, except the ability to connect to the internet. We have contacted the isp, they came out and said it had nothing to do with anything at their end (we already had figured that one out because of the desktop). During his check though he tried to run the msconfig to see what programs were running and he couldn't get it to open. I've disconnected it from the router, and connected it direct, but no go with the internet. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? As I say, all programs, in every sence of the word the laptop appears to be working just fine. Problem stands, it will not connect to the internet.
Please help? With thanks,
Open a DOS window and type:
IPCONFIG /ALL >C:RESULT.TXT
Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
I have several computers online with both ethernet and wireless adapters. My main computer can't connect to the Internet today. I had it hooked via a cable to the router, took that off and hooked up the wireless USB adapter and still no luck. The Netgear info says it is hooked up and there is a signal, but I can't get email or anything in my browser.
I have rebooted several times. This happens whether or not I have it hooked via the Ethernet cable or wireless. My other computers (I have both Ethernet and wireless) are able to connect and I can view pages in my browser.
Any ideas where to start? What a way to start off a Monday.

Now vista unable to connect to internet via LAN.
Bright House staff examined conection and found no problems with LAN and modem.
Answers by Acer support staff advised to install LAN Marvin 10.12.8.3 driver x32 for windows vista home basic. This was done using another computer and portable memory, restarted computer, but still unable to connect.
Second Answers by Acer support staff advised to install same driver but x64. This advise came as time ran out.
I did install the x64 driver, restarted, still unable to connect. Network and Sharing Center shows not connected.
Noticed that before installing the x64 driver, in device manager, in other decives, ethernet controller and mass storage controller had !. When installed the LAN Marvin 10.12.8.3 x64 the ethernet controller now has a downward arrow, but the mass storage still has !.
Unable to connect to the internet
I would rate my computer savvy at Beginner/Intermediate, so I apologize if some info below is irrelevant. I saw similar posts, but nothing exactly the same or with a solution I understood.
This issue started two days ago. I do not have internet access and when I check the network, it will say ?limited? under the name of the wireless network. There was a power outage in our area over the weekend [which occurred while an update was being done by Windows but the system worked fine for about 2 days after that]. I have not had issues with internet connectivity other than the power outage in months [generally fixed by resetting the modem]. 3 days ago I upgraded from Avast to Avast Premier and have turned off the Windows Defender Firewall that was on my system. I do not know if Windows performed an update 3 days ago.
The following is from speaking to Comcast Tech Support [I got a combo Modem/Router from them yesterday]:
A reset of the TCP/IP
Released/Renewed the IP address
He made the comment that ?It?s ignoring the DHCP server?
And he feels that this is likely a Windows 10 issue and not a hardware one.
