Ctrl+Shift+Arrow keys does automatically advance

Q: Ctrl+Shift+Arrow keys does automatically advance

Normally when selecting text in Word, notepad, etc., holding down Ctrl+Shift+Right (or Left) arrow key will automatically advance the cursor to expand the selected text a full word at a time. However the shortcut currently only works to highlight one word at a time, i.e. I have to re-press the arrow key for each word. The Shift+arrow and Ctrl+arrow both advance automatically a single letter at a time just fine, its just the three keys together that doesn't work the way it should. And the weird thing is, it's only a problem with the left Ctrl+Shift on the keyboard, the right hand Ctrl+Shift+Arrow combo works fine. The three key combo also works fine on-screen keyboard. Have you heard of this and do you know how I can fix it? Thanks for your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I used to always use CTRL + Shift + Arrow Key to highlight a whole word but now when I try CTRL + SHIFT + Arrow Key it changes one of my monitors screen orientation.

I have dual monitors if you are confused with the above statement.

I would like to know how to change it back to highlighting a word rather then changing the screen orientation.

This would be greatly appreciated.

A:Remap CTRL + SHIFT + Arrow Key

I suspect the problem is in video card related crapware from manufacturer.
You can try the following (for ATI cards):
1. Backup current installed driver with DriverBackup!
to a folder ABC.
2. Turn off your internet connection (unplug cable or shutdown wireless)
3. Uninstall all ATI video drivers and related stuff (Catalyst Control Center, other staff with ATI in the name, etc) through Control Panel Programs and Features.
Instead manually install driver - Control Panel - System - Device manager. You video card will be with small yellow triangle on it, Right click - Properties- Driver tab - Update Driver - Browse my computer for driver software - Browse to ABC folder (see 1). Click Next button.

Please let us know if it worked for you.

Hello, I'm having troubles with the keyboard. Several combinations are not working anymore. Besides the mentioned combination also CTRL ALT DELETE (and it's equivalent in a virtual client: CTRL ALT END) stopped working.

I am not aware of a recent change to the system or the moment this problem occured. Quite honest, I don't have a clue where to look. So all the help available is very much appreciated.

Thank you all.

Okay, I've had this problem for almost a month now and I've yet to find a solution.

When I'm running certain program, my computer seems to think that the shift and ctrl keys are in a pressed position even though they're not. I didn't realize it until I was trying to configure my tablet buttons to keyboard commands and the input box said that I was pressing the ctrl and shift keys. This also occurs when I'm playing fullscreen games or using flash. Otherwise, its fine, I haven't had any problems with other applications.

I know this is not sticky keys because I don't even have that option on my computer, and its not my keyboard as it works fine most of the time, its only with some programs that it occurs. Could anyone help me

I'm new to this forum. I encounter a problem recently. My keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+[left/right] arrow key doesn't work in any of my editors like: Microsoft word 2007; Microsoft wordpad; Open office writer and Abiword-I use this key combination for move between words in my word processors.
Because of this problem is general in all of my editors I think this is not a software specific issue and belongs to my Win 7.
so please guide me about that.

Secondly, i've just checked and all seems to be ok on my Word 2010, have you made changes to the options within Word at all?

Hi all, I am writing this post as I am unfortunately having issues with my ProBook keyboard. All of a sudden I powered it on the other day, and soon noticed there is an issue with my shift and ctrl keys (left and right).Pressing them seems to provide no response and although only really a minor issue, it can be really annoying as the keys are used for many shortcuts and functions. I have tried a few things to fix the issue but after failing I am now posting here! What I have tried so far.. Restarted the device mulitple timesBooted in safe mode (shift does not work in safe mode either)Uninstalled all keyboard drivers from device manager (after rebooting they all keep reappearing anyway)Checked the HP drivers site and cannot see a specific driver for the onboard keyboardInstalled generic third part software to identify and update all laptop drivers. This completed but no mention of the keyboard. At this point I am a bit stuck. Firstly it would be great to locate the appropriate driver for the keyboard, or something generic. All other buttons work with no issue including the function keys. I do hope it is not a hardware issue! Thanks in advance - H

I'm wondering if there is any software around that would allow me to bind something like Shift+A to function as F1, or Ctrl+Z to function as F2, etc.

The reason I ask is because I'm running an old game that doesn't allow changing default hotkeys (A,S,D,F,G,H, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5) to shift/alt/ctrl modifiers like more modern games do. What I'd like to do is be able to play using the default row of A, S, D, F, G, then making Shift+A function as F1, Shift+S function as F2, and so forth.

I'm not looking for a program that would make permanent registry changes in particular, but if there is one that does make those changes (but reversible), then I'd consider using it.

I'm not interested in any program that'd just rebind the F1-F12 keys to keys like Q,W,E,R,T,Y. It has to allow me to bind modifiers (shift/alt/ctrl) + a key to act like those function keys.

Thanks in advance !

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

Anyone have an easy fix for this? Apparently we lost this shortcut funcationality awhile back. I constantly find myself opening up the laptop to a sideways screen and it is really, really annoying. I use the tablet function a lot and sometimes sleep the laptop or close it and then open it in a different mode (laptop mode) and I'm guessing that the computer isn't smart enough to know to display landscape instead of portait. It wouldnt be much of a problem if the shortcut keys actually worked. Very annoying to right click and navigate the menus. Also I noticed that whenever I'm in laptop mode, the rotation lock button is greyed out. Why is that? It seems that the rotation lock is always on and I can't deactivate it. I have a Yoga 370. What have you others have done? Will Lenovo address this problem? Thanks

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hello,How can I get the home and end keys near the arrow keys on my keyboard without losing page up and page down?I'm a power screen reader user and use the home and end keys once every 5 minutes and I use the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. This means there is a whole lot of moving my hand from the arrow keys to the top of the keyboard. After a day of using my new laptop, my arm is starting to hurt from moving from the bottom to the top of the keyboard so much. What most manufacturers do is have fn+left be home and fn+right be end. They also have fn+up be page up and fn+down be page down. I would love this! Currently the page up and page down keys are right above the arrow keys. FN + page up and down being mapped to home and end would be great as well. I can't figure out how to map fn keystrokes using something like Auto Hot Key though. I would be OK with swapping the home and end keys with the page up and down keys, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Auto Hot Key does not work 100% of the time and I need this functionality 100% of the time. What method would be the best for me to get home and end by the arrow keys?

Thanks to Costco's deal on this laptop, got it for $850 new. So far I'm liking it, and it's got big shoes to fill, since I'm replacing my 2010 MacBook Pro 17".  I'm surprised that I actually use the touch-screen all the time now. I wasn't expecting to, but it's convenient to be able to touch in addition to mouse/trackpad around. The biggest complaint is that the right-shift key is small, and sharing a space with the up-arrow key.  The up-arrow is where most fast typists like me would expect the right-shift to be.   Thanks to forum member PCB here is the solution: 1. Download KeyTweak 2.3 -- install it. It's free.  It's a remapping / reassigning software for keyboards.2. Open KeyTweak.exe (I use the Cortana search to find it)3. On the app screen you'll see a small keyboard that's not exactly the same as what you have, but just tap the key "83"4. In the drop-down menu "Choose New Remapping" select Right-Shift.5. Click the "Remap Key" button.  Then Apply.  You don't have to re-start the computer now, but once you do, the up-arrow will now function as Shift! You also have the option to re-map the right-shift to up-arrow but I didn't, because there's also an up-arrow in the number keypad on the right-most side of the keyboard. I created a Lenovo forum account just to be able to share this trick, which is making me like this laptop enough to keep it

I don't have this option on my Intel graphics card, but I found this on their web site.
In Windows XP go to Start | Control Panel.

If the Windows XP Control Panel is in Classic View you will see the Intel(R) Extreme Graphics icon in the Control Panel window. Double click on it to open it.

If the Windows XP Control Panel is in Category View you will see Pick a category on the right side of Control Panel. On the left side of Control Panel click on Other Control Panel options found in small print under See Also, and then double click on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics. (If nothing appears under See Also then click on See Also to open the list of Control Panels. Then click on Other Control Panel options.)

At the top of the Intel(R) Extreme Graphics window that opens click on the Hot Keys tab.

Remove the check from the box labeled Enable Hot Keys to disable the Hot Keys feature, and click OK to save this change. Close Control Panel.

How long has CTRL+C been kaput?

If it has been for a while, there is a good chance the keyboard itself is already kaput and needs replacing.

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

Hi. In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that using shift+del in text input areas, such as Notepad, OOo Writer, browser text fields, etc - pretty much anywhere I can input text - shift+del is acting identically to ctrl+v. I don't know why this is occurring and I want to make it stop. I have not intentionally done anything to change key mapping.

Does anyone know anything about shift+del acting identically to ctrl+v? I know that shift+del is used to bypass the Recycle Bin when deleting files, and in fact that is the only topic I can find when Googling about this (adding "paste" does not seem to help my search results).

ETA: I should add that my keyboard is pretty standard and nothing had changed with it since I started noticing this...

The behavior you are getting is the old-school shortcut method. Windows honors both the old shortcuts and the new shortcuts

It has irritated me for years that ctrl + right arrow puts the caret (the blinky insertion point) at the beginning of the next word rather than the end of the current word. This is irritating because it includes the spacebar character when selecting a whole word with ctrl+shift+right. It is especially irritating because it is inconsistent with ctrl + left arrow, which does not include the useless spacebar character.

Try it now, seriously. Open up a text document, click a random word, then ctrl + shift + left and you'll notice that it (correctly) doesn't include the useless space behind the word. Now try ctrl + shift + right and you'll see that now it has stupidly included the empty space in front of the word.

Does anyone know of a way (perhaps a registry entry?) that changes this ludicrous behaviour? Firefox has a config setting called layout.selection.caret_style which can fix it, but I can't figure out how to fix it in Windows itself. I searched the entire Windows registry for terms like "caret", "space", "insertion", and "insert", but I didn't come across any relevant registry entries. I also searched Google for 15-20 minutes in vain.

Whoever can help me fix this damnable infernal functionality will have my eternal gratitude.

A:Ctrl + Right Arrow behaviour - how do I change?

Welcome to Seven Forums Aelius. If you search Ctrl+ Right arrow behavior you will find countless complaints from various porgrams own forums, to Ubuntu, etc. It seems no one is happy with Ctrl+ either arrow, lol. You could remap the key, but would generally have to know the function that would result in the desired action. As far as I know, there is no key combo that has the desired effect you seek. You might post in the Autohotkey forum, and see if they have any ideas. If anyone knows, they probably would.

I'm using a Lenovo U300s.  Overall it's a solid laptop, but there's one thing that's really bothering me. I use the shortuct combination, CTRL+SHIFT+T, quite often.  It's supposed to re-open the most recently closed tab in Firefox, Chrome, and IE. Unfortunately, on my U300s, it opens up some screen whose function seems to be to select a desktop image.  I'm not very clear what this screen is supposed to do, but it's clearly not nearly as useful as re-opening the most recently closed tab. Is there any way to disable this? Thanks,Andrew

A:CTRL+SHIFT+T - What does this hotkey do, and how can you disable it?

One thing to check is the graphics driverAdvanced settings, if Intel. It has shortcuts, which you can disable.

In Windows Explorer, there is a little-known keyboard shortcut, Ctrl-Shift-NumPadPlus, that causes the columns in the file listing window to be automatically resized to their optimum value. This keyboard shortcut has stopped working. Does anyone know how to get it back?

I try to bind Photoshop to ctrl+shift+P and it doesn't work. I can use ctrl+alt+P but that requires to hands as I push ctrl+alt with my left ring finger and index finger. When I use ctrl+shift I use my ring finger and middle finger to press them while using my index to push the third key. So I'm thinking something else is binded to ctrl+alt+P, but when I press them, nothing happens so why isn't it letting me bind those three?

A:Can't bind programs to ctrl+shift+(key)

Is this what you are doing: Create keyboard shortcuts to open programs

I just tried it and it works okay.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W530. Got it about three months ago, with Windows 7 Pro-64 installed. My issue is that the keyboard shortcut to Run As Administrator doesn't work, whether I use Ctrl-Shift-Click or Ctrl-Shift-Enter (where appropriate). Instead, the program just opens normally, with no UAC prompt. The only way I can find to Run As Administrator (without changing the program or shortcut properties) is through the context menu.

Any thoughts or suggestions on why the shortcut might not be working and how I can remedy it?

A:Ctrl-Shift-Click does NOT Run As Administrator for me

You could try SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

So for some reason, pressing Ctrl+Shift+0 under Vista just plain doesn't work (Google yielded that it's a problem with Vista based on virtual machine tests of Vista and XP clean installs under 2K).

A bit of mucking with AutoHotkey allowed me to bypass this problem with this script:

SendPlay, ^+)
But I'm awful curious now... what the heck does it do and why doesn't it work?

A:Ctrl+Shift+0 (zero) doesn't work

this is the fix

Hello, I am having a very strange behavior. When I press and hold the SHIFT key, it will not persist. For example, if I wanted to type a row of "*", I press the shift key and hold it, and it will type "*****888888". This happens on the laptop keyboard, a USB keyboard I attached, and the on screen keyboard, so it does not appear to be a hardware problem.

It seems as though the shift is activated for only about a second when I press and hold the shift key, and then it reverts back.

The same thing happens to the CTRL key. Very annoying when trying to do cut/paste (ctrl-c/ctrl-v).

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!!!

I just tried on my system and I can not duplicate your problem.

I've included a snapshot of my settings from:

If I am deleting a bunch of text, I will highlight it with the keyboard by holding shift + ctrl and using the left arrow to go back and select it all and then erase it.

Today, when I press those keys, nothing happens. I can highlight words by holding shift and hitting the left arrow. I can move one word at a time by holding ctrl and hitting the left arrow. But when I do them at the same time, nothing happens. Sticky keys is off. Filter keys is off.
