I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is it possible to buy an economical DVD drive for Windows XP that's on the hardware compatibility list and/or will function correctly under Windows XP without the need for 3rd party software, and if so, where can I find such a drive? Nothing I've found for sale is on the HCL. I'd like a drive that's writeable but can live without it. My main concerns are simplicity and reliability.

I would think that any of the DVDs will work. Also I normally use the use the software that comes with the drive, not the CD / DVD writer provided in XP.

I'm looking at buying one of these to replace my old Samsung one that has given up on me recently. Perusing around various sites I have been unable to find many reviews or recommendations as to the best one to buy. All I find is info on DVD-Writers mainly.

I know this is a fairly inexpensive upgrade and performance probably doesnt differ that much between most drives, but could you please make some recommendations to any particular drive so I know that my money will go towards something that is of decent quality?

Money is not really an issue, but I dont want a DVD Writer. Also I would prefer Tray rather than Slot Loading.

Thanks, hope you can help some

Hi, on hindsight I should have asked this question at this forum first. But I was tired from doing all the researching and bit on an old x230 convertible laptop off ebay that supposedly has core i7 3520M, 4gb of ram, and 160gb ssd. It has been upgraded to windows 10. It has not arrived yet. At around $200, it seemed to me like a steal for the specs. I do think that these specs were user-upgraded and not factory-made so I cannot speak for the quality.I read rave reviews about this device, however, most were from several years ago. I never owed a device with this specs or a touchscreen laptop for that matter so I do not really know what to expect.I guess I will start out to see if anyone still second this as a solid convertible laptop in today's standard. Does windows 10 run well on it? Seem like a lot of people run into problems when upgrading to windows 10? Is there anything special about the touchscreen or is it just obsolete technology nowadays? I mean the most resource intensive thing I will do on this laptop is just playing some online flash games so I think it is way less than what it is capable of. I was just looking for a laptop that is upgradable and can stay relevant for a long time so did I make the right call? Any feedbacks are appreciated!

Hi Guys,
My hard drive has gone kapoot, so I need a new one.
Sorry if my questions are silly, but I dont know anything about the inside of the computer, But I want to do this job myself for two reasons, 1) to save me the small fortune the computer shop charges me, and 2) because I want to slowly learn what going on behind thoes white tin walls.

Ok, The hard drive I have now is a Hitachi Deskstar. ATA/IDE 7200rpm.
I have been looking on ebay and already im confused, There are three types from what I can see, IDE, SATA and SCSI, what is the difference between these, and seeing as mine has ATA on it, must I buy a ATA type???

I was looking at this one on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/400GB-HITACHI-DESKSTAR-7200_W0QQitemZ260006736753QQihZ016QQcategoryZ64463QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem but it has SATA on it, does that mean its not compatible with my computer??

Also, when I find the right H/D is it as easy as plugging it in and installing my O/S on it?

Thanks for any help people, Cheers, Ryan.

A:Buying a new hard drive.

not knowing what you have in the rest of the computer, if the drive you are replacing is a normal IDE drive that is what I would relace it with. Your system may not have SATA controllers.

I currently have a 160 GB HD for my OS and Docs. I am going to get a 500 GB HD and replace it. I need to keep the price under $100 so a SSD is out of the question. It was in the computer when I purchased it so I do not have a manual. How can I find out the specs? Thanks,

A:Buying New Hard Drive

Speed it rotates (5400, or 7200)

Cache (the bigger the better)

IDE, or EIDE (if internal), ATA, or sata.

If external USB 2 or 3, or firewire.

I would also check out what their warranty is.

In the case of not burning DVDs, your best mate will be LiteOn (who recently merged its DVD-rom division with JVC).
Any model with a type-number of 163 or higher is a great choice. Look for their drives with Smart-X and ABS technology.

Just installed a PogoPlug and want to buy a hard drive to attach to it.
Here are some questions:

1. desktop drives have to be plugged in and portable drives generally run off of USB. I hate cables but am guessing that portables might sacrifice other benefits compared to a desktop drive. What would those be?

2. can anyone give a quick-phrase summary comparing the major brands?

3. Are there particular features or specifications that are more important because I'm accessing the drive via WiFi and through the PogoPlug?

4. Any other advice is welcomed!

A:buying external drive for NAS

1. The models that I see, only support external HDD's. So internal drives are irrelevant. However, most external drives use AC power, not USB power. And when shopping for a drive, only get a drive that uses AC power.

2. I've not had any issues with any of the major brands.

3. none

4. none

Hi everyone,

Anyway I have posted this because i was wondering how would I transfer my files and settings from my current hard drive over to my new hard drive when i get it.

Thanks for anny help and tips.

A:Buying A New Hard Drive

Are you moving from one boot drive to another boot drive?

Do you want to simply transfer your Windows system and all of your files to the new drive?

If so, you can do that by "cloning" with an application such as Acronis.

Or you can use the "imaging" capability found in Acronis, Macrium Reflect, or Paragon.

Your third choice is to reinstall Windows on the new drive.

Imaging and cloning are not foolproof, so be prepared to reinstall if you have to--back up your data.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, is the best I could think off.

My sister has a laptop in which the HD has failed. So she needs a new one.

I had a laptop a few years back, in which it broke, so I thought I would give the hard drive to her, but it does not fit to it. So I guess there are different sizes of HDs.

I would like to know what are my options to purchasing a new HD, or am I stuck having to buy the exactly same model?

Here are what I found about the drive the failed:

Toshiba MK1032GSX HDD2D30
100 GB 5400 rpm
16 MB of cache, a 12 ms access time, and a 12 ms seek time
SATA150 2.5"

Looking at the back of the laptop, this is the information I see that might help:

Toshiba Satellite U205-S5034
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Any other info, you might think I can provide for assistence let me know.

Hello people of the Lenovo forums. A friend of mine just gave me his Lenovo x230t, it looks like he tried formating it and handing it over to me but he didn't install all the drivers or what not. The laptop itself is from France (french keyboard) and I think when he installed the windows it was in french as well, I changed the setting and made it so everything is in english but when I installed the Lenovo System Update app it installed it in french and I cannot change it, same goes for Realtek. I went through this websites find and recommed me stuff to install, and it did install all the intel drivers and a bios update also I myself installed the driver that activates the tablet keys (screen rotate, task manager). My question is should I just clean install all over again? I got the windows key here so should I just reinstall the whole PC? its new so I got nothing important on it. If so, how should I go about it? I don't have the windows disk or any other driver disk. Another issue is that I cannot use my fingers on the touch screen, it only works with the stylus. I've seen people online scrolling through web pages and PDF using their fingers in touch, also using some other cool functions like opening all the curret apps in a scroll by pressing 4 fingers against the screen. Do I need to install a certain driver to do it? if so where? Sorry for writing so much and thank you for taking the time and reading it.I apologize if I broke an... A:Some help with an x230t windows 10

Hello and welcome,

I'd be inclined to do a clean install, followed by System Update.  Since Win 10 has already been activated on that machine you likely won't need the key.

You can download Win 10 direct from Microsoft.  I haven't looked at the MS tool lately and don't know if the download varies by version (Home, Pro, ...) but if it does pick the one that matches your key.

Im having trouble deciding what to buy.

First off, i don't do that many updates PC wise, so this should be able to last me awhile (the hard drive)
Second, i need around 500gb space, anything higher would probably be a waste.
Third, I am using this computer for searching the web, Microsoft doc/excel/those kinds of thing, some steam games.

So what kind of hard drive should i get? Green? Those 7200 ones? What type of cache?
My budget is a maximum of around 100$ (Although i would prefer to buy one between 50-80$)

Your input is greatly appreciated, thanks alot!

Edit: All of the 500gb 7200 RPM drives i see are 16 MB cache, is 16 MB cache bad? How much worse is it then 32 MB or 64 MB cache.

A:Buying New Internal Hard Drive

I'd get a 7200 RPM drive if Windows will be on it, as I assume it will be in your case.

Samsung, Western Digital, and Seagate all make decent 7200 RPM drives. They will all likely have 32 MB or 64 MB of cache. It's not a big deal---not as important as the overall speed of the drive.

Nothing wrong with green drives, but they are typically 5400 rpm and somewhat slower. That might not bother you? Probably wouldn't save you much at the 500 or 750 GB size.

Personally, I'd go with either Samsung or Western Digital, but the fact is you can have bad luck with any brand, so consider things like cost and the seller's return policy if you have problems.

I assume you have a relatively modern PC with SATA connectors. If that isn't true, you would need to buy the older technology and those drives might be getting hard to find.

A:Please help me decide if the hard drive im buying is okay.

Really, we need to know the model you are looking to buy to see what video chip it has. Without a dedicated video card you may struggle to play those games you want to play.  On the hard drives, the M.2 NVME is the newest thing and is lightning fast but you might find 256 gigs too small. So there are options to also have a regular hard drive for storage. I would stay away from options with a 128 gig drive as that is too small for most people. Windows is on the smaller drive and the bigger one is used for storage so in my experience most people can't run Windows within less than 256 gigs these days..  The extra $40 for the screen is because it has an infrared webcam instead of just a normal webcam which as I understand it makes it possible to do 3D imaging. IR (infrared) can sense how far away objects are. That is why it is $40 more. The screens are the same, the cameras are the difference.  Bluetooth means what it seems to mean. You can connect your phone or a pair of wireless headphones.  Post back if you have more questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello Iíve got some questions! I've had my CDRW burner ever since I got my computer in 1999. Yeah, I still have it and I am still using. It's still great! It used to have Windows 98, but now it currently has Windows XP. Back when my computer had Win 98 and Adaptec 3.5c for my CDRW burner, the burner worked fine. But after wiping my computer clean and installing Win XP I found out that Windows XP no longer supported the Adaptec software. So I bought Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 because I guess that's what the Adaptec company changed into. So I installed Roxio thinking that my CDRW burner would run on that instead. Now my CD burner doesn't work much at all. I'm sick and tired of it. It works when it feels like it, but most of the time it fails and I waste CD after CD or data on my CDís mysteriously disappears. Windows detects it as being unstable. I figured I should probably get a new one because Iím thinking that the one I have right now is very old and is too outdated to be supported by Roxio. Am I right/wrong?

Could somebody suggest what should I buy when I go out tomorrow? I want an internal CDRW. I don't need a combo DVD one because my computer probably couldn't handle it and because I don't really need DVD. I don't need the fastest one; I just want that is good quality and one that works. Is the panel I will buy will directly replace the one that is there, or is there a "glass" in front that I should replace at the same time, or is it the touchscreen ?I imagine there is a protective glass in front because there is the "lenovo" sign showed for instance and it's not present on the panel, and it seems to be same part. To said it other way (sorry for my english), when I put my finger on the screen, do I touch directly the panel (that will be replaced) or is there any sort of covering glass in front? 2) I think some screen problem like this can be due to a faulty cable, but from what I read the problem would be on whole screen, not only on a line like it is now. Can anyone confirm this ? 3) If indeed it's the panel that is defective, in this kind of situation is it possible to "fix" the panel, like I don't know, putting something to "push" on the false contact so the contact stays ?  4) My panel is LP125WH2-SLB3. I'll replace it with LP125WH2-SLT2. Seems the same to me. Or any other model to recommend that would be still IPS (I found lot of "c... Read more

Hey guys. It's me again. And I can't find a solution to this.Lately I've got USB 3.0 issues. In Device Manager it shows 2 drivers and devices as "Unknown USB Device (Link in Compliance Mode)". I don't know why it came up but this is driving me crazy. I've got toast notifications from this. My USB 3.0 flash disk won't always connect to laptop. And when it will connect, it takes a while before it does. But in Win7 all worked perfectly and I really don't know a solution to this.I tried reinstalling driver, updating. But it's working for a while. After that it's still showing an error. And there's no USB 3.0 drivers from Lenovo for Win10. Has anyone encountered that kind of problem in their ThinkPads? Or anywhere?

Hi everyone,

My hard disk has been ticking, clicking and doing all kinds of weird sounds lately (including weird loud white noise sounds), explorer.exe keeps freezing and some programs take ages to open, so I'm thinking about buying a new hard drive.

I wanna buy this one and I would like to know first of all if it's a good choice for me, considering I have now a 320gb 5200rpm and it's worked fine for what I do with my computer, and second I would like to know if it's gonna fit on my computer.

What do you need to know in order to tell me that ?

Thanks in advance

Hello,
As my Zip 100 isn't really upto the task and hasn't been for some years!!
I need a source to backup my work to, as I am starting a business and need to take care. My MSI MEGA PC is doing fine and has been very reliable (touch wood)
I'm running windows XP I have about a 40gb HD of which only half is full, including games etc. So as you can see I dont need anything fancy and dont want to spend much. I just want the facility to recover all of my documents, emails, favourites, pdfs, etc.
I'm not sure what the best solution is, so am asking if anyone has any guidance??

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a external USB hard drive and am looking for something pocket sized. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

Worth mentioning I am based in England (seeing this is a worldwide community and am referred to shops who are based abroad )

Thanks

Hi. I need a new hard drive and was wondering what people thought about this particular Hard Drive and if it is worth buying? Thanks. With the rebates this Drive will end up only costing me 29 bux.

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L25-S1216 I bought new in early 2006. (Intel Celeron M Processor 380 1.6 Ghz, 1MB L2, 400 MHz FSB, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Chipset.) I have not been able to boot into Windows XP for 3 years using the factory TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD and the Fully Recover procedure on the back of the DVD package. I have been using Linux for the past 3 years. Ubuntu SMART test disk utility tells me I have 20 bad hard drive sectors.

I have concluded I should buy a new hard drive, since mine has 20 bad sectors. My current hard drive is ATA-6, so I know I need a PATA compatible hard drive. I'd like to increase to maybe 60 GB from the current 40 GB. I'd also like to go with a solid state drive, but there don't appear to be many PATA compatible solid state drives.

And I don't want to get too complicated or expensive; I want to stay with my current Windows XP. Not sure if a SATA PATA interface adapter would work to allow me to use a SATA solid state hard drive or not. I know (from reading knowledge base posts) there is also the potential problem of the older BIOSs not recognizing the newer Advanced Drive Format drives.

QUESTION: Does anybody have any advice about buying a hard drive that would work for me? How can I be reasonably sure a hard drive I buy is compatible with my computer?

Thank you,

Bob
