Missing optional "BrowseOnly" Windows Updates from COM IUpdateSearcher

Q: Missing optional "BrowseOnly" Windows Updates from COM IUpdateSearcher

I am using powershell to manually apply certain updates and I think I've encountered a bug, but I'm not sure if it's in Powershell or the COM object. It is reproducible in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
In order to retrieve a list of known optional updates I am using powershell to init COM IUpdateSearcher:
$Searcher = New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.Searcher
$Searcher.Online = false

... and then search for those updates using its criterion
BrowseOnly=1:
$Searcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 and IsHidden=0 and BrowseOnly=1 and AutoSelectOnWebSites=0").Updates
That command returns no results, despite many optional updates being available on the computers I tested. Yet if I remove BrowseOnly=1 the updates with BrowseOnly are returned in the results:
$Searcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 and IsHidden=0 and AutoSelectOnWebSites=0").Updates

I can apply a post search filter to get the results with only BrowseOnly:
$Searcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 and IsHidden=0 and AutoSelectOnWebSites=0").Updates | foreach { if($_.BrowseOnly) { $_ } }

This seems like a bug to me. Would anyone mind trying to reproduce this issue? To reproduce you will need Windows Update to be aware of at least one optional update that is not installed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

is it a good idea to install the 26 "update for Windows 7" "kbxxxxxxx" updates that sit in the 'optional updates' section of my Windows Update notification bar. are they needed for anything? do they make my computer work better? what are they there for?

A:"Update for Windows 7" (in optional updates section)

Some optional updates are useful and should be installed, some like Bing related items, Silverlight aren't, since you don't mention the KB numbers it's really hard to answer that.

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

The three to not install/update are:

This one is just because my system doesn't have this problem:

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

I just recently received my last Windows update and with it, I had an optional update for my NVIDIA GForce 8400....so, I thought "cool", and went ahead and downloaded/installed it through Windows. Never had issues before doing it that way until now. I have my monitors set (obviously within Windows) to power-off after 10 minutes. However, when it comes back from that status (i.e. move the mouse, hit a key, etc.) it freezes for a sec, goes black AGAIN, and then brings the desktop BACK up again, this time giving me the message I attached below in a .jpg.

Anyone with the same hardware or driver set experiencing this same bug?

I'm posting this in the Vista forum because this has never happened with Windows 2000 or XP.

I bought two exact duplicate models of hard disks. I set up Vista Ultimate on one of my systems. I used Acronis True Image 10 to clone the operating disk to the factory-new, never-used, same model disk as a backup drive in the event the first disk failed. I put in the clone to be sure it runs; but, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

Now, if the second disk is supposed to be a clone of the first, why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I'm not married to Acronis for this job so I would use any disk cloning tool that makes a sector-for-sector copy. I use Norton Ghost 2003 for making sector-for-sector raw image (forensic) copies of PATA drives; but, these are SATA drives and Ghost 2003 simply sits there like Tarbaby and he don't say nuttin' to no SATA drive.

Hello all.

First off, I am in no means acquainted with any troubleshooting or fancy thing outside of everyday computer usage, so please respond as if you are talking to a dummy. I do have fairly decent common sense and Google skill however, which has given me enough confidence to try and fix this issue on my own.

Basically, one day I start my computer (running Windows XP Professional SP3) up and get a black screen saying:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this

Start in safe mode.
Safe mode with networking.
Safe mode with command prompt.
Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked).
Start Windows normally."

For a few times, I was able to get Windows working with the last two options, but before I could dedicate time to fix the issue, it became so that none of these options worked, and I got caught in a restart cycle with this screen. Last things that I can recall that may have caused this: Windows Update or CCleaner Registry Fix (just something I do sometimes to make sure everything is working, nothing was wrong prior).

I bought an external HDD enclosure with hopes of popping my internal into it, and saving my stuff onto my laptop before messing around. Oddly, in My Computer, the 2 drive icons (a System Recovery one, and my Main one) would flash for a few seconds, every few minutes, and when I'd quickly click them, it'd say the... Read more

BTW if it IS in fact possible to copy certain files from my laptop's OS, I just realized I can probably just copy those files into the desktop internal (when plugged in as an external) instead of going through the whole DOS thing? But keep in mind, that's the small 3GB partition, so I don't know if that would even work. Unless putting those boot files on that small partition, will help open up the rest of the drive. Not sure how that works.
EDIT: Apologies for the double post, just saw the "edit" button.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Hello,

I had Windows Update automatic checking for updates disabled, (with the necessary services for Windows update enabled). The last update was sometime back in February of 2016.

After manually activating Windows Update Windows Update was still running after 30 minutes. I then quit Windows Update and was going to wait till a later time to activate again.

However, after running some system cleaners I tried to activate Windows Update which produced an error message. IIRC the error message indicated a program and parameter was required to run Windows Update.

Current Windows Vista WindowsUpdateagent Version is 7.6.7600.256 (Vista x64).

Quite a while back I manually fixed Windows Update after it stopped working and has been working correctly up to now.

This time instead of a manual fix I tried to use MS fix-it program, However MS's current link to download the Fix-it program is not an exe file but a .cab file, uncertain why MS currently has a link to a .cab file instead of an .exe file?

Anyway instead of attempting a manual fix I found a MS windows update agent installation for Vista 64-Bit. After re-installation using the Windows Vista x64, windowsupdate exe file version 3.7.xxx Windows Update now displays a window with options stating that "Windows is up to date". A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

But there is no such "ScreenShots" folder there!
What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick?  Or is there a more complicated fix?

Working on an older Dell laptop for a friend (1.8ghz single-core, 1.5GB RAM) and cannot seem to get Windows Update to work...it will take hours to "check for updates" and then find some. I select the ones I want, install them, it claims they are "successful" and that the computer requires a restart. I restart to find they fail as the computer is restarting and that they continue failing as the computer comes back up after reboot.

I then check for updates again and get the same issue. It seems to install one or two updates each time, but the rest seem to fail (I know this as the owner has dial-up [I know, right? 0_o] and upon this last failure cycle, I now see the Win10 "reserve your copy" panel under Windows Update which was never there before.)

I've tried a few things in a few other threads including installing the December Windows Update update patch manually and I am still getting this issue...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi and welcome to the Forum
Is the Broadband connection working OK?
Where are you looking for the icon? Can you post a screenshot of the location where you expect to see the LAN icon?

I've recorded a Macro in which I select several ranges of cells within a worksheet to be cleared, clear them, then save. It seems straight forward enough, and I've done this multiple times before on other duplicate worksheets without issue; however, I've done this several times on this sheet, but every time results in the same error for the same line in the code for this particular worksheet.

I don't know enough about VBA (hense why I recorded the macro rather than writing it) to trouble shoot it. I could use some help. The macro is tied to a button, and appears when I click the button. Here's the code, and the line that is highlighted when the error pops up:

Why is Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update being listed as "Optional" under the Automatic Windows Update?
You actually have to choose it to be downloaded (since it is listed as optional), instead of MSE/Windows automatically downloading the definition.
If you do not manually select it to be downloaded, Windows will not automatically download the MSE definition.
Isn't it odd that a security definition update for MSE be listed as "Optional" in terms of "importance?" This happens in both Windows 7 and Windows Vista OS.

Any reasons or answers?

A:Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update being listed as "Optional" under Importance?

"They are marked optional in Windows Update because if they are ignored MSE will install the definitions at its regular daily update check." (official answer from

Even if many people set their Windows Update (incl. MS Update) settings to "check for updates and notify..." instead of "install updates automatically", I would strongly recommend the automatic setting. It's safer when MSE checks and updates the virus
signatures every time you start the computer (before you can do anything in Windows) than when it updates according to its own daily schedule. The difference is not huge but existent."192 GB ought to be enough for anybody." (from the miniseries "Next Generation's Jokes")

Note: I can't take any screen shots because my problematic laptop won't even start up fully.

So as a bit of background, my 6-year-old Toshiba A505-S6005 laptop battery has been horrible for ages (as in my laptop MUST be plugged in at all times or else it will immediately spontaneously turn off without a proper shut-down. It also spontaneously turns off it it overheats or starts working too hard or something), so I don't use it very much - but it's where I keep all my music and movies, and I've been gradually transferring these files to other devices, which is why I still use it occasionally...

Anyway, 2 nights ago, I downloaded and installed updates, and after taking a while to install updates, it stayed on the "shutting down..." screen for a long time... And when I woke up the next morning, it was STILL on the "shutting down" screen - and it had been 8 hours by that point (I was actually very surprised that it hadn't spontaneously turned off overnight). So I did a force-turn-off because I thought it would start up ok.

Today, I turned on the computer figuring it would boot up ok. So we get to the start-up screen - it even spends a mere split second on the usual improper-shut-down-how-would-you-like-to-start-up screen (it usually spends 30 seconds on that screen) and it goes through "configuring updates," and this took a while, and then it went back to the "shutting down..." screen. And it was stuck there for about 20 minutes be... Read more

It's been a month since my laptop gone wrong. All programs doesn't run properly, and stop working many times. Media Player, Office, Internet explorer, all stop working frequently, and I have to wait ten second until five minutes to continue my work.

Two days ago I noticed that when I downloaded windows update, the updates wasn't saved in OS folder like it used to be. New folders named like "1ee10074..." appeared in my hard disk. I realized that the problems begin when I found new folder like this in my hard disk, and now the problems is getting worst after updates. I thought my "OS" was full, but the indicator say "11.8 GB free of 58.5 GB".

I can't delete or move the folder without permission, and try to copy them to "OS". Now each time I open a file, two windows are opened, one is my opened file and the other is blank window.

I don't have enough knowledge about computer. Can anyone help me, please?

A:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Problem I was having once I completed my new build with old system parts was as listed in title. It started out as select proper boot device, and now it states ntldr is missing. From what I have been reading it seems as if my partition with my windows 7 install is not set active. I do not have my windows 7 DVD only my old vista DVD. I tried to boot into it to make use of CMD and attempt to make my partition active but I was unsuccessful to even get into CMD. I went into bios and forced booted from the drive with the OS and still same error, also I attempted to disable the other sata and run the computer again with no success also. Look forward to hearing from someone soon. I will be sitting by my laptop all night until this computer gets running.

Finally Got to command prompt but it shows my current drive listed as x: dunno if this will be relevant and helpful to anyone.

Okay, I have an ATI Radeon 8500 on my Windows XP system, and one day, after my dad had used the computer, the 3D video driver stoppeed working. He can't recall doing anything. So it goes. I think "whatever", downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers, and try to install it, only to get the message "INF Error, Video Driver Not Found" and then "Try to set up your adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup". I tried googling for info (apparently it's a common-ish issue), but I never found anything that worked. I tried uninstalling anything ATI and then installing, to no avail. I tried uninstalling the error-listed VGA adapter from the Device Manager and then running install which didn't work. Rebooting after that also didn't work (it popped up with "New hardware found" after the reboot, but it couldn't find the proper drivers).

After an unedifying series of adventures I got to http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=45&kind=1 which has several drivers for my mobo. I first downloaded (obviously) the VGA driver, and tried to run setup. Unfortunately, after preparing the install, an Error message pops up saying "The system cannot detect the device, please confirm that the device is configured properly and restart the setup program." I then tried downloading the AGP upgrade, installed it, but nothing changed. I also downloaded the BIOS update, since it mention... Read more

A:"INF Error", VGA Driver "Missing" Installing ATI Catalyst Drivers

the radeon is not integrated with your motherboard, and the onboard video has probably been disabled in the BIOS. to install the appropriate drivers for an ATI radeon 8500 card you need to download and install the drivers from ati's website. from there you can download the latest version of catalyst and install that.

The files in one of my folders aren't showing up. It's only that specific folder that is having problem. Whenever I try to access it, no files show up even though there are clearly files in it (Properties say 20.5 GB). And it will always stuck at "not responding"

This is what it looks like:

http://i.imgur.com/p2bCy4s.jpg?1

I've found a possible solution but since it deals with command prompt, I want to make sure I don't make things worse. I need to know what exactly the following command does:

attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*, in which g is the drive letter.

This video: says it reveals hidden folders but I'm not sure if it's relates to my problem exactly since Properties doesn't have "Hidden" checked. It only has "Read-Only" checked under the General tab.

My friend's computer seemingly got a virus, since it sent an email to somebody in her email list, on its own. She asked me to take a look.

She had a virus checker, but it had never been updated. So I installed "AVGfree" and ran that. It found a "trojan horse" virus as well as some other stuff that it said should be removed, so I did. I then ran "ccleaner" and it suggested to remove a TON of crap, like 500mb worth of files (she installs dumb stuff on her computer all the time). I removed these files. Then I ran "spybot" and it removed some stuff. I then defragged, which it needed.

So here I am, feeling like a hero, but then I reboot and there's a message saying that "lsass.exe" cannot be found. I cancel this message, and then there's another message saying that "ipwins.dll" cannot be found.

I tell her to just ignore these messages until I figure it out, but then she informs me today that she cannot access her email account on her computer. So I've gotta figure out how to fix this.

Any advice?? Thanks.

A:After virus checking and cleaning, "lsass.exe" and "ipwins.dll" missing

She could try the system file checker : tell her to prepare her XP CD (she'll need it if it asks to replace the missing files), then she will have to go to start => run, and type "sfc /scannow".

If that fails, she can perform a repair install if she has an OEM, retail or upgrade XP CD (recovery CD's cant' do that). She will have to boot on the cd, thus she needs first to change the boot order in the bios to CD-rom first. Then, when XP setup loads, choose the option "To setup Windows XP now" (not the one about recovery console). On the next screen (after the licence agreement) she should be given the option to repair her current xp installation by typing R.

Once that's done, if the CD wasn't a SP2 version, first thing is to go to windows update to reinstall XP SP2 and all updates she could have done since. Don't surf on the internet before any antivirus and firewall (either windows or another) is enabled.
