Seagate firmware update FreeDOS/Linux

Q: Seagate firmware update FreeDOS/Linux

I own a S440 and I like to upgrade the firmware for the Seagate SHDD ( http://support.lenovo.com/de/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-S-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-S44...) There is no bootable iso or anything I can use directly. At least I need the correlation between the extracted *.LOD files and the compatibles HDD. Seagte does not have any further information about this firmware upgrade. (https://apps1.seagate.com/downloads/request.html , Part Number: 1EJ162-073) I guess some OEM restrictions.FreeDOS did not work. with this guide you could at least try to flash the firmware under *nix:https://github.com/jandelgado/general/wiki/Firmware-update-of-Seagate-harddisk-using-Linux Which firmware file do I need? (ST500LM000-SSHD-8GB)Why lenovo do not release at least a bootable WinPE for flashing firmwares?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-9YN162 like the one shown on this firmware update page:

Barracuda (1TB/disk platform) Firmware Update

Because i've been having problems waking from sleep mode I wanted to update the firmware on it from my version now CC9B to its current version of CC9D. I downloaded its windows update utility and ran it. Everything seemed ok, it shut down windows, restarted, ran the updater, then it said "FAILED" in big red letters then asked me to go back to Windows. I did, everything was ok nothing got messed up.

Why did it fail to update the firmware? Was it because I didn't have CC9C and it didn't want to skip from CC9B to CC9D? Do I need to update to CC9C first? What should I do?

The update utility says that it cant be run on "RAID Systems". My system is capable of RAID but I dont have a raid setup i use ACHI. Do I need to go into my BIOS and disable something that has to do with RAID? As far as I know I have nothing enabled that has to do with RAID. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Seagate HDD Firmware update failed. Why?

I suspect that if your drive is not listed here: ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES - see here - Seagate Community Forums
Which I don't see, a firmware update is not needed nor compatible with the update.

I suggest you right click windows logo (or click yellow folder), click and expand 'File Explorer', 'This PC', and then check to see if Seagate update is either in your downloads or documents. If yes, I suggest you open the file and click 'Run As Administrator'.

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 on a recently-purchased X1 Extreme gen 2. The installed BIOS version is 1.26. I looked in the Drivers & Software page and I see that 1.27 was released on 29 October. However, running `fwupdmgr --get-updates` says "No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.26: 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older". How long does it usually take for firmware updates to be available via fwupdmgr? Should I manually update? I downloaded the BIOS Update Utility for Linux and the README. The directions in the README are clear, but nowhere do I see the 20QVCTO1WW ID mentioned above and want to make sure that I have the correct files. The BIOS Update Utility download is called `n2oul06w.zip` and contains 3 CAB files: N2OET40P.cab, N2OET40W.cab and N2OHT32W.cab. Is this the right file? Which one should I apply? Thanks in advance,-Mario.

The linux version of the latest BIOS/ECP firmware (1.44/1.18) for the X1 Carbon 4th gen (type 20FB and 20FC) and X1 Yoga 1st gen (types 20FQ, 20FR) was released Aug 2 (n1ful37w.zip) https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Direct link: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ful37w.zip That .zip file contains two .cab files, N1FET70W.cab and N1FHT35W.cab, for the BIOS and ECP respectively. Updating the BIOS in linux for my X1 Carbon 20FB worked fine for me with fwupdmgr, but failed for the ECP. This was because the metadata for the ECP update has a typo. Inside the N1FHT35W.cab file is a firmware.metainfo.xml, with a GUID of: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb7bc72d96b9c3 This is incorrect. It's missing a dash, and should read: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb-7bc72d96b9c3 Modifying this file within the .cab (or extracting it and generating a new .cab) and then flashing that with fwupdmgr fixed the problem. I've attached the modified .cab file (nested in a .zip file for upload). You can check yourself that the only thing that's changed is the GUID line in the .xml file. This typo should be fixed in the source by Lenovo and reuploaded as perhaps a rev 2 for n1ful37w.zip . Hopefully this hasn't happened for any other firmware update files.

Hi! I recently bought an Inspiron 15 7000 (7559). I went to the "Drivers and Downloads" section of the Dell website for my model and downloaded and installed the latest  drivers and updates. The issue started when I got to the "Seagate ST500LM000/ST1000LM014 Firmware Update" download. I opened the bottom of the laptop and made sure that the update was for my HDD. My model was ST1000LM014 so I downloaded the update "Kahuna_ZPE.exe" and ran it.It started to run but then stopped at where it said "rEFInd - Initializing" and a bunch of lines saying "Binary is verified by the vendor certificate". I thought maybe it just took time to initialize so I left for a workshop I needed to do at work and asked my wife to see what would happen. 8 hours after when I got home, it was still on the same screen. Now, when I switch it off and on, it always goes back to the same screen.Has anyone encountered the same issue before and know how to resolve this? Thank you.

A:Stuck at "rEFInd-Initializing" after trying to update Seagate HDD firmware

I had the same issue on my Dell 7559 today. When it tried to install the update it seemed to go into a loop with similar info. The only way I got it to proceed was - at the point where it changes screens (on my PC, it changes) a list of options appear. After much trial & error, I found I could move from one selection to another, then make a selection by moving the up/down keyboard arrows and entering a choice. Some of the options led to the "Safe" screen, which I couldn't find a use for. The top listing was the only one that I hit on that went through a cycle, that didn't seem to end correctly, but at least it stopped the loop. I'm sur Dell support is needed to make any sense of this one.
If I learn any more, I'll update the info.  Mike

January 26, 2009 (Computerworld) Last week, Seagate Technology LLC tried to appease users who for the past two months have swarmed its online support forum to complain that desktop hard drives have been freezing up during data transfers or failing altogether.

Seagate late last week released the second of two fixes for the firmware bug that caused the problem, and it offered affected users free data recovery services from its i365 business unit.

The company first tried to fix the bug on Jan. 16, but new firmware it released that day had flaws of its own.

use the link above for the original article

A:Warning: Seagate HD Firmware issues

I've been following this for the past couple of weeks now, I think the point the article is trying to make is that the 1st firmware revision released on the 16th also bricked drives, but the 2nd firmware fix is OK... at least the drive I applied the 2nd firmware to is fine.

I've got 5 more to try.

Hi: You can only flash the BIOS using the supported Windows Based BIOS flash for the supported Windows Operating system. There are no DOS flash files you can install independent of the Windows installer. Bottom line:  If you want to flash the BIOS you must install Windows 7.

I tried everything according to instructions, but with no avail. Please help! My laptop is off now, so I will wait for solutions here before I turn it back on.

Seagate has issued an official statement today, acknowledging all recent problems with some Barracuda 7200.11 drives. Based on the information posted in the company's forums here, select Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5-inch hard drives made in Thailand, suffer from a firmware issue that bricks the HDDs after a short period of time. After three to five months of normal operation these defective hard drives will suddenly lock-up as a protective measure and prevent the system from recognizing the drive from then onwards. In most cases the information won't be lost, but the drive will be completely useless, changing the drive's electronics won't help much either. This problem occurs not only to the 1TB Barracuda models, but to Seagate 1.5TB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB Barracuda 7200.11 drives, along with some Maxtor and ES.2 models. That's pretty disturbing, but now Seagate will provide its customers with an updated firmware if their drive is problematic.

Here's the full statement from the company's spokesman Mike Hall:
Seagate has isolated a potential firmware issue in certain products, including some Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives and related drive families based on this product platform, manufactured through December 2008. In some circumstances, the data on the hard drives may become inaccessible to the user when the host system is powered on*.

I'm running a T440s with two type A02 Ultra Docks. My OS is Linux Mint (currently 18.3, shortly to be 19.3). I have one dock (manufactured 14/06) with out of date firmware that I'd like to update to see if it resolves a problem (flickering display when laptop reconnects -- I've been using a KVM switch with two laptops). The newer dock is a replacement which hasn't exhibited the problem. It may be a hardware fault but would like to try a firmware upgrade. How can I do this? (ie., without re-installing Windows just to run this) My laptop doesn't undock properly -- I get a blank screen on both laptop and monitor. I know of but haven't tried the dockd solution available from github; I'll wait until I've tried a newer Linux kernel first. It would be helpful to know from now on what minimum kernel release is required for docking station functionality to work.

A:install firmware in Linux

@efueyo Basically, you can't -- which is why many of us retain dual-boot systems -- because most, if not all, of the system utilities provided by manufacturers run ONLY in Windows. HP distributes their utilities as compressed archives -- and the only tool I know of personally that can extract the components is 7-ZIP -- another Windows utility. If you CAN extract the components, you can see what they are, but most likely, the only executable parts are going to be MS Windows only.

I'm running CentOS 7 on E7470, and a few of the devices aren't working, like smart card reader, fingerprint reader, etc. According to some sources, deploying the latest ControlVault firmware/drivers package may fix some of those.
The native installer is built for Windows, and I was wondering if it'd be possible to do the upgrade by either booting a Windows portable/live version and running the upgrade, or, copying the installer to a USB and doing an upgrade in the way it's done with BIOS upgrades on Linux?
Perhaps LVFS? (Although compiling that on CentOS 7 is not really straight forward)

Here's another (risky?) idea: There's a Windows 10 VM running on top of libvirt/KVM, and I can do USB passthru of Broadcom 5880. Driver isn't applied by default, so I'm tempted to try how wrong might things go if I were to install ControlVault2 firmware and drivers for these devices as they're passed thru to the VM.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm trying (unsuccesfully) to apply the latest firmware upgrade (1.18) to my T470p laptop, using the only OS I have: Ubuntu 18.04. I tried downloading the CD ISO (r0fuj18wd.iso), flashing it to a USB pen, but the laptop refuses to reboot from there.Further notes:-) from BIOS: I restored defaults, and I also secure boot; my current firmware is 1.17-) I tried both flashing the .iso directly to the USB flash (that shows up as /dev/sda), using dd or other USB flashing tools (even unetbootin from a Windows laptop), and also to create a FAT32 or FAT16 partition, then flash into /dev/sda1, setting also the bootable flag on the partition with fdiskThe result has consistently been the same: when I reboot, after selecting boot menu and temporary boot device, I choose the USB drive, but it doesn't boot anything from there. On a related note, when I insert the USB disk, I see an empty disk labelled "R0FET44U".Is there anyone who succesfully managed to install such a firmware upgrade from Linux and might have a useful hint ? Thanks!

There is a new firmware release (FWNV15) for the NVMe SSD of the X1 Carbon 5th. I'm wondering if there is a way to perform the upgrade on a machine with no Windows installed on the internal SSD?
I've installed Ubuntu on the NVMe SSD and have a external USB Drive with Windows 10.
I tried to run the Firmware Update Utility on the "external" Windows 10 but no luck so far. Windows reboots and after it's up again the utility just shows some generic error message.
Also, there doesn't seem to be a booteable ISO.
Any recommendations on how to upgrade the firmware with my setup?

A:Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

The upgrade utility sometimes fails before it reboots windows with a message like "can't initializie linux system". So I investigated further and found that the updater in fact is an ELF binary  $ file fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.8.13, not stripped Which also seems to be pretty easy to use: $ ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
PROGRESS --- start firmware update.
Usage ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff <Model> <Serial> <Firmware> [Option]
Model : Drive Model Name.(Mandatory)
Serial : Drive Serial Number.(Mandatory)
Firmware : Firmware Image file path.(Mandatory)
Option : Additional Option string starts with `-'.(Optional)
PROGRESS --- completed with status(8). And the necessary info which firmware to use is in a file called fwwinsd.pro: $ cat fwwinsd.pro
"THNSF5512GPUK TO","5KLA5102","5KLA5104","TINYCORE","fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff","5KLA5104_NVME.sig","L","TOSHIBA"

Hello, maybe someone can help me out with the problem I have upgrading the firmware of my T470s. The installed version is 1.11 (from June 2017, I think.). It runs archlinux and is no dual boot system i.e. there is no windows version on it anymore. I have learned that one of the usual ways to update is using the tool fwupdmgr. When I run the tool with "fwupdmgr update", the output is "No releases found for device: Not compatible with firmware version 0.1.11, requires >= 0.1.14" Maybe it is possible to install the current system firmware (which is 1.33) directly with "fwupdmgr install <xyz>.cab", but I don't dare to do so because I don't want to brick the hardware. So my question is: Can this be done savely and if not, is there any other way to upgrade the firmware without using windows? Thanks and kind regards

Howdy,I've got a t460p thinkpad, running win10.  It has the dock, and 2 monitors are usually attached to the dock.My lenovo system update wanted me to install the critical security [urgent] update to my intel management engine, the update is to version  I followed all the instructions, closing nearly everything and the update proceeded normally and quickly, until it froze. The system updater says "installing: Intel Management Engine 11.8 Firmware - 7 [32/64]/8.1/10 [64]"  and"Overall Progress:  91%"The cmd window that's showing the actual install says "FW Update:  [ 99% (-)] Do Not Interrupt"  but the little progress spinning thing has not spun in a long time. (40+ minutes)Every so often (every 5mins?), it the upper progress bar in the "system update" will backup a little bit...then it will move forward again a minute or so later. Umm...I need to use my computer.  It's been about 45 minutes that I've been looking at this screen with no change (other than the backup-forward cha-cha in the gui progress bar).(image to help) (the progress bar is in it's full position, this is what it looks like after the top progress bar moves forward again after backing up a wee bit, when it backs up, it just doubles that gray area at the end, it doesn't move back a whole lot).I am guessing I cannot restart at this point. Can I abort the install and try again?

Hi there,  I would really appreciate help in relation to this ongoing error. I am prompted by Vantage on regular basis to update the SSD firmware from 6L7Q to 7L7Q. Using Lenovo Storage firmware update tool 1.103. Fails every time, has been like this for months so I am not expecting an auto update fix.  Tries to do it, gets to reboot, and then the error below appears.  "software condition is not ready to update due to some condition" I have also downloaded from Lenovo website manually, and have run the zipped version, with same result. I have looked up Samsung SSD drivers directly and there is no options for this drive. Has anyone had similar issue? Please let me know if you have a fix.  Many thanks.

Hi, since a couple of weeks, system update prompts me to update my NVMe disk firmware. It downloads and runs Lenovo Storage Device Firmware Update Utility, but it always fails with the same error: Update Failed: Firmware update FAILED! RC=0x1 Stopped by a device reason.  This happens to me with the last version of the firmware update toot (FWNV29), but also has happened to me with previous versions. Also, downloading FWNV29 and running it independently from system update leads to the same error. Can someone help? Thanks. The log from fwwinsd.exe (fwwinsd.log) shows the following:[2019/03/27 07:47:09]: CFWWinDlg::OnInitDialog - IN

Lenovo Vantage updated the T480s BIOS on 8/9. I immediately started getting a Thunderbolt error when starting Windows 10 64, which says to update the Thunderbolt firmware. I downloaded the current firmware from Lenovo (n22th06w) but I get the following error when trying to update: 0x20D SDK_INVALID_OPERATION_IN_SAFE_MODE What's the solution, Lenovo? Thanks.

Hello, I have Carbon X1 5th (20HR) running Windows 10 pro (updated).  Altought I followed the instructions here - https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cy/en/downloads/ds120390 (This is the page for Lenovo users who wish to update TPM firmware) - and installed the "BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10" version 1.33, Windows still keeps telling me to update the TPM firmware driver.  In BIOS it shows that I have TPM ver 2.0, enabled. Since Windows kept telling me to update the TPM driver, thanks to Google I found out that there is a tool created by Lenovo called "TPM Firmware Update Utility -ThinkPad" (It is worth noting that this tool is not mentioned on the instruction page). I downloaded the tool, but can't understnad how to use it (assuming that I should use it at all, because this tool is not mentioned on the TPM instructions page). Could you please help me to solve the TPM issue described above? Is there a way to check what version do I have? Thanks in advance!
