Admin account lost admin privileges!

Q: Admin account lost admin privileges!

I installed a few programs last night and I lost all my admin privileges.

I'm using an account that has admin rights, and yet these happened:
- run button in the start menu has disappeared.
- turn off button has also disappeared; I can only log off
- I cannot run the task manager when I press ctrl-alt-del
- some sys tray applications stopped being started up with the windows (skype, msn messenger, icq, adobe lightroom, daemontools)
- when I load Adobe Photoshop CS2, I get this message that says "You are not allowed to continue because your account does not have administrator privileges".
- I'm sure there're more things waiting to be discovered.

But the thing is, my account has admin status!

I've run adaware to clear out all spyware already. I'm attaching a HijackThis log; can anyone help see what's wrong?

Preferred Solution: Admin account lost admin privileges!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

I just made a non admin user account on my Dell Inspiron (windows xp) laptop. When I went online to sign in under my account (admin) it is no longer there. My name (Penne) is there (and so is my daughters). I click on my name, put my password in and it takes me to the desktop for my daughter and ALL my stuff is gone. PLEASE HELP!!!
I have googled this and the only thing I am seeing is that you need to sign in under an Admin user account to fix this and get my stuff back. THere is NO admin user account so how can I get it all back? I did the F8 and went to restore to previous point and that didnt work. I know there is a way to go to the restore calendar and find a day that her user account was not on there (like last week) so this might work, but I dont know how to find this.
PLEASE help as all of my EVERYTHING is on my user account and I am lost without it all (have a retreat this weekend and I need all of my sheet music and my songs)
Thanks so much,
PENNE

Hi

I seem to have lost admin rights/privileges on my account, even though it says i am an admin. I can't use windows update because of the following message. UAC is off.

I created another account and swapped admin privileges to that, and everything was ok, but as soon as i swap the privileges back to my original account, i get various 'this action requires admin rights' etc etc

I'm confused. I don't want to keep logging into another admin account just so i can use windows update.

I've tried this, but it said it couldn't fix all the problems. What can i try next folks?

Cheers

A:Lost Admin Privileges

Just set up a new account. Give yourself privileges for the software in the first account. Make that the new account. The first account is corrupt

You can try this, too.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Nice work Microsoft! I just turned on my computer to find that my admin rights have been stripped from my user account. It's weird, I'm the only user of this computer and its a personal laptop.- Running Windows Vista on a 32bit HP DV5 Laptop- I can't access Task Manager from Ctrl+Alt+Del- Cannot enter Run -> Regedit as it returns a "Regediting has been disabled by your Administrator"Also there's this weird message below my Run command box:Any help?PS: UAC was turned off ages ago and similar problems went away. It's still turned off - no idea what's going on

Looks like a malware attack, this will Re-enable (http://www.raymond.cc/forum/general-forum/12672-re-enable-project-ideas-and-suggestions.html) but you need to AV scan to get rid of it.http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Hi all

So the situation is this, I had to setup an existing PC in the office for a new starter and decided to be lazy and simply change the user account name (I know, that was a schoolboy error!). Since doing this, the computer allows me to login fine with the new username/password but keeps asking for the Admin login details whenever I try to make system changes, update software, etc. The user account I changed was the admin account so not sure why this is happening. I've tried using every username/password that has ever been assigned to that PC, but nothing works! Is there any workaround to get Admin privileges back so I can fix this?

FYI - The PC is a member of our work domain, so figure this has further complicated things!?

Really hoping this isn't going to need a full re-installation of windows, fingers crossed someone out there can give me some good news

Thanks in advance

A:Lost Admin Privileges

The prompt for Admin during installs is actually a good thing (that is the UAC and you REALLY want it to prompt) BUT you can almost always use any log in the Administrators Group

use CP->User Accounts
add user
set type = Admin
*must* add password to it

save and close

runas /user:$whatever$you$just$created cmd
give that password

it will then create the %profile% for that new user

From then on, you can reply with $whatever$you$just$created and its password

Is it possible to give admin privileges to a particular command or a set of commands (say for example i wanted to set the IP address of the machine from the limited user) from the admin login.

thanks in advance,

Im sure if u assign the laptop an IP address another account would use that.
Unsure and not willing to test it, but you could try!
Aslong as you know the admin stuff...we cant help with passwords :)

i dont think you can change the admin/limited rights..if they need to install programs..i would set as admin, what damage could they do :P lol

I've suddenly been denied "permission" or access privileges to install (or even update) programs on my computer. I have tried going back to several different restore points but none of them have helped. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 on this computer and only one "user" account which is, of course, an Administrator account. The "permissions" are check with FULL CONTROL with all boxes checked.

I would greatly appreciate all the help I can get because I've tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem without success. Actually, I'm afraid I just keep making matters even worse because now my computer runs awfully slow and programs stall or just shut down suddenly. I was going to just give up and re-install windows, hoping that would correct my problems but a friend told me to try seeing if anyone here could help me out first. Thanks in advance for your help, GJ

I have an admin acct that doesn't seem to have privileges. One issue is that I'm unable to create a user acct (specified acct name not valid, cannot contain the following characters: |[]”:;|<>+=,?*)
The new user name contains no such characters.

So I enabled the hidden admin acct, which seems to have privileges, but gets the same error when trying to create a new acct.

various virus, malware and rootkit detection utilities don't find anything. Outside of the admin issues and account creation, the system runs fine.

This system is a Dell XPS 410, upgraded to win 7 Pro x64 SP1 from XP (before I obtained it).

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks!

A:Admin has no privileges, cannot create user account

I'm checking into profile issues...System Properties\Advanced|User Profile settings shows the users in the below image.

All seems well except for the Account Unknown. I guess #1 is the hidden admin account, #'s 2 & 3 are the named user accts.

There was an account named updatususer. Research shows that this is an nvidea update service account. I removed it from the admin account (still can't create a new user).

in a cmd window, 'net user' returns only users #2 & #3. User #3 is the local admin account without privileges.

Any ideas as to what the Account Unknown user could be (if it's even pertinent to the issue)? I thought it might be the guest account, but it's not turned on.

Try adding "Take Ownership" to the Shell:

Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8

See if you can elevate your Privileges with that. It may be the permissions for the whole folder where you have these files stored.

Frustrated with admin rights - Please help me.

Just purchased new PC - HP Pavilion desktop and upgraded to Windows 10 during installation. I've downloaded Google Chrome as my default search engine with no issues. I've attempted several times to download Google Earth. Download fails: "Google Earth needs administrator privileges to install."

I am the only user on this PC and User Account type indicates that I'm the "Administrator".

Why won't Google Earth install?

A:Google Earth won't install - admin privileges required (I am admin)

Hello and welcome!

Sometimes you have to run the installation file and deliberately make it "Run as Administrator" by right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting this option. Not sure if this is the case with Google Earth but worth a try.

I'm a new convert to win7 from XP so forgive the newbie questions I have a program installed that came with my SSD hard drive by Samsung and every time I start windows I get a pop up box saying "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" Samsung Magician Application I click yes.

How do I make it stop notifying me on this? Under settings I lowered the bar to the 2nd notch up on the scale of "always" to "never". I can't eliminate notifications on a per application basis? I don't want to lower it to "never" because then I'll never be notified of something I might need to know.

Also... most times when I try to drag a file into another folder I get a pop up saying I need Administrator privileges to do this and I click "continue" but it does it anyway. When I installed windows I think I set myself as Administrator so I don't understand why it keeps telling me this but still performs the action.

I'm going to let a technician have my Windows 7 64bit PC in order to do clone the HDD to a SSD and then replace the HDD with the SSD. I think the techn wants an admin level account. I am concerned that (s)he not gain access to confidential files etc that would be available to me were I logged in. Is there a way to let the tech have admin access (s)he wants w/o having to be concerned about the privacy of the info on it? Can you create an admin level account which deprives its user from gaining access to files on a certain directory under c:\users

A:granting another user access to an account with 'admin' privileges

Acerman why don't you clone the drive yourself it is really not that hard with Macrium Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

See my pic it shows the process but remember the drive you clone to has to be as large or larger than the drive you are cloning from.

There is a way of dragging and dropping the partitions into a smaller drive but it is not reliable enough for me.

The alternative is to image your drive slip a new one in - install the system using this
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and then use the image to get back your data. As you seem to be concerned that you have data that you do not want to be copied or whatever. That is so easy if you know how and I can and I am not a techie so the shop bloke would be more than capable of doing that.

Hi all

I hope somebody can perhaps rescue me,

I have had win8 for approx 1 year and just upgraded to win8.1 last week.

I installed bitdefender total security at the same time and everything was fine for a few days until one morning I woke up my Laptop to find I couldnt open a software program. Further investigation has found that I can not alter anything on my machine.

I have only the one user account which has my name, email, Administrator and password protected showing.

I can use my laptop still but have no admin rights at all.

When i try to open command prompt (admin) it takes a few minutes to come back with an error saying cannot access specified path, file folder etc...

I am pulling my hair out as i cant even restore my system back to factory settings.

How can I restore my factory settings from this point??

Hi. I am working on restoring a computer. It is running Windows XP home SP2 with all updates installed now. Previously, it was still a basic Windows XP Home SP1 install with no updates installed.

The computer had many virus and malware on it that I have removed. Most of the hard drive is compressed. It had lost access to regedit, but I restored that. I removed most of the spyware and malware and infected files. I ran very many antivirus programs and removers that are linked in this forum. Disk cleanup was done.

It seems that the virus activites have stopped but I still can't control certain things. Problems are that I can't view properties on my computer, can't open any control panel modules, desktop display settings won't open, can't open user accounts and settings, and I am logged in with administrator privileges. The error I get is "Restrictions - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in efect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I get the error twice for each request.

The administrator account is still active. I plan on removing that. There is/was more but I can't think of anything right now.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Windows 7 client on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain (and I am the Administrator of the Domain). The client that I am using is refusing to let me add addition User Accounts to the Administrator group (despite the fact that I am logged on as the Domain Administrator).

Furthermore if I attempt to log onto the client computer as the local Administrator by specifying the computer name rather than the Domain name at logon I see the following -

Finally if I then follow, these http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...idden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/
instructions to enable the hidden administrator account I am met with the following message -

I have considered an offline password reset disk, however the local ('hidden') Administrator account is disabled! This feels like a catch 22, can anybody offer any suggestions on how to restore true Administrative access?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I created an administrator account for MSConway and changed my original account (pmconway) to user. Now when I log in to MSConway I get "The user name or password is corrupted." At the cmd line I entered "net users" and saw that my Admin account is mistakenly named "Ms. Conway". Also, when I use "net user" for MSConway that name is not recognized, nor is any variation on Ms. Conway (like "Ms. Conway" "Conway" "Ms" "Ms.) What can I do? I really want to upgrade to Windows 10 but I'm stuck with no Admin account.

Also, my Windows 7 DVD came with my refurbished HP and says "Intended for distribution with a refurbished PC." When I boot from that DVD I don't get an option to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, so I'm wondering if I can even do a clean install with this type of Windows 7 DVD. Can I?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks a lot,
Trish

So, for the second time this month, a Windows Update has basically killed my machine.

As I was going to bed at 0230GMT, WindowsUpdate started an auto-install and rebooted my machine.
As I logged into the Admin-level account normally, it appears to stop loading any of my programs - firewall, AV, email, everything.
Volume appears, and that's it.

I click my browser icon on the jump bar, and it popsup an alert box that says :

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I get this on everything : command prompt window, Games on non-boot drive, Windows utilities/programs themselves.

Funnily enough, although "Run as Admin" on my browsers doesn't work, using the "Run Safer" option through my OnlineArmor firewall/program guard does allow a browser to run. But not anything else. And not as with Admin Privileges.

Bloody annoying!
I can't uninstall anything.
"Last Known Good Configuration" and "Safe Mode" does nothing for this problem. There's no way to access "System Restore", so even if there is a restore point (which there should be - I made one after reinstalling at beginning of the month, the last time this happened), I can't use it.

The "Shut Down" button on the Start Menu constantly tells me to click it for the update process again....5 times or so, and it's still there.

Hi.

The main (and only account) I have been using since the first beta came out had administrator privileges.

Today when I booted up I noticed that my account could no longer do things that are associated with an admin account, such as installing certain programs and writing to certain folders.

I created another account with admin rights and that account has the exact same problem. I tried removing the admin status on my account and putting it back on but that did not work.

Anyone else have this problem or have any advice on how to get my account seen as an admin account?

I hope someone can help me.

Just this morning i booted up as normal and the always annoying UAC notifications kept popping up. I was sure i had disabled these! Then i went to use my music software and it said that this account didn't have admin privileges.

I checked my user account and the check box states that is is an admin account and that UAC is turnd off. (i only have one account anyways)

Ive looked on google extensively, Tried making new profiles and copy the old one over, but that only worked to a certain point - lots of programs didn't work, lost mail settings etc. Not really workable.

Tried system restore to no avail.

Tried using the vista admin account and changing my account - rebooting - etc. No change.

My guess is that something has got corrupt in my user profile and windows is not remembering that i should be an admin. I can't use my software and i have a deadline!!

Any one who can help will win a magical prize or something!

Hello most excellent group!

My friend across the country got an XP pro box as a gift, and I cannot get admin privileges.
I just wanted to create a new account for him with admin privs, but when logged in as administrator,
the interface is not there to create a new account (behaving like a user account).

I do not know the history of this PC, but I think there have been security restrictions put onto the admin account.

Is there an easy way to restore the default security policy in XP? Or at least a way to remove the restriction on account creation with privs?

This is a new one on me.

It's easy to tell me to re-install, but he is a fairly inexperienced user who can't handle that, and he's 3000 miles away.

Any clues out there?

I was gonne A:B the local users and groups settings with my pc, and review security policies too.
Not sure where to find these controls. I just want it to behave like a normal XP pro box admin account.

A:Admin acct has no admin privileges XP pro

There should be an admin account with full rights that was created when Windows was installed but it is usually only available when booting into safe mode. When safe mode starts, he should see an admin account and his account. Have him select admin and then go to control panel, user accounts. There he should be able to set up accounts and change the rights on existing accounts

That's Windows default behavior if there are other accounts other than Administrator. You can log on as Administrator by pressing Control + Alt + Delete twice in rapid succession at the Welcome Screen. This will bring up the old style logon box where you can type in your desired user name, in this case Administrator. To add the Administrator account to the Welcome screen, download Microsoft's TweakUI utility and repeat the steps show in this animation:

Trying to understand what you mean here.

-You enabled autologon for a standard user account
-UAC is now prompting for authentication but does not allow you to enter the admin credentials?

- Auto logon is not functioning properly if you were prompted for your standard account password to log into windows

Your administrator account is still available, it sounds like may have been hidden by enabling auto logon.

I would try reverting the changes you made to enable autologon.
If that does not make your administrator account reappear:

Since UAC is not functioning properly, created an elevated shortcut to the local security policy.

Basically what you are asking is agaisnt this forum rules. Passwords are put in place to protect the information some one has placed on them.

The problem is "we" don't know who you are or even if it is your PC.

Hello All,
I'm delighted to have found you and after a long day of trying to help myself i am now requiring your much appreciated assistance please! I'm not a techy person at all and am hoping someone can help
Last week my husband purchased a new hp laptop which came with Windows 10
On setup i used my microsoft account to login with a pin, the account was setup as administrator (thinking i could change things later)
About 2 days later i added a standard user account for my husband with a microsoft account login with pin.
I wanted to make his the administrator account but thought i had better change mine to a standard account first! My mistake!!
Now i cannot change anything! i have tried to use the cmd prompt to run as administrator - it asks for administrator permission and does not allow me to enter a password or yes!
I have tried all suggestions to enable the hidden windows 10 account but all ask for the same permission.
I have tried to go to setup, recovery, troubleshoot, advanced option, system restore - it requests an administrator password and when i entered what i thought is mine it does not work! Feeling a little
Does anybody know anyway i can go back in time to start again or how do i access administrator rights as i really need to add programs etc
Thank you for any help given

The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.

The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Basically I have two admin accounts one of which belongs to another member of family and one which belongs to me. Heres the situation:

The person who owns the other Admin account is changing my accounts password (also an admin account). Surely there is some way to make it so that I can not have my account's password changed unless it is logged on to my actual account (so my account's password can only be changed if my account is logged on?)

Is there a way?

Here's an article (for Win2K) that may help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309799But, IMO, the issue here is that the other person can't be trusted. In such a situation I'd suggest making the other account into a Standard User account - that way they won't be able to mess with your stuff, and they'll be reliant upon you for anything that requires administrative privileges.

Hi,
I am working on a 2012 ADDS based network and I have the following requirement.
I want to create a local administrator user account on the local domain computers (Win XP, 7 and 8) which will have full access on the PC but not the permission to edit other local administrator accounts.
Please advise how I can achieve this.

Thanks in advance,

A:local admin account with no permit to edit other admin accounts

Local admin account by definition has access to everything and even if it doesn't it can take ownership and give itself the rights. In other words i am not sure that you can achieve what you
are trying to do.

I would suggest create a single shared local admin account and give it your desktop admins, change the password every 60-90 days to keep it more secure. This is common practice in many
organizations.

Hi danbee80, welcome to the Vista Forums

It depends on what exactly has happened with the accounts but,
Vista is designed so that if there is not an admin account present it reverts to the XP method of working. If you boot into safe mode you should be be able to log in as the Hidden admin account, (Default is Blank password), and thus able to create a new admin account that you can use to recover files etc.

If you have an admin account on the machine that you cannot gain access to you may want to have a look here ...

Welcome to TenForums.

The first account Windows 10 sets up is always an administrator account. Subsequently you can use this to make more accounts. These would be standard accounts when you create them, but as an administrator you can promote them to be administrators too. Unfortunately an administrator can also demote their own account to a standard account, and it sounds like this is what your son has inadvertently done.

First, if you have any other accounts you can log in to, try loging in to each in turn to see if one is still an administrator. If it turn out you truly have no administrator accounts any more, don't despair, there is another one. It's the built-in account named Administrator. This is always disabled by default, but you can enable it. Then you can log in as Administrator and undo the damage your son has done by promoting your account back up to being an administrator again.

See option 4 in this tutorial...
Administrator account - Enable or Disable in Windows 10.

It would be a good idea to disable the built-in Administrator again once you have finished using it. It's not safe to use Administrator as your regular account. It has unlimited access to the whole system and isn't protected by User Account Control (UAC) as normal administrators are. It would also be a sensible precaution to create at least one more local account that is an ... Read more

Hello and welcome to TenForums!

If you can, use system restore to revert back to a previous point when things were working. and then you can try again to avoid entering the password by using the following tutorial. Due to the fact that you seem to have lost Admin rights you may find this difficult to do unless you can boot from a recovery disk and access the advanced startup options.

I also don't have the permission to change anything in regedit and I can't even reset my pc because it requires an administrator password which I don't have, is not "nothing" nor is it administrator or admin or password and I can't change it through cmd either. I can't even access the administrator account because it is disabled and even with an elevated cmd I can't activate the "hidden" administrator account. I've ran malwarebytes and superantispyware and I am now looking for the Gandalf of all Geeks to help me solve this problem. I'd immensely appreciate it!

Using Win 8.1

First off, the account I'am signed on with is listed as admin type account. It's the one I had to enter my windows account email.
Since installing the new MalwareBytes 2.0 program (which went in without any problem) it put an shortcut icon on desktop. I tried too move the icon from desktop to another folder and it said I needed admin rights to do this. Usually once I click on continue it gives me access and proceeds to carry out the command.
So I followed the tutorial to build hidden admin account. I type in: net user administrator /active:yes, it completed. I signed on to the admin account and tried the same operation and it still asked for admin rights.
What am I doing wrong?

UpDate: MalwareBytes 2.0 has a self protection ability that needs to not be enabled, otherwise everything associated with the Program including program icons located anywhere cannot be moved.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum (as in this is my first post) so please be gentle with me if this has been answered before.

So anyway I have a standard account with admin privileges, turned off UAC etc... but it doesn't seem to be elevated all the time for example I still see the "admin shield" icon next to some programs on my desktop. Most of the time I have to right click and select "Run as Administrator" from the popup menu and also Windows 8 still asks me when something needs admin mode and do I want to continue.

I have activated the hidden (true) admin account on my PC and when I log into that everything is elevated and great, no more prompts etc... which is what I want. But the problem is it looks very basic, I want to be able to transfer all my settings from my standard admin account to my true admin account, is this possible? I've tried going to system->advanced system settings->user profiles to copy the account across but the copy button is grayed out.

If this is not possible is there any way to make this standard admin account the full type which is always elevated?

Hope someone can help me, I'm getting very annoyed having to give permission for things I want to do all the time.

Thanks in advance
