installing DVD burner on my brand new dell

Q: installing DVD burner on my brand new dell

I just recieved my new Dell dimernsion 4600 and wanted to install an Optorite DVD+/-RW that I just purchased. The burner reads and writes in both cd and DVD. My new Dell came only with a CD ROM drive. I am wanting to know if there would be an advantage to keeping the new Dell CD-ROM drive in my computer or should I just install the DVD burner in its place.

THanks for your assistance. I am definitely new at installing hardware so any tips about the installation process would be very helpful

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the CDROM is on the secondary IDE cable, install the DVDRW on the same cable as the CDROM. Make the DVDRW master and the CDROM slave.

This way you can do on the fly CD to CD copying.

At the end of the year you can replace the CDROM with one of those Dual layer DVD 16x drives that are supposed to be coming out.

Hello all I recently built my first computer and everything was smooth. Now I'm having problems with my DVD burner. I have a brand new Lite On LH-20A1S model drive. Before this one I had a brand new LG GSA-H62NK. Both drives will read and play dvds but won't burn them. I also have a DVD CD/RW drive that works perfectly plays dvds and music and burns music. The two drives that I'm having trouble with are both SATA while the other drive that works is a IDE drive. I'm thinking that may have something to do with the problem but I can't find anything in the BIOS that looks like it would have an effect.

When I attempt to burn a DVD with Nero 7 or 8 "tried both" the process starts and it will stay on 1% for about 15 minutes then it comes up and says

generating high compatibility borders
successful generating high compatibility borders

then it says burn process failed at 18x.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, AMD Athlon 4000+ Processor 2.41 Ghz, 1GB ram, DFI nF4 Ultra-D MoBo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have a 2 month old XPS15 purchased form the Dell Outlet Store in the UK. I usually have it permanently plugged in, but recently used it on battery power for the first time. I noticed that the battery wasn't charging, and the indicator light at the front blinks alternately white and orange (one white then one orange)
After a bit of investigation I found the BIOS Battery settings saying that the battery was not a genuine Dell battery and therefore wouldn't charge. I have not changed the battery - the machine is exactly as supplied by Dell.
It now pops up a warning about the battery whenever I power on.
I tried upgrading the BIOS (from 1.1.3) but every time I tried it would fail.
Is it now standard practice for Dell to supply laptops without genuine Dell batteries?

Hi all,

A few days ago, I bought a GALAX Gamer 120GB SSD and a Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM HDD from a PC parts store. I installed them in my tower's case and connected them up. Then, I attempted to install Windows 8.1 Core onto the SSD from a bootable USB drive I had made using Microsoft's Installation Media Creation Tool. The installer promptly error'd. I attempted a few more times, to no avail. I contact MS's answer desk, and they couldn't help, so I left it for the night and went to bed. The next day, I decide that I will attempt to install Windows onto the HDD and then clone it over. Of course, it installed perfectly fine on the HDD. Using both Windows' System Image Backup/Restore tool and a myriad of others, I still could not get an installation on the SSD. I ran a surface test on the SSD which turned up fine. I tried again tonight with the same USB drive to install Windows onto the SSD, again, it error'd, I contacted the MS Answer Desk again, they had me change a BIOS settings, and then take my ram cards out and clean them with an eraser. Neither of those worked, and MS support suggested I contact a local tech as it is a hardware issue.

Do you guys have any thoughts on what I should do? Feel free to PM or reply asking for more info.

So here's the story. One of our staff knocked a ThinkCentre A2U onto the floor.  It appears that the HDD is damaged beyond repair - we can't get past the BIOS screen. Easy enough to buy a new HDD, but how to install Windows 7?  We have the Product Key, but Microsoft rejected it saying that we needed to contact the manufacturer - Lenovo. So here we are.  DigitalRiver is no help, it just refers back to Microsoft. Any suggestions, guys?

I am new to Windows 10, never used it... Here is my question...

I have a new SSD and a genuine Windows 7 Pro key, which I have not used. Do I have to install windows 7 with this key on my new SSD first and then upgrade and then clean install windows 10 or is there a way to do a clean install of Windows 10 and then activate using the windows 7 key.

I suspect the answer will be NO but I thought I would ask...

Thanx for the replies...

No need to install 7. Download 10 Pro from Tech Bench, put it on a USB with Rufus, clean install Windows 10 and put in your 7 Pro key when asked.

2. I am installing a brand new hard drive, fresh out of the box.
3. The drive that died on me was a Seagate Momentus 7200.1, 100GB, 7200 RPM, Firmware 8.04
4. I went online to best buy and micro center, but am in the dark regarding the driver interface. Since the laptop is pretty much dead in the water, how can I determine the it? I'll need to know that before I walk up to the kid in the store, right?
5. As soon as you tell me what I need to buy, I'll install it and then have some questions about installing Windows XP.

A:Installing a brand new hard drive, what's next?

Hey Patrick,

Yes you check what the problem is in your lap before buying the HDD. So,
Does the laptop turns on without the hard disk? If so a message should appear there is no boot device.
If the lap works fine without the hard disk well you should buy the new one.
If the lap is pretty much dead well it is probably dead from every circuit on it.

I just bought a new laptop yesterday, so there's no bugs or anything on it. All I've done is check my gmail, install an the antivirus program Best Buy gave me, and try to install some of my audio recording software (Adobe Audition and Guitar Port).
And that is where my problem starts.
My old computer had windows xp on it, and it ran my software just fine.
Now with this brand new computer, it won't install.
I get just past the part where you agree with all their license stuff,
and then suddenly it tells me, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." And then it just closes the program.
I bought this software in 2007, so I hope it isn't "too old" for Windows 7 or something...

I have a CD burner my daughter gave me. She got it a year ago, never used it (bought a computer with one built in) and just gave it to me. In the box. But, the USB cord, and CD (to install it) have gotten misplaced at her house (over the year) (she has teenagers (LOL)

I have ordered another cord and blank CDs.

What do I need to download to use it?

I was thinking just a driver, but someone just told me I need a program to use it. I plan to use it for saving files (pictures, etc) as a backup from the PC. But, my kids will probably want to use it to make music CDs, too.

I thought I could just find and install the driver and then use whatever I'm on (for files) like WORD, and SAVE AS, just pick the CD drive (will it say E DRIVE because my PC one is D?) and SAVE AS.

Any simple basics for a CD newbie will be appreciated.

A:Installing a dvd burner

You won't need anything you don't already have, unless you've got one of those old ide ribbons that don't have a second connector for another drive.

If you want to do it real fast I'd set your new one up as slave and leave the other one untouched.
Personally, if it was my machine I'd make the new one master and the old one slave, but in reality it doesn't make one bit of difference.

Windows will autodetect the drive, so you won't need any drivers. To burn a dvd though you are going to need some software. I recommend Nero, but there are some others that will work.

Hi, I recently purchased the 16x Dual Format DVD recorder from Memorex (Drive is internal). I have gotten it in place, and all the cords (power supply, and IDE/Ribbon Cable. The jumper on my drive is set to the default, as CS, my other disc drive is also set to CS, it was shipped that way. When I turn on my computer it goes a black screen, and lets me choose how I want to start windows, and change my settings (They are all set correctly). When I choose Start Windows Like Regular, the screen with "Microsoft XP HOME EDITION" appears, it all loads. Then the screen goes black, I have waited 20 minutes, but it stays black. I checked to see if it was my monitor, but the monitor was not the problem. If I reboot, it takes me back to the screen that asks me the way I would like to start windows. If I do safe mode, everything loads perfectly, and the drives are installed in the "My Computer" section. Baisacally, my question is, what am I doing wrong? The IDE port on the motherboard isn't fried of course. Why wont windows load if it isnt in safe mode, but will run regularly if the IDE Ribbon is disconnected from its motherboard port. Please get back to me ASAP, I really appreciate your service!

The problem is mi IDE cable can only connect 2 devices and I already have a CD ROM and a zip drive, so I was wondering if there is such a thing as an IDE cable capable of connecting 3 devices?? (I went 2 4 computer stores and none of them had one) If not, then what's the problem if I connect it to the IDE cable for my hard drive?? (The manual for the burner says I should avoid doing that) And lastly, even if I were to use the hard disc's IDE cable, I'd have to hook it up completely different (i.e., connect the zip to the hard drive and the burner tu the cd rom), do I have to reconfigure all my devices if I do that?? Any help is appreciated!

A:Need help installing a CD burner

2 devices per cable is the limit. I think your best bet would be to connect the hard drive as primary master with the zip as primary slave. Then connect the CDRW as secondary master and the cd rom as secondary slave. The jumpers must be set correctly and windows should find everything in their new positions.

I am interested in getting a DVD burner installed on my computer. Today while I was at the office supply store, one of the gentlemen that works there told me that he could install it for me when I was ready. He told me that it was relatively simple to install and when I asked him where it would be installed on the computer since I have a CD burner he told me that he would take out the CD rom drive and install the DVD burner there. Is this the usual thing that is done?
Just last weekend I got hooked up to our local cable TV's internet service. I can now download music very quickly, which used to take 20 minutes to an hour can be done in just a few minutes. I was just wondering how long it should take to download a movie and how much I will be paying for the DVD disks. This is all very new to me and I have so many questions. Everyone has always been so helpful to me, so hope that continues.

Well you need to make sure that you have your new burner set as a slave on the cable. I had some problems with my aspi drivers as well. But if your problems says it is in the cables, then you might try and change that drive to a slave.

The second hard drive is the master drive, and my CD burner is the slave, on one cable. On the second cable, the first hard drive is the master, and the new DVD burner will be the slave. However, the cable isn't long enough to support the first hard drive in the master position and the new DVD burner as the slave, so I'm wondering if there are any other setups that will work.
Here is a diagram of the setup:
For instance, would it work to have the DVD burner as the master, or would that make the hard drive too slow?

The optical drive and hard drives have to be set up as masters and slaves. The hard drive is the primary master on IDE channel 1, and the CD drives are secondary master and slave on channel 2. You have to set the jumper on the back of the new drive to slave and connect it to the same cable the hard drive is on. The jumper on the new drive may have been set to master.

Ok so I think I know how to do this I just wanna make sure this is right. I have a Hard Drive in my Primary IDE drive as Master and a CD-ROM in my Secondary IDE drive as Master. So I plug this CD burner ribbon into the Secondary IDE ribbon (CD-ROM) then into the burner and switch the CD burner jumpers to slave. Can somebody tell me if this is the right way to install this device?

A:Installing CD burner

Sounds OK. The HD is connected to the primary IDE controller via a ribbon cable, and set to master. On the secondary IDE controller you have the CD-ROM at the end of the ribbon cable, set to master, and the burner further down the cable set to slave. Should work OK.

I have been having some trouble with my brand new Dell XPS 13. When I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep, when I come back, it does not load properly. What I see is whether I want to boot up in safe mode or start windows normally. I have seen the BSOD 3 times now just doing normal internet browsing and while the computer was sitting idle.

Can anyone help!? Thanks in advance.

First of all, can I say that I am somewhat computer illiterate, but I am determined.

I recently purchased a new desktop computer, the specs are:

Intel Core i7 2700K CPU - 3.5GHz
Gigabyte / Asus Z68 Motherboard
16GB DDR3-1600MHz RAM
1TB SATA3 7200RPM Hard Disk
BluRay Combo Drive(LG)
2 x ATI HD6970 2GB PCI-e in Crossfire configuration
Antec Nine Hundred Gaming Case
Thermaltake Tough Power XT 875W PSU

Now it comes time to install windows 7 professional, so I purchase a copy of the OEM version (because I'm stingy).

When I put the DVD in the drive it boots straight away and it comes up with a black screen that says "Windows is loading files........." . The bar on the screen loads and then it says "Starting Windows", after that a blue screen with some leaves and what looks like a very small bird appears in what I am assuming is meant to be the start of the windows 7 professional setup screen, however nothing comes up and after a while (5 minutes or so) my computer restarts and it's groundhog day (has been doing it for the last 3 hours).

Can anyone help me?

Hi I recently built a system, bought all the parts on newegg, put it all together, and everything starts up fine, seems really smooth. Unfortunately when I try to install vista, it BSOD's on me before I can even get to any startup screen. It goes to the windows loading files part, then on the next teal blue screen it bsod's. I bought a new sound system along with all the other components and it included a sub that warns to keep it away from PC's etc. Unfortunately they put the boxes right next to each other outside my door, is there any chance it could have fried both my HD's? I've tried everything I can think of, installing with just 1 HD (tried both), tried with 1 stick of ram (tried both), I just can't think of what else it could be. I'm pretty sure everything is compatible or else I wouldn't even get this far, but I'll list my system.

Also tried to install windows xp as a last resort, I get a bsod during installation on that (right at the end, finalizing installation step) and eventually I even got it installed, but then it bsod right at the end. When I restarted I even got to a mainscreen kinda, where it told me it was changing my resolution, it changed it then I got an error about Windows media player. Tried repairing the install and it said couldn't copy file wmp.dll along with about 30 other files. I'm just at a loss and really frustrated here. Anyway, here is the system.

A:BSOD installing Vista on a brand new comp

Hi -

I am concerned about the formatting of the drive(s).

Re-format the HDD with KillDisk then try the Vista installation again. Leave XP out of this for now.

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Be sure to change the BIOS firing order so the DVD is 1st.

If you get another BSOD, get at least the 1st 2 sets of numbers. Any digits to the right of the "0x" that are zeroes are assumed. So, if the code is

0x0000008e -- this is equal to 0x8e or 8e

Try to get the "8e" or whatever the number is from the 1st and 2nd set of numbers of the bugcheck

A:Trouble installing WinXP pro on brand new drive

Is that an actual XP Pro CD, and is it XP original or XP SP1?

If you've installed a new hard drive, it needs to be formatted before you can install XP Pro in it.

The XP Pro CD does all the work - if that's what you have.
