Unable to access Internet, unable to run Malwarebytes, help!

Q: Unable to access Internet, unable to run Malwarebytes, help!

Hi there,

My Lenovo Thinkpad laptop got infected by several pop-ups and unwanted programs over the course of the weekend. I launched Avast anti virus, which got rid of the pop ups, and I've manually deleted some of the programs (fake cleaners, etc.) I did not personally download during the time of attack.

I am currently running windows 10 (dumb enough to click the trial, duh)

The laptop is extremely slow now. I have problems accessing the internet from all major browsers (citing DNS errors on Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Opera). However I am able to access the internet using Avast's Safebrowse internet browser.

I have copied the FRST logs as per the rules.

Thank you in advance.

Preferred Solution: Unable to access Internet, unable to run Malwarebytes, help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Never posted to a forum before, but I seem to have a similar issue. Malwarebytes blocks my web browser from resolving a page unless its cached, like Google or a select few. But if I disable the active "Malicious Website Protection", I am able to pull pages just fine. I assume that Malwarebytes sees an unfriendly connection somewhere in the mix there and blocks it. (Will add my FRST files here? Hope this is the right way to approach the issue, rather than start a new thread?)

Hello,
Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.
Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.
Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!
Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
Press the Fix button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finishes FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

My PC was attacked by the 'systemdefender' virus yesterday and I was relieved to get it back again after using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. After fresh reboot I did a final quick scan with Malwarebytes and it said there were 0 infected files left but when I tried to access google the IE page presented the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the page' message with another below suggesting that the site I am trying to reach is dangerous and offering a hidden link back to the System-defender website. I could not believe that this virus was still in my system? Anyway I decided to try SUPERantispyware, ran that and it found several more infected files so I removed them.

I now have the regular 'Internet Explorer cannot display the page' message (without any corrupt link) when I try to access the web. My wireless says it is connected with excellent strength. If I run the IE 'diagnose connection problems' tool, I am told that it is probably firewall settings preventing connection, but even with the firewall turned off I still cannot connect.

I am now guessing that something vital was deleted during the clean-up process. Can anyone suggest anything?

From first topic: Link is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/271418/infected-unable-to-use-computer/ ~ OBI know I am infected, but unsure about where I would start. Basically:My computer was completely fine, my Monday evening regular virus/spyware searches turned up 0 results. Tuesday morning I went on the internet, got a few IE popups (even though I use Firefox). Decided to do a Malwarebytes scan and got over 750 infected objects infected. Let the scan finish and was told to restart computer, restarted and the problems started. I completely lost my desktop, no icons and no toolbar; a few more restarts and I managed to get them back but nothing else worked. Every program says I don't have the rights to access it or the computer has the resources to start.I can't access the internet and any scans I can run stop in the middle and give me the 'system resources' error.I'm not using that computer at the moment, since I'm completely unable to use it.Firstly I must ask, is is necessary to save the dds.scr and rootrepeal scanners directly to the desktop, or can they be moved there after being downloaded to another location? I can't access the internet on the infected computer so I will be unable to download them if they MUST be saved to the desktop. I have already managed to run a Win32kDiag scan (attached).Thank you for any help.

Hi,

Recently I have been really slow and sluggish connections to google or any google related services such as youtube and gmail. Even the search engine takes a long time to load and then it just freezes. I have also noticed that I am unable to access malwarebytes.org. Overall, internet connection seems to really slow and sluggish. I have tried clearing all the cache and so on.

Could this be a spyware infection or a malware infection? What should I do from here?

Thank you.

After an infection of several malware programs, I ran a scan and quarantine with Malwarebytes (scan log attached ScanLog.txt)

After 2 restarts my internet connection seemed broken. It showed a working connection on the icon tray,
and I could connect some specific services, like friends chat on Steam. however I could not connect to anything else (internet browser, skype).

I followed only 'Step 1' on this website: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/fix-internet-connection
as well as entering command 'netsh winsock reset' separately into cmd, it did not work

After another restart, I have no internet connectivity (connected to unidentified network, no internet) still and its seems my sound also does not work (volume icon X'd out)
my internet works fine on wifi devices.

I've attached the Farbar scan logs.

It seems like this is a common problem, I couldn't find a fix-all in any of the other threads, so here I am
Please tell me if I have not included enough information, thank you!

When I clicked on "Update," the blue line that shows the progression of the update flashed, but nothing happened. Also, I am getting frequent dialogue boxes indicating that the Malwarebytes databases are out of date but when I click on "Update Now," nothing happens. I am wondering if malware preventing Malwarebytes from updating. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions and help.

Hello,

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

when you try to go into safemode or safe mode with networking you get message saying a problem has been detected
you then have the option to go to the 3 safe mode types again. however this appears to be a never ending circle of error message, and back to this page!

I have recently and appear to still be infected with the aforementioned virus. I ran SpyBot, ADware SE, AVG and McAfee to try and rid myself of it. Both McAfee and AVG detected it but were unable to remove it totally. AVG put in the vault but in doing so I am no longer able to access the Internet. The browser opens put comes back as unable to detect server. As I cannot get the help from the Internet for my own PC here I am at work hoping for the best. I also tried to do a "restore" with no positive results. Thank you for your anticipated help.

Hi,
I am unable to access internet using my Dell XPS notebook with Windows 7. I did not have this issue since a couple of days ago. The Wireless Network Connection shows that it is connected, but there is yellow triangle that indicates there is no internet access.
I believe it may be malware related, as my Malwarebytes alerted me on an issue, that it has found issues and wanted me to restart the notebook.
I was able to restart, and run a full scan using both Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. It was not able to find any further issues virus or malware, but then I lost my internet connection. I have done multiple refreshes of the modem, router, and worked with Cox (ISP provider) over several hours to fix the issue.

I was looking for possible solutions on-line, and saw the post here for 'Fix Internet Connection after Malware Removal'. It is very well drafted, and the first part of the solution was similar to a lot of the steps I followed with Cox in diagnosis of the issue. I run the reset.bat again but it also did not help. The second step, using Farbar service scanner, was new and I was hopeful this is the fix. however, after running the scanner, file check did not find any missing drivers. Everything was digitally signed.

The Connection Status also seems like the same issue I have:

EDIT:MOVED to Virus,Trojan and Malware Removal Logs ~~boopmeI came into work this morning and was unable to access the internet from my computer. My boss was also in the same position, however, two of my other co-workers in the same office, using the same switch/router/modem were both able to access the internet. I ran some scans and came up with nothing from any of them that I understood. In order to access the internet again, my boss and I both went into our connection settings and changed our DNS Server address and were successful. We are not certain however, if the problem is solved or simply bandaged.Below is a copy of my DDS scan and attached is another log from the DDS scan. For the last few days, I have been unable to access the internet (using Internet Explorer or Firefox, connecting to download email, connecting to update software, etc).

It is a desktop computer (Windows XP) that is hardwired to a router connected to a cable modem.
My laptop which is also hardwired to the router works fine with the internet.

I tried power cycling my router and cable modem but that did nothing.
I looked in device manager and I don't see any changes there.
My connection under Network Connections looks fine.
I checked and my computer is both sending and receiving packets.
I tried pinging websites (google) and it was successful.
I also tried repairing my connection and releasing & renewing my network information with no success.

I am concerned that it may be malware that is preventing my access to the internet but I have not found anything when I performed scans. I provided the results of my HijackThis scan below. Please let me know if you have any ideas or see the issue. Thanks!!

Hey, I searched his forum for my problem, and didn't find anything... so here goes:

After installing SP2, my laptop (connected to router via wireless) has not been able to access the internet.
All other clients to the router (both wireless and wired) have internet access.

Checking my laptop's configurations, I have disabled the windows firewall, and norton firewall isn't running. I cannot access any internet page or the router setup page via any browser.
I uninstalled SP2, but nothing changed. Also, since installing SP2 claimed the last Gb of my HD space, and to uninstall it wanted a further 200Mb space, I had to run a cleanup program to free it (in the process, taking out many temporary files.... and all system restore points).

It has been assigned a valid IP address by the router (no conflicts) and 'repair' ing it in Network Connections said to have succeeded, but internet/router page were still unaccessible.
Changing back to a default HOSTS file didn't resolve, and multiple (around 7) attempts to use the networking wizard produced no results.

In command prompt, I can ping my router successfully. I can even ping google.com, and most other websites (msn websites resolved to 'akadns' and 'nsatc' hosts, and some timed out).
Messenger clients such as Xfire or MSN messenger do not work either... I'm sure this is a simple problem with a simple solution and that I'm making it to be more complicated than it is... but a... Read more

untick everything on that page

Thanks in advance for helping me out. I'm having a problem with my laptop where I am unable to access the internet using any browser! I was using IE, and I thought the problem might just be with IE, so I downloaded Firefox (using my desktop PC) and installed it on the laptop. Same results. It just says something like "Connecting to 64.123.24.222" in the status bar then gives me a DNS error as if I'm not connected to the internet. However, I know my internet connection is fine because Outlook connects to my mail provider and downloads e-mail just fine on the same laptop and my desktop runs off of the same connection. I should also mention that I tried using both the regular Ethernet connection and wireless connection (as I have a wireless router), and it doesn't seem to make a difference which way I'm connecting. Still nothing. Both connections are set up to obtain IP address and DNS server automatically. I have AVG virus finder and have run it with no threats found. I've also run Spybot with no problems found and Advanced WindowsCare and cleaned up any problems that it found. It just started doing this yesterday, and I've tried everything I know to do with no luck.

Any ideas?

Hello. I am running on Vista Basic. When I attempt to access the internet in Firefox, I get a message "Couldn't load XPCom."
I then try with IE and get a message "Internet Explorer has stopped working. Windows will attempt to find a solution to the problem" With no success
I ran a scan using Microsoft Security Essentials which came up clear. I then ran a scan with Malwarebytes, which found 38 threats. A mixture of 'Hijack to the Registry' and 'Pups'. I quarantined them all, but still can't get the internet.
Help with this would be most appreciated.

I'm traveling with my laptop and up until this current stop in Prague, all connections went fine. I'm able to log on to the network both by wireless or wired lan. I show I'm connected with assigned ip address, but when I open the browsers - either ie or ff. - they cannot load the page. I've flushed the dns cache to no avail. I Also tried booting is safe mode but had no luck with that. Tried F11, F10, F9, F8.

Please help... I'm tired of using my phone for email & web.

Thanks

whats the ip addres you get assigned

try these ping tests to see if you have got a connection - even though webpages do not display

try a tcp/ip reset = see below
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I am running WinXP home and on Verizon Fiber Optic Broadband connection.
I am able to access the router OK. but then when I open IE7 I get a timeout with an error message "Unable to resolve verizon.net"
Is there a switch some where that needs to be reset?
I have two other PC's that connect just fine through the same router.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello,

I have a problem connecting to the Internet.

I have a small network containing two computers connected to a D-Link router (DI - 704P), which is connected to the DSL-modem which, in turn, is connected the Internet. The router is set up to work as the DHCP-server and it hands out IP-adresses just fine.

This setup worked well until recently when one of the computers, during a night when noone was using it and it was turned off, stopped being able to access the Internet. Actually, it CAN access the Internet since I can ping computers on the Internet using either IP or name. However, when I use an FTP-program och Firefox I cannot access the FTP-server I want or the Web. The Internet connection works just fine for the other computer in the network.

I have tried to re-install the Network Adapter, turn of the Router and DSL Modem. I have also uninstalled Norton Internet Security since I have heard it can cause issues.

I would be very glad for any assistance!
/ Nelson

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.
Sounds like a browser problem. I saved the following from a previous thread, and think the steps may help your problem. Open a Command window (Start - Run - cmd - OK) and ...

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Note: the log_file_name needs to be specified, e.g. netsh int ip reset reset.log

I'm using Windows 2000, on an old IBM laptop T22, and IE6.0.2800.1106IS. After the system was unused for about 7 days--but on-line via my wireless connection, I could not access any web sites. After a re-boot, access was OK for a short time, then stopped again. Now all attempts to get to sites returns the "The Page cannot be displayed" message, with a note Cannot find server or DNS error.

BUT I CAN get e-mail, ping major web-sites, and chat on various IM clients. So I assume that the issue is with IE or some sort of virus.

The lap-top is wirelessly connected to my home network. It can see the network--and as noted above, I can send/receive e-mail and ping sites.
To add to the issue--I did do a registry clean-up with a tool called ashampooWinOptimizer 4 a couple of weeks ago--and this may have been the first reboot since then. I tried to restore the registry from my back-up, but apparently it is corrupt, since it will not reload.

So where do I start? Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Denny

A:Unable To Access Internet

Some more information on my problem:

It appears that I can access secure sites--those with https:// but not those that are regular http://.

I also notice, when I attempt to go to something like www.yahoo.com, the IE window on the lower left says Connecting to site 64.8.xx.xx instead of giving the name of the site as it used to do. Then it does not connect.

I checked for a bad Hosts file, but as far as I can tell, I don't have one.

Again, thanks in advance for any help.

Denny

THIS IS ABOUT MY LAPTOP AND NOT BEING ABLE TO BROWSE THE INTERNET AT ALL ON IT (WIRELESSLY OR WITH ETHERNET CABLE JOINING IT TO THE ROUTER)
13 days ago I was on my laptop, i had just turned it on and realised i wasn't able to connect wirelessly to the internet (although i was apparently connected wirelessly to our house's network.... like normal).
I'm on Vista and, sorry I am not good with technical terms whatsoever guys, the little two monitors with a globe icon didn't have a globe (just two monitors!).

NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO SAY THAT: I've had this laptop for years and the router for slightly less, but the whole time I've had that router, it has been connected to the desktop pc via an ethernet cable (and i'd been able to connect wirelessly to our network on my laptop and browse the internet on my laptop).
Recently the desktop pc got moved into the other room where it had never been turned on since (just because no one needed to), and it had been in that room for weeks before this problem happened.

About 10 days ago I connected my ethernet cable into my laptop (the other end connected to the router) and I was able to browse the internet! I went into the other room trying to stretch the ethernet cable to reach... but when i tried to browse the internet again, i wasn't able to.

It's hard to remember all this detail but I believe that it was after that event that I plugged the ethernet cable back into my desktop pc (other end in router), plugged the pc in (it had not ... Read more

For the last few weeks, I have been unable to access the internet (using Internet Explorer or Firefox, connecting to download email, connecting to update software, etc).

I was concerned that the problem may be malware related but the HijackThis log I posted in the security forum apparently looked fine. I have not found anything when I performed scans either. Please let me know if you have any ideas or know what the issue may be. Thanks!!

Hello! I have a problem. It has been more 2 weeks now since my laptop is suddenly unable to access the internet (both wifi and cable).

It succesfully connects to a wireless network, I can see the name of it, but after connecting my laptop is displaying "No internet access" below the network name. Also, In the task bar, my wireless icon has an exclamation mark, in a yellow triangle. I have tried to connect with another laptop and it worked fine with the other laptop. So, is the problem with my laptop, or with the network setting. Can you help me?

One of my coworkers cannot access the internet by typing in the url. He can by typing Ip address. When he tries to ping the sites - that fails as well.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Unable to access internet via URL

If he can visit some websites (they're not cached are they?) and not ping them i usually find this is down to my firewall. If you co-worker has installed a firewall get them to check their firewalls network config. Most firewalls have ICMP features such as 'Ping and tracert in/out'. Also make sure he is using ping correctly! Ping will not like:
Code:
C:\> ping http://www.google.com
Basically check this.

If not try a system restore to when it was working...
It could be many many things so best to start somewhere easy
