Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

Q: Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

I have one of the newer model Dell Inspirion laptops. How do I turn off the light that accompanies the power button and the charge light on the front. I'm able to turn off my backlit keyboard, but these two other lights are quite bright and annoying when I'm trying to play movies in a dark room.

Preferred Solution: Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is the exact system model?
The power led and the leds on front are also used as diagnostic indicators. If there is any hardware issue on the machine, these leds help isolate the source of the issue. Hence, there is no way to disable the leds from turning on, as they would be connected to a cable soldered to the motherboard.
Download the service manual / specifications for a better understanding of the machine - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download it from the Manual section.

RFrom yesterday my laptop stop charging when laptop is power on..... Though It charges when Power is off. I checked the Bios AC adapter type is None. I removed the battery and try to start the laptop only with AC adapter connected but it is not starting ..... What might be the problem. Charger or motherboard or any thing else...... Please help me

A:Dell Inspiron 14R SE charging only when laptop power is off

In descending order of probability:
Replace the AC adapter first.  Use a Dell OEM AC adapter ONLY - - NOT a third party adapter.
If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC power jack in the system:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter is unknown, the battery will not charge.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hi can you help me .

My laptop went off while I was playing a game on it.
There is no power light or any other lights coming on. I tried replacing power jack but this has not
helped. I think it could be the motherboard, can you tell me what compatible motherboards i could use.

A:dell inspiron 15r se Service tag . No power no led lights.

It's an Inspiron 7520 with discrete video - any board for that model with that video will work.  That said, putting $250-300 into a board (plus labor) into a 4-year old system makes for a questionable economic choice -- you are probably better off putting that money toward a new system.

Hello everyone. I'm currently working on a friend's Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 running Windows 8. The LEDs on the front (Status, Loading, Battery, WiFi) are all off, even when battery is installed, and AC adapter is plugged in.

I've checked his AC Adapter with a multimeter, and it shows it's giving off the correct amount of power. I've also tried a working charger from another computer, and it's still not being recognized. I did a bit of troubleshooting before taking it apart, thinking it would be the laptop's DC Jack, so I went and replaced that, only to find it still is acting up. I even tried to take the battery out, and plug it in just with the AC Adapter, but no luck.

Now I did get it to power up once (with the battery installed) for a few seconds, with the message, "this battery is temporarily disabled" as shown in this thread. I powered it down, but it refuses to power back up again. I don't want to say it's a bad motherboard, but that's what I'm starting to believe it is. Has anyone else experienced this before?

HelloI have a Dell Inspiron 3542 laptopwhen it is plugged into the charger, I have no power no LED indicator nothing ... just components that heat up in the motherboard.Maybe I have a short circuit in the motherboard.I disassembled my laptop. I downloaded the schematic: Dell Inspiron 15-3542 Wistron Cedar 13269-1 FX3MC.Well, when I plugged the laptop into the charger, the PU4503 IC (TPS51225RUKR-GP) heats up too much (soo hot), and PL4501 and PL4502 warm up a bit.please help me to find the shortcut.Thank you .

A:Dell Inspiron 15 3542 i3 no power no charging no led !!!!!

You've isolated it to a bad mainboard - which needs to be replaced.  Unless you've got several thousand dollars' worth of test/repair equipment handy,  this is a replacement - not a repair.
If you do have such equipment, and the troubleshooting skills - you can try a repair.

I have had my Dell laptop for almost two years now. I replaced the battery before the warranty expired (1 year?). The battery was working fine, but I was starting to have to jerry-rig the angle of the power cord in the socket to charge the battery. I purchased a knock-off AC adapter replacement. I started getting error messages almost immediately when booting up that cord might not be compatible with the laptop. As it was working, I didn't worry about it. The power light start flashing in a particular pattern then, which it has been doing for months (three fast orange flashes and one long white flash). Historically, a white light has meant "charged" and an orange light has meant low power. The AC adapter became increasingly less efficient in charging the battery until it ceased to charge it at all. I purchased the Dell AC adapter recommended for the newest version of my laptop model. There was no noticeable change. (I understand from Dell that the problem may have been that I purchased a 90W adapter, compatible with newer versions of this model, but that I should have purchased a 65W adapter as my laptop is older.) I returned that adapter to Dell and then purchased a re-furbished Dell 65W AC adapter through Amazon. Again, no noticeable change. The battery is taking absolutely no charge from these cords. As I remove the power cord from the socket, the computer instantly shuts down.

When I hover over the battery icon, it says the battery is 0% charged and that ... Read more

The battery charging light is flashing orange and green which according to the helpfile means that 'the battery is too hot to start charging'. I have switched the machine off for half an hour - it is definitely cold, but this light continues to flash and the battery will not charge. The laptop is about 8 months old and battery use has been fairly light.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

A:Dell Inspiron Laptop - battery not charging.

it sounds like a defective battery. if the laptop is only about 8 months old then it should still be under warranty. you should contact dell about the problem and get a replacement battery.

I've recently had a few problems with my Dell Inspiron Laptop. It is plugged in to the AC adapter, but when I check the battery status I get a message saying '4% available (plugged in, not charging)'. This means that I cannot work on my laptop unless it is plugged in. The battery light on my laptop flickers a dim blue colour. I also don't want to buy a new battery for it to not work in my laptop either.

It also seems to get really hot when it is plugged in, and occasionally it will switch off unexpectedly. I'm guessing the reason the battery won't charge may be something to do with the motherboard and over-heating.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem?
Probably my own fault for buying a Dell...Haha!

I have had my Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop since late 2012. It has been a great computer, and although I have recently upgraded to a new Dell laptop, I still use my 5520 for writing and entertainment purposes. The only reason I upgraded at all was because I had a hard drive go bad and didn't realize that it was only the hard drive at the time. I restored the computer with a different version of Windows 7 after I replaced the drive and everything is working great - except the battery charging. It is sporadic. What happens is I plug in the charging cord at times, the computer detects it for a second or two, and then it no longer charges. I ran a complete PC health check and it showed everything is working properly and the battery is healthy, but it did not detect it being plugged in even when it was. I also flashed the BIOS, and it had no real affect on the charging issue. WHAT DID WORK was shutting down the computer, removing the battery, and pressing the power button for 30 seconds and reinstalling the battery. After I do that, it does detect the charging cord is connected and the battery charges properly - but only for a week or two, and then I usually have to do it all over again. Any thoughts? Is my battery going? Charging cord? Any other thoughts? It's not a HUGE deal that this is happening. I love this computer. If I can correct the problem, I will. Thanks!

Do i need to change my battery or my problem is something else?
Is the message "battery is performing normally" fake?

A:Dell Laptop Inspiron N5110 Charging Extremely Slow

As long as the AC adapter is recognized and the battery does charge, it's a batter on its way out due to old age.  Four years is a good long run for a battery - if you must use the system on battery, it's time for a new one.

I shut down my laptop the other day...while it was shutting down I closed the lid and placed it in my bag(the battery was around 35 maybe)... Charged my iPhone while the laptop was off and after some time the charging stopped. I ignored this and after sometime tried to turn on the laptop ... It wouldn't turn on... No red lights for low battery no display... I plugged in the laptop ... No lights ... Tried reseating the ram without any luck ... Since it's inspiron 15z 5523 Ultrabook from late 2012 I cannot go down to the battery easily. The laptop has never been opened.except for changing ram that too 2 years ago

A:Inspiron 15z 5523 Ultrabook not turning on, Not Charging,No lights,No sound

Unplug the system, disconnect the battery (remove the base cover to access it), and hold the power button for 30 sec.
Verify that the LED on the adapter or DC plug is ON before you continue.  If it's not, the adapter is bad and will need to be replaced.
Remove and reinstall both memory modules.
Power on on AC only with the battery disconnected.  If it will but won't with the battery in place, the battery is bad;  replace it.
If the system still won't power up, replace the mainboard.

Currently have a Lenovo W530 that won't turn on. Right before the laptop "died" I was doing work and it was plugged in and then it suddenly just turned off. When I plug the laptop in the charging indicator light does not turn on (nor do any lights). Here is what I've attempted:Removed the battery and unplug from power and hold the power button for a minute to dissipate any charge that may remain. Then I just plug in the charger and try to turn the laptop back onPurchased a new battery chargerIn both cases nothing has changed, it seems like the laptop is just dead. My next attempt would be to replace the CMOS battery but I feel like I should be getting some sort of response from the charge being plugged in, regardless whether or not it needs a new CMOS battery. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to make sure that I need to send this computer back. Took out of the box...plugged in the ac adaptor and allowed it to charge for a few hours. Lights on the adaptor and the charging indicator at the front of the laptop lit up so it appeared to be charging. I attempted to turn on and nothing happened. I removed the battery and completed a 30 second reset that I found online but still nothing. I've made sure everything is plugged in correctly as well. This morning I plugged it in to give it one last shot and now the charging indicator on the laptop does not light up. Any ideas? Lost cause? The description for this computer states that the USB-C thunderbolt port is a ?on cord solution? for data transfer, video transfer, and power. Imagine my surprise when I docked it and got an error message that the port doesn?t accept power and to plug in my power adapter. I am hoping this is a temporary issue that will be fixed with a bios update and not an issue of false advertising and poor utilization of a fantastic technology. Can someone from Dell advise if this will be fixed in a future bios update or if it?s infact a hardware design flaw?

A:Power through USB-c on Dell Inspiron 15 7577 gaming laptop

Hopefully a Dell rep can confirm, but sadly, I think this is going to turn out to be incorrect marketing material and not a hardware bug that will be correctable with a BIOS update. There's no way something like that would still exist as a bug, but if the port isn't wired to allow charging the system, no BIOS update will fix that.Looking at the product page for this system (screenshot immediately below), the text block above the system images mentions "Power Delivery", which typically does mean the ability to charge the system over USB-C (since systems typically don't provide large amounts of power to attached devices via USB Power Delivery), but the description of the USB-C port below the system image doesn't mention accepting power.  Compare that to the image of the XPS 15 (farther below), where Power In is explicitly stated.  This is also found on other systems that can charge over USB-C.

I have an Inspiron 1545 circa 3 years of age.  This morning it did not power on, at all.  The battery life is great in that it doesn't need to be constantly plugged into a charger and it always switches on (except this time).  I connected it to the mains however, and still nothing.  Not even the light to indicate that it's plugged into the mains came on. I'm confident it's nothing to do with the charger or mains.

I'm just confused how I was using it 9 hours prior without any problems, shut it down and went to bed and then this morning it's dead, completely dead.  Can anyone offer any assistance please??

Thanks in advance.

Hi ak47bwood,
Welcome to the Community,
Try to release flea power and see if that helps. To release flea power disconnect the charger, remove the battery and press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds(with battery and charger disconnected). Now put back the battery and reconnect the charger  and turn on the system.
If this does not work, would like to ask you few question to find out the problem.
Does the charger light ( light on the charger brick) come on when its plugged in to the main power outlet?
Have you tried different power outlet?
If the charger light comes on,does it stay on when its plugged in to the system?
What is the status of the light on the power button of the system?
Please post back for further help.
Thank You,

I am new to this site. I hope I may eventually be able to contribute something as well.
A friend gave me a dead laptop that she thought might be repairable.

When I plug in my Dell Inspiron to the AC outlet, the battery charging light comes on. That's it. Nothing else comes on. The power light does not come on. When I turn it on, some lights dimly flicker, but that's it. No whirring of the hard drive. Nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong.

*I did research this a little before posting this, I don't believe it's the power receptacle, since the led for the battery comes on, seems like power is flowing through the jack, it's just that nothing else works.*

*I tried removing the battery, and holding the pwer on for 30 secs, etc, then reinstalling the battery, but that didn't do anything.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

A:Dell Inspiron 5040N AC adapter Lost Power once plugged into Laptop

Hi RAYB871,
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
Three components cause this issue, in this order:
Adapter - you have already tested another adapter, so ruled out.
DC Port - the port that holds the adapter in, might be shorted - you would need this part - http://bit.ly/2bQ3HoP
Motherboard - I would primarily suspect this part, if the dc port does not fix the issue, then it is the motherboard that has failed and needs to be replaced.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ
Personally, I would suggest, you invest your money on a new machine than to repair this old machine. However, it is your discretion.

I couldn't get pass the log on screen so i held down the power button but it would not turn off so i took out the battery. I put the battery back in and left the laptop alone till i got home. I thought that the problem with the screen was a wire came loose or something of that nature so i took apart the screen and made sure everything was plugged in. I put it back together and put the battery back in and went to turn it on to see if the screen problem was resolved and it wouldn't boot or anything. I don't get any beeps, fans, or lights that turn on. HELP!?!?!?!

Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds.
Connect the AC Adapter back and check if the system is working fine.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

So i have a dell inspiron 15 3521, about a year ago, it started turning on, but wouldn't charge. Then, the battery completely died and it wouldn't turn on. Also, when i plugged the charger in, the light on the charger unit turned on then off. I then proceeded to buy a new battery and charging unit. It turned on perfectly and worked well, but the battery wouldnt charge, and when the battery's charge was all out, it would start up, show the windows loading screen for 30-60 seconds and then mysteriously power off. (Same result with battery+charger in) When i tried turning it on with just the charger in, the front indicator lights would turn on for a few seconds, then turn back off. I tried getting rid of the static built up by pressing the power button down for 30 seconds, but no progress. I know that the outlet is working perfectly, the battery works well, just doesnt have a charge, and has been cleaned. I think the problem is either with the laptop not accepting power (for lack of better words) or the charger not producing enough power. All help is appreciated, and needed... Thank you! :)

Hi, I'm new to the forums so I'm not sure if this is in the right section but on my old Dell Inspiron 8600 the battey led light keeps flashing orange 4 times followed by a green light. I've read that this is caused by a faulty battery cell. However, since this model is so old it would be a waste of money to buy a new battery. Is there a registry fix or what not that will sort out this problem or will I have to shove my battery in the fridge (an answer to someone else's post on another forum)? Thanks

So Dell made a really terrible decision.  They have a transparent strip in the power button for an LED light to indicate if the power is on.  A power indicator is a given in any laptop, no matter how cheap it is.  However, Dell in all of it's genius decided to not include an LED bulb on laptops up to the Inspiron 7000 Series, despite leaving a transparent slot for it.  Seriously, what happened to this brand?!?  Do children make these laptops now?
I want to fix this, as my laptop is no longer returnable and a power indicator is absolutely necessary.  So the only thing I can think of is replacing it with one from the 7000 Series somehow (with some help probably).
This is a Dell Inspiron 5559.  I also have an Inspiron 5547.  Not sure which exact 7000 model I should get the part for...
Are they compatible?
Is there an easier way? Like how Fn+H turns on the hard drive indicator?

A:Can I replace a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series power board with a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series power board?

The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies.  The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

Basically, I bought a new Thermaltake case and the front panel wires (5) are labeled power sw, reset sw, HDD led, power led +, and power led -. On many motherboards the connectors on the mobo are conveniently labeled to make attaching them a breeze. Unfortunately, this is not the case on the mobo that came with my Dell inspiron i purchased last year. It is labeled LEDH1 and has no hints in the Dell manual as to what is what.  This is driving me crazy.
The mobo DPN is 088DT1 but I can't find its manual.
Here's a picture of closeups of my mobo connectors, and my case connection cables.

I have a Latitude e5540 that doesn't turn on (at least not easily). But when it does turn on, it can stay on for weeks/months as long as it stays in sleep mode. This has happened three times now. If I shut down or reboot the computer, it doesn't turn on again -- or at least it's very difficult to get it on and it seems to randomly correct itself and turn back on.
Here are the symptoms when it doesn't boot up:

Screen is blank.
The Power light on the power button and edge of laptop are both solid white, no other lights on. Power light remains on as long as it's getting power from the battery or power cable. If I press the power button to turn it off, it sounds like it's going through a shutdown process of some sort -- not like windows shutting down, but it doesn't immediately turn off. The fans will spin up for a few seconds, then it will power off after another few seconds.
When power button is pressed, the fans turn on momentarily then spin down after a second. But they will randomly turn back on for a few seconds here and there as long as the power remains on.
HDD sounds like it's on. HDD light on the edge of the laptop is off.

Troubleshooting so far with no noticeable difference:

Removed the battery and power cable, held power button to drain residual power and tried to connect just the power cable and turn it on. Didn't work.
Connected to an external monitor via HDMI to TV -- once the laptop powers on, the TV detects a new source, but... Read more

Make & Model : Dell Inspiron 1545

Problem : Unit does not charge reliably. Green LED on transformer unit does
not light up each time it connected to mains and laptop.

The green light flashes on and off on the charger when connected to the mains and laptop.

When the cable is plugged onto the ac adapter, the green light should always come on, regardless whether it is plugged onto the laptop or not.

The fact that the green light does not come on without it being plugged onto the laptop, tells me that the charger has gone and needs to be replaced!

I took out the battery and left the ac adapter plugged in, but it still would not power on, so I know that the problem is not with the battery because the laptop would have started to work!

I also took out the battery and left it without the ac adapter plugged in, pressed and held the power button down for 20 seconds, so the RAM gets cleared to perform a hardware reset, but that did not work either and it still did not power up, so I am also assuming that the system board or motherboard needs to be replaced!

Hi sergios,

Try to get your hands onto a spare AC adapter that's compatible with your computer and then test it on your computer. Please provide an update when you can, thank you.

I have a old Dell Inspiron N5050 which has suddenly stopped working and doesn't start. When I plug in the charger in the socket, the light is on but when I connect it to my laptop, the light goes off. I've tried other chargers but they also seem to experience the same problem. I've tried removing the battery ans starting it by doing the way you have suggested to others but it won't start. It doesn't even charge. What should I do?
