Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Q: Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,

Hello! As i said in the topic, i'm missing the "show/hide hidden files" checkbox in folder settings. Most people suggest editing the registry key for it (at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advan ced\Folder\Hidden] ), but i don't have "Hidden" in the "Folder" directory of my registry. If you have any ideas how to fix this without reinstalling windows, it'd help a lot. Thanks in advance guys, i see that you are doing a very good job here.P.S. Found a fix after all (download http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/wp-conte...dersettings.reg , add to registry and then follow directions from any forum). Thanks anyways :)

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks

There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

Hi
I'm helping a friend who had a malware infection, which has now apparently been eradicated. Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. I don't know if the problems it still has are a result of the malware, or if they were preexisting on my friend's computer. But I suspect they were used by the malware to protect itself.

*The taskbar won't unlock, even temporarily (in contrast to the folder properties issue mentioned below).
*I can't show hidden files/extensions, even temporarily.
*Folder properties can't be altered permanently, e.g. the user documents folder is always displayed as "Pictures and Videos" type instead of "All Items" ; can't set to use Windows Classic folders, show full path in Title Bar, etc. These items CAN be altered temporarily, but the previous settings always revert on rebooting.)
*Context menu items such as new folder, new text document are not present.
*Deleted files do not show up in the recycle bin.
*No matter which browser (FF or MSIE) is set as default, when the default browser is reopened it always states to this effect: "This is not the default browser. Would you like to make it the default browser?"

These did not return to normal after doing a system restore to 3 weeks before the time the malware became apparent.
The system restore was done before eliminating the malware. The following were tried afterwards:
I ran Unhide (from Bleepingcomputer) several times; no effect.
I ran System File Checker several times; ... Read more

Hello all!

I'm having this weird problem in XP. I backed up a 2gb thumbdrive and zipped it up by winrar. The contents were a total of 1.40gb. When I view the zipped files through any compression program (winrar, 7zip, etc.), I can see the files and folders inside. But the weird part is, when I extract them, I can only see a few files and 1 folder available (I have multiple folders in the archive). Visibly, it showed only 200mb worth of files extracted. But when I right-click the folder in which I extracted the files to, it showed 1.40gb. I then thought files were hidden. When I clicked to show hidden files, still nothing. To make sure the "show hidden files" was working, I checked c:\windows folder and happened to see hidden files, while the folder with the extracted files still showed nothing. I did a virus scan and spyware scan on that specific folder. Nothing was found. But still, invisible files. How do I solve this?

I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing. I had this problem for months already.

The only way that I know of would be to have Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted), and to check the Hide protected operating system files box. Of course, all hidden protected OS files will hidden as well. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu

Hello All,

I would like to remove the 30 or so files that are now showing on my desktop since selecting to "Show Hidden files"

They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue

What are they/how are they created?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007

Thanks!

A:What are ~$ files that appear on desktop when hidden files show

As far as I'm aware they are desktop .ini files that are written to the desktop whenever you make a change to the file so that the file/folder remembers the change.

If you delete the .ini file it will return to its default settings.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001060.htm

Is there any particular reason why you want to show hidden files? Obviously, they are hidden for a good reason.

Try this workaround if you insist on showing hidden files:

Enable Show hidden files, folders and drives but make sure that Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) is checked.

This will keep the desktop.ini hidden while showing other hidden files.

All of the files appear to be gone. All of the program files and documents that should be in my documents appear empty. Thanksfully I could see GMER scanning all of these missing files so it looks like they are just hidden. I am not taking any action to recover these as I know how that can cause other virus issues so I am just waiting for help.

The computer seems to be working OK in that I have internet access and the programs that show up in the upper left of the start menu can be launched (IE, Outlook, and a Bridge Game that I play) but all of the other 'All Programs' appear empty.

In Appearance Files View, clearing the 2 buttons to reveal hidden files does not allow access to, for instance, C documents and settings, which has a padlock next to it, and others.

I had reinstalled the OS from within the machine and uninstalled any junk such as games etc. Have Avast free, super antispyware, Spybot, all of which find no threat Have run Kasperski one-time virus removal tool and; no threat. Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Kaspersky seemed to have trouble getting past; PE_Patch.Juba, and Googling suggests there may be something hidden in there.

This machine runs well enough but Firefox not responding, and slowness on internet activity are symptoms.

Do I have a virus?

A:Show hidden files that remain hidden

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

Hi again Notion
There's a difference between hidden files and system files. To view hidden files, you need to check Show hidden files, folders and drives in the Folder Options. From there, if you want to see the system files you need to unchecked Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Then you'll see every files and folders on your system.

So, as what the topic title says, I can't show/view hidden files. I tried doing the "Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show hidden files and folders", and still, it didn't work. Well, it partially did, but I could only see one folder showing up when in fact there are plenty of folders hidden. Please help me. I'm not really good at these things, so please describe what I'll do in layman's terms. Thanks again.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Hi there,
I've got a fresh install of windows 8, with bitdefender loaded just after. I then transferred saved files from another hdd, which wasn't connected during install, to the windows 8 hdd. I now can't access hidden files. Whenever I tick the show hidden files box it resets? I tested by hiding a file which no longer appears no matter what I do...I've tried the registry trick of show files = 1.
I've run bitdefender - clean
Malware bytes crashes on scan
malwarebytes antiroot kit comes up clean

I'm at a loss as to where to go to now?
Thanks for any help

I have this strange thing happening. I'm using Windows XP. In Windows Explorer, in the Tools, Folder Options dialog box, when I select "Show hidden files and folders", then click Apply and OK, the hidden files and folders are not shown. When I go back into the dialog box, the option is not selected anymore. Instead it reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".I quickly searched online and people are saying its a virus. I scanned the PC with Avast Antivirus, Eset Online, Trend Micro Housecall Online, Defender, AVG Anti Virus, Spybot, Ad-aware, Super Antispyware, Rougeremover, Panda Online, SDFix., Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Deckard's System Scanner. Besides tracking cookies, Avast was the only scan to find something. I used the "Delete" option when I was asked what to do. After the scans, the problem still occurs.I posted the Avast and Hijack this log below. Hope you can hlep. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine. Thanks and again sorry for the delay. Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.alternate download siteDSS will do the following:Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.Automatically run HijackThis. I have two main issues.

I get a dos command box that opens up periodically and closes itself, and I can't show hidden folders/files.

The facts are these:
1. I have full admin permissions
2. When I try to show hidden files/folders and uncheck "hide system files and folders" and click ok or apply, nothing happens. When I go back to the folders options again, they are both back to the where they were.
3. When I try to run DSS, it crashes right after displaying cleaning up files.
4. I have uninstalled the ServU program (FTP program).

HiI wasn't sure whether this was a general Windows problem, or a possible malware. I'm guessing the latter:I am a student at University, and about two days ago when logging onto a PC in the labs, I noticed a folder called 'desktop.exe' on the desktop (a folder, not an executable). I didn't bother with it, except to notice that it looked odd, and I plugged in my flash drive. Windows recognized and labeled it as the H drive. I had My Computer open and was browsing through my files, when I noticed a folder was generated in the root directory of my flash drive, called "H.exe". Unfortunately I was in too much of a rush to consider it, and the folder disappeared (it was probably set to 'hidden').I immediately thought my flash was infected with someone's homemade malware, but I had no choice other than to plug it into my laptop at home to do some work. I had almost forgotten about the problem, until I tried viewing hidden files and folders and found the "Show hidden files and folders" option remained unchecked no matter how many times I repeated its selection. Incidentally, on reading your tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/, I found that "Hide protected operating system files" also does not remain unchecked when I select it.I have no problem other than the irritation of not being able to see my hidden files/folders. I have not noticed any folder called "C.exe" or such like on my laptop, thoug... Read more

A:Show Hidden Files And Folders?

Mod edit: New topic has been merged with the original. Please stick to the original topic--do not start a new topic after five days, rather just post a link to the one that is pending. PKI have reason to believe this is a malware problem, not a general Windows problem.I think I picked something up from my flash drive while at University. My hidden files and folders wont show when I tick the appropriate box (in folder options), and when I open my hard drives in My Computer, it opens them in a new window (which is odd) and tells me that "IEXPLORER.exe is attempting to access the internet".I also cannot 'view operating and system files' because the box remains unchecked. Please check out my log file below. Hello Will, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can check the Hide protected operating system files box to hide those type of files, and leave Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted) to see only the hidden system files.
