I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

The problem is each time I turn the computer on, I get the message new hardware found and it reloads the printer. Even though I have that driver loaded already. It loads as many times as I turn on the computer and calls it Copy 1, 2, 3, etc. I have tried 4 different printers and the same thing keeps happening.
I also get found new hardware each time I use the same flash drive
Also, If I turn the printer on or off while the computer is on, it reboots the computer.

cheers to anyone who can solve this problem for me.

I recently reformatted a Dell computer running Windows XP, and upon reinstallation of everything I failed to unplug the dp d145 printer from the USB port. It now will not work. There are no error messages or anything, it just doesn't work at all. I have no idea what's wrong with it. The copier works, so it's not a printer issue, it just doesn't work with the computer. Any suggestions?

A:HP Printer not seen (after reinstalling XP)

uninstall the software from add-remove programs.

Unplug the printer.

Remove it from the Printers folder if it remains.

Then reinstall exactly as per the instructions.

I just got a new computer with XP pro. I downloaded the drivers for my Lexmark Z51 printer. XP says driver not signed, but I got the printer to work. Now XP keeps re-installing the printer every time I reboot, or turn the printer on.

I have emails in to Lexmark, but they are not known for their support. I just want the darned thing to work.

Anyone have any ideas?

A:XP keeps reinstalling my printer?

Wellcome to TSG.

Shut the printer off and disconnect it. Uninstall the drivers. Reconnect the printer and turn it on and let windows load the drivers. XP has the Z51 driver in its database.

Hi-

I took my computer in for service to erradicate a nasty trojan that snuck past my virus protection software. They had to completely wipe my hard drive clean and then reinstalled windows xp os.

I brought the computer home and have been reloading programs and trying to reconnect printers, etc.

Anyway, I have a crazy problem. My printer ports keep disappearing! My main printer has been installed and it works fine right after the computer is booted up. then the next time I try to print it doesn't. When looking at the properties of the printer in the control panel--it is easy to see why the printer can't print---there are NO ports listed. It is really connected to LPT1 and if I restart computer then it will be fine with the first thing that prints (usually whatever didn't print from prior to the shut down). All of the different ports show up as they should be. Then they disappear again!!!

The tech already tried a remote access repair to my computer. But it didn't work---he didn't know what the problem was and all he did was reinstall the printer (which I have done many times) and chose a different driver. Doesn't matter--it is fine when computer first comes on then....gone. even if I just put it into standby--when I wake it up---no printer. :-(

Also, my secondary printer which is a USB connection has the exact same problem so it is not the printer.

Any suggestions?? Has anyone ever heard of this problem before/

thanks in advance for any assistance

Hi Chris,
if it works on 75 percent of the clients I would do the following thing. Your clients are probably in a domain environment. I would copy the security descriptor (SID) from a properly working client with subinacl.exe (A command line tool which you can download
from MS download) and push it to a not working client and test if it solves the problem.
I thing this is the easiest method.
Subinacl is a the most powerfull tool ever !

I don't know where the required Java software is supposed to be located nor where I can obtain it.

I have Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, Dell 946 printer.

Everything went to hell when I installed Zone Alarm firewall -- because I can't sign onto the internet without closing Windows firewall every time! -- after seeing someone here recommend it and before seeing additional posts regarding how much trouble it causes. And it did. I did a system restore to get back and running, but multiple things are still haywire.

The printer is the most pressing. I thought I would try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling, so I followed Dell's directions here:

Clicked OK to unzip files
"All files were successfully unzipped"

Then they say, "Follow the prompts that appear to install the driver. If prompted to restart your system, click OK."

But I don't have any prompts! Instead I'm looking at a screen that says "Computer, OS C: drivers, R145315" across the top. I'm in the install folder, right? But what do I do next? I've got folders that say "apps", "common", "drivers", "install", "pubs", "tools" all "date modified" today. If I click on the install folder, then I see folders that say "config", "English", "x86". Friend's XP laptop I upgraded to Win7 here in Germany has a Lexmark X7170 printer which installed fine using its software package (he wants to scan). But the problem is he only wants to plug it in when he uses it, and every time he plugs it in now it tries to reinstall the drivers, making a new copy of the printer in Devices and Printers instead of recognizing the one already installed and set to default.

I have tried turning off Auto Device Installation but that only affects going to Windows Update, so it still scans the PC for drivers to install for a new Copy of the printer every time its plugged in, and for some reason doesn't find the needed drivers in their folder.

Is there a way to resolve this. It is using a Vista software package for this older printer, but it prints and scans fine if we can resolve this issue not present when he had XP.

I'm pretty sure its buggy software. The only version of the 7100 software I could get to work is the English version. Now when I try to delete the only listing in Devices and Printers it gives an Access Denied. I'm going to try reinstalling in recommended Compat Mode.

A:Lexmark 7100 printer keeps reinstalling when plugged in

Check if there are any Lexmark Services that aren't running before the printer is plugged in.
If there are, start the Service(s) before plugging in the printer and see if that helps.

You may need to reinstall the printer. Remove the printer driver from Control Panel\Programs and Features, then add the printer from Devices and Printers.

Please note that if the printer driver is not in the list in Devices and Printers, I suspect that the printer is currently not compatible with Windows 8. In this case I suggest you contact the printer manfuacturer for more information.

I need to reformat and reinstall Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 8200, which is about 5 year old. It is my understanding that first you reinstall XP and then you have to reinstall the drivers. I am not sure how to reinstall the drivers.

When I ordered my computer from Dell, it came with things like a monitor, printer, speakers, video card, and sound card.

The computer also came with a cd that is labeled "Drivers and Utilities". The cd is also labeled "Dell Dimension ResourceCD for Reinstalling Device Drivers and Using Diagnostics, Utilities, and Online Documentation".

Will this cd install all of the necessary drivers for all of the hardware that came with my computer? For instance, my video card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. Will the cd have the drivers for this, or will it only have some sort of generic video drivers?

If the cd does have all the necessary drivers, how do I use it to actually install them? Do I just click some button and the cd will automatically install all the necessary drivers?

Last, is there some program I can use that will make copies of my already existing device drivers so that I can use them as a last resort.

Hi,

My computer is working fine - but I recently purchased a new Samsung ML2570 laser printer that just died when the starter cartridge ran out of toner (or actually when the printer counter hit its predetermined set no. - probably 1000). At least I think that's what happened. The starter cartridges come without fuses. Replacement cartridges or toner refill kits come with fuses that are supposed to reset the counters, so when I refilled the starter cartridge and inserted the fuse that came with the kit, the printer still didn't work. I tried again with two more fuses, with no luck. I don't have a printer jam and all the doors are well-latched before I turn it on. Does anyone have any idea what I should do next to get my printer working again? My email is [email protected]

Regards, and thanks for any help,

Marie

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

I have trouble installing a HP Color LaserJet 8550N printer (has JetDirect Printer Server 600N with IP address of 192.168.68.4) to my XPpro PC.
I was stuck when Add Printer Wizard ask me to “specific a Printer”. I selected “Browse for a printer” and came up with nothing (no printer). I tried selecting “Connect to this printer” but I do not know what name to type in (Example is \\server\\printer). I tried selecting “Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network” but I do not what URL to type in (Example is http://server/printer/myprinter/printer). Therefore, I cancelled the installation.
I had then installed its Printer Utility. The utility is capable of finding the printer and showing me it’s Properties. However, I still ended up with no printer listed to use in Printers and Faxes.
So, XPpro is a step backward in this case.
I could install this printer with printer server on W98/ME because their Add Printer Wizards allow me to use either the IP address or the hardware address to locate the printer server.
I hope I have described my problem well. Please help!

I'm having difficulty getting the printer which is attached to a Win XP Pro system to be available for use by a Win ME system on the same network.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 697C. It is installed and working on the Win XP Pro system.
Both systems can see each other on the network and transfer files back and forth with no difficulty.
The printer on the XP system is marked for Sharing and File and Print Sharing is enabled.
The XP Firewall is turned off, as we use Zone Alarm Security Suite.

When I use Add Printer on the WinME machine, and try to browse for a network printer, I can expand the network to see the computer name of the XP machine, but the shared printer doesn't show up as a choice.

What are we doing wrong?

I then used the add printer wizard in Vista to install network printers all of which worked fine when I printed test pages. The domain installed XP drivers for the printers.4. I then took my system home, resumed from hibernation, and used the add printer wizard to install a Canon ip 5200R inkjet printer using Vista's in-box printer driver and create a standard TCP-IP port for the printer. I have a network with a PC (XP) with two local printers that I could print to from my Vista Business laptop either wirelessly or on the wire.

I too experienced this problem after installing SP1 (which was a nightmare unto itself) on the laptop.
This "fix" worked for me.

Go into Control Panel
Underneath the Hardware and Sound category, click on Printer
Click on Add a printer from the top menu
Click on Add a Local Printer
Choose Create a New Port with type of port remaining Local Port, then click Next
In the Port Name box type the path to the printer you wish to connect to and Click OkEx. \\mycomputer\myprinterIf the computer you wish to connect to is named Bob and the printer is called HP then the path would be \\Bob\HP
In the Install Printer Driver
screen, select your printer from the list or choose Have Disk and find the location of the printer drivers on the computer then click Next and then click Finish.
You should now see the printer installed in the Printers window.
Right-click on the printer and click Properties
On the General tab, click Print Test Page to test the printer.
You should now (hopefully) be able to printer from Windows Vista to this networked printer without any problems.

However when printing off a webpage I am only given two options, "MS Office Document Image Writer" and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer".
How can I make any of the other printers availible/show up when I'm trying to print a webpage? The tech guy is covering about 4 other jobs and told me I'm free to fiddle/add/edit system stuff on my machine. I tend to be pretty good about most things but am not experienced with networking.

I also have new Vista Computer, I've got the Vista connected to the Share Printe from XP, but, once, I shutdown and restart my Vista computer I loose the printer share connection to my Windows XP/Hp color laserjet printer. I try to access the printer from my Vista it said access denied.. I have to delete the printe and locally again reconnect the printer.

I thank you in advanced for your help with this dilema.

Regards

My new windows 7 computer is a dell package from staples. It's an Inspiron 660, 3 ghz, 4 megs ram, 64 bit, intel pentium processor. It's running Windows 7 Home edition. It's on a 'workgroup' network with two xp machines, one of which shares data files that reside on the win7 machine.

My usb receipt printer is an Epson tm-u220D. This printer is not plug and play, so the driver had to be downloaded and force fed. No problem there really; after a few tries we got the printer to print a test page and the accounting software (Bottom Line Accounting) seems to recognize it fine.

This setup is used as the cash register in a retail store, and prints receipts for customers on paper rolls.

Here is the minor glitchy problem - when we print a receipt it prints fine, but then we can see the red error light on the printer start flashing, and the next receipt won't print until we switch the printer off and back on. Also we see a local downlevel document in the queue that goes away in about a half minute whether we turn the printer off or not, and it instantly disappears if we do turn it off.

It's gonna be a pain to switch the printer off and back on between every two customers.

Surely there is an easy fix for this problem - any printer experts out there? Thanks in advance!

Hi Guys,

I'm getting quite frustrated with this issue and wondering if anyone has seen it, and able to resolve the issue. The issue is I have a network printer selected as the default in Windows 10. I have the option "Let Windows manage my default printer" turned off. At one point randomly, the default printer goes back to the Adobe PDF as the default.

Steps taken:

* I have checked the registry settings to ensure that the options "let Windows manage my default printer" is switched off. I can confirm this.
* Switched the default printer back to the network printer and performed a reboot. The network printer remains as the default. At some point of the day it goes back to Adobe PDF.
* Had a Microsoft support dude to look at the issue, but he has no idea either.

A few of my pilot users has also experience the same issue. Any ideas anyone?

How mine is set up is
In settings
Go to Printer icon
Make sure your named printer is in default.
Turn on let Window manage your default printer.

Printer - Turn On or Off Let Windows 10 Manage Default Printer

That way if your printer you named was the last one used
The next time you go to print
Your printer should appear

I am running windows xp pro, I had installed sp2 and found usb problems. In trying to fix the problem I accidentally deleted the port the printer was using, the "virtual usb port". I have recently removed the sp2 from my computer which helped in other areas but my printer is not being recognized by anything since deleting that port. Does anyone know how I can get that port back. All other usb devices work fine, scanner mouse keyboard ect..With power on to the printer it shows "printer not responding" or "printer offline". The printer is a cannon s9000. If it helps I am running a Abit kt-7a raid mobo, 1.4ghz amd athlon, win xp pro build 2600. I thought of installing xp on top of the current install but wasn't sure if i'd make things worse..Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am happy to supply whatever tech info to resolve this issue which has defeated me for 6 months. I cannot connect my HP G60 laptop Vista to HP printer or Kodak. Having looked at old threads I am not the only person to run up against this very hard problem. I would prefer not to bin my Laptop and buy an apple mac for compatability issues with 3rd party software. My solution at present is using a stick and transferring to XP sony lap top which is a nightmare as both have different versions of microsoft office. I am new to this forum and apologise in advance if my thread post does not meet the standards required of this collective. many best wishes to all.

I just upgraded my XP home edition to Vista home premium with an upgrade disk provided by Dell. Before the upgrade I uninstalled my HP 2575 printer and software because it was listed as a compatibility issue. After upgrade I reinstalled new software from HP for my printer from the HP website. I have a new Lenovo Windows 7 PC. I have a Brother MFC-9440CN printer directly attached to it via USB. Per instructions, I did NOT install any Brother software on the new PC. I just connected it via USB and the PC automatically installed the drivers, etc. Printing from that PC to the locally attached printer works like a champ. I have set up this printer via a network share (called BrotherMFC) so I can use this printer from other PCs.

I have a Dell desktop Windows XP PC (that used to be the computer that had this printer locally attached) and a Dell laptop with Windows Vista that I want to access this printer via the network. On each of these PCs, I have gone through the "Add a Printer" wizard and I selected network (vs. local) printer and find the printer share. However when I select the printer share and click OK, it appears to try and install software or something and says the printer driver on the printer server is incorrect. How can this driver be "incorrect" when it is the driver the new PC used to install? Is there a "special" driver the system needs to act as a printer server properly? Or is there any known compatibility issues of printing via a network share form Windows XP and Vista PCs to Windows 7?

I know the most optimum solution is to get a wireless print server, but this solution of using a network/printer share over the network has worked great and saves me having to spend $80/$100 on a wireless print server.

I use Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. My problem is: Whenever I try to print something (word, pdf, or any other file); printer spooler stops working and when I check the “Devices and Printers” all the printer drivers seem to be disappeared.

I checked the “Print Spooler” in the “Services” tool; and set the "Recovery after subsequent failures" option to “Restart the Service”. Therefore all the printer drives coma back after 1 minute. However the spooler stops immediately again when the uncompleted printing job starts; hence I can not print anything more than a page.

Earlier in this forum, someone posted that Microsoft issued a hotfix for this problem ( hotfix 2388142) which can be downloaded from article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2388142.

I downloaded this hotfix and tried to install, however it gives an error message of: “The update is not applicable to your computer” and quits installation.

I did uninstall and reinstall all the printer drives, but this did not help either.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,

A:Printer spooler keeps stopping and printer drivers keep disappearing

Yeah, I had the same issue. Even when I went into services and restarted it, it would shut back down and the printers would disappear. I tried working with the registry like a few suggested, but didn't help. The only fix that worked for me was to go back about a week on the restore point, and then all the printers reappeared and worked...

Hello,
Im sorry if this question has already been posted, i tried searching and couldn't find the answer in this forum.
I have a question, maybe someone can direct me to a tutorial somewhere, or to another topic that contains instructions on how to do this....

well, I just got a new router, and 2 desktops are connected to it, and i have 3 wireless laptops.
They are all connected to the internet via the router.
I have also connected my hp office jet 7310 printer to my router since it has an ethernet port.
how do i make it, so every computer on my network can print from this one printer?
the other thing is since its connected to the router directly, i dont want to have the printer connected to any computer via usb, so can someone please direct me to a tutorial in which all my computers can print from this one printer which is connected to the router via a direct Ethernet cable?

thank you so much!

When I tried to install a new Canon Pixma ip6220D printer on my Sony Vaio Windows XP Media Edition w/ SP2 desktop I receive an error that the computer cannot detect the printer after I hook-up the USB cable to the computer from the printer. This is after a balloon dialog appears in the system tray noting that new hardware was found - the hardware being a Canon ip6220D. The Canon software notes that it could not detect the printer and that there was a printer driver failure. Eventually a Windows error box appears noting that an error occurred installing the new hardware.

I have the same problem with a printer that previously had no problems. That printer is a HP Photosmart 3210xi.

I ran malware check using Threat Fire 3 which didn't find anything.

I have tried different USB ports with no success. I have tried USB ports that other devices use with no success.

Any suggestions on how to attack this problem would be appreciated.

Hi guys,

Kind of annoying problem here... I have an HP LaserJet 1200 hooked up via USB to a Mac that is running 10.5 (Leopard). For the printer's first 5 years or so everything was great. I could get new computers set up to print to the printer with no troubles, until recently.

Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and wanted to get the printer working again. I attempted to install the printer using the HP LaserJet 1200 PCL 6 printer drivers. It connected to the printer alright, but every time I printed it came out with a PCL XL Error: "Error: UnsupportedProtocol" instead of my document.

Now, every time I try to connect a new computer (Windows 7 or Windows XP, doesn't matter) the printer automatically installs the PCL 6 driver for the printer... which always prints out an error instead of the document I want. I can't find a way to manually choose the driver when I'm adding it because it's a network printer, not one that's locally hooked up.

I tried installing the PCL 5 driver manually, but the printer still ONLY wants the PCL 6 driver that gives me the errors. I tried to go to "Server Properties" while in Printers and Faxes to roll back the PCL 6 driver, but Windows can't find a driver to roll it back to.

Now, if I physically hook the printer up to the computer via a USB cable, it installs the PCL5 Driver and it works... but that's only when it's plugged directly in.

I'm extremely frustrated a... Read more

I'm using Adobe Reader 10.1.4 and can't get it to see the laser printer on the network. Previous versions worked OK and Word sees it without a problem. When I try to print a document the print screen shows firstly the default printer which is an inkjet connected via USB and when I click the drop-down all the printers are there except the laser on the network which I want to use.

The printer has been deleted and re-installed several times, is shown on the printer list in the Control panel and being “ready” and works fine with other packages such as Word. I have also deleted and downloaded Acrobat several times restarting the PC in between but still it can’t find that particular printer.

As other PCs see the printer and this one used to, does anyonehave any ideas as to how I can link the two?

To try and help further it is the only printer on the wireless network and if I transfer the pdf document to another PC, it works fine.
