Disappearing Icons, Computer Crashes, BSOD, computer unusable

Q: Disappearing Icons, Computer Crashes, BSOD, computer unusable

I have been having a long running problem with my computer. It started out as a lack of internet access which turned out tI o be a bad virus. I fixed that problem by doing a complete reformat of my system. I thought that that would fix the problem and it did for a bit.

After a week or so I started having BSOD. I went to a computer shop and we went to work on the issue. The BSOD's were showing that there was an error with my sata connection. I replaced the cables. The problem kept happening, so I replaced the motherboard and hard drive with a complete reformat again. Then I continued to have the same issues which included crashes, disappearing icons, weird error messages (x86 errors) and once in a while a BSOD. The BSOD's all say there's still an error with the sata connection.

I then decided to replace the power supply and upgraded to an evga 1300 watt. I replaced my case as well to a bigger one. I even replaced the ram sticks That seemed to fix the problems for a while and the BSOD's became very rare, but after a lot of use the weird error messages became very common. I really can't use the computer any more. I'm typing this on my laptop.

The computer shop I go to say's this is probably a hardware issue. They can't seem to figure it out. I've had it in multiple times. This is a nightmare for a computer owner. I have replaced virtually all the parts and my computer is still utterly unusable. The only program I installed since the last reformat was Origin, Steam, Office.

The only parts I have yet to replace are the Processor and the Graphics Card.

Please help. I really don't know what else to do.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Disappearing Icons, Computer Crashes, BSOD, computer unusable

Holy.....
uh...
Why don't you just buy a new one! WOW.. Sorry..
Well, you SHOULDN'T have played with drivers...That is what's up.
Tried re-formatting AFTER doing those changes?
That computer shop owner though...I don't know what to say.
1) try reformatting to a version that is supported by the bios..(Check if it supports x64)...(fully ready)
2) post every error you get and attempt to find solution to each one. (Getting tired)
3) Can you mention WHEN did certain errors happen? before...after changing Processor and Graphic Card? (Getting worried)
4) Try lots of thing on the web. (hope time)
5) Revert back to the old virtual stuff. (shameful return)
6) take off the good pieces and attempt to use it on another computer or sell it. (Hopeless)

I have been having a problem with icons disappearing off of the desktop, and then the computer crashing. This only happens after the computer has been running for about 5 days. The first thing I almost always do when I get on my computer is click on Internet Explorer. This is when I will get error messages such as "not enough quota to process this command" or "out of memory". I know it is not the memory, as I am only using about 10% of the hard drive. Then if I click on somethiing else to see if it works, I begin to notice fewer things on my desktop. If I go to shut down right away, I can restart the computer and all is fine for a few days. If I mess around and try to open other programs, eventually I will be left with only 3 or 4 incons on the desktop, and when I click the start menu it comes up blank, and I have to manually shut down the computer. This always happens when I have been away from the computer for a while. If I am on the computer working, it runs fine. The problem starts when I am off of it for a period of time, and begins with my first mouse click. I posted messages in the security section, and have had some help analyzing my system. The techs there see nothing wrong with anything on my system, and referred me to this forum. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Hello,

Here's whats been going on
-Sophos picked up a couple of viruses here and there (I'm sorry I don't have their names). Upon start up I started getting an error message that systems32/rundll32.exe failed to intilize (sp?) properly. After I ran a full scan with Sophos and deleted everything it found the error stopped appearing but was replaced by the same error concerning systems32/ntdevice.
-I downloaded Malwarebytes, it found stuff, I deleted them. Nothing comes up on Malwarebytes anymore, be it regular mode or safe mode. Every once in awhile I'll get something from either of them, usually involving my temp folder.
-I started getting constant warnings that my virtual memory was too low
-I have to restart my computer about twice a day now. All of the graphics go blank in mozilla and then it eventually crashes. Sometimes I get a plug in error, sometimes no error at all. I'll restart and it will crash again within a few minutes (sometimes immediately). It is not just mozilla that is crashing - basically nothing on the computer works. (ex Itunes, pdf files...).
-Around the time it starts acting up the PF Usage will be through the roof. Something like 7.5 GB. Upon restart it will be low and stays low even if I open up tons of programs (I tried to make it crash earlier today following a restart and was unable to. And I opened everything I could.) But the longer the computer runs, the higher the PF usage is.

I have just installed Office 2003 on a new laptop (after being fed up with Office 2007 "improvements") and have a problem with Excel which existed as well with Office 2007 (thus - I think somehow Vista may be causing this - but who knows).

Problem: Right click menu in excel only briefly (millisecond) flashes when I right click, making it unusble. I do not have any problem with right click menu in other programs (word, powerpoint, quicken, etc...) - only excel - so likely not a mouse problem (the same disappearing act happens with my touchpad right click as well as with my Logitech wireless mouse right click).

Any ideas to solve this? It really hampers my use of excel.

Thanks-

Hi all,

I just finished my first build this last saturday, and everything seemed to be going fine. Until about the time windows updates started installing, including service pack 1. Now I'm getting fairly frequent crashes, that force my computer to restart, or even BSOD now. Most notably, the crashes occur around start up, right after I login to windows. The mouse pointer can still move, but it can't click on anything, and my comps busy light stays lit, forcing me to restart manually. Crashes have occured when starting StarCraft II or even starting up firefox. Please help me if you can, this is becoming a real pain in the... rear.
My Build:
i5-3570k
ASUS sabertooth z77 MoBo
Corsair Force GT 120 SSD
WDC 500 GB HDD
ASUS HD 7850 CUII
8 gb (4x2) corsair low profile vengence RAM
LEPA 700W gold cert psu
Clean install of windows 7 pro on the SSD

I'm trying to attach the .dmp files but for some reason they don't show up when searching to upload them... I guess I need help posting these too...

Update: .DMP files below. I also ran the windows RAM check last night, and no issues were found.

This might work(?). Please let me know if you have any questions, I'll be checking this page as much as I can at work. (off at 6)

Now I have a new kind of error, that makes my pc crash and gives me a blue screen. This occurs randomly, It has happened while I was not around the pc, when I was playing on it, or when I was watching a movie. I do not have a lot of computing experience, but I'll try to do what you guys suggest.

Hi all,

This is my first time posting, so I'll try to include all relevant information and be as detailed as possible. Please let me know if I need to include anything else.

I recently bought a Gateway SX2802-03 from J&R around two months ago. A short while after I bought it, I began to notice random BSODs.

The process would begin like this - I would typically start to notice it as I was watching a streaming video online, or if I was playing a game with audio. The audio would gradually begin to deteriorate (clicks & buzzes, here and there, graduating up to very harsh, noisy static-y sounds). My cursor would then move jerkily across the screen when I would move it with the mouse. In general, I would notice the various programs taking longer to open or do anything until my whole computer crashed.

When I called Gateway tech support, they diagnosed it as a corrupted file that needed to be fixed by re-installing windows. I did this over the weekend, and roughly two days after doing so, I had my first BSOD, the details of which were the same as the ones before the restore.

I'm including the information presented for the last BSOD (this morning), as well as the previous two dmp files. Not sure if this is relevant, but I had the first crash yesterday morning...I continued to run my computer all day, and did not experience another. This morning, I had my computer up for around an hour when I had the second crash.

My security system is PC Tools Antivirus + Spyware.

I am unable to run dds or gmer before my computer crashes. My computer seems to be less and less usable by the hour. Today I havn't been able to log in for a full 2 minutes without it crashing.
Symptoms

This is what the screen shows when I force it to boot from cd (and the cd is working and in the cd drive)

The computer takes a while to start up, even thought it has a core2quad @2.4 and 2g ram
The computer frequently bluescreens and restarts.
The computer refuses to boot from cd

At this point I'll do anything to make the computer usable...

so, me being a complete idiot decided to go months without scanning for viruses.
scanned today after noticing my computer being exceptionally slow, and multiple programs being corrupted or the files missing.
there were 13 malicious items, and 5 nonmalicious items (they were all PUPs)
there were 3 that stood out the most of the 13 malicious ones (most were stolen.data files and malware.traces)

I did research on each of these. after panicking a little about all the super private information.. heh i have on my laptop, i attempted to remove them with my AV.
this seemed to have fixed many of the problems i was having, such as slowness, certain programs not running, and random crashing. however, the main #1 thing i use my computer for is skype.
skype had been acting up, giving me errors before i removed the viruses. after multiple restarts whcih took 10 minutes each, i got it working.
after cleaning out the viruses, i restarted my computer per instruction. when i got back on, it all seemed normal. until i tried to start skype.
each and every time i open skype, type in my username, and sign in, it'll say "signing in..." and then just stop, and kick me to the sign in page.
theres absolutely NO error message. ill keep trying, same thing. ill restart skype, same thing. nothing works. tried different accounts, those do the same thing.
i desperately need to get back into skype.

Hi All,

I need help.
My computer is basically useless now with BSOD every 5-15min constantly.
And this all started after I did the dreadful Anniversary Update.

In the mist of all the problems I got desperate and did a full clean/format install of windows 10 using the latest ISO that is available on their website which obviously did not work

Here is another post where I started to ask for help and it all went nuts for some reference:

Attached are some of the latest BSOD as well (Including the one that happened while writing this post!!)

I've tried doing a system restore but as soon as win 7 completes it's updates after the restore the problem persists.

I've also tried doing a repair, but the windows installation CD supplied by the store with the computer doesn't have the repair option for some reason when booting from it.

attached is the following support data in a zip file:
the contents of my Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 folder
the performance manager report
an Everest report of my system stats
A bluescreenview report of the crashes (it claims the culprit is the ntoskrnl driver).

Please HELP... what can I do?

i am working on an XP PC and it seems to run ok most of the time. but, when i dialup, the computer crashes to a blue screen of death which references HSP_DP.sys.

i have swapped out the modem with a known good modem and this problem continues.

i have noticed that the video adapter has some issues and i tend to believe that these issues are causing some sort of conflict that is causing the computer to crash when dialing up.
among the issues i have noticed....
in device manager, it says the display adapter can't be started....but it IS started. AND... when i look at the display properties, the video adapter is capable of 32-bit, but under advanced>adapter, the adapter name, vender etc isn't listed.

this PC is some sort of homebuilt job with SiS integrated components. i recently upgraded this machine from xp home to xp pro and during the upgrade, i was asked for the original disk for the display drivers. i opted to skip that part and installed downloaded drivers after the upgrade.

is it possible to go in the registry and delete the enum listing under local_machine, like with 98/me, and let the system find and reinstall all the drivers again?

or is there something else i should try first.

much thanks

I haven't figured out if it's a graphical error or not, because if it is, might it be a good idea to install a slightly older version of my videocard driver?

I have been having an issue with my computer crashing for about a year now. I purchased this Cyberpower computer last year, only hardware changes I made was a OCZ Vertex 2 80GB SSD I used for OS(Windows 7) and I added a SB X-FI sound card.

So I have intermitten problems with the computer screen turning black and the computer restarting. Mostly just from browsing the web, though playing a game will bring about the problem much sooner. Sometimes it will occur when watching a movie, but not as much as a game.

Steps I have taken:
I tried disconnecting the SSD drive and just running the computer off HDD that came stock. SSD drive had latest firmware(1.37) flashed to it and was running in ACHI(both in BIOS and reggedit). The computer currently is in IDE and just has the HDD plugged in.
I've updated the drivers on the video card.
Tried different virus protection programs(currently using avast)
Tried just running the stock sound card. Currently have the Sound Blaster card in with the onboard disabled in BIOS.
I ran Memtest, looked fine.
Cleaned out the inside, had a repair shop test the PSU and he said it was fine. He also said the temps looked fine.
I disabled the automatic restart in advanced settings, though I never really get a chance to see the BSOD error message, it either doesnt show it flashes for like 5 seconds on the rare occasion I see it at all.

I just ran Diablo 3 after not having any issues after updating the video card driver. It played through the opening vide... Read more

A:New Computer Random Crashes BSOD

Only 33 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 46 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have a Belkin Wireless USB network adapter:

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard! I STRONGLY suggest not using controller drivers older than mid-2012 with SSD's.
- Slow the memory (RAM... Read more

Hello
I have a problem with ati driver it happens when i go to start-search and the new problem is when i try to send a mail with attachment
The blue screen that comes up says the following......
The device driver got stuck in a infinite loop. This usually indicates problems with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
ati2dvag
Beginning dump of physical memory
i try uninstalling driver and it happens again
i hope someone can help thanks in advance

A:Ati2dvag, computer crashes, BSOD

I suggest doing the following...

1. Download Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper (both have free versions; make sure the version will work with your OS) to your desktop screen and install.

2. Download the latest diver(s) for your video card but don't install them.

3. Uninstall your video card drivers and reboot your PC into Safe Mode. Run Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper but ONLY for the video card drivers. I had someone use it on their chipset drivers! If it doesn't find any video card drivers that is quite okay; just leave all other drivers alone.

4. Reboot and install new video card drivers.

It looks as though your hard drive is dying.
Code:

This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard

/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

I am not sure if the updated sound card drivers he installed were compatable with windows 7 which is why i am fairly sure that this is the problem but i am not 100% on this i asked him for a zip of his minidump files and will add them to this post as well as two pictures of the two bsod errors he has recieved. These bluescreens happen fairly randomly as well and sometimes dont happen for a hour or two.
Thanks in advance for any help on this it will be tough for me to try and talk him through this heh.

There are 15 DMP files that is going to take a while. I am doing them now.

Also, it would be easier if we could communicate with your friend (if possible) because it is more efficient.

A:MY computer crashes frequently BSOD

Please navigate to the C:\Windows\Minidump folder, zip up the contents, and upload/attach them to your next post.

Please include a description of when the crashes happen and what you're usually doing when they happen. Also, please think about things that have happened recently with the computer that may have not seemed "quite right" - and let us know what they were.

Also, as you have time, please generate these 2 reports, zip them up and upload the .zip file with your next post
- go to Start and type in "perfmon /report" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Save the report as an .html file
- go to Start and type in "msinfo32" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Save the report as an .nfo file

Finally, after all this is done, take your time and start going through this list on my blog: BSOD troubleshooting preliminaries - Vox

Hi,

I seemed to have picked up something. The computer is unusable (except in safe mode) due to being extremely slow, things unable to be opened, rebooting etc. It also seems to prevent Avast from being opened.

It is a Toshiba laptop, running Windows 7.

I have run the scans as below.

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

Kevin

A:Computer unusable - seems to be malware

I have managed to log on using a clean boot. I also tested by reactivating half of the services and then noticed that when it logged in Avast had been deactivated automatically.

I have now run HJT from within the clean boot rather than safe mode.

Logs below.

Thanks for any help.

1. Download & Save this file to Desktop -> http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi!

As of late, my computer has been acting up. It has been extremely slow on startup and will not run certain programs without crashing. (For example, Photoshop worked until about a week ago. Now it just crashes and freezes the computer)
In addition, I'm getting weird "Bluetooth" popups that do not look official by any means. (Misspellings, poor grammar, etc.)

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
~Park

My computer has suddenly gone from running fine to running so slowly it is unusable. I suspect that I'm infected with something but I haven't had any luck trying to find out what it is.

I can boot to Safe Mode and the machine runs fine. From there I ran ComboFix a couple times but that didn't help. I can post the log file if needed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott (not)

A:Computer so slow it is unusable

Updates on this:
I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes (in SafeMode) but it came back clean.

I now have the machine up and running in normal mode but it is still extremely slow. When I try to open any application from the Start menu, it doesn't load at all. I am however able to run Task Manager and I can see all the processes that are running. I've sorted the list by Memory Usage and run some searches on the processes that are using the most but nothing has turned out to be a virus.

I suspected that my problem was with Comodo, but I was able to shut that down and the problem persists. However I have noticed that cmdagent.exe is still running.

Any suggestions?

When browsing a site, I accidentally agreed to download a file called "MediaTubeCodec" via an activeX popup on my screen. As it was downloading I went to click "cancel" in the "downloads" window, but right as I did the download finished and "cancel" turned to "open". The program insalled itself and dissapeared. I was hoping it was nothing, but shortly after I started recieving those dreaded pop-ups advertising a fake virus-protection program called System Defender. I was then notified that my "automatic updates" for Windows security stuff had been turned off.

I was looking at my McAfee options and wondering why McAfee hadn't caught anything when my desktop flickered, my icons re-arranged themselves and my wallpaper was replaced with a red background with a large bloody biohazard sign and the words, "Download privacy protection software now". To make things worse, the background is somehow a giant button, so if I click ANYWHERE on my desktop, IE pops up and takes me to the fake-virus protection site. My clock has been replaced with a thing that says "VIRUS ALERT".

I decided not to wait around for McAfee to do a full scan and went to do a System Restore, but the control panel, show-all programs tab, My Computer, and many other components of the start menu are missing. Hitting ctrl+alt+del gives me a message that says "the task manager has been disabled by the administrator".

A:MediaTubeCodec- now computer is almost unusable

Bump

Please, I really need help.

I managed to get rid of the background button (there was an invisible "x" button at the top right) but I still cannot access the task manager, my computer and so many other things.
