Solved: Cable plug not Internet compatible?

Q: Solved: Cable plug not Internet compatible?

I'm trying to set up my modem/router on a different cable outlet, and on the original one, we're using a modem that does our phone as well, I'm trying to set up a normal modem in another outlet, but when I set it up, all I get is "Limited Connectivity," I've tried with ethernet and wireless. I use that outlet for cable TV, is that same outlet not compatible with Internet?

I really need some help with this, I don't know anything about networking..

So any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Like the title says, I encounter this weird problem when I plug in the Ethernet cable to my Ethernet card. The card seemed to work fine, but just to be sure I installed a different card and still get the same problem. I think it might have something to do with windows auto detecting the connection or something similar. I have never encountered this error before so I have no clue what to do! Oh, BTW I'm working on a different computer than the one I'm on right now posting this. I'm building the computer as a server for my house, but obviously it won't do any good if windows refuses to connect!! Any help would be appreciated!

Just out of curiosity, are you connected 24/7 as for dsl line, or are you dial-up, and do you plug in the ethernet cable while the system is live, or do you do it while the system is turned off.

Plug in the cable while the system is turned off, or reboot your computer with the cable connected. When the OS reboots, it should be able to detect that the cable is not disconnected from the ethernet hardware and boot successfully.

You should also check the ethernet card mfg website for an up-to-date driver for your ethernet card to make sure it has the latest driver.

Hope this helps,

Hi there, my mother went to work a few days ago and came home to find that her computer had restarted itself and is now displaying a "Plug an Ethernet cable into this computer"/"A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken" error message in Windows Network Diagnostics. She's running Windows 7 on a Gateway ZX4971 and we use a NETGEAR n450 for WiFi.

My Macbook and both of our phones can still connect to our WiFi perfectly fine, it's just her desktop having the issue.

I ran Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig /all and this is what came up:

I've restarted our NETGEAR n450, unplugged it completely from power and plugged it back in, and restarted her computer but nothing has worked. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and removed some bad files but that didn't solve anything either.

Advice?

*Edit:
I've done this and everything checks out fine:
Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.

Also, I've run DriverUpdate from Slimware Utilities, Inc. but the scan reports that "Your system has the latest stable drivers and updates installed."

A:No Internet Connection/"Plug in an Ethernet cable" message after random restart.

Easiest solution - try a different ethernet cable. Yes they do go bad.

Next attempt, move the cable from the slot it is in, in the router, to a different slot. Yes, those slots also can go bad.

Harder, it is possible the NIC (ethernet card has died). In that case, you'd see what empty slots the computer has, buy a card, install it and plug into that.

I just had a poster on another forum who bought a new card for $15 and his computer which wasn't connecting, is now working fine.

My internet connection has been working just fine on BOTH computers. Recently, JUST THE HP will not connect to the internet saying "plug a cable into the network adapter local area connection". I have tried various repairs to diagnose where the issue is occurring and think it might be something to do with an HP update that may have messed something up or a driver issue?!?! After taking the router out of the loop, trying a new ethernet cable, etc...I'm thinking either drivers, port or card?!?! I have Windows Vista and have searched various forums and tried several "solutions" to no avail. Any ideas?!?! -researched error in System Diagnostics Report (Microsoft 6to4 adapter is reporting "tv_configMgrErr31")

Can I plug in the power cable to a sata drive (already connected to sata port on mobo), while the computer is on.

With that drive connected Windows will not boot (I never have had a problem with the drive before, even when installing windows). If I remember right, a few years ago, I moved the pagefile to that drive, and it also had a boot.ini file on it (for some reason) I wonder if that is the problem (never until now), because when that drive is installed windows hangs at starting windows.

A:Plug in a sata power cable

If the SATA controller is set to AHCI mode, and the SATA port the drive is on is set to allow "hot-swap", then yes you could. If not, then no you can't.

You should post a screenshot of your Disk Management window with the problem drive connected. Expand the window so everything can be read.

Hi their first of all my computer spec:

I have a thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS case, Asus P5KC motherboard, windows 7 ultimate 64bit, Intel Quad core Q6600 CPU, 2GB corsair XMS DDR2 800mhz RAM, 1TB Samsung spinpoint hard-drive, DVD-drive

what it is, I bought my new case ( the thermaltake supranoVB1000SWS) a couple of weeks ago, so obviously I had to swap all my hardware into it from my older case.
Everything worked perfectly in my older case, its when I swapped everything to my new case that I started having problems with my DVD drive.
When I connect the IDE and power cable upto it, and switch my computer on their is no power getting to the drive, well no lights light up, flicker or do anything.
But once i turn my computer off and remove the IDE cable, but leave the power cable in, the DVD drive powers up, the draw opens and closes like normal, it only doesnt come on when the IDE cable is plugged in.

The DVD drive is set to master, this is IDE
My hard-drive is SATA so thats automatically goes to master.

The dvd drive is not detected in the BIOS ( revision 1203)

I have checked the IDE connector on the motherboard its-self and none of the pins or damaged or bent etc, I have even tried a new IDE cablr but the same happens.

Please can you help me thank you.

Had a similar problem moving an optical drive to the secondary IDE port on new computer a while ago. Had to change the jumper on the drive from Master to Cable Select (CS) to get it to work. It might be worth trying on your computer. You would need an IDE cable that supports CS with gray and black connectors for the drives.

Hello guys , i have a problem with my desktop pc and I really can't find a solution to it. Recently , I started to get dc and the only way of making it work again was to turn off my modem, wait 10 seconds and then restart the pc. Recently i was downloading a game from steam and after 3/25 gb it dc again. Troubleshooter reported 2 problems. The first with an red x stating that an ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or it might be broken (my cable is new and it works fine) and one with a yellow triangle stating that local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration. Ok so I gave up and did 2 things: first i checked my hardware. They said it works perfectly . Then I unplugged my modem thinking that this was the problem. I plugged the cable directly into my pc and had to use dial-up connection. Ok , i entered the user and pass , connected and after a few days of perfect connection i've decided to resume the download. After downloading another gb it crashed again . So out of frustration i took my pc to my friend and used his connection for the download . It worked perfectly . Now i am back home and guess what? After trying to download a large file it crashed again and now it won't even connect back. i. Have never seen something like this , it just collapses if it uses up more that 3-4 mb/s . Now the troubleshooter says the swme about the cable and the ip . My settings are to obtain an automatic ip ... My driver is fine , my cable is fine , wireless on laptop wor... Read more

I would first try power cycling both the modem and router. unplug both and wait about a minute; then plug the modem back in first; and let that boot; then plug the router back in and let it boot. Also, check for a firmware upgrade for your router. If there is one; download and install it. Once that is done.I would go into the device manager in the control panel and uninstall any either net related connections and or devices. Any onboard network cards; uninstall them and let reboot and let windows hopefully detect it and reinstall the proper drivers, etc for it. Try any or all of these things and see if they help ya out any.

Hi!

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet with my Acer Aspire laptop using an ASDL cable coming from a router.

The account username and password are set up. When I insert the ADSL ethernet cable in to my laptop, and click 'Connect' in the dial up box, it goes through the dialling, check password etc, and in 2 seconds, I am online, and it shows as connected in the bottom right of the screen, with the speed (100Mps).

Then, my laptop just freezes. The mouse won't move, and everything is frozen. not even the Ctrl Alt Del works. I've left it at least 20 minutes and nothing happens so I have to reset. On re-startup, it goes to a blue screen and prompts to run a file check of FAT 32(?).

Have tried this a few times, all with the same result. I usually connect via WIFI at home, but I am in Beijing for 2 weeks, using a friends internet cable. Works fine on his laptop (this one- ThinkPad X41) so not the internet thats causing the problem. Have connected to the interent via cable before in England with no such probs (although that was with a USB cable - not sure if that makes any difference?)

If anyone could help, I'd be so grateful - really need my laptop. I'm using Windows XP, and have the basic Norton Security service that comes on a free trial basis with most new laptops.

Thanks in hope...

Richie.

I would check your computer for a virus or spyware before looking at any other causes. Freezing up after connecting to the internet may be a sign there is a trojan virus or other ansty at work.

I have a laptop that i received from my father about 5 months or so, it's pretty old because it was the vista model and I usually play games like LoL, SC Brood war, Warcraft 3 and Osu. Today I was using my laptop and i went away to clean my pet's cage then when i came back, my screen was black unnaturally. I thought that it was just some random problem that wasn't really that harmful until I tried turning the computer back up again with surprising results. When I booted the laptop again it took me to the screen where you got to chose whether you can solve what the problem was that made the computer suddenly shut down or just boot regularly. I tried to ust boot it up regularly when suddenly it rebooted again. It repeated this process about 5 times when I had enought and got a bit frustrated and slapping my laptop. It then showed up bluescreens for the next 4 hours or so. I plugged everything out that was on the laptop, my Blue Snowball microphone, Royche Optical mouse, ethernet cable and my Sony Stereo Headphones MDR- XD200. Finally after a bit when the bluescreens and blackscreens didn't appear I quickly went otn the website to search this up and also went on my anti-virus programs to clear any malwares or viruses. I don't know what's wrong with my laptop, and I don't know if my laptop will act weird again if i plug in my accessories.

I have one very long cable so I was thinking I could run it to the wireless router where I need it, and have the non-wireless router by the computer that needs to be plugged in and run a cable from that to the computer as well as have the long cable plugged in and run that to the wireless router. Make sense? Would that work?

I have an almost fresh install of xp on my desktop and want to avoid cluttering the hard drive with stuff to slow it down. One of the things I have noticed is that media players seem to reproduce like rabbits...media player comes with windows...then some website will say that it can't live without having real player installed...and then another one...my favorite is VLC...and of course, itunes....

I noticed that there is a plug-in to make Firefox work with VLC I think there are also other plug-ins for other media players as well. What exactly do these things do? If I have the plug-in do I have to install the software? Do they improve the ease of use of the media player? the quality of the sound? do they reduce the cpu load?

A:[SOLVED] Plug it in, plug it in...and media players

Media plugins allow the browser to play audio and video files in different formats on websites.

They are not all in use at the same time (just called on when needed by a website's embedded media player), so they don't slow down your computer or fill up your hard drive.

The machine powers on and I get a display, but the optimal viewing resolution (the monitor has a little popup message that says 1440x900) is not available as an option when I go into display settings.
When I look in device manager, the monitor is listed as a generic plug/play device. Do I need to manually install a driver from teh manufacturer? Previously, when just plugging the monitor directly to the machine with no cable the display looked fine, but now it doesn't look as good.

thanks,

You'd be better of with a long high quality cable then using an extension.

Yes, install the drivers from the manufactures website. These will help your GPU set the correct resolution.

A:Solved: WAN with no normal cable internet?

When connected to the Internet with the wireless link, please do this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Today I hooked up a Linksys E1500 Wireless N-router. I can get on the internet using ethernet cable but not using wireless. The Network and Sharing center says I am connected to Multiple Networks but there is a red X between there and the Internet. I have tried using network properties to configure the address - to no avail. I went into the Services and changed the WLAN AutoConfig to Automatic - to no avail. I have reset the router and modem, restarted the computer, etc - to no avail. I've tried more but right now I can't remember everything.
Here is the info. I have so far:

The following was put together mostly by etaf with a little help from me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007
Over the last four or so years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

--- 3) On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved the issue

--- 4) The majority of members, have now used the drivers from the atheros driver site, which has resolved the issue.

Hello!

My boyfriend is a graphic artist, he works from home and sends all his work online - so he NEEDS the internet. He has Comcast cable, and the other day he was using it and it suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. He called the Comcast people to see if they knew what was up, he said to try to repair his IP address, but it just says "cannot repair IP address". So then the guy told him to try exchanging his modem for a new one and see if that does anything. He tried that today - and still nothing! He tried using the USB wire and ethernet wire - neither worked.

Any ideas of what we should do??

My modem is a 2.0 (not sure what that means) but will be a 3.0 next Wednesday.

Cable One is the provider. I have confirmed by both word of mouth and from their website that we are supposed to be getting 50 Mbps.

The following is a speed comparison in speeds. Blue is wireless, red is wired.
Now, my problem is we are only getting 5 Mbps but are paying for 50 Mbps. I checked just to be sure, their website does say 50 Mbps not 50 MBps and made sure the speed test was set to the same number. I checked and found out that the 3.0 is suppose to allow more than the 2.0, however I can find nothing stating that the 2.0 will only limit me to 5 Mbps. Most things I found say that it should be good up to 15 Mbps, some even said up to 25 is possible. So first thing is... Is my modem the cause of my speed being limited so drastically? Or should I be searching for other issues? If I should be searching for other issues, how should I look for them and what am I looking for?

I know calling their tech support is an option. It isn'... Read more

Everything was going good until i was on aol one day searching through some sites on a search engine and when i went to one my comp started acting weird. I got tons of pop ups non stop like 100 or more but i brought up the task manager and it finally stoped. But then i closed the task manager and the pop ups started reoccuring so i brought the TM back up and tried to close out of aol but my comp started running slow and eventually froze. So i pulled the plug out waited 5 min, pluged it back in and turned my comp back on. Then all the lights on my cable broadband box came on but then they all went out except the internet light which blinks. But the rest stayed out. From then on i couldnt get on aol using my cable connection with my broadband box. So i tried a dial up connection to see if it worked and it does but broadband wont.

The "internet" light on my box is flashing and the "message", "cable activity" , "cable link", and "pc link" lights are all out.

I've already called and talked with my cable service and they said it should be working, they cant see any reason why its not, and i asked if i had a firewall block on could that be the problem, and they said yes.

All the problems i've experience so far is a slow comp, my downloads cut off and dont fully download (on dial up), and i cant connect to aol using broadband.

I think i might have a win32 virus, someone hi-jacked my connection, or i have a blocked firewa... Read more

I would greatly appreciate any help. I have kind of pieced together my network first with the roadrunner cable modem with only one ethernet port going to my dsl/cable router then two patch cables going to from the router to each pc (2 computers). I did ipconfig/all on the one that has internet access and used the ip, subnet, default gateway, dns to configure my other computer changing the last digit in the ip address.

I had file and print sharing but somewhere in my efforts, I lost that and have yet to have internet access on my second machine. I hope I have provided enough info and thanks in advance for any help.

I have a home network and my only PC now is a Toshiba Netbbook with XP - I also have an Ipad and an HP wireless printer connected to the network.
The Wireless Network signal strength is excellent and the Ipad and Printer connect to the Internet but the Netbook will only connect to the Internet if I run a cable from the PC to my wireless router.

A:Solved: Can only get Internet via Ethernet cable

Check the wireless is switched ON
theres often a physical switch or a combination of the FN and one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
often F2 is used - but note , not always - look for a symbol that looks a little like (( i ))

is the wireless on?

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

can we see an ipconfig /all and an xirrus screen shot

ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hi I recently encountered an issue where my computer is saying the internet cable is unplugged when its plugged in to my router. This first occured after a wicked lightning storm we had, and the computer had been working the night before. Now I called my internet provider and they told me to try a different cable in which I did, and still no connectivity. Then I asked them whether it could be that the lightning storm fried the network card in the computer, and the man said that if anything the storm would of fried the power supply not the network card. All my cable box/router/computer are on surge protectors. I have also tried to direct connect through my cable box -----> to PC and still no luck, I disabled and enabled all the connections. Now the weird part is my brother's wireless still works and my sisters wired connection still works. Please help me resolve this issue because I was told to bring it to a technician to check on the network card, and the nearest one is hours away thanks in advance.

I have a Motorola SB6121 DOCSIS 3 modem from Charter feeding my own D-Link DIR-655 router. Periodically the Internet is unavailable to my PC that is hard wired to the router. When that happens, it’s only gone for a minute maybe two minutes. Sometimes it will go for days with no problems. Other times it may happen two or three times an hour. I can read the modem status page from my PC when this happens and observe that the four downstream channels are bonded and receiving approximately 0 dBmV (S/N = 37 dB). Upstream is bonded and delivering 47 dBmV. So, I think we can say that the PC is communicating with the modem through the router and the modem is connected to Charter’s head end.
Charter has been out numerous times and says the signal into and out of the modem meets specs. Of course they are never there when the Internet is unavailable. But if they were there they would probably find that the signal carrier meets specs, but there is no Internet. However, Charter repair has told me that this is impossible. If the modem is bonded, it means the Internet is there. Therefore, it is the router that is dropping the Internet (remember I can read the modem status page trough the router when this happens).

Any thoughts?
