Outlook 2003: Outlook Today unable to display the folder.

Q: Outlook 2003: Outlook Today unable to display the folder.

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP2 in a standalone configuration with Win XP Professional SP2.

When I click on the Inbox item on the Outlook Today screen (not referring here to the file list at the left of the screen) I get the following message:

"Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook could not access the specified folder location."

I backed up my .pst (and archive) files, uninstalled Outlook, re-started Windows, and re-installed Outlook. The problem persisted.

I can click on Inbox in the file list on the left of the Outlook screen - works fine. The problem is more of an annoyance than a major problem, but I'm uneasy that something's not working proprerly - Outlook's too important to me for odd, unexplained things to be happening!

Preferred Solution: Outlook 2003: Outlook Today unable to display the folder.

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

I have some users on Outlook 2003.
Here is the situation: When he opens outlook it automatically opens with the Outlook Today window. That is fine. But after he moves around and goes to the Inbox and then clicks on the Tasks. When he clicks on mail again he wants to go back to the Outlook today window.
He says he has done this on his home Outlook but can't remember how he did it.
Is there a way to do this.
I have played around but could not find a setting.
Any help would be great.

Today I was setting up a new computer at work Windows XP /Microsoft Office 2003 for an employee. The employee old computer was using Windows 2000 /Microsoft Office 2000.
So I setup the user email on the new computer and everything was fine until I archive his old emails. It created the archive folder but it gives me an error message when trying to click on the folder. It says, "Unable to display the folder it has reach its maximum size".

I tried the Detect and Repair and the Scanpst.exe but it did not work. I even tried to delete his user profile and re-create it but only some of his email shows up in his inbox.

We use Microsoft exchange server here.

His pst folder is over 9,000,000

Does anyone has any suggestions to get this fix?

A:Outlook 2003 Unable to display page in Archive folder

your main problem is exceeded the size of PST file. Old version of the Outlook support only 2GB PST file size. Increasing uses of emails, the size of PST file get larger than 2GB. Due to larger size PST file get corrupted and all your mails and contacts are lost.

Inbox repair tool can help you to recover all emails and contacts from corrupted PST file. But if problem get complex inbox repair tool cannot correct the problem. In this condition, outlook pst repair software can help you. Outlook pst repair software support larger then PST files. First you can try demo version and if satisfied with preview, get full version of the software.

I was wondering if anyone has seen this and has the fix for it. I'm running Outlook 2003 under Windows XP. When starting Outlook, I will momentarily see pending calendar items and tasks on the Outlook Today panel but it then goes blank. In addition, the Save Changes function on Outlook Today customization seems to be ignored. I'm the administrator of my local PC. I've tried the Detect and Repair option with no luck. Following a Microsoft tech letter, I renamed outlwvw.dll and had the system reinstall the dll - again no change.

If anyone knows what is wrong I'll be very grateful. Many thanks.

When I try to open my sent items folder in my Archive folder I get a message:
"Unable to display the folder. Could not complete the operation. One or more parameter values are not valid."

I can see the folder size and properties through right clicking on the folder but it will not open. It is a large folder with over 500,000KB. HTe other potential problem was that I was compressing the whole Archive Folder but stoped it halfway through because it took so long.

I am using Outlook 2002 on Windows ME.

Does anyone know how I can get into the folder?

Many thanks,

I am having a strange problem on a computer where the user is unable to view encrypted (via MS Exchange/Cert Authority) emails in her SENT folder. She can open encrypted emails in her INBOX normally.

I have checked her encryption certificate in Active Directory, Outlook, and IE. I have removed her key via IE and reinstalled it. I have reinstalled Office 2003.

When she attempts to open an encrypted message from her SENT folder, it asks for her password, BUT the password is not accepted. It's the same password she uses to open an encrypted message in the INBOX.

Outlook is up to date with patches and the back end is Exchange 2003. Outlook is not running in cached mode.

As a test, I had her send herself an encrypted email. She could open THAT email from her SENT folder, but only that email.

Is there a setting to clear her encryption key completely? I don't know where else to look as I've never had this issue come up before.

Hello! I am running Windows 98, Outlook 2000. Our hard drive heated up (very dusty) and after that I was unable to access my In Box (indicates 3 unread messages) in my Personal Folders. When I click on the In Box the error is "Unable to display the folder". Within that set of Personal Folders I can access deleted files, Drafts and other subfolders.

I tried Detect and Repair, I tried downloading service pack 1. Also, my address book disappeared. I was able to find Contacts and print a hard copy of email addresses, but Import/Export is 'greyed out'. My calendar, with standing appointments is gone.
I may have made the problem worse by moving around subfolders between "Outlook Today Archive Folders" and Personal Folders. I also have since received more email and so now I do not trust my archive.pst or outlook.pst to be the 'best copy'.

Any ideas? Salvagable? I am thinking of going to Windows 2000, and buying Outlook 2003 and rebuilding my address book and cutting my losses with email. Recommendations?

Thank you!!

We recently moved from a third party email server(DeskNow), and we had a default Calendar of appointments for the day that allowed all users to see all of the Day's activities on the Home page. Now we are using Exchange 2007 and our users are on Outlook 2003. We setup a virtual environment on 3 host servers running server 2008 with Exchange 2007 and SQL server 2005.
I would like to be able to setup a policy or something that would put a shared calendar that would be updated by certain users to be on all clients Outlook Today when users open their outlook clients in their terminal server session.
Basically when a user opens their outlook 2003, I want a shared calendar or some type of medium to display any of today's activities on the Outlook Today page.

If more information is needed, please let me know.

Why can't it find the server or global address list? I was able to connect via VPN.

Sometimes, Outlook launches and hangs with "Loading Dataset" showing in lower-left corner of Outlook; Outlook will eventually "un-hang" and seems to work properly.
Have not been able to determine any course of events that determines which of the three occurs.

As a work-around, disabled "Start in Outlook Today" and issue no longer occurs; Outlook launches without problem or hang.

I've searched all through Technet and MSDN resources, but have not been able to locate any article referencing this issue.

I have the same problem in both applications (outlook XP/2003 beta).
I have two E-mail accounts.

1. is an exchange account (current set as default)
2. a private email account
when I send internal mails (in the office) outlook use the exchange server...as I set (that is OK!).
but when I will send an external email (for example to [email protected] )
Outlook use also the exchange server to send the email and I get an error message.
The only possibility to send external mails is for me to set the email account by hand for every
outgoing mail.

The proble doesn't exist with outlook 2000.
Outlook 2000 automatically use the second email account when it see that the mail must
be send to an extrenal account.

Things are divided into categories, too. Today is a category, yesterday is another category and so on. I don't like any of this at all. I want my messages to appear in single lines and none of this yesterday-today stuff with plus/minus symbols.

Hey everyone --

OK, so I've been looking around the web for a while for an answer for this problem, but so far I haven't found any answers that have helped me. I'm having trouble on a computer in my office with it not being able to access its sent items folder. When I click on the folder, all I get on the screen is a gray box that says "Unable to display the folder." Every other folder works, and Outlook is checking everything out fine. I tried running MS's Inbox Repair Tool but I'm still having the same problem afterward. The only thing I can seem to find which is the cause of the problem is when outlook is networked in with an exchange server, which we don't have. The strangest thing of all is that the message counter that sits next to the sent folder keeps going up every time an email is sent out, showing that Outlook can access the file and save sent emails, yet there is no way for us to see them. If it helps, this computer also has ACT installed and the plugin active in Outlook.

Any ideas?!

Hi route66

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you tried creating a new Personal Folder and seeing if the same behavior exists in the new Personal Folder as well?

If it does, try creating a new Profile.
If it doesn't, then you can make the new Personal Folders the default Personal Folders.
You can then either copy the folders from the old Personal Folders into the new Personal Folders or keep two Personal Folders open in Outlook 2003.

You can have several Personal Folders open in Outlook 2003.

Create a new Personal Folder (.pst) file and make it the default delivery location.

File > New > Outlook Data File
Name the new .pst file.
It should open in Outlook 2003.

Copy a message over to the Inbox of the new Personal Folders and see if the deletion process works properly in the new Personal Folders.
**To make the new Personal Folders the default delivery location:

Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts
In the drop down field for: Deliver new e-mail to the following location:
Select the new Personal Folders (.pst) file.

Close and restart Outlook 2003 for the changes to go into effect.

With Outlook 2003 closed, create a new Profile,

Hi Guyz,

having a bit of a really annoying problem with the public folders.
In my organisation we have a calender list for everyone in the whole organisation, so that when staff come into the office in the morning they open thier own calender from the public folder and input where they will be at certain times on that day as alot of my staff move around offices and are out at meetings alot etc.

The problem i am having as that some (NOT ALL) of my staff are comming in to office in the morning and when they click on thier own calender, outlook jumps about 6 calenders up and takes them into someone elses.
Ive sat and watch it happening. Just with a single click, definately clicking on thier own calender, but jumps into someone elses.
They then have to re-click thier own calender again in order to access it.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this and how i can stop it?

Last winter I did a mass mailing from a folder in the "Contacts" section called "Companies".

Recently, I wanted to do another mailing so I went into the "Contacts" section but the folder "Companies" was not there. Other folders in "Contacts" were there but not that one. How it disappeared I do not know.

When I go into the "Sent" section and back to last winter I can search on the name of any addressee in the mass mailing and it brings up the full record as I made in the "Companies" folder. So, it is there somewhere, but I can't find it.

Also, in Outlook 2003, I can go to "Tools" and then click on "Address Book". In that section it asks me "Show names from the:" and it gives me a dron-down menu of folders in the Contacts area and "Companies" is one of the ones listed. When I click on it, it comes up with a list of names and email addresses of all the people in the "Companies" folder. So, it exists somewhere. Any idea of how I can find it??

A coworker's computer was running a Chinese version of Windows XP Pro and was having all kinds of problems. We wiped the hard drive and reinstalled an English version of Windows XP Pro that had originally been installed on it. We installed Asian language support for the new installation. We also did an SP3 update.

Before wiping it, we backed up the user's documents folders and Outlook 2003 PST files. MS-Office 2003 was reinstalled without any problems during the installation process. We then restored the PST files. We found that some folder names showed up in English while many others looked like other random graphics and symbols, but not Chinese characters. The heading for the inbox also has these gibberish characters. I suspect that the folder names correctly showed Chinese characters when running on the Chinese version of Windows. The contents of emails written in Chinese show correctly.

Searching the Internet for a few days did not find a similar problem being discussed. Do we need to install some other fonts? Change some registry settings to have Outlook use extended coding for Chinese characters? Manually edit all of the folder descriptions using readable text?

That is a different situation restoring a PST that was backed up from a Chinese version of Windows XP. The characters although not Chinese could be remnants from the previous OS language or there could possibly be some corruption in the PST.

Maybe try running ScanPST to see if it will fix your PST file. I forget the location in XP/ Office 2003 but, you may find it if you search for scanpst.exe. There are also 3rd party recovery tools out there that may help.

I'm interested to see if there are any other ideas out there.

just like the subject states my 2003 does not empty the delete folder unless I do it manually. It states emptying when I shut it down but nothing happens. Any ideas (and yes I have switched the delete button on and off numerous times)?

Don't use Outlook as much as I used to so I don't know when this actually started.

When I try create a new email...Outlooks looks for the Contacts 'folder'...but I get an error saying "The address list could not be displayed..."

I then go to 'address book' and see that there are two entries for Contacts...the fist choice gives the above error (capture.jpg). When I click the second (bottom) Contacts...then everything pops up normally ?

How do I get rid of/delete the 1st Contacts listed in (doublecontacts.jpg) attached.
