Preferred Solution: I want complete access to my comp at my parents house from my comp at my sisters pad.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everybody, thank you in advance for checking this out.

My sister's computer has been behaving strangely. She has a Dell XPS with 1 gb of ram , which should be quite adequte for her web surfing, emailing, word processing, and instant messaging. The computer is suprisingly slow and on internet explorer popups will popup somehwhat randomly. The internet acts strangely sometimes, for instance gmail does not work at all, it just says the page cannot be found. I tried installing firefox but the internet does not work in firefox, only internet explorer.

Here are my main priorities
-find out and fix what is making the computer run so slow
-make firefox work so she has a safer browsing experience.

Here is a HijackThis! Log. I appreciate anybody who helps me out ;-).

I first scaned with spybot, ad-aware, and CWShredder.
Then I performed a scan with Trend Micro house call, and it has found over 20 infected files with various trojans, all of which could not access or non-cleanable.

Here is a HJT log.

I have a feeling that I will have to disable SYSTEM RESTORE and go into safe mode to delete the various files???

Any help would be appreciated.

Well the main problem is that the wireless now doesn't connect while another laptop still works fine. As I looked into it, I saw a bunch of junk on it and asked her if she installed it. She said she didn't so I assume she clicked something she wasn't supposed to and got some crap on it. According to her it runs a bit slow as well. So basically internet doesn't work, and possibly junk is making this computer slow. Thanks in advanced.

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

thanks

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

Hi, had a complete freeze of my comp. first the desktop froze up and the sound on the youtube vid i was playing at the time went into a stuck loop. after about 2 minutes it went to bsod and then just stayed there with a message to reset the comp, which the only way i could do it was by holding the power button down for 5 seconds.

OS - Windows 7
? x64
? Windows 7
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM
? Age of system (hardware) 6 months
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? 6 months, not reinstalled

? CPU - I3 3220
? Video Card - none

Had an issue with crashing a few months ago but after loads of scans it seemed to suddenly stop crashing and the only changes recently were a chrome update and an avast system update.

I went to my computer this morning (just had computer at desktop with no programs running) and found that it had a complete physical memory dump. I restarted the computer thinking no big deal I had seen this once before a few years ago on a different computer. It restarted from an old system restore point in Sept 07. I could have sworn I had set up for auto restore point creation or something of the like. Well that is my only newest restore point to go to other than the one for today after the PMD. The biggest thing I am worried about is I had TONS of pictures of my new baby on this computer. THAT is what I really want to make sure I can get. What info do I need to get for you to help and how can I pull it up. I lost access to internet with that computer so I am using my laptop to post this. I can do screenshots and put that on a thumbdrive to this computer for posting. Thank you for anyone that can try to help.

Hi. . .

Welcome to TSF.

I assume that since that you saw the new restore point, you actually logged on to Windows. Did you search for the pictures and cannot find them?

Also, check for the existance of any memory dumps left behind by the system crash. They would be located in the folder c:\windows\minidump if they exist. The filenames would be similar to Mini040308.dmp.

Please let me know. I'll then provide further instructions.

I have been reading on different sites to download different anti-spyware programs. Right now I have:

1. Ad-aware
2. Spybot
3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert
5. Spyware Blaster
6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert
8. Hosts Xpert

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

Well dude.. i would just go with ad aware.. it wont really slow the comp down

somthing activly scanning such as norton avast etc.. will slow your comp down by taking resources... just go with a scanner like adaware that doesnt use resources..

Computer B: Windows 98SE
Being Wirelessly connected to the xp computer

Ok well i know i have my network set up because a) i went through the XP computer, and The 98SE computer is getting an internet connection and finally C) because the XP can connect to the 98SE but not visa versa

Now every time im on the 98SE computer and i try to connect to the XP comp i get this "Resource: \\MAIN\IPC$" Then its askin for a password, ive tried every single password ive known it wotn connect, i have even made an account exactly the same as the 98SE computer on the XP computer. IE (this is true) The windows 98SE computer has a username of Default and password - nothing. So i went to the XP connection, i made an account named Default and in the password field put nothing. I dont know what else to do ive tried everything plz help soon!!!

A:problem connecting 98SE comp to Xp comp but not visa versa

On the XP machine:

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

I tried passwording my folders but that didn't work, i ended up losing a lot of the files i did password.

I tried turning off file sharing, that did nothing.

Any help would be great.

Edit: Turned off public sharing and he can still view them.

how do i, say, leave my comp on at my house and go over to my brothers house and access my computer via the internet?

A:access my comp from another location???

To turn on Remote Access, go to:

Start
Right click: Computer
Properties
Click: Remote Settings
Check: Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer

If Remote Access isn't built into your Vista Home Premium, if you're brave, you can reset your registry and add it into your system: Enable Remote Desktop Connection for Vista Home Premium:

Enable Remote Desktop Connection For Vista Home Premium - WGSWiki

OR there are some third party programs you can use, like:

LogMeIn Hamachi: https://secure.logmein.com/products/...pn.asp?lang=en, or UltraVNC or TightVNC, or others.

It just goes to the white screen that says "try refreshing or later...blah" I need to access it soon and i dont know what to do. I know its not my connection bcause i can download music and play games online. At the bottom of IE "the place that says Done right now" it flashes C:\WINNT\system32\shdoclc.dll\dnserror and displayes in an error box "Internet Explorer could not open the Search Page. Now matter what i type it in try searching for it and comes up with that. For example. I type in www.bob.com in the browser bar and at the bottom it says "Opening www.bob.com" "Opening www.bob.edu" "Opening www.bob.org" just changing the .com part. Ok i have read other threads but none seem to help me out.

I have 2 computers networked with a cross over cable.

Specs:

win xp pro
ip 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
connected to cable modem
ICS enabled

2nd comp:
win 95
ip 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
connected to xp

both have netBIOS enabled.

So the LAN works fine. The problem i'm dealing with is that i can't access the internet, email and wat not on the 95 machine. Ne help would be much appreciated.

I just bought a new computer, and set everything up and the computer is not recognizing the internet connection. When I go to setup an internet connection it tells me to connect to a broadband connection and requires a username and password. The computer is the only one in the house, and is plugged directly into the modem from Time Warner. I have never set up a username or password through my ISP.

When my computer tries to find the broadband connection it says it is connectiong through the WAN miniport. I have bought a new ethernet cord and still no connection. The modem is lit up all the way until PC/Activity and Standby have no lights on. So I assume there is no connection between the modem and PC. I have walked through Dell troubleshooting and they ran diagnostics that told me the network card is ok because we did an ipconfig and a "ping localhost" and it sent and received.

Dell is going to send a tech to the house to replace my motherboard but I figured I would try posting here just in case someone knows a quick fix. I even installed my old network card to the new computer and still no luck.

Please help.

A:New Comp no Internet access

Do you have red or yellow flags in the Device Manager? (Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
Have you attempted to reinstall your drivers, despite what Dell says?
The IP Config shows the problem is elsewhere. Have you talked to Time Warner tech support?
You can test by intalling a PCI ethernet card and driver. If that works, it is your board.

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but whatev

I just recently got a new computer installed with the Vista Home Premium x64 OS. After many failed attempts at transferring my old files i eventually ended up putting my old hard drive into my new computer, and attempted to drag and drop into a folder i created specifically for those files.

Upon trying to do this, it transferred all of my program files, but when it gets to my actual documents, where i keep my most important files, it says i need administrative permission to do this.

Then, when i tried to access the files directly in my old hard drive, it said that i couldn't do that, and showed this:

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder."

"You have been denied permision to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

and then when i use the security tab to transfer file permission to me, it still doesn't do anything.

any help please?

When you are going to "open" up the folder that is on your old HDD. Right click on it and click "Run as administrator." This should allow you full access to the files and able to transfer them without any problems.
