Laptop crashes when plug in ASDL cable...

Q: Laptop crashes when plug in ASDL cable...

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet with my Acer Aspire laptop using an ASDL cable coming from a router.

The account username and password are set up. When I insert the ADSL ethernet cable in to my laptop, and click 'Connect' in the dial up box, it goes through the dialling, check password etc, and in 2 seconds, I am online, and it shows as connected in the bottom right of the screen, with the speed (100Mps).

Then, my laptop just freezes. The mouse won't move, and everything is frozen. not even the Ctrl Alt Del works. I've left it at least 20 minutes and nothing happens so I have to reset. On re-startup, it goes to a blue screen and prompts to run a file check of FAT 32(?).

Have tried this a few times, all with the same result. I usually connect via WIFI at home, but I am in Beijing for 2 weeks, using a friends internet cable. Works fine on his laptop (this one- ThinkPad X41) so not the internet thats causing the problem. Have connected to the interent via cable before in England with no such probs (although that was with a USB cable - not sure if that makes any difference?)

If anyone could help, I'd be so grateful - really need my laptop. I'm using Windows XP, and have the basic Norton Security service that comes on a free trial basis with most new laptops.

Thanks in hope...

Preferred Solution: Laptop crashes when plug in ASDL cable...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would check your computer for a virus or spyware before looking at any other causes. Freezing up after connecting to the internet may be a sign there is a trojan virus or other ansty at work.

My friend uses a cable modem to connect directly to the Internet using Ethernet port.

He is using 2 network adapters. one adapter (PCI) is for his modem and the other one is for network (connected to an 8-port hub from a built-in network/ethernet port which originally on the motherboard). He doesn't want to share his internet connection with others on the same network. So, he installed a PCI adapter for his modem in order for him to connect to internet. OK, his modem is working fine with 2 adapters!

Weeks ago, he called me and asked me to fix his computer because the system is running sooo slow. OK, I went there & JUST run SpyBot - Search & Destroy. Then ok, his cpu run better/faster.

Just a week ago, he called me again that his Internet connection was not working well after I did the cleaning. Now, no connectivity at all!

I checked everything & I noticed the ASDL light on his modem is blinking simultaneously. & I noticed his TCP/IP protocol is 169.254.xx.xx which I believe is a 'failed' IP. Or should I say, the ISP refuses to assign dynamic IPs to his PC.

Am I correct?

I've tried everything. ipconfig /release & /renew but still fail.

I'm surely think this has got to do with the ISP. Only by calling/reporting to the ISP could solve this problem. Correct???

A:Cable Modem: ASDL light blinking (Failed to connect to ISP)

I'm not sure exactly what your frirend did.. Did he get a new internal DSL modem or did he get a new network adapter?

In case of a new modem it may just be that his ISP doesn't support it or there is something wrong with the settings.

In case of a new NIC it may be that the ISP wants to see the MAC address of the old adapter.

I have a VAIO VGN-AR61S running Vista Premium

Having a Blue ray drive, I wish to play HD movies on my TV... However, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my machine crashes.

If it is already plugged in, my machine won't boot up.... It reports a Hardware error.

If I plug in when up and running.... 'crash'......blue screen.

In panic I didn't take note of error codes....and I obviously don't wish to repeat the exercise .

Any suggestions would be greatfully received.

When I connect the HDMI cable to the TV, I see nothing on the screen and my laptop starts to blink until it causes an error to the graphics card and sometimes the computer crashes, checked several HDMI cables and that's not the problem. Any suggestions what causes this?
Thanks for the help.

A:Connecting HDMI cable to TV crashes laptop

Sounds like a resulution issue, go into controll panel, and make sure under display that you select hdmi only, this will use your tv as main screen, dont split it, most laptops have a shortcut key that when pressed auto switches the screen, this avoids errors and crashes, the main reason for crashes on dual screens i found was the resolution differance, the pc cant decide on which to follow, the crashes(this was way back on old screens). So set laptop resolution to full, make sure it set not to split the screen, but to use the tv as hdmi only. Obviously upgrade your grafix drivers, and see if it helps. Have a look on your laptop for a key that alows screen switching, its usually second function keys on the "F" keys, on my laptop its secondfunction F5, this makes things allot easier.

Hope it helps

Hi all, Some time ago my Ideapad U530 Touch fell from my desk. It hit perfectly on the ac power supply plug-in and it broke the male connector on the cord and it appears that the female connector on the laptop is damaged as well. The pictures attached are the best I could do. The plug on the laptop may or may not be ruined, I'm not sure but I think I remember a small metallic part that broke off of it. The "damage" that is visible in the pictures looks to me like just scratches on the paint/color but I'm not sure.  Like I said this was a while ago and I'm just now getting around to fix it. I was looking for parts just now, first for the cord to see if that would be all that I needed, but I was also looking for a schematic to find the part on the laptop and to see if it was a part of the motherboard so I could have an idea of what this was going to cost me. I discovered that there is no schematic (that I could find.) The cords offered for this laptop all had "expired" labeled on them and the cart button was greyed out and not functioning so I couldn't even price it. Can someone let me know how I might proceed with repairing my laptop? It is almost three years old. If the cost is prohibitive (the whole motherboard must be replaced because the power supply plug is an integral part of it or whatever) then can you let me know the easiest and/or cheapest way to get the data off the hard drive? The battery is long past dead so it won't even fire up for me to... Read more

Hi their first of all my computer spec:

I have a thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS case, Asus P5KC motherboard, windows 7 ultimate 64bit, Intel Quad core Q6600 CPU, 2GB corsair XMS DDR2 800mhz RAM, 1TB Samsung spinpoint hard-drive, DVD-drive

what it is, I bought my new case ( the thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS) a couple of weeks ago, so obviously I had to swap all my hardware into it from my older case.
Everything worked perfectly in my older case, its when I swapped everything to my new case that I started having problems with my DVD drive.
When I connect the IDE and power cable upto it, and switch my computer on their is no power getting to the drive, well no lights light up, flicker or do anything.
But once i turn my computer off and remove the IDE cable, but leave the power cable in, the DVD drive powers up, the draw opens and closes like normal, it only doesnt come on when the IDE cable is plugged in.

The DVD drive is set to master, this is IDE
My hard-drive is SATA so thats automatically goes to master.

The dvd drive is not detected in the BIOS ( revision 1203)

I have checked the IDE connector on the motherboard its-self and none of the pins or damaged or bent etc, I have even tried a new IDE cablr but the same happens.

Please can you help me thank you.

Had a similar problem moving an optical drive to the secondary IDE port on new computer a while ago. Had to change the jumper on the drive from Master to Cable Select (CS) to get it to work. It might be worth trying on your computer. You would need an IDE cable that supports CS with gray and black connectors for the drives.

Can I plug in the power cable to a sata drive (already connected to sata port on mobo), while the computer is on.

With that drive connected Windows will not boot (I never have had a problem with the drive before, even when installing windows). If I remember right, a few years ago, I moved the pagefile to that drive, and it also had a boot.ini file on it (for some reason) I wonder if that is the problem (never until now), because when that drive is installed windows hangs at starting windows.

A:Plug in a sata power cable

If the SATA controller is set to AHCI mode, and the SATA port the drive is on is set to allow "hot-swap", then yes you could. If not, then no you can't.

You should post a screenshot of your Disk Management window with the problem drive connected. Expand the window so everything can be read.

Hello guys , i have a problem with my desktop pc and I really can't find a solution to it. Recently , I started to get dc and the only way of making it work again was to turn off my modem, wait 10 seconds and then restart the pc. Recently i was downloading a game from steam and after 3/25 gb it dc again. Troubleshooter reported 2 problems. The first with an red x stating that an ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or it might be broken (my cable is new and it works fine) and one with a yellow triangle stating that local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration. Ok so I gave up and did 2 things: first i checked my hardware. They said it works perfectly . Then I unplugged my modem thinking that this was the problem. I plugged the cable directly into my pc and had to use dial-up connection. Ok , i entered the user and pass , connected and after a few days of perfect connection i've decided to resume the download. After downloading another gb it crashed again . So out of frustration i took my pc to my friend and used his connection for the download . It worked perfectly . Now i am back home and guess what? After trying to download a large file it crashed again and now it won't even connect back. i. Have never seen something like this , it just collapses if it uses up more that 3-4 mb/s . Now the troubleshooter says the swme about the cable and the ip . My settings are to obtain an automatic ip ... My driver is fine , my cable is fine , wireless on laptop wor... Read more

A:Plug an ethernet cable into this computer ????

I would first try power cycling both the modem and router. unplug both and wait about a minute; then plug the modem back in first; and let that boot; then plug the router back in and let it boot. Also, check for a firmware upgrade for your router. If there is one; download and install it. Once that is done.I would go into the device manager in the control panel and uninstall any either net related connections and or devices. Any onboard network cards; uninstall them and let reboot and let windows hopefully detect it and reinstall the proper drivers, etc for it. Try any or all of these things and see if they help ya out any.

I have a laptop that i received from my father about 5 months or so, it's pretty old because it was the vista model and I usually play games like LoL, SC Brood war, Warcraft 3 and Osu. Today I was using my laptop and i went away to clean my pet's cage then when i came back, my screen was black unnaturally. I thought that it was just some random problem that wasn't really that harmful until I tried turning the computer back up again with surprising results. When I booted the laptop again it took me to the screen where you got to chose whether you can solve what the problem was that made the computer suddenly shut down or just boot regularly. I tried to ust boot it up regularly when suddenly it rebooted again. It repeated this process about 5 times when I had enought and got a bit frustrated and slapping my laptop. It then showed up bluescreens for the next 4 hours or so. I plugged everything out that was on the laptop, my Blue Snowball microphone, Royche Optical mouse, ethernet cable and my Sony Stereo Headphones MDR- XD200. Finally after a bit when the bluescreens and blackscreens didn't appear I quickly went otn the website to search this up and also went on my anti-virus programs to clear any malwares or viruses. I don't know what's wrong with my laptop, and I don't know if my laptop will act weird again if i plug in my accessories.

Just out of curiosity, are you connected 24/7 as for dsl line, or are you dial-up, and do you plug in the ethernet cable while the system is live, or do you do it while the system is turned off.

Plug in the cable while the system is turned off, or reboot your computer with the cable connected. When the OS reboots, it should be able to detect that the cable is not disconnected from the ethernet hardware and boot successfully.

You should also check the ethernet card mfg website for an up-to-date driver for your ethernet card to make sure it has the latest driver.

Hope this helps,

I am running xp pro on a homebuilt computer I got from a friend (no idea what any of the specs are). recently, it has begun crashing whenever I try to plug in a usb device.

Any usb device (HDD, flash drive, ipod, camera) causes this problem. the computer will freeze for a moment or two and then it restarts. but right before it restarts, the zip drive (or sometimes the floppy drive) clicks & the light lights up as if trying to read a disk that isn't there.

If I leave the usb drive in while restarting, the same will happen. A click from the drive, and the computer restarts again. This will happen over and over until i take out the usb and then it will restart normally.

Funny thing is, I have both a usb keyboard and mouse that run absolutely fine with no problems.

Any thoughts on the problem? I really want to get this fixed so i can actually use my computer again. Thanks
by the way, a couple more details: this will happen in any of the usb ports on the computer. I am also able to plug/unplug the keyboard without issue.

When I look in device manager, the monitor is listed as a generic plug/play device. Do I need to manually install a driver from teh manufacturer? Previously, when just plugging the monitor directly to the machine with no cable the display looked fine, but now it doesn't look as good.

You'd be better of with a long high quality cable then using an extension.

Good Day,

When we watch Netflix movies, it will load, then start and stop during the movie , very often it will slow, stop and freeze and an error message stating that "Silverlight plug-in has crashed" is displayed and an offer to send an error report ( I've sent many, now just get out that window ).

I have updated Silverlight, same error occurs. I was on the net looking for solutions and this web site & combofix were recommended a number of times. So I'm here hoping for guidance.

I have recently upgraded my internet connection to adsl. However, when I explore with IE or FireFox and/download with either, the connection hangs and then dies. However, in the "View all connections" folder, it is still connected. Also, I can't access the modem (D-Link DSL-500) via its IP address. To get back online I have to reestablish the connection either by disabling and reenabling, or if that doesnt work, restarting the moedm and computer. According to my ISP's Tesh Support, its because my phone cable is too long (25 metres); they recommend a maximum of 3 metres. Now my computer is at least 10 metres away from the nearest phoneline port, with no way to move it closer. So from what I can tell, I have a couple solutions to try:

1) Attempt use with a new 10 metre phone cable.

or probably the better option,

2) Move the modem less than three metres form the phoneline port, and then run CAT5e/6 cable from there to my computer. With this option, I'd like to know, do CAT5/5e/6 cables have the same restrictions that the phone cables do; ie, less than 3 metres?

Anything else I could try?

Thanks in advance.

please help.... i installed an ADSL router on Friday afternoon and went browsing Saturday and Sunday, on Monday morning i got the unusual "page not found" in explorer. It seems completely that the model goes into some standby/hibernation. when restarting the modem all goes well while you keep on surfing/downloading/streaming but as soon as u leave it 4 a while , same problems. i installed a program called [email protected] witch pings all the ip's on my network and i found that sometimes the router gives no reply....time out. this problem can be bypassed by refreshing pages like 20 times or by streaming audio or by programs like connection keeper, but its not always possible as connection keeper only pings every minute and streaming audio gives me a bandwidth problem!!

i contacted my service provider , they say there is no problem with the modem or cable connection , but i doubt their expertise as they only tested once with pings. i contacted the manufacturer of the modem "Marconi"! they said it could be firmware related but the waiting period 4 exchange is 2 weeks. i cant wait that long.

my network details: 4 PC's running win98 1PC running win2000 1 netware3.12 server. all is connected via the same lan. i considered win xp but its not compatible with my dos based programs on the netware server (witch i cant go without)

any ideas ?????????
thank you

A:ASDL over network problems.......

Without knowing the model of modem, it's difficult to diagnose, is there an 'connect on demand' or similar on the ADSL side of the router ? many ISP's activley disconnect customers that use 'keepalive' software, the only exception i've found is Outlook or similar autoretreiving mail from an external POP3 server.
ps. whereabouts in SA ? spent 3 months working there in '94 and been many times since...

I switched from a usb modem to a Dlink modem with Belkin Pre-N router recently. After hooking up the Dlink 300T, I was able to access most websites but not a few others such as xe.com, boston.com and washingtonpost.com to mention a few. I switched back to my BT usb modem and everything worked fine (I'm in London needing to read the news from home). Also some links within websites did not work, even the dlink link for a firmware upgrade. Very odd.

I telephoned Dlink and they sent me a replacement but I had exactly the same problem. I returned the Dlink to the reseller and they sent a Hayes Zoom modem which worked fine for a few days so I thought I had the problem resolved.

Four days later the very same problem with the dlink cropped up on the Hayes modem. Very, very strange. I've been on tech support with the manufacturers and the internet provider and I've checked all my settings on the computer. I've reset the modem to the original default setting and still the same. I do not have any parental filters or the sort turned on. My laptop works perfectly at the wifi cafe and with the usb modem. I only have problems when I connect to an ethernet modem at home. Does this have anything to do with the signal I am getting from the provider? Why would it work for a few days and then the same problem occurs? I've run anit-virus, anti-spy and system restore.

Can anyone please help as you can understand, I am completely frustrated. Tech support guys all... Read more

In the past I have had similar problems because I did not choose a private network address for my ethernet - what is the ethernet address used in you router - you can find out by typing "ipconfig" at the dos prompt when your laptop is connected to the modem/router by the ethernet cable

I wonder if someone could help with a networking issue as I'm a bit of a doughnut with these things to say the least lol.
My Daughter recently got a Belkin router with build-in asdl modem and a Dell lap top. Now we actually access the Internet via an NTL broadband cable modem not via an Asdl connection but she has still been able to access the internet ok via the wireless card in her laptop with the router plugged into the Ntl cable modem. The problem is I purchased a Belkin wireless adaptor for our one year old desktop pc and it picks up the wireless network with a very good signal but it just cannot connect to the internet, I just get the stock dns error page (although my daughter swears it did connect for 15 minutes on Sunday). I've checked the Ipconfig and that seems to be to the correct address as stated in other postings on here.

The thing is is there likely to be a problem with my router's config or is the problem that the router has a Asdl modem we are trying to bypass (although it doesn't seem a problem with the laptop) ? I don't want to have to send the router back if I don't have to obviously will if it comes to that . Any help would be appreciated.

A:Belkin Wireless router with built-in Asdl modem

The router isn't that good as you're getting those DNS errors. I was getting those too. The Router makes a good Access Point or a small SPI/NAT Hardware Firewall. That's about it. There are other choices out ther that's better than the Belkin.

Belkin 1 ant wireless 54G dsl/cable router
Belkin 2 ants wireless 54G Plus with high speed 125mbp dsl/cable router

Both are slow and give dns errors... You could try to reset them and maybe lucky to get them to work, but they hang, get so hot they crash an etc. A lot of reboots also.
