I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I installed the SATA drive. Formatted it. Assigned it a letter. It won't show up in My Computer, but I can access it by typing in the drive letter in Windows Explorer and when I do this it comes up under My Computer in the "Folders" side pane

Data writes and reads from the drive fine.

I've tried formatting it and deleting the partition and creating a new one.

Two of my USB external Hard drives, a Fantom 600 GB and a Western Digital My Book 500GB cannot be seen in My Computer. I can see them in Device Manager and that says that they are working properly and the drivers are up to Date. In Disk Manager the 2 external drives had a black bar unlike the other drives which had blue bars. The 2 external disks had a number assigned to them but no letter.

I have tried diskpart in the command prompt, was able to assign a letter, then had to format the drives and they did show up in My computer as valid empty external hard drives with the correct amount of space on them. But when I tried to recover the backed up data for one of the disks (less than a third of the capacity of either drive) they went back to not being recognized by My Computer ans in disk manager had a black line with no letter again.

I just went through that process again, got both drives back and tried to recover the backed up files to my Fantom drive and lost the Fantom drive once again.

I am attaching screen shots of my current My Computer (Computer in 7) Device Manager and Disk Manager. In Device Manager you can see the Fantom. The My Book is the WD 5000AAV. In Disk Manager the My Book shows healthy with Disk 1 and the letter L. The Fantom is Disk 2 with no letter and a black bar. In My computer, the My Book is there but not the Fantom.

Any ideas for this. I am about to just recover my computer to factory setup and start new. I have sa... Read more

A:External drives show in Device Manager & Disk Manager but not Computer

Hi Dick1030,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Please do as follows:

1. It is unusual for the System Reserved Partition to have a drive letter. Please remove the drive letter.

2. Please remove (always Safely Remove) all the external drives including any card reader and do a drive cleanup as indicated here. http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/298744-usb-thumb-drives-not-recognised-not-drive-letter.html#post2477076 It will clean your system of all non-present devices and you will be starting with a clean slate.(Incidentally this can resolve many drive letter assignment confusion of Windows OS, as you can see in the referenced thread.)

3. After you reboot on completion of the drive cleanup, plugin only your WD My Book and the Fantom drive. As you plug-in the driver for each device will be installed ab-initio. You can watch it.

4. Now take a screenshot of the Disk Management and post. While taking the screenshot, click on "Show/Hide Console Tree” and “Show/Hide Action Pane” buttons on the toolbar on top to hide those and also pull up the center partition line up as much as possible so that we get a clear and full view.

5. Also tell us whether you are sure that you had formatted the Fantom drive and it contains data and whether you want to recover the data..

(Your statements and the screenshots are so confusing - atleast to me - it is necessary that you do the above and restate the problem.)

Hi guys,

Last week, I tried to install GoToMyPC (a trial version) and the computer started running really slow, so I deleted all the files associated with it (from Program Files) after uninstalling. I didn't delete anything else (or so I think) but my Limewire kept restarting itself, and I had to uninstall it too and delete all the files associated in Program Files bc I would keep getting an error that Limewire cannot start. Now, the sound was gone too, several of the windows updates were deleted, and now the task manager won't show up. I got the sound back, and did all the windows updates. I have also ran Ad-Aware 2007 and have tried everything that I could to get the task manager back. Here is my HiJackThis log.

I have a Jetway PA78VM5-H-LF motherboard.

Newegg.com - JetWay JPA78VM5-H-LF AM2+/AM2 AMD 780V HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

It's discontinued.

Downloaded the lan drivers for the onboard lan at Jetway.

Jetway - Tech.On The Move - Motherboard - PA78VM5/PA78VM5D

Went to install and I got this error.

The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable

I went to device manager and the device isn't showing up at all.

I don't have the device under network devices. Even when showing hidden devices.

Onboard Lan is enabled in bios.

Really clueless why it wont show up in device manager.

The weird thing is when I shut my computer down and restart it the ethernet on the back of the mobo turns red.

I have to unplug the tower and power cycle it to get it to restart.

And whenever I get into Windows 7 (64) the clock is always reset.

Any idea? I've pretty much done everything, I have never used it since I have a wireless USB device but I need to use the Ethernet for the time being.

I will try to install chipset drivers.

Maybe I need to update the bios? Anyone know a good how to flash guide?

A newbie here that just completed a first-time new Win7 PC build. Successful installation of Win7 Pro on WD 600GB 10000 system drive. Went back and installed 4 additional HDD. (2) WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM and (2) WD Caviar 7200 500GB HDD from XP system that were used for storage.

BIOS sees all HDDs, but are not viewable in Disk Management.

System Specs:
Antec Nine Hundred
Intel Core i7-980 3.33ghz
24GB (3 x 4gb) Corsair XMS3 1600mhz RAM
PNY Quadro 4000 2GB VC
Corsair 850TX 850W PSU
1 WD 600GB SATA HDD for OS
2X WD 500gb SATA HDs (previously used on WinXP system for storage)
1 Pioneer Blue Ray Burner SATA BDR

SATA4=WD 500GB (previously used as storage on XP system)
SATA5= Pioneer BDR
SATA6= WD 500GB (previously used as storage on XP system)

SATA configuration is enhanced. BIOS is 0701. Marvel 9128 Controller [IDE Mode] PCI/PnP is set to [NO] which was the default setting. The grey SATA1-6G headers are not in use.

Device Manager lists all drives.
However, only three are visible in Disk Management. Missing (1) WD 500GB (previously used on WinXP system) and (1) new WD 1T.

What am I missing here?

Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

When I open up disk manager I see two entries each for c:,d:,e:,f: and g: partitions.
I have an efi system with a GPT disk. Win7, Ubuntu and CentOS6 all installed in various partitions. There are a number of other partitions but only those with drive letters are duplicated. But only one instance has the filesystem type.

I have a second disk and a DVD and both these are okay/normal/displayed once.

The disk 0 schematic looks normal. Clicking on the partitions grey-highlights the entry with the filesystem types.

If I right-click on the either of the duplicated Volumes I just get a "help" otion where as my 2nd disk as the full range of actions.

I think I may know what has caused this but having read the internet twice I've not been able to find any clue on how to go about fixing it.

My idea was to copy/clone the C: soon after installation and have one "save" copy and another "game" copy. Dual boot to "w7_game" for clean OS without bloat.

I fiddled with bcdedit (easyBCD does NOT work with GPT and it tool a lot of hacking to fix the mess it left) and created a dual boot set-up but when I boot from w7_game (G it recognised it was using that box (windows flag against the drive when exploring the "Computer") but it was picked up the user account from c:
Not tried anything else on this topic but since then I spotted the dupicates.

Searched registry for whole word "e:" and only found one entry.

Further investigation shows that the hard drive is not listed in disk manager only the CD DVD ROM drive.

The Dell boots ok and other programs run fine and the hard drive appears as C Drive in My Computer and properties show everything is OK.

Title sums it up...

Its a cyber acoustics headset which comes with a USB port, an earphone, and a microphone.
First suggestion I KNOW you will make is tweak the audio settings, I have done this endlessly. Nothing is muted, especially not the built in mute button on the headset.

Furthermore, the Sound Bar that goes up when it gets input? Does not go up when I speak, and with feedback on I don't hear anything.

Strangely enough, there is a little attachment going across the wire and when I tap it I get the feedback of the tap and the sound bar goes up.

I have tweaked A LOT with the settings, set it to default, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.
I have gone the whole 9 miles.
Also, it does not show up in the Realtek Hd Audio Manager. Because USB ports are not counted as Audio Jacks. Any suggestions
PS: It used to work on this computer, I do not know what has changed.

Good day guys,
well, I was just installing Linux Fedora on my computer (I wanted a Dual-Boot with Win7) but I noticed that I don't have second partition. So I deleted some useless files (trash, games, etc.) back on Win7, and Voala, I just gained around 60GB of free space. I decided to creat new partition on disk manager. And here is the problem. It shows free space, as good as Explorer, but when it comes to that graph below, it doesn't show me free space. I shrinked it, but only gained 6GB of free space, where I can create new partition. I know it sounds complicated, but here is the picture.

I guess I'm doing somethin' wrong, what is it?
My Windows is in Czech language, but I made notes in the picture in English

A:Windows Disk Manager doesn't show free space

Try starting over. Put the Windows partition back the way it was. Make sure everything works normally. Reboot a couple times etc.. and run some apps to make sure nothing is acting weird. Then defrag the Windows partition to move the files toward the front of the partition. That should allow you to shrink to a greater amount of free space.

Always a good idea to make backup images along the way before risking your system.

edit: by "put it back the way it was" I mean delete the 6 GB partition you made, then expand the Windows partition to the end of the free space. Then use the system for awhile as suggested to make sure nothing got broken, before defragging.

edit2: also make sure you leave enough room for page file expansion etc..

This post is old but the problem of my SD-Card reader in my W520 not being detected happened to me a few days ago, Feb, 2018. My SD Card reader had been working a couple of months earlier.
First I did a Diagnostic test by checking if Linux could make it work.:
I have configured my W520 to dual boot Windows 7 / Linux Mint, so I booted it to Linux and found that Linux detected the card reader immediately and could read SD cards. That test told me the reader was okay and the problem was with Windows.
Based on a hint from this other post, I opened Device Manager from Control Panel and opened the devices under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (not Disk Drives as suggested in Method 1-4 of the other post). I found two devices. I right clicked on the Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller and clicked on Propertes, and I found the Device Status was "Disabled". I clicked on the "Enable" button, and the SD-Card reader immediately started working again.

The WIFI is there and works, but there is no device shown in the Hardware Manager for any ehternet card. I believe it should be a Realtek PCIe card.In short, I want to make a wired network connection to my router. This computer has doen it in the past.

A:4540s hardware manager does not show any ethernet card

Hi: Your notebook has a LAN/WLAN switching setting, and a LAN power save setting in the BIOS. The default for both of these settings is enabled. When an ethernet cable is not connected to the PC with these settings enabled, the ethernet adapter is turned off to save battery power and does not show up in the device manager. Once you connect an ethernet cable, the PC detects that and turns on the Realtek ethernet adapter and turns off the wireless card. If you always want to see the ethernet adapter in the device manager, go into the BIOS and disable the LAN Power Save setting. If you don't want the wireless card or ethernet adapter to turn off when one or the other is on line, then disable the LAN/WLAN switching setting.

I have a friend's laptop (Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4040) that she recently got and I can't get the wifi on this thing to work. The built-in wifi card shows fine in Device Manager, but, if I attempt to use it in a network, I get a vague error about driver issues. She got a USB wifi adapter, as well, and the same thing is happening with it. I've installed the drivers from the Toshiba website and made sure they were up to date with Windows for the built-in card and used the CD that came with the on networks wifi adapter to install that driver. Neither adapter shows up in ipconfig /all, either.

Might anyone know where to go next? I could reinstall Windows, but I fear there's something simpler I'm missing.

If the player is more than six months old its probably dirt. GENTLY blow out the drive with compressed air making sure you dont get and of the propellant on the lens.

It could also be a driver or conflict.

1- use the below to help identify which.

2-check event viewer (type eventvwr in search). go to the windows log>application tab. Look for critical errors (they have red in the left hand column) that say app hang, app crash, or anything related to the problem.

When you find them note the event ID and source codes and tell us hat they are.

3-boot into safe mode (with networking). Does it still do it then? If not it is probably a software conflict.

4- go into device manager (type device manager in search). Are there any "unknown drivers" with yellow question marks on them?

Using windows 7 repair the disk letters are not the same as when in windows os. when in windows all drives (disks, dvd-roms, and usb backup drive) are lettered as they should be. the system reserved partition is not lettered and only shows up in disk management. no problems with booting up and using windows or any apps.
When going into repair ether by the f8 on boot or using the windows install disk or by using the repair disk and selecting command prompt >diskpart.>list volume the screen shows that the system reserved partition is assigned letter C and the windows system is assigned letter E. there is no usb drive listed. When trying to restore system image from the repair menu the windows system image is listed as drive E. and no backup image can be found.
From what I have read the system reserved partition should not have a letter assigned but when I remove the volume letter it returns. also you cannot change the volume letter of any drive containing the windows system.

How to fix repair so in the event of a hard drive failure I will be able to restore the image to the new drive.

BTW the usb drive is recognized in the BIOS.

A:windows repair and windows disk manager show different drive letters

Drive letters are a Windows software feature - nothing to do with hardware.

Boot into a Linux CD and it will identify partitions by the labels which are written to the HDD.

Windows shows those same labels, but it also invents drive letters.

I believe when you power up into Live Windows it remembers what the letters were previously by a registry entry.

A Windows Boot CD does not use the same registry so it invents a new set of letters for the duration.

Facts of the case: Due to much cluttering over the years, recently formatted the hard drive on an old Dell Dimension R450. Reinstalled W98 from Dell OEM disk (mainly in an attempt to keep the OEM sound system running) then installed ME. That part I finally mastered.

Also connected via USB port is Hi-Val H445EU-15R which, when I first installed it a couple of years ago ran fine. Now, Windows recognizes the drive but the “Please insert a disk into Drive F” is as far as things go. Drive wheezes, whistles, and what not but refuses to read the disk. It will respond to the "Eject" command.

I’ve removed the drive (via device manager), uninstalled/reinstalled (I think) the drivers from the Hi-Val OEM floppy, etc., etc.

For no reason that I can think of, the CD-RW suddenly came to life yesterday long enough to burn a couple of CDs then just as suddenly went back into hibernation.

Any ideas?

In 'folder options' the action of 'show' and 'don't show' hidden files have got interchanged.

So, when I select 'don't show' hidden files are shown, and vice versa.

How to get this back to normal?

I am trying to setup a default user or machine setup for how win7 handles folder view options. I want show hidden folders to be set to on for all users and the hide extensions for know file types to be unchecked or turned off ffor all users (so extensions show)
I have located them in the registry but they do not seem to be applied to all users.
Below is the registry settings I have set

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

When I create a new account to test the folder options are still hiding hidden files and not showing extensions.

Any suggestions

A:show hidden folders show file extensions thru registry

You're close but in the wrong area.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

I have been having problems with Media Center, not downloading the guide.  I have been trying to follow all of Microsoft's recommendations for a fix.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.  The advice told me to go into Services and find two files on the list and make sure they were both started:

Windows Media Center Receiver Service (was started), and
Windows Media Center Scheduler Service (wasn't started, I started it).
Then it told be to go to Show Processes from all Users.  And find six files on the list.  The instructions assumed the files would be there.  Only one of the files is.
How do I get the missing five files on the list?:
ehmsas.exe (missing)
ehrecvr.exe (on the list)
ehsched.exe (missing)
ehschell.exe (missing)
ehtray.exe (missing)
mcGlidHost.exe (missing)

Microsoft's directions d that these files would all be there.  It did not say what to do if any were missing.

Please HELP!!!

Internet Explorer - Will download anything with no problem. Everything works like normal but when you go and check where your file is where you had put it, nothing is there. I did a computer search and it finds the file where it is suppose to be but Its not there O_O. When I try and drag the file from the search it just becomes a shortcut that leads no where.
Google Chrome - Won't download a single thing. Everything fails it's "Virus Scan".
I've tried Googling both problems and found lots of people with both of the same problems I'm having and tried there solutions and it's gotten me no where. I also ran Malwarebytes and it said I was clean. Not sure what to do here . Any help is appreciated. thanks
EDIT: Also I have Windows Vista

A:IE downloads wont show up in destination and Google Chrome wont download

My firefox was working absolutely fine.

Today when I opened techguy.org in firefox 3.0.8, i cudnt see the arrows besides New Posts and Quick Links at the top. On clicking either of the above 2 links, it does not give a drop down menu but the page just refreshes. Also I am not able to use any of the formatting options in the message textbox on the Post New Thread or Post New Message page. Im not even able to use the formatting options in the Quick Reply text box. Also, when I write a message in which I have used [Enter] for a new line and put 3 paragraphs in a message, the message when posted appears as one single, that is it is not recognising the [enter/return].

The drop down menus for the forum options bar(the menu above which has options: Security& HJT, Software & Hardware, Operating Systems, Internet & Networking, General Tech, Community) is working fine.

The other thing is that I cannot open Gmail normally. After sometime it tells me Try Reloading the Page. Gmail opens in basic HTML.

Techguy and Gmail both are working absolutely fine in IE7(wish it was the other way round, I wudnt even have bothered).

I am posting this message using IE7.

Please help...

I have a prob with my Seagate 1TB external hard drive working on my G4 Powerbook (Leopard OSX). I have a Maxtor 200 gb drive that works perfectly. But The 1TB drive doesn't always appear on the desktop but does show in the system profiler. When it does show up on the desktop my files missing from from folders. Finally on the few times that files show up, I can't open them. I had error messages about permission to open the files but the drive and files all have read/write permission.

I use the drive for backup. The files on this drive are from the Maxtor drive, random disks and my thinkpad which runs Vista.
Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

A:USB drive won't show on desktop / files won't show in folders

It's Vista's Security System. Go through the help file and it will tell you how to turn it off

I mistakenly tried M/S Backup to back up My Documents so I can reformat...

Should have known better as I know it is not good...

Anyway I used CD-RW discs all new... and as the backups didn't record I erased the discs. Although they open up and show completely blank, they show as full in properties...trying to use CD Creator as I normally do tells me that the discs are 10 MB when I know they are 650 MB....

Does anyone know why this is...I'm not bothered about the discs they are cheap enough to throw away and replace, I'll carry on copying and pasting or using CD Creator in the future it's just bugging me as to why this happens...

A:CD-RW discs show blank but show full in properties

don't know why it's doing it, but have you tried to reformat to reclaim the space?

I am having the often discussed "IE wont show pics just little boxes with x's in them" issue. It happens only on some webpages, ie www.cnn.com and www.weather.com .

Ive read through past threads about this issue. I dont have norton firewall, I have all proper file associations, etc. The only thing that solves this issue, and then only partly solves it, is changing the encoding to western european (windows) and auto select. That gets the page and pictures to load correctly, however, there are 2 issues with this which are driving me NUTS:

1. When I change the encoding settings to Western European (windows) and Auto Select, offending webpages display correctly. However, the encoding will get all screwed up as soon as I goto another webpage, thus making me fiddle with the encoding settings everytime a page loads up wrong.
2. Even after I change the encoding settings, I can not see thumbnails, this is especially disturbing.

So my questions are as follows:

1. How do I get the encoding settings to stay the same no matter what, so I dont have to keep changing them?
2. Even after I change the encoding settings, why wont it display thumbnails, and how can I get thumbnails to display again?

And just one more note, this issue just started happening on its own recently. WinXP, IE6, brand new pc basically

A:IE6 wont show pics or thumbnails, and wont keep encoding settings

So I had this Bluetooth mouse that I only used occasionally. After installing Windows 8, I tried turning it on only to find that it was wasn't functioning. So, naturally I thought of pairing it once more. Unfortunately, the god damn thing just wont show up! I have a feeling it's because I had that mouse as an active device when I was on Windows 7. Anyway to get this to show.

I have a feeling completely removing any traces of the mouse might get it to work again. But I don't know how to do that. I removed it from Device Manager's Bluetooth Devices' section but that didn't do the trick. Furthermore, the Mouse Settings' Bluetooth Tab still lists my mouse as a functioning device although it doesn't show up in the Control Panel's Bluetooth Device list.

PS: The Mouse has no issues. It works fine on my Friends system on Windows 8.

A:My Bluetooth Mouse wont Pair... Heck it wont even show up!

Update Bluetooth drivers to latest, and then also the mouse drivers to latest.

If this is a Razer device as your screen name alludes to, be prepared for the possibility of multiple bsods a day. Razer is good for that, for sure. Maybe you'll luck out and they've actually fixed their drivers by now instead of putting fake dates on their webpage that make it look like ancient drivers are new.

So I just re-installed my Windows 7 and re-formatted my disk after getting the virus Win32:Sality. However, after I installed my graphics drivers and restarted my computer, the taskbar and icons wouldn't show. I can see my cursor and can move it. I can right click and get options as well. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the screen just goes black. I can still see and move my cursor. This happened after I installed my graphics drivers.

EDIT: Safe mode works fine.

A:Taskbar and icons wont show up. Ctrl+Alt+Del wont work

Did you install the motherboard drivers first?
