I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys wonder if any of you can help you with a query I have....

I am helping a friend with a Compaq Presario C500 (C542EA) laptop, essentially it came with Windows Vista and we want to run XP on it.

I am having some serious issues locating XP drivers for

PCI modem
Audio
Wireless NIC

Does anyone know what hardware this machine runs for these devices? Having hunted around the internet I am hitting brick walls attempting to find XP drivers for this machine. I am hoping this is not a situation where Vista needs to be reloaded on to the machine in order to get it up and running!

It seems that the HP website does have audio and modem drivers (but not wireless NIC) however when i have run the drivers it states that its not for the hardware installed!

Any help would be appreciated!

Nick

A:Compaq Presario C500 Xp Drivers

The HP site has some drivers for XP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3357417 (are these the ones you've tried?)

Try the Wireless drivers from the Vista drivers section, it may support other versions of Windows too: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3357417

Also are you sure that its a C542EA, double check the sticker on the bottom.

Hello,

This is a completely hardware related issue. I have had my Compaq Presario C500 laptop for a couple of years now, and I've noticed that it's getting pretty dusty. A computer store wanted to charge me $60 for just removing dust from the laptop, so I decided to do it myself. The problem is that for some reason I just can't open the casing of my laptop. I'm pretty computer literate, but I'm a bit unfamiliar with hardware. Here is a picture of the laptop that I will try to use to describe my problem.

I unplugged the laptop and removed the battery, of course. I then removed all the srews that I could see from the back casing [which you can't see from the picture]. While I could slightly open the sides of the casing, It wouldn't come off. After searching online, I read about a different laptop that had screws underneath a panel that is just above the keyboard and is below the screen hinges on the front side of the laptop. This seemed to be the case with my laptop as well, so I took off the panel [it's where you can see the power, wifi, and sound buttons] and I removed those screws as well.

The back casing opened up a bit more, since those screws were apparently attached to the back case, but still only slightly. I can't actually get to the fan. There seems to be at least something else at the bottom of the photograph, below the touchpad, where the laptop closes, and where the speakers are that is holding the casing togeth... Read more

Hi.
So, recently, my mom gave me her old Compaq Presario C500 laptop. Before recently, it had Windows XP SP3 on it, with full driver installations, etc.

A little back story: My dad bought this computer for my mom. It had Vista on it. My dad Nuked Vista using DBAN (www.dban.org) and installed XP. He was up till like midnight getting drivers from tech support.

I got it, nuked it with DBAN by request of my mom, and reinstalled XP. The XP drivers available for the laptop were not base drivers, they were updates, AND only for certain things.

So basically, I need to know, should I download Vista drivers for XP, or will it fail?

also, this computer is totally out of warranty, so I can't call tech support.

Thanks!

Hi, I've got a hp/compaq laptop that has been having screen issues for awhile. It started as a couple vertical lines on the right side of the screen and has grown over the past couple of months. My friend said it was from the ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard being pinched or faulty. If I applied pressure in certain ways to the screen i could make the lines go away. So anyway, flash forward to today and I open up my laptop and my screen is a mess of liquid colors. There is a spidering of cracks originating from the bottom of the screen and when I pushed on them the screen proceed to crack all the way across it. There are multiple fractures in there now and teh screen is obviously screwed. My laptop is still under warranty however. I called up tech support and they said they would send a box and I would ship it to hp and it would take 7-10 days and if it was determined that the problem was caused due to an accident they would call me.

My question is this: the screen is definitely cracked, I don't know what happened but I did not physically drop it as far as I know. I don't know what criteria they use to determine this, but I don't want to send my laptop in only to find out a week later that they are saying I broke it and it is not covered under warranty and then charge me an arm and a leg for the service and new screen. My laptop is crucial for my work and I need it serviced as fast as possible, especially considering my desktop just crapped o... Read more

A little history of the laptop: I bought the laptop used from a friends and All the keys work except "O", "L" and the period. I bought a brand new replacement keyboard and those buttons worked fine, for awhile. I finally bought a new Wwindows Vista cd and installed it on the laptop, since it was supposed to have Vista and it had XP for whatever reason. Still nothing, when I unplug the keyboard ribbon and plug it back in, the keys work for a while and then stop. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

This seems like a very interesting problem.
The laptop is a few years old, the problem seems to have gotten worse over the last few weeks, and i have an idea of what it may be related to.

first off, its a compaq presario c500, vista home premium, SP1, pretty basic. After years of use, one of the metal hinges for the screen broke in half, so as it sits, there is only one hinge. i thought it was okay, it just wouldnt hold the screen up at much of an angle, but it will if its pretty vertical.
i cant recall when the freezing issue first started, but its been a while. I noticed first when i would close it, and move rooms or something, then open it up, it would be frozen. only way to reset is hold the power button. ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I noticed one time that when i pushed buttons it made a beeping/error chime, but that was only once. just today i had music going, i closed the lid, left it playing, then the second i opened it, it started skipping. so it seems it froze when i opened it. then i went to push the power button, and i pushed the network/wifi button first on accident, which didnt turn the light off for it, BUT upon restart, it was off.
im wondering if its related to the hinge not being there, if it had caused some kind of stress somewhere that opening/closing creates on an interior component. i have done updates and such fairly recently, so it should be pretty well updated. the monitors driver is up to date.

thanks in advance!

A:Compaq Presario C500 Laptop freezes when re-opening the lid.

Hi rycdavis,What you describe could be caused by a lot of different things.First off, if you have your Vista OS up to date it should be SP2, would you double check that please? The next things that come to my mind are all more hardware related than Vista. As you suspect, the hinge may well be the culprit. Laptops have wires leading from the base to the display, and also usually have some sort of switches that are activated by opening and closing the lid. Why these things would cause system freezes puzzles me, though.Another thing common with laptops is dust build up inside the case. Try looking here at the Compaq website for tips on cleaning inside your c500. It appears there are several models of the c500, look at the information plate on the bottom of the computer, are there more letters following the 'C500' (e.g.CTO)? Click here to go to Compaq's Presario C500 CTO page. The last thing that comes to mind is the CMOS battery could be failing. These can cause all sorts of odd behaviors before they fail completely. Please let us know how what you find.

Did you go into the BIOS and make sure that the boot priority is set to the DVD drive? Sounds like its actually just going on to the hard drive when its in there and blue screening. If it is set to boot to the DVD drive first and it still goes to the hard drive, disable all other boot options or set them all to DVD drive so it either fails to boot at all or boots to the DVD drive. Also make sure there are no USB devices plugged in to avoid any possible confusion.

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

My friend has a Compaq Presario 5340, which I might say is being a real pain! She dropped it off to me yesterday to try to fix.
Here is my problem(s): The computer starts up fine until it gets to the Windows98 screen then it hangs. She had stated it was running slow then this problem has surfaced. I have been in the MSconfig and did a selective startup bypassing the Autoexec and config files, as stated by troubleshooters in Win98. I also have used the quick restore cd's that she has and the same thing still happens, it hangs on Win98 screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions or more troubleshooting to do before I boot it out the door? A friend has a Presario X1300. It has a small problem. The power button only works once in a while (perhaps 1 in 20 presses). I thought perhaps it was a cold solder joint but even after touching up the button's pads its still has the problem.

It could be a bad switch, it looked like the switch had previously been replaced (although he hasn't had it serviced except to put in a new hard drive about a month before the switch went bad).

I found a post that indicated that someone found schematics for the motherboard and I was hoping that someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. I didn't find them on google. I'm going to replace the switch first, but if that doesn't work I have to assume there's some other problem that will need debugged.

I hate to see such a nice laptop go to waste because of a stupid power on problem.

I have found the service manual online. Its great, but has no schematics.

Thanks for any ideas you can offer.

the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.

I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.

Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.

A:Compaq Presario 2500

Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.

Hi this is my first post so bare with me.

I have a compaq presario 2580us laptop first of all with a pentium 4 in it.

My question is this. My laptop has 3 fans in it and they all used to come on in the past. Only one(the biggest) has been working not sure how long it has just been the one either. My temps get up to around 127F. I am just just wondering if there is a way to check out why the other 2 fans are not working. If there is some setting that I could check that would be great. Any assistance would be so nice.

Thank you,

Jackie

I did this on a machine at work 2 weeks ago. Check hp.com, do the auto detect thing, and update the bios. should solve the problem.

hope it helps.

My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.

This is what it says....

First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.

This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more

I was trying to upgrade my brother's Compaq 5340 from Windows 98 to XP. I kept giving me errors on the C: drive but would continue to work in Win98. I moved the valuable files onto another drive and formated C:

Now I cannot install anything on drive C: . None of my Windows installationd discs with work with it.

It keeps saying that there is a compressed file or directory on the drive or that it is write protected.

I booted of A: drive with a Win98 startup disc but cannot access C: drive.

What Is going on? Did I screw something up?

A:Compaq Presario 5340

Boot off a floppy disk and FDISK the drive - remove all the partitions and then create a new Active/Primary partition. Also make sure that Antivirus/Bootector protection is off in the BIOS. Then boot off the XP cd and format the drive and do the install. To boot off the CD you need to set thej boot order to CD-ROM, A, HDD in the bios. You can also delete the partition from the XP cd if you boot off it.

I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.

Help!!!

A:Compaq Presario won't boot!

I'm desperate, guys! Is there any other information I can give you to help resolve my problem? I have the Easy Transfer Cable for Vista all ready to go (and the software loaded in the old computer before I disconnected it and moved it to the card table), but I can't get my Compaq to boot.

If you can't help me, I guess I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow and let the Geek Squad have at it...

Hi Guys,

I Have a Compaq Presario SR1000 and I ended up getting a virus on the machine. Now I cant boot in to windows or safemode, but I know the harddrive is partitioned.

I dont have the manual or boot disks for the computer anymore, does anyone know the command for these machines to access the partion?

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:Solved: Compaq Presario

The manual doesn't say .. But I'd try the F10 key at Bootup.

You can also Email HP support and see if they know ...
... and If you can still get the recovery CDs ..
[email protected]

Does this computer have a sticker on the side .. or somewhere ....
That tells the M$ product code for the operating system installed ???

I have a problem with my laptop screen. The screen is dark, however, the data is still there. Can't turn lamp on, or change anything, but can hook up to a monitor and it works. Can I fix the screen to work again? If I hit the button that turns the screen off and closes the computer down, the picture pops up for a few seconds and it is slightly red.

A:Compaq presario R3000

Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.

Here's how: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/

Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?

A:Compaq Presario won't turn on

Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)

Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
Turn on!

If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On

If so try reinstalling the Trident Display Driver from the available downloads.

We have a very old Presario 4550, connected to an old cathode tube display and we also can't find a functional printer with old fashioned connectors. There are two USB ports on the back of the tower - could we connect a more modern display and printer to this tower using the USB ports?

Hi there @stevekra, May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I understand that you are looking for help with the a printer for your older model computer.  I am happy to help with this. I am assuming the printer connection type you are looking for is an old parallel or Centronics connection.  That connection type is no longer being used in newer printers, and as far as I know has not been for many years, having been replaced by USB, Ethernet and Wireless connections. Any printer with a Centronics connector is going to about as old as the computer you are working with.   Now it is possible you can get a printer with a USB connection to work, but depending on what operating system you have installed and the capabilities of your USB ports this may also be an issue. Your system is likely using USB 1.x ports, whereas the current standard is 2.x or 3.x. Your hardware and/or OS may not be able to recognize newer devices, and the drivers avaialbe for those devices may be for Windows 8.x or 10.  I am not saying it is impossible, but that you are going to have some forseeable challenges getting devices to work. You may find that you will need to make a wholesale upgrade to the system to work with newer devices, and it may be better to look at a newer system. Just my two cents. Please let me know whether that works for you, a... We have an old 2001 compaq 5020 computer. The last screen you see when you shut it down is , it is now safe to turn off your computer and then you have to shut it down manually. How can we change this to turn off automatically. We are running Windows XP.
Thanks

A:Compaq Presario 5020

Hello bilmac1. Probably, when Windows was installed, it failed to recongize the BIOS as ACPI compatible. Or simply, APM is not enabled: check under "Power Options Properties" if the tab "APM" exists; if so, check the option "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" (if it's checked, uncheck it, weird as it sounds).

If any here has an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC or Notebook (current models), they will notice that the fan kicks in when needed. The fan doesn't really annoy me as much on my Compaq laptop, but on my HP desktop it is really annoying and loud. I think it forgot that it was only supposed to come on when needed because it is now on almost all the time. Can someone explain to me how this fan works in more detail and how I can possibly adjust when it comes on or at least the fan speed, SOMETHING!!! Thanx in advance.

A:HP/Compaq Pavilion/Presario Fan

If the fan kicks in more then it used to it might mean that the computer needs a cleaning. These fans are temperature controlled and only kick in when a sensor detects the temperature to be at a certain level. Sone fans need to be on at all times - like the one on the CPU - but it may be possible to control it speed with software or BIOS settings.

Speedfan comes to mind, do a google search for it. It will list the motherboard temps and allow fan speed adjustment if the board supports it. If you have a case fan you can control its speed, as for the CPU fan - thats best left on a full speed.

First, open up the case and see if it needs a cleaning. You can also replace stock fans with quieter ones if they are too loud or wearing out.

The D: drive is a "restore partition" = RP. This is an exact image of your computer when you first bought it. To use it: When you first start the computer there will be a black screen with probably three different choices of keys to press. One of them will be something like system restore or restore. Hope you get the idea. Select the proper key and follow the onscreen prompts. One other option may be to go to the HP\Compaq (HP bought Compaq) site or call them. You may be able to get the discs for a small fee.
