how to setup multiple monitors? help

Q: how to setup multiple monitors? help

I would like to setup 2 monitors on my computer. I know my computer is older but it is very fast and I don't plan on using the monitors on resource hogging stuff
My specs are
Intel pentium 4 3ghz HT ENABLED
4gb ram
1tb hdd
Nvidia gt 520 1gb
windows 7
My monitors are 2 different inputs / outputs
If I just plugged them both in to the plugin on my gpu would it work?
and have to adjust stuff?
I have never used dual monitors so I dont know.
One monitor has a 1600x900 (I plan on this being main monitor)
Other is 1024x768
what do I need to do?
Any GOOD software for this?

one of them is dvi and other is vga
Also I am new to this site and I dont know what section this should be in

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to connect an external TV to my laptop using HDMI connection.
I turned off both of them.
Connected the cable
turned on the TV.
Turned on my laptop.
Everything is fine while the windows starting, everything is displayed on the TV, (which is determined from the bios setup).
When the welcome screen appears, it appears on the laptop, not on the TV.
nothing appears on the TV.
I entered the resolution page and pressed the detect button, all what I get is "Another display not detected"
I tried updating my nvidia card driver.
I searched the internet for any help, I found that this problem happens with a lot of people, most of them say that this problem happened only with windows 7, and the external TV was detected easily using windows XP or Vista.

Please help.

This thread is from nvidia forums showing that the problem is not in the display card driver and all of them have the problem when upgraded to windows 7.

I have attached a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 7, however, I need to set different resolutions for different monitors, because the display does not fit to fill the screen on both monitors.

It is also noted that the display is replicated, and I would like to have the effect of having different desktops e.g. being able to use different applications such as debugging code on one monitor on an IDE such as Visual Studio, and, viewing the browser on the other monitor.

Currently it does not seem possible since the behavior seems to be that the same resolution is replicated on both monitors.

Are more than two monitors supported?

A:Working with multiple monitors does not allow multiple desktops

Set it to extended mode instead of duplicate, then you can use both independently.

I have an Envy TS15 with an external secondary monitor (Benq 4k) on the HDMI port. The colour difference between the two is amazing to see when I am working in Photoshop. The Benq is very clearly superior of course but I would like to be able to adjust the profile for the built-in display. I wopuild like to be able to get consistent colour across the two devices. The laptop of course does not have monitor adjustment buttons like an external monitor and seems to only be contollable via the built-in Windows monitor colour calibration - but this does not allow me to get a match between the two monitors (insufficient controls). Is it possible to apply separate colour profiles to the two monitors - currently in extended desktop, if I change the profile on one monitor (in Windows) the profile seems to affect the other. A LUT checker tells me if I change the LUT on the laptop monitor, the same LUT is being applied to the external monitor. Is there for example, a way to control onme with the Intel graphics card and the other with the GeForce 740m card and load LUTs separately?

I have a Ti 4600 8x and everything was running smoothly...

The only video game I play is Unreal Tournament 2004, and one day it started acting funny. For maybe 30 or so seconds it runs smoothly and then things just freeze for 2 or 3 seconds... i can run the same but i can't see my bullets, and if i a person was moving to the right, they keep moving to the right. Then it goes back to normal for 30 or so seconds and then glitches up for 2 or 3 again... repeat. Same all on servers.

So I rebooted my computer after reinstalling my video driver and now what was originally display 1 is now display 2 and vice versa. Normally I'm a pretty flexible guy and could care less and did care less about that till i tried to move to my 2nd monitor (now display 1 on my right side)... so to go to the right monitor i have to move my mouse left and to get back to my left monitor i have to go right. I ran into the wall in the middle a couple of times out of habbit, snapped, and now I'm posting a thread.

Thanks for reading.

Open up your display properties and under Settings where it shows two monitors grab one and move it to the other side. Should be as simple as that.

A:Need to setup 2 monitors

JWittek, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Looking at the specs for your computer,

Compaq Presario CQ5600Y Desktop PC Product Specifications Compaq Presario CQ5600Y Desktop PC | HP? Support

it only has a VGA port for connecting a monitor. As a result yes you will need a video card if you want to connect two monitors. It also has one PCI-E 16x slot, so you can easily add a card.

Now with that said the power supply that is in it limits what you can add, without upgrading the PSU as well. For a card something like a Geforce 610 or a Radeon HD 5450 should be fine with that PSU, as both are very low power requirement cards. They won't do much of anything for gaming, but are ideal for multi-monitor.

Processor, RAM, and hard drive have nothing to do with multiple monitor setups or support. You need a graphics card that supports dual monitors, or you need 2 graphics cards. You've just listed a generic graphics card chipset.

A:Dual monitors setup

 Welcome to TechSpot

Well, it depends on what harddrive you've got, who made the motherboard and the graphics card, what os you are running, and if the drivers of the two cards are compatible. Then it depends on what you want to use it for.

But yes, it should be possible to do a dual screen setup, though it might take a bit of work..

First post so my apologies if this is in the wrong area.

I have a work computer where I am trying to hook 4 monitors (2 for video surveillance and 2 for my work programs). Its a lenovo m700 (model: hy10-000gus ... all specs here (http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkCentre/ThinkCentre M700 Tiny/M700 Tiny.pdf)

I only have 2 Display ports for my current two monitors. I am wondering how I can support 4. The "sales rep" at lenovo said it will only support 3 max.

Through research I've found some USB to HDMI adapters that have external video cards? If i bought two could i then have 4 monitors off the computer?? Does anyone have any recommendations of brand??

Is there any other way to do this? (I'm not that tech savvy so please, layman's terms for me)

Please and thanks for your help in advance!!!!!

hi, does anyone know how to set up duel monitors besides a duel headed card. Can you install two cards and set it up that way or do you have to get a duel headed card?

A:duel monitors setup

Yes you can simply install two video cards (one on AGP / one on PCI for example) & have a DualView setup. You will be a bit more limited in this setup as you won't be able to get the taskbar to use both screens (at least without a 3rd party application), you won't be able to have a proper video overlay on both cards & a few other setbacks.

It's still a good way to get familiar with dual screens setups though. Worth trying out.

david95, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Yes you can run them independently, that is what extended mode is (clone mode is all displays showing the same thing), allowing you to run different applications on each display. For what you want to do with playing games on the TV you will have to set it as the primary display as most games will on launch/work on the primary, especially if run full screen.

Hey guys,

First all, sorry if this is in the wrong section. My topic is.. kind of a hybrid of a bunch.

I currently have a dual monitor setup for my computer, but one of them is dying out.

I'm going to be getting a Wii, so I'm also planning on getting a composite / component compatible monitor.

Here's my planning:

And here's the rear of the P2370HD:

Hoping for the P2370HD to be an extension to my desktop when the source is set to PC, and to display the Wii when it's set to the Wii (RCA).

Now for my question(s):
1- If I'm running full computer (desktop on primary and extended onto secondary), and I switch the secondary to run the Wii, will the desktop still function on the primary?

If so, will the sound output whatever's on the desktop monitor AND the Wii monitor?
If not, then why not?

Please note that the desktop's sound is outputted to the second monitor which is outputted to the speakers. Thus my assumption that the speakers would indeed output sound from both as both signals are coming from the second monitor in the end.

I'll add some more questions if I come up with any.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance!

I have been having one heck of a day. I want to set up 3 monitors on my computer. I would be happy just to get 2 of them setup. The onboard video has a cover over it saying do not remove. hi I have purchased a VTX 7850 and it says it supports up to 4 monitors in eyefinity.

I only want to hook up 3. I'm using x3 CQ1859s 18.5in monitors 1366x768 60hz (only have VGA connections)

my graphics card has:
x1 hdmi
x2 DVI
x2 mini display port

I have x2 dvi to vga convertors and have ordered an active mini display to vga adapter. I have herd a rule that the first two monitors can be connected to whatever (in my case the dvi ports x2) and the third monitor has to be connected via mini display port with an active adapter if the monitor doesn't have a MDP?

can you confirm this for me? or tell me what I must do to make eyefinity work across 3 monitors.

A:VTX 7850 eyefinity setup x3 monitors

I have a 7950, and yeah I am able to run 3 at once, after I got the active mini-DP adaptor and cable for the 3rd port.

Will there be an issue with 3 VGAs (analog), not 100% sure, you will be a nice test case, please let us know here, all 3 of mine are digital.

I am hopeful, it's not a problem.

If anyone else has done this and reads they will surely chime in *hint hint* muhahaha!

OP, with those smaller screens, I see why you want to do this, I use 2 only usually, 3rd is my 39" HDTV, and not exactly placed right in my face, like my monitors: I have a portrait monitor 24" and a regular 23" and spaced apart, so I don't spread my games across them, it's very dependent on the software supporting it anyway, otherwise I'd expect it be quite distorted stretched artificially.

Perhaps someone doing it, can back this up or refute.

I do game a bit myself, but never needed that much range, but my eyes are getting old, so jumping around mega quick focusing over and over isn't as good. So 1 it is.... Time machine would be nice, but I'd go back 25 years or so, ooops no FPS! muhahaha!

I am using the system spec as shown in the signature. Both monitors are connected to a single ATI 6870HD. The Dell U2311H is connected to the card via minidisplay-display port while the LG M227WD is connected via the DVI cable. The problematic monitor is the monitor over the display port (Dell). The monitor goes black randomly, sometimes during I play games. Sometimes it goes black more than few seconds, and I get a message on the screen saying power down as there is no reception from the display port.

I have updated the latest drivers, but still this problem persists. Any idea how to solve it?

A:One of the two monitors setup randomly goes blank/dark

Hi mystvearn,

My name is Ravi and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

I see that you are facing issues with your display. This might be because of the issue with the monitor or with the video card of your system. To isolate the issue I would request you to disconnect the VGA cable from the Dell monitor and leave it as it is. This will bring up the diagnostic screen of the monitor. Leave the monitor as it is for some time and check if it flickers.

If the Monitor flickers even in the diagnostics then the monitor has gone bad

If it doesn’t flicker then it is an issue with video card of the desktop.

Let us know the progress

Thanks & Regards

He is currently using a DVI monitor. Since his motherboard has an available HDMI slot then it was my suggestion that he get a cable and connect it to his HDTV that way he could watch for example the history channel online through his computer to his HDTV.

When I connect the cable from the computer to the TV then the DVI monitor shows NO SIGNAL The TV will show the desktop but has no sound when running anything. I couldn't find a way to have both the monitor and the TV running at the same time. He is using a Aurum Ultra Series - High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet CL3 Certified - Supports 3D & Audio Return Channel Full HD

The DVI Monitor is an Acer X203H bd 20-Inch LCD Monitor. He is running Windows 7 64 Bit.

Does anyone have any advice? Could it be that he need both an HD Monitor & HDTV for this to work using a splitter to send the signal both ways? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I didn't know where this topic would be appropriate so I put it in the XP one.

I'm trying to set up multiple monitors using a CRT TV that has an s-video hook up. My video card has a TV-out and I have the proper cord to connect the 2 (the cord actually splits into an s-video and composite video). When it's all hooked up and I go into the display settings and try to enable or activate the second monitor, it just flickers for a second or two then stops and nothing has changed.

I have set this up in the past but forgot how I did it. I'm not completely sure but the last time I had it set up, I might have had my old Radeon 9000 pro instead of my x1600 pro that I have now. Thanks in advance for any help.

A:multiple monitors

You need a video card with two outputs or use two video cards. If you use two cards, you should use cards of the same brand (ie: ATI or nVidia).

With that said, it also depends on the TV and the type of inputs that it supports. You then need a card with an output that matches the TV input (ie: HDMI, DVI, VGA, etc.)

I have two video cards, both with dual VGA heads.

One is an ATI Radeon 9600, and the other is a Nvidia MX440.

My computer has been cold-crashing recently, and I though it was due to the power supply being insufficient (which I have not ruled out entirely).

But on a whim I decided to use the "send error report" feature when it came back up.

The analysis said it was due to the ATI card, and I should go to their website, and install new drivers.

So naturally, I did. I selected my OS, the card type, and then downloaded the driver and installed it.

I am pleased to report that it has fixed the cold-crashing problem...

However, as with many remedies, there are side-effects. In this case, the new drivers:

1.) Stopped the ATI card from working entirely.
2.) Crippled the Nvidia card, reducing it to only one screen
3.) Slowed the entire system to a crawl.
4.) Crippled the sound card driver, so that music sounds like high pitched static noise.

Well of course it's not going to crash now- The three most power-hungry cards have been disabled!

I love ATI

I suppose the smart thing to do at this point would be a driver roll-back, or a system restore, but since I have never used them, I forgot I even had the option until after I formated the hard drive.

(That tends to be my solution for most software problems. It's cheaper than all of those utilities to clean it up )

So having said all that, here is the problem:

Hi, I want to use three monitors, one laptop screen and two external screens. I have connected the screens in two ways. VGA + DisplayPort to HDMIWith this setup, two monitors do work. When I try to add a third monitor (Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution) and click OK, Windows gives the following message: "Unable to save display settings". Wether I enable the laptop screen with an external screen or two external screens does not matter. It just cannot handle three screens. Microsoft says: "This issue occurs because some laptop graphic adapters only support two displays at one time. When you attempt to configure the display settings to use a third monitor on a laptop that supports only two monitors, Windows 7 and Windows 8 will check the hardware to confirm compatibility, then display the error message." But the hardware does support three monitors... VGA + DisplayPort to VGA adapter (to VGA of course)When i connect the screens like this, alle screens are working. The only problem is that when I set the resolution of the screen attached to the DisplayPort (to VGA adapter) to 1920 x 1080, the screen starts to flicker. When I put  the resolution to 1600 x 900 the screen works just fine. I'm running windows xp home on my laptop and I'm setting up multiple monitors. I'm having a problem making my second monitor my primary monitor. I see the option in the display properties but I can't check the option to have my second monitor my primary, the box is shaded over. Is there a way to have the second monitor my primary? Thanks

Strangely enough you appear to need to make the selection on the other monitor (where the selection is not greyed out) and then it will be available on the second one (and selecting that unselects and greys out the other one)

Works for me anyway.

Hey guys,

I have an Asus G75V laptop. I have two additional monitors that are connected to my laptop, one with a VGA connection and the other with a HDMI connection.

My question is: How do I set my laptop to keep the settings/layout without it changing whenever I power off the laptop and monitors?

If I power on my laptop without one of my monitors powered on, all the settings are changed. I would like to keep it as is when I set everything up.

My setup is like this: My laptop's monitor is the main monitor. I have two other monitors on either side of my laptop. The one on the left is through VGA and the one on the right is through HDMI. I extended my display to the left. I mirror my laptop's image on the monitor to the right (HDMI).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Greetings all!
I have the following issue I need assistance in resolving.
I currently have my Syncmaster 2033 as my primary viewing screen.
I'm able to use a Sharp Aquos independantly to view Hi def, provided I have the syncmaster disconnected! That is I cannot have both connected, the syncmaster connect6ed via dvi connection and the Aquos connected by HDMI connection.
When I start my system the syncmaster displays the windows logo but then goes dark and the Aquos lights up and is the main view screen while the sysncmaster is dark.
So how can I use multiple monitors?
My specs are updated on the bottom left and I have downloaded the latest ATI catalyst drivers.

The monitor have a VGA connection? If so try it with that instead of the DVI connection. Problem is as I understand it is that both the DVI and HDMI connections can't be used at the same time. Don't remember where I saw it but has something to do with using two digital connections at the same time (and how the RAMDAC's handle it), but works fine with the VGA and HDMI.

Hi all

First post ever to a computer forum

I have a new computer and I am planning to output to on or more of three monitors including a 42 inch TV

I have an ATI 5770 GPU

The output will be identical on the different displays

Stupid question - does the output to multiple monitors slow the performance? If so it there a way to activate only the monitor or monitors that I will be using?

Welcome to SevenForums! You made the right decision posting here.

If you have a compatible video card, you will have no trouble using dual monitors. Performance impact will be slight, unnoticeable unless you are trying to game that way.

Yes, you can disable any monitors you do not use. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen Resolution. YOu can go from there.

Hope this helps,

I have a K3 series desktop. It only has one VGA port which I use for the main monitor. I wanted to add another one so I bought a VGA adaptor. When I installed a new monitor I got a screen and I could move sessions to it but the desktop did not recognize the new monitor. I couldn't change the resolution which was so low the text was very big and I couldn't use it that way. Has anyone else had this problem? I used an adaptor that I bought at Best Buy. They told me that the setting needed to be adjusted. I called  Intel and they said that they could not help because it might be a custom setting for Lenovo.  Lenovo support said they do not help with this system any longer. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?Thank youSandra

Hello. I am new here.

Have a question regarding using multiple monitors for display purposes, while using my laptop & its monitor to perform other app's.

Example: I photograph sporting events. I download my compact flash to my pc. I then do a quick batch enhancement on the photo's I just downloaded. Then I would like to name folders to upload to viewing station monitors. I would like to be able to use multiple monitors for displaying my photographs, at the same time still being able to use the pc for additional downloads and batch enhancements before uploading to additional folders for the viewing station monitors.

Do I need additional software/hardware? And "how do I" set this up? All input is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me regarding this question.

Hi, I'm new here so I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section.

I have 2 monitors and one TV connected to my Win7 desktop. I was wondering if there's a gadget or something to facilitate the process of changing my display as my current video card only supports 2 screens at once. I use my 2 monitors most of the time, but whenever I want to watch a movie its a hassle to disable my secondary monitor to enable my TV. If there's anything that will make this process quicker, please let me know.

Thank you.

Welcome to Seven Forums johnnyc418. A monitor switch box can be used to share 2 monitors with one PC (basically what you need to do). They will likely need to use the same type of output (VGA, or DVI). Have a google for Monitor Switch Box, and you will find many choices and price ranges. A Guy

I have a Radeon HD 5570 1GB which has display port, hdmi & dvi port. I would like to connect 3 monitors but this video card only supports 2 monitors. What is cheapest & simplest way to provision the 3rd monitor to extend desktop? Could I add ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB as a 2nd card? Will this work no problem for sure? Connect any monitor to the 2nd card? Need dissplay port adapter? Any config required?
