Windows 10 does not see/detect Samsung 950 PRO M2. PCIE/NVMe drive

Q: Windows 10 does not see/detect Samsung 950 PRO M2. PCIE/NVMe drive

For my recently bought E5570 Latitude I bought an new/bigger/faster SSD.
It's the Samsung 950 PRO with the PCIe connection and NVMe support.
I have created an Windows 10 install USB to doe a fresh install but windows does not see/detect the drive.
-edit-I was able to install windows by loading the F6 drivers for Intel Rapid Storage.
But not the less funny part, I only hit about 1000Mb/s reading while it should be around 2500Mb/s.Now samsung has a special NVME driver but that states no NVME drive is installed. Also samsung magician does not detect the drive correctly. The name is all weird and it has 0Gb storage.
Did anyone already come accross this issue? And if so how did you solve it

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Here is the guideline from Dell:

Im also interested in E5570, some questions:
1. Quite many user reviews complain about high-frequency noise coming from mobo or PSU unit. Can you confirm?
2. Would you know if any available Dell SSD option is actually NVMe?
Also, the trouble is, you have to buy M.2 SSD from Dell in order to get 6cell battery.

Yesterday I installed a Samsung 950 pro 256gb m2 pcie nvme ssd into a Dell E7270
Older configuration was with a sandisk regular sata 3 ssd. After replacement did a bios reset twice, once factory reset, once custom. (I left sata on ahci.)
I chose to install windows 10 pro x64 by using the uefi/gpt methode. Legacy options off.
Installation went without a problem. Afterwards I installed the Samsung nvme driver 1.4.7.17.
Also the Samsung magician software. It reports a link speed 8Gbps (is ok), link width 16 Gbps (should be 32?) .
Is there a way to change the pcie link width from 2x to 4x? I thought this ultrabook did support x4.

Microsoft has released NVMe Hotfixes 2990941 & 3087873 that add native NVMe drivers to Windows 7.
However if I am say installing Windows 7 SP1 on say Samsung NVme drive and Samsung has released suitable drivers in the form of INF, SYS and CAT files, do I really need to integrate these MS Hotfixes in Windows 7?
Can Windows 7 SP1 supplied with Samsung NVMe drivers (Either slip streamed or during install) be able to detect Samsung NVMe drive and install itself on to it?
As the title says are those MS Hotfixes a must (sort of pre-requsite) to get NVMe drive detected during installation, apart from any vendor provided drivers?
Thanks.

Hello,

I have a M900 and an Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2. On the Aminboard is a slot for a M.2 device. This is not the right one for the Samsung SSD. So I have bought an adapter (aqua computer - kyroM.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NGFF PCIe SSD, M-Key mit Passivkühler). After installing (PCIeSlot 4x) and booting the SSD is not recognized in the BIOS and in Windows (10 Prof. 64Bit).
Where is the problem? Is the adapter wrong?

Mod:  edited the Subject line with a problem description

A:M900 Tower & SFF: Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD 960 970 - how to install, check throughput (PCIe card)

That card you ordered definitely is not right.

I think this StarTech PCIe card is more what you need.

Supports PCIe M.2 SSDs
The adapter supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe (M Key) and PCIe-AHCI M.2 SSDs including 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 drives. The expansion slot adapter supports the most common drive sizes including 110 mm, 80 mm, 60 mm and 42 mm.

Here's another card that is also acceptable.

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a X121e and recall it being extremely easy to configure on Lenovo's site. So I decided to look at the X270. However, having had great difficulty even starting to configure it (apparently, Lenovo does not favour Firefox any longer), I'm currently having trouble understanding the choices. The first is the choice between PCIe and SATA PointingDevice. Following some discussion, I gather this has nothing to do with any kind of pointing device, but affects my HDD/SSD choices. OK, so let's see what the PCIe choices give me. I get 5 'first hard drive' options. (Nothing I do gets me a 'second hard drive' option, so not sure about this. Or rather, I almost understand this now I've read the platform specification, the user manual, the hardware maintenance manual and various posts on Reddit. up until windows preview build 14986, the pcie driver "Mobile 6th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O PCI Express Root Port #5 - 9D14" (v10.1.1.27) correctly detects the "Standard NVM Express Controller" storage controller and the Toshiba THNSN5512GPU7 NVMe disk attached to it. starting with windows preview build 15002 (and 15007), the included pcie driver has troubles detecting the storage controller - during bootup, it is detected 4 times, with each time on a different device id. subsequently, the drive is also added 4 times, resulting in boot controller errors & timeouts and failed sleep mode/shutdowns. the included chipset driver in these latest builds seem to have been bumped to v10.1.1.33. the problem can easily be replicated by using unmodified recovery boot usb sticks made from the official isos, and then checking in a recovery console. it is thus not related to anything installed in my system.

Hi All,I'm about to purchase an X1 Carbon. A long time Lenovo user and a big fan.I have read conflicting articles regarding which hard drive may be the best option (with best referring to speed!). Some people have said that the PCIe-NVMe can run excruciatingly hot and actually bottleneck the whole computer whilst others have said it's blisteringly fast and makes a huge difference.I'm keen to know if:1) It makes any noticable difference to speed compared to the SATA?2) If any of you have had any heat issues with it?3) If, in your opinion, it is worth the extra money? My use case for the laptop will be heavy data analysis in Excel and SpotFire (sometimes Access) as well as playing the occasional game. I'm opting to go for the highest end X1 Carbon (i7-6600U and 16GB of Ram) so weighing on my mind is the benefit of the PCIe-NVMe.Thanks in advance.

Hello all, is it possible to upgrade, after market of course, to a 1T NVMe PCIe SSD? This is a novice question, but wanted to ask, as some friends are pushing me towards T460S because of this drive availability. Would not all I need is an adapter and would that, along with the  NVMe PCIe drive fit, within the casing? Or is it more technologially involved than that, like bios, space and other such? Also, the T460P has 4g RAM soldered in, yet one can upgrade to 32g involving 2 - 16g sticks, this does mean that the 4g is diabled with the 2 sticks installed, correct? TIA - bo1953

Hello,My understanding is that both the T460p and T470p support PCIe 3.0 x2 via their SATAe SSD connector. The T470p has an adapter on which an M2 2280 PCIe NVMe drive can be connected and get speeds higher than SATA.  The T460p on the other hand only has this one Toshiba SATAe drive to improve on SATA speeds, and that is limited to 256GB, it is rare and cancels the WAN port for further storage. So, can the adapter from the T470p be used in the T460p? This would solve all problems for the T460p, higher speed and good capacity. Thanks

What I would like to do is make the SSD my boot drive. There was a BIOS workaround in a previous thread from late 2016 that indicated a fix was being worked on... is it available now?

Yes, I installed a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD a couple months ago in my XPS 8910 and made it the boot drive.
I installed the M.2 SSD and then just disconnected the SATA cord from the 1TB HDD. I then used USB recovery media drive to install Windows 10 and programs to the SSD. After everything was loaded onto the SSD and working fine, I reconnected the 1 TB SATA HDD, formatted and deleted the original partitions and made it the D: drive for general file storage.

My ThinkPad P51 with Lenovo supplied nvme system SSD (Samsung PM961 MZNLN512HMJP-000L7) is crashing lately during heavy I/O.  I don't know if it's a hardware problem or possibly a firmware bug. I'm looking for advice on how to troubleshoot. The system is under warranty.  I want to avoid spinning my wheels with service. I'm current with Windows 10 Pro and Lenovo updates.  I've got the latest BIOS. There doesn't seem to be any firmware updates available for that drive as it is supposed to be supplied by the OEM.  Samsung magician doesn't support that drive because it is the OEM edition. When the problem occurs the drive goes offline.  This causes Windows 10 to crash (blue screen) and reboot.   No windows system log entries are written since the drive went off line.  No dump is available. I first noticed the problem when trying to do a full backup. The built in diagnostics see no problem.  They do a quick scan that isn't enough I/O to trigger the problem.  A chkdsk to scan for bad sectors will cause the system to crash. If I boot into a Linux rescue environment, I can see the same problem occur just trying to do a sequential read.  Usually after reading about 60-100 GB the drive goes offline.  There are messages in dmesg about reseting the nvme controller and capacity going from 512 GB to 0. I wouldn't mind getting the drive replaced by the warranty, but I don't want to waste a lot of time ... The compatibility list for SED NVMe support states that the DDPE tools will support SED (OPAL) hardware encryption for the PM961 but I don't see the SM961 listed and I thought the only major difference was TLC vs MLC.  On the 7480 it shouldn't make a difference at 2x, but the write speeds will be much better on the SM series.
Is it compatible?  The performance of the Toshiba XG4 is unacceptable.  The PM961 would get closer, but it'd be best to retrofit an SM961.  Thank you for any help offered.

Just what the title says - if I select the cheapest option of storage, will I be able to upgrade to a SSD with pcie level performance? Or is the slot/hardware different with the cheaper storage option?

HiIs it possible to change my SSD to a Samsung 950PRO NVMe disk? Will BIOS find that SSD? If no, when will we have a new BIOS that could do that?www.samsung.com/.../overview.htmlBest RegardsUbbe1

A:Dell xps 13 9343 early 2015 NVMe M2 Samsung 950Pro drive

Samsung 950 Pro work and boot fine on XPS 9343 just make sure that you install Windows 10 in GPT partition for UEFI not MBR. The problem is XPS 9343 only supported PCI-E x2 not x4 max read speed is around 800Mb/s and write around 700Mb/s on ATTO.
