Keyboard not functioning on Dell desktop

Q: Keyboard not functioning on Dell desktop

I have a Dell Dimension E310 that I just recently started having a issue with - the keyboard no longer works. It is a USB keyboard and there's no PS2 on the computer. Someone on another site suggested resetting the CMOS and I did that but it made a new problem, now it's saying Floppy Disk Seek Failure. Without the keyboard I am unable to access the BIOS or even do a reinstall of Windows XP Home so I'm kinda lost on what to do. I've already tried a different keyboard and no dice. the keyboard I am using lights up with caps lock on and all, just don't have any other key functionality.

Any and all help is appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hmmm..

So when you boot your Dell and hit F2 during the Dell screen you can't enter your BIOS?? And you say you've already tried a different USB keyboard???

Don;t know for sure but might be a sign of a more serious issue with your USB ports and hardware if you can't even enter BIOS on power up.

One thing you might try: go to your local computer store and get a PCI card with a PS/2 port. I see them online for cheap ($10) but best to go to a local brick and mortar store i think since if that fails to work to, at least is easy to return it. Then try a PS/2 keyboard.

When you get into BIOS, check if there's a setting for USB Legacy Support and that it's Enabled. That tells BIOS to emulate USB before Windows actually loads and starts. As I think if USB fails even during BIOS USB emulation, it probably means hardware failure is my guess. (Tho maybe others might have other opinion... ?)

Dell Inspiron 1420 - Vista, it is old one was working perfectly till now.
Issue: the Keys automatically starts typing and performing various keystroke functions, also disabling may keys. Even in BIOS mode key entries were restricted
Solutions tried ( nothing worked):
Disabled the keyboard , used external keyboard USB ( doesn't resolved)
bought new dell keyboard, didn't resolved the issue
Ran in safe mode, issue persist
Formatted to factory default mode, issue persist
Observation: I see multimedia keys always blinking randomly ( can this be multimedia keys, interfacing with keyboard. I planned to remove it but it was soldered across. please confirm if I shall disable this keyboard ( hardware) as extra step, if Yes shall I remove solder or there is workaround.
Any guidance would be help if any other option to be tried

As my  curiosity and timelines were ending, I dared to rip out the soldering connecting to Multimedia keys/buttons circuit board, then put a tape around the ribbon cable end, booted my system. VOLA it worked no automatic typing, no freaky ghost playing on my system. Still keeping finger crossed as I unplugged only one side, i hope it does not impact and driver or systems.
I will try to find the part if available in market.
I was on edge to buy new laptop, as this issue was running for 6 months. saved me few more bucks. Will try to check if this can support Windows 8 or later as it is core2 DUO 3 GB ram.

My Dell XPS 400 Desktop with Pentium D processor with Windows XP media edition suddenly gave a blue screen error. It will not reboot to give me a chance to fix it. When turned on it goes as far as the Screen that shows " We apologize but windows did not start successfully; a recent hardware or software change might have caused this ...." Then it gives options to strat up like "Safe mode" " Last successfull login.." Start windows normally"
but no mater what choice you make there is no further progress. THe Keboard suddenly goes dead and the mouse stops functioning too.
How do I proceed?
PS
I have tried installing another hard drive and it will not go past the first screen,
I tried reinstalling a windows on the same hard drive but it will not proceed neither

I'm not sure if its a Windows XP problem or not. My desktop has been packed away for 9 months. I have recently installed a Linksys USB wireless adapter & was able to do all upgrades to all programs as needed. My pc was working fine for about 3 days then something went wrong. My desktop turns on perfectly fine, no error messages of any kind. Sometimes, when i go to double click or do quick launch of a program, it comes up looking like i did a right click asking for details of the icon. There are also times when in the middle of typing, the keyboard just stops. I can still use the mouse to CLOSE either IE 8 windows or any other program but if I want to open something, I have to right click & manually select Open but, ex: when i try to do a system restore, it will let me open the program but will not let me select anything or another ex is when i try to save something to anywhere, i can't do anything but cancel or close the window. I'm lucky I've been able to type this much. LOL. Sometimes this happens immediately after turning on & sometimes in the middle of doing something. I can never exactly duplicate the problem. I have been able to do a go back to the day before it was packed away & still no good. I have run my AVG virus & spyware scans with no unusual messages, I've also run the Highjack This program & the Belarc Advisor for any info if needed if it'll help any. Please advise.

I've never seen this exact problem with Windows being the main cause. Definitely a weird issue.

Could it be possible it's the mouse and/or keyboard actually acting up? How are they connected to the PC? USB or PS/2?

Do you have access to another keyboard and mouse that you could try?

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Would any of you loverly people happen to have the Windows 7 drivers for the wired USB keyboard that comes with the Dell Studio 540 desktop?

Having upgraded to 7 I lost the ability to use the hotkeys at the top of the keyboard. Unfortunately I can't find these drivers on the Dell website - only the ones for the wireless.

Hi...I'm not sure where to put this request, thought since the Dell Inspiron 15 is running Windows 10 (including latest update) that there might be a conflict between the desktop and the keyboard down in the nuts and bolts somewhere. I can turn the machine on, the capslock light comes on, SOMETIMES the keyboard works well enough to input the pin to get the desktop booted up. Sometimes I have to go through steps to get the touch screen keyboard up in order to input the pin. However, as soon as the desktop is active, the keyboard no longer works. I've updated the drivers, don't know what else to do. When I try a search online for a solution, I get differing ideas on how to solve the problem. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, that didn't work. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I really need the keyboard to be working, my kids do their homework on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Guys,
I have this strange problem. When I type something on the keyboard none of the printable characters show up on the screen i.e. if I open up a word processor or an IE nothing I type shows up. But if I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete the windows security screen shows up as it is supposed to. The arrow keys also work fine. Also, the pc reboots every so often (no set interval), a blue screen comes up before the system reboots but it doesn't stay up long enough to read what it says. Could this be caused by a virus? If so, do you know any fixes? I'm using Windows 2000. Help is greatly appriciated.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I can get some help with this issue.

Recently I installed a new copy of WinXP Pro onto my machine and everything was working correctly except for the Multimedia Buttons on my keyboard. Before, my keyboard ( Dell SK-8135 USB) worked perfectly. I tried everything from updating drivers to downloading repair kits. Finally after a restart, I noticed that the multimedia buttons worked but all my other buttons on the keyboard didn't!

I've tried uninstalling the driver, letting the computer pick up the keyboard but still no luck. Device Manager says everything is working correctly.
The keyboard functions in the BIOS but not in the OS (except for the music keys of course).
Does anyone have suggestions on what it would take for normal keys to work? Maybe something to be changed in the registry? Any help is appreciated!

I have a Abit KT7 motherboard, and a pretty old ps/2 keyboard, and a logitech [email protected]

Yesterday my whole computer went berzerk when I tried to change my mouse from ps/2->usb, I would get a bluescreen from a audiodriver and after fixing that, the mouse still didn't work properly.. Or it did, but it found new hardware (the mouse) after every reboot and it had a logitech mouse installed under human interface devices and under mouse it had just (unknown mouse= installed.. well to get there it took about 5h of uninstalling and installing different drivers and it finally seemed to work .. when upon booting into xp, the keyboard stopped working. In bios it still works, but if I eg. repeatedly press caps lock when booting, after the grey bar has gone to the right edge the light on the keyboard stops flashing..

I have absolutely now idea wtf is up with this. I think that this same problem has occured before too, I remember it being one of those bugs solved by eating a banana while dancing on one foot..

Yeah so now I'm installing (or recovering the installed version) of xp, but its kinda stuck since when it boots the first time from the hard drive the keyboard wont work in the installation program when it asks me where a file is.. I think I'll now install a fresh copy of xp, but please I really hope someone can shed some light on whats happening.

A:Keyboard not functioning after booting

Since your mouse is working, click on your start and then "help and support". There you can click on system restore and pick a date before your woes. I've used this several time to save me from myself poking around and messing things up. Now I know this doesn't answer the "why" of your problem, but it might save you some hours of frustration. Also, once you get things as you like them, you can pick a particular date and set it with a name so that you can restore to that particular day. Another useful feature in XP.
Good luck!

I've tried checking and unchecking sticky keys, looking at the On-Screen Keyboard, uninstalling, rolling back, and updating drivers... full system restores to middle of last month which is about a week before I suspected it stopped working.

I use a wireless mouse and keyboard. Every now and then, often enough to be irritating, the keyboard fails to function: the mouse works properly. The keyboard problem persists for a few minutes, after which it works again. There is no discernable pattern to this problem.

This is the third wireless keyboard to show the same problem, suggesting something is wrong elsewhere.

The keyboard batteries are not responsible for the failure.

On the same desk is a cordless telephone.

Any helpful suggestions would be very gratefully received.

A:Intermittent keyboard non-functioning

I wonder if you are suspecting interference from other wireless transmitting devices? Your comment about the cordless phone suggests an obvious test - could you relocate the phone elsewhere and see if the problem still occurs? The same with any other wireless devices located nearby. Do you have any nearby electrical devices or lights which emit radio frequency noise?

Hi

Sometimes my laptop keyboard will simply stop functioning or have extreme lag. But it's different than the lag we are accustomed too. It's more of a one key takes about 10 minutes to appear and even if i continually press key's, it would not show all the keys pressed, only the first or maybe second one.

There appears to be no apparent pattern to this. It happens with or without battery power attached. It happens in the middle of anything. So, I really am doubtful it's connected to a specific issue or something.

I can see power lights on my keyboard but still, trying to get inside the system BIOS menus, boot from CD, or or even start into safe mode are impossible for me. However, I can get inside the BIOS if I immediately, (and I mean IMMEDIATELY) hit the respective button as soon and the POST starts. But after that, when I'm inside the BIOS menu, again, I cant do anything. I've even tried using a PS/2 to USB adapter to see if it may work, but to no avail. Right now I'm trying to reset the jumpers and take out the battery in hope that this will reset the settings. I've benched down to everything except the hard drive, RAM, and processor. today my computer was fuctioning normally. then suddenely my keyboard and mouse doesnt work. theres no input at all. the lights doesnt come on, and theres no sign of charging. so i look closer and the base isnt charging, none of the usb ports, headphone jack, hdmi port, or any bit of the base is functioning at all. the tablet works fine, but the computer doesnt show the secondary battery or show any form of docking when i connect the tablet to the base. i restored windows with no changes, i tried reinstalling drivers with no changes. this is definitely a hardware problem but i dont know if just the base battery needs to be replaced or if i need a whole new base, or if theres another connectivity issue. please help!!

A:mouse and keyboard not functioning during boot up

If your keyboard and mouse are USB, have you tried plugging them into different USB ports to see if they would work?

I have a Hp laptop set on a docking station. I have a microsoft kb and mouse attached to it. The problem I am having is when I run any code debugger and want to use the funtion keys, I am not able to do that from the external keyboard. I can only do it on the laptop kb. Also the special buttons on the keyboard dont work like zoom, volume etc. But on the mouse everything is fine.

Any advice is appreciated.

Looks like some incompatibility with your external keyboard. How about trying another keyboard (other than a microsoft kb)?

When the BIOS is posting I cannot use the keyboard keys; "Enter" or
"up/dwn" arrows when trying to either start in the OS or into the Recovery Console. I also found this to be true, if I try to boot from the CD. It will not recognize the pressing of any key. Is there something in the BIOS Setup to recognize the keyboard ? OS XP Home SP 2

Thanks,

Billjh

The situation:

- first time setting up Bitlocker on a desktop for the C: drive
- enabled Bitlocker without TMP security through group policy + set-up a pin code
- pc has "Fast Boot" setting turned on

Problem:
- on reboot Bitlocker screen appears asking for PIN code. BUT, USB keyboard does not function.
- I cannot enter the PIN, I cannot enter BIOS

Tried all available usb ports on the tower to no avail. Have been searching the internet, but so far the solutions are: "try the on screen keyboard" (no can do, this is not a Surface), or "go to BIOS" (no can do, keyboard not working
during that step of the boot up presumably due to Fast Boot), or "change X setting in group policy" (no can do since I can't get past Bitlocker screen).

Very much in need of help as desktop is currently unusable. Thanks in advance

Once I installed Win10, the USB Acer keyboard started malfunctionning (erratic key responses, no responses at all, etc. A reboot of the system settles the problem... for about 10 minutes. I tried the keyboard on other computers: works fine. I even tried an old PS2 keuboard, with the same results. I updated all the available drivers published on the Acer Web site to no avail. A call to the Acer service center resulted with the suggestion that I should revert to Win 7. Unbeleivable !Has anyone encountered a similar problem ? Ps help needed.vital
