I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A:Need help with usb mass storage not working.

Hello ,

you need to rebuild your USB tree

try this

now what i you need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now scroll down to your (USB Device Tree) and uninstall all that it is shown / then shut your sysem down compleatly then unplug all (USB Devices) then rebot your system 2 to 3 times

this will cause Windows to rebuild the (USB Device Treee & Drivers)

now try hooking up your (USB Devices) and see if they work properly

If you have a USB mouse & keyboard then you need to switch over to PS/2 to perform these steps

let me know how it works

The Microsoft Update site detects that I have whatever uses/needs this device driver (Windows 98 SE):

Promise Technology - Storage
49 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
Promise Technology Scsiadapter Driver Version 2.0.0.28

In my device manager next to Other Devices, I see the yellow question mark. Under Other Devices, there is a yellow question mark, with a yellow exclamation point over it, and says: PCI Mass Storage Controller.

I thought I was familiar with all the actual devices, but I don't know what this is, and the explanations I'm finding on Google don't make any sense to me at all.

I have noticed the Update site listing and the device manager's yellow symbols for many months. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I recently bought a fairly high spec refurbished computer from a school clearance sale and I am now wanting to use it to be the basis of a simple media center. The problem I am facing Is that it wont recognize my mass storage devices (memory sticks and an external HD) through the USB ports. It Knows they are there because it will show me the names but it wont install them automatically and brings up the 'Install New Hardware Wizard' I've tried using this but it will reach the end of the installation and then say Invalid data. I have checked with the drivers on my laptop and there are the same ones on the new PC.
I am aware that some schools deliberately block USB storage devices for a variety of reasons so I googled my problem. It came back telling me that to disable/Enable USB ms devices there is a simple registry tweak, to change the DWord "start" value to 4-disable or 3-enable which is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR,
However, when I checked in RegEdit there was no USBSTOR directory at all. I have many questions,
Does this directory exist as a default or is it something that is added for this tweak?
Is there another way of disabling the USB for hardware other than mouse and keyboard? If so how can it be reversed?
Thankyou

A:USB mass storage drives are not working

I just checked 2 of mine.
USBSEOR is there
Go to the Device Manager & see if the USB is listed & enabled.
If it is expand the listing, right click each [in turn] & uninstall them
Restart the unit to let them reinstall
when done try them.

Welcome!

I can't think of a solution off the top of my head, so this will be trial-and-error.

Okay, so you plug in the drive, and what happens? Does the drive work properly?

Then you want to remove the drive. You click Safely Remove Hardware, and then it gives the error?

At what point did you take the screenshot above?

A:Solved: USB mass storage devices not working

Is this on your Windows 98 computer? Windows 98, out of the box, won't use those devices like 2000/XP and newer because it does not ship with generic drivers (2000/XP do).

Check this out for a generic Mass Storage Device W98 driver. The site claims it will work with "most" USB devices.

Okay, here's the deal:

I have the following USB Mass Storage Devices, and none of them are working.

~SanDisk 6-in-1 Memory Card reader
~Memorex 512m flash drive
~Nikon 5700 Digital Camera
~Samsung Yepp T7z Music Player

I also have the following USB Devices that ARE working, which are not classified as Mass Storage Devices:

~Targus Wireless Laser Mouse (Descriptive, huh?)
~Sony Clié PEG-TJ25 (Palm OS 5.2)
~External HDD (Samsung 40G mounted on an external HDD kit, not detected or classified as Mass Storage, but as a physical hard drive)

These devices are installed on Windows XP Professional SP2. All Windows updates are installed. They worked properly until I bought a new mobo and CPU. (Ran repair from boot CD after installing them, just to be safe)

I'm probably forgetting some non-Mass Storage devices, but that doesn't matter. The point is that my Mass Storage devices don't work. They all work fine on another computer running the same OS.

I can go to the Device Manager and I can see them, it says they're working properly (It always says that, whether something is actually working or not)

So, here's where it gets wierd: I can go into Disk Management and I can SEE the devices plugged in, and there's no drive letter assigned. Okay, easy enough, just assign a drive letter. (In this case it's F, as it's not in use by anything else) So I go into My Computer, it still ain't there. Also, when I reboot the c... Read more

Getting the following error:
A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

USB does this for all flash drives and external hard drives. I've also found it giving me the same error to the Ricoh SD Card reader. The weird thing is my iphone is being recognized and gives me access to the 20 gigs of content on it.

Not sure what I may have done to do this, but I've updated usbstor.inf and usbstor.sys and thing has changed. I've changed the start setting in the bios to 0, 1, and 2 with no luck (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/581538-solution-usb-error-code-found.html). Net start usbstor says the service is already running but still not working.

Hi
I had read lots of post about backup files. But there is only one thing that I never had the chance of reading, and I’m interesting to know it.
I have in my computer an internal Mass Storage that performs the backup every day.
Mi question and doubt is the following:
Suppose that a file from the Operation System get corrupted, or a file from a program get corrupted ( for example Paint program does not work anymore ).
Did the backup stored this corrupted file rendering it impossible to fix ?
Or the backup keep the image of the Operation System out of corruption danger ?
How to do a Restore in this situation ?

Some while back I installed Acronis True Image Home 2012 on my Win7 64 bit PC. It is a backup solution that would have satisfied my backup requirements at the time. I immediately found a problem with the fact that it failed to recognise my network drive as a backup location. After days of communications with their support dept. and a couple of sessions of remote support they realised that the software was not happy about "empty" disk drives. I have a built in multi-port card reader and also have card readers built into the monitor. They show as disk drives in "My Computer" even when there are no cards in the slots. The option in Windows to "hide empty drives" didn't cure the problem.

They eventually sent me a patch that cured the network drive recognition problem but left me with the problem that my PC no longer recognises any USB mass storage device or any memory card plugged into either of the card readers. I didn't realise I had this new problem for some time as I don't use USB disk drives. It's not just USB attached devices that are not recognised, it also won't recognise firewire disks either. I have tried un-installing the Acronis software but it doesn't remove the errant driver(s).

I've tried removing the devices and rebooting to force an update and I've tried scanning for new drivers without success. The PC tells me I have the latest drivers installed.

I have now found the 2 errant drivers and remove... Read more

Do you here any sound when you plug it in? Like the USB connection sound, but slightly different?

If not, then worst case scenario is it might have died. Happened to mine a couple of months ago. They are fragile and can get zapped easily with things like an ESD.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.

Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

If I have lots of files (more than 70) on a DVD-RW. Windows takes ages to read the disk and be ready to access the files.

Is there an optimum way of doing this that makes Windows happier?

I update the files fairly regularly.

I do have DVD buring software. (In any case, if I use Windows to update the disk, it finalises the disk.)

I remember with earlier versions of Windows using a UDF reader, and then there was no speed problem.

A:Using DVD-RWs for mass storage

I am not sure I understand what yu are asking. I think you are asking about using DVDs for backups. If that is correct, I would suggest investing in an external hard drive. They are relatively cheap right now and all of the information is in one place. I have 4 externals and use them daily. Redundancy of backups is the key. esata and USB 3.0 if you have them are great and much faster.
If you decide to go that route, look into using microsoft sync toy. Once you set it up, just push the run button and it will syncronize any folder or entire hard drive you want. I use it for my user folder. Best of all, it's free.

We recently purchased a FujiFilm FinePix 1300 digital camera. This camera uses USB Mass storage to access the smartmedia. As of this writing, I have installed and un-installed the driver countless times in any type of boot that I could come up with! No matter what is running, be it my few startup programs or just SysTray and Explorer, the computer ALWAYS locks up tighter than a drum whenever we try to access the camera. So tight that I have to overide via the power button to shut down. I'm running a HP Pavilion 6630, 256MB ram, Win98se. This is really frustrating! As I was successful the first try at installing it on my HP pavilion 4430 at work. It ran like a charm! And I might mention, that program wise, this computer and mine at work are almost identical in the installed programs. I use my home machine for work also!

Anyone have any ideas before I throw in the so called proverbial towel, and return the camera for a Sony????
Thanks!

Hi,
I have windows 7 enterprise edition. Couple of days back I had plugged in external harddisk and after I am done with that, I did not find "Safely Remove...." icon on the tray. Normally if I can not stop the harddisk, (even if all the apps and windows are closed), I go to sleep mode, remove the harddisk and wake the OS up. But last time I tried something different. I disabled the USB Mass storage (I read this some where on the net and they said to enable it after removing the disk) device under device manager. But I can not see that icon/device back in the list to enable it back.
Now if I plug in my harddisk OS won't do anything. If I plug other devices like USB mode, it works fine. How can I re-enable it back ? I tried to search , but could not find a solution (there was one solution for XP, as it was registry stuff not sure whether the same works for 7). I tried penyuusb, but due to some problem it is not getting activated (free software).

Can someone please help me ?

SYSTEM SPEC:WinXP Pro with SP22GB DDR RamPlenty of HDDAMD ProcessorHaving spent two days trying to discover why I cannot connect my Sony DSC T1 cybershot to transfer my photos and my new Nokia N95 as mass storage devices has twisted me around the bend.I've done the usual, uninstalled and then reinstalled the software, removed all traces of the files (to the best of my ability) swapped over cables, tried different USB sockkets (I dont use an external USB hub btw), to result in nothing.Maybe I'm overlooking something here that is quite simple but any ideas would be appreciated! + The girlfriend is getting annoyed with me spending so much time messing around on the PC - help!! lolBTW when connecting either of the two devices Windows see's them as the annoying bubble tip pops up, however a dialogue box then appears as in the picture here.

A:Mass Storage Issues

That's an unusual error message. First I'd suggest trying the Sony and Nokia to another computer to verify that they're not the issue (it's not likely to be them, but it's worth the time to check).Next, I'd check Disk Management when they're plugged in. Just to be sure that they're recognized as Storage Devices there (not much to do but to look at 'em). You can get to Disk Management by going to Start...Run...and typing in "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and pressing Enter.Next, I'd run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog to see if you have any issues with protected system files ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/ )Then, I'd update the motherboard/chipset drivers for your system from the manufacturer's website. It's possible that the old one's are corrupted, so get the latest one's available, uninstall the old ones, then install the new ones.If this doesn't work, then the next step would be a repair install of XP ( http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm )

A:USB Mass Storage Device

Sounds like you have some issue involving "uppers filters" and USB ports and devices. Do any USB devices work well?

You could Google that and try to find an answer or how to edit the registry to repair it. I'd tell you but I forget where to look in the registry to do this.

In any case, if you attempt, set a restore point before.

Try a Windows Update while device(s) is/are attached. See if they need a drive letter assigned in disk management.

If not, pick your favorite one and right click on it in the device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. No screenshots as alternative, please.

I have saved files to this external hard drive but when i plug it into my pc only some of the files show. The external drive is FAT32 and my pc is NTFS, ( im not sure whether or not that matters). Everything was ok with the Ex HDD before, it just doesn't seem to work on my pc. Can anyone help me please.

Have you gotten all the files you want off from the drive?

Try going to Start > Run, and typing:

cmd

At the command prompt, type:

chkdsk X: /f

where X: is the drive letter of the external drive.

If that doesn't help, try chkdsk X: /r

It makes no difference what file system it is.

Try going to the Sony site and downloading the most current Flash or SD card reader drivers. If they don't have any Win 7 drives you'll have to use compatibility mode to install them. Here is a tutorial Compatibility Mode

Hey everyone,
I have a problem. I have an A8N-VM/S mobo. I know its old. I am trying to load win 7 on it and the "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation." I tried an official win 7 pro dvd, I tried a bootable win 7 usb and still no luck. I went to Asus' website and click on win vista64 OS and only drivers available was the ACPI, and BIOS drivers.

My conclusion is that this mobo is so old and it wasn't meant to have win 7 installed on it. If anyone has ever ran to this issue or anything similar, some feedback or advice would be much appreciated

Gracias

Are the drives are detected in BIOS?  Make sure the SATA ports are enabled. You may want to get a new CMOS battery and use the jumper to clear CMOS too. Here is the Manual

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/10083/Asus-A8n-Vm.html

Edit: The only mass storage drivers I have found for the nforce 410/430 are for Vista and XP. It seems Windows 7 should have those as part of the OS.

Edit: If the drives are detected in BIOS and SATA ports enabled,  I found this. Hopefully you can strip out the basic sata drivers out.

Hi everyone, I've been trying to fix my friends pc for a whole day, the problem is that usb storage devices are not working. The usb ports are working fine because I tried my usb webcam and usb mouse and they were functioning well, however whenever i try a usb storage device, it finds the storage device, however it doesn't open up and even autoplay doesn't work. all that happens is it says format disk. and this happens on all four usb ports. even when i do format, the formatting never completes. Is this something related to the registry because i have tried everything else from unistalling and installing usb devices in device manager to updating the bios.

*****HELP PLS THANKS****

Browse to C:\WindowsSystem32\Drivers on a working computer and copy the USB.Sys,USBSTOR.sys, USBEHCI.sys and USBPORT.Sys files pasting to this computer. Or hit the Windows key+R on your keyboard and type SFC /scannow. The Windows File Protection window pops up. You may need your Vista DVD for this. It will now copy andymissing system files from the disc.

When I put files [eg songs in this case] onto the USB device and then stick it in another computer it lets me play them but it says I can only do so while its plugged in. I got it because I was sure I would be able to copy them onto the second machine. It's not the write-protect switch that's preventing me...I've tried that approach.
I may be able to copy them with WMP by "copying the now playing" but that would be too slow.[if it even works]
Any help and suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

On my tool bar at the bottom of the screen there is a safely remove hardware icon. When I select it takes me to screen that gives me 2 selections to safely remove hardware. One is my printer and the other is USB mass storage device. When I highlight either it shows me the device name again and says at location 0.
" HP Photosmart 3100 series at location 0"
" USB mass storage device at location 0"

Why is the icon there to give me the option of removal? Should I remove? What is the term "mass storage device referring too?

Thank you

Your printer probably has a sdcard slot on it. You can remove the memory card from your camera and put the card directly into the printer and print pictures directly from it. No need to bother to remove it or shut it down.

Under Device Manager there is a ! next to MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER (MSC). When I check on it, the message is that there is no driver and it is not working properly because it has a problem. I tried searching for a driver with no luck. What does A MSC do and how do I find a driver? There is no brand name listed for it.

it is for your usb driver, have you got the chipset installed before installing the drivers??

It may be preferable that you contact the maker of the USB 3 Controller.

In NA that's Renesas Electronics America .

There may be a driver or firmware that you need.

A:USB Mass storage error

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.

In the future (and I am speaking to general public here), please copy and paste this information instead of using a screenshot.

I'll see what I can do. It's an Acer 6in1 card reader I think.]

x64 or x86?

I am trying to give mysyelf a mass storage device, and so far it hasn't worked. First, I tried a 640G Hitchahci USB hard drive, but I received error messages during data transfer. I replaced it with a Hammer 640G USB unit. The same thing happened. I also noticed that the packaking (AC adaptor, etc USB cable, etc) were identical, except the Hammer was $10 more. So I figured MicroCenter (where I get my hardware) got a shipment of USB drives from the same manufacturer just with different housing and brand name (Hammer and Hitachi). I exchamged the second one for a Maxtor OneTouch4 1TB USB drive at MicoCenter. The same thing happens: I plug it in and XP doesn't find it. I tried every USB slot on my box, and it still doesn'r work. This should be the easiest thing in the world to do, plug in a USB mard drive and have it work.

All ideas and opinions are more than welcome. Thanks!

Recently downloaded a Verizon 4G LT# USB Modem for wireless internet. Worked fine for a week or so. Now, I get two messages. "Windows needs to install software for your mass storage controller or your device will not be detected." Second message, "Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact network administrator."

This is a home laptop.
