I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

At my workplaced I've been tasked to setup a new server (Windows 2008 R2) and install and configure all its services. I use Remote Desktop to login using my normal domain account, which has standard user permissions on that server. I also have been provided with another account that has administrator access there, which I use to satisfy UAC prompts. So far, so good.

Now my small problem. At some point the multiple installers I ran request a reboot. But the typical start menu or the "close Windows" dialog, as I was running as standard user, neither show the "reboot" or "shutdown" options, which I need. This seems logical as I don't have permission (2008 by default only gives admins shutdown permissions, contrary to 7 that gives all users that access).

My (lame) workaround was to open an elevated command prompt (hence gaining the required permission) and issue a shutdown command. That worked and the server rebooted as it should, but I would like a more serious option to do it, specifically that the normal shut down dialog to display the missing options, asking for elevation when needed.
Any ideas?

A:Reboot a server from a standard user account

It's actually a restriction of Remote Desktop, not Administrator vs non-Administrator. I don't know of any work around other than using the shutdown command as you did.

I have a print server running 2003 standard sp2, I have been looking for a way to allow helpdesk staff install and manage printers without logging into the server and without adding them to the admin group.

So I added them to the power users group and the print operators group, that worked fine they were able to UNC ( \\servername ) to the server and install printers, drivers, as well as uninstall drivers? printers ect????.
Now the problem??? this works great from an XP box, but when we try it from a windows 7 machine we get access denied. More specifically it acts like it is going to install the printer then when it comes to the driver installation part it fails ?Printer driver was not installed. Access is denied.?

No changes have been made to the permissions I can log into an XP machine with my profile and it works fine log out go to a Windows 7 machine use the same credentials and I get the above message access is denied. I am an admin of both machines on the windows 7 machine I have UAC turned off completely. Running XP Pro SP3 & Windows 7 pro both are 32 bit machines.

I should also add that I have made the necessary group policy changes to allow printer operators to Load/Unload device drivers and under the local policies/security options I ensured that the Prevent users from installing printer drivers was Disabled.

Any help would be much appreciated.

How do you enter the credentials on the Windows 7 machine? I've noticed that you have to use "domain\username" rather than just the username in some cases.

Hi all,

I've been having a problem with Windows updates on my (Win7) pc for some time now.

Downloading the updates usually doesn't pose a problem, but after rebooting it says "error configuring Windows updates reverting changes". That's when the loop starts: my system reboots and tries to configure the updates again, fails and reboots etc. The only way to get out of this is to press F8 and use system recovery. After this happened today I checked Windows update. All of the updates failed except for one(?).

- So far, I downloaded (and ran) the System Update Readiness Tool.

- I ran the SFC scan. It identified a number of problems, but it was unable to fix all of them.

- I can't include Windows update error codes in this post, because they do not appear (anymore). Therefor I check the update history instead.

Please see the log collection attached to this post.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

I have one machine running Windows XP and I am unable to make a connection via RDP to Windows Server 2016.
I have managed to make successful connection to Windows 2012 and even Windows 10 with latest build.

I have edited these registry keys
-adding tspkg
-adding credssp.dll
Also updated RDP client on winXP to 7.0 enviroment

I have tried 2 different machines with 2016 system.
The connection is not refused by any error (EventViewer is empty on both machines). RDP ask for credentials and then show message "Cant connect to the remote computer try it later"
Do you have any ideas how to solve it ?

Thanks for any help

Hi Guys I look at this forum often in the background and i have had a question of my own.

I'm going to set up a server for a friend, mainly file storeage. I was hoping to put WS2008R2 Std, but WS2008 std will do if i can't get R2 in time.

I have seen other post about compatiblity between XP desktops and the server and my question is a little more in depth.

I want to set up a domain on the server, dhcp, and file security levels for some of the folders. I think thats about it, nothing fancy, AD maybe. Sort of winging it as I go.

Is this going to be compatible?

Is there any tools that support Windows Server 2016 ?

I needed to install .NET 3.5 on Server 2016 but have hit all of the roadblocks and need help. Here is what I have tried so far...

I tried to add the feature via the server manager but it ended with code 0x80070002. I did have to provide a path to the sources\sxs folder for the cab file which I expected but that didn't help.I tried using the DISM powershell command to add the feature, both using the source location and also using /All so that it downloads the files from Windows Update. The end result was the same as #1 attempt - 0x80070002.I made sure all updates for the OS have been applied and that updates for 'other Microsoft products' was checked. this made no change in the error.I checked the installed packages via powershell and it shows 3.5 as removed, which again is expected for Server 2016 as they intentionally left it out but provided the cab file in the install media.I have executed a clean sfc /scannow with no errorsI have run a clean dism package commandI have tried installing under a fresh admin user profileI have researched for around 3 hours on the forums so I look forward to the various input
I have uploaded both the DISM and CBS logs. I started fresh with both logs so they contain only details related to a single attempt t install via the server manager.
Thanks for the help!

Dear IT Pros,
I have 2 questions that need your help and professional advice.
1) Does Microsoft has a tool to check whether a patch (KB) was superseded by another KB? In my case, I'm trying to search whether this KB4022715 and KB4025339 (both of this KB was released in 2017) was superceded
by another KB. This is because a security consultant has advised us to install both of this KB to prevent vulnerabilities but since it was released back in 2017, I suspect there must be a newer KB that supercedes it
2) Can advice what KB I need to download regarding this 2 bulletin ID CVE-2017-5715 and CVE-2019-11135? Can't seem to find it after much googling

Thanks in advance for the help

I am the Network Support Technician for a county entity.  We have a few (5) computers still running Windows 7 because of proprietary software that will only run in 7.  All but one updates without a problem.  This one is an HP Compaq Pro 6305
MT with an HP 1850 MB, 3.8 ghz AMD A10-5800B APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 4GB memory, Windows 7 Professional (X64) w/ Service Pack 1, Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512 GB.  We installed Office 2016 Standard on in last year, and it runs fine.  It updated up
until March 2017.  In march Microsoft put out updates for Office, as well as other updates.
It refused to update the Office files citing error code 80070663.  We ran Windows Update Repair, found corrupted database and registry entries, it says it fixed them, still no Update, same error code.  Reset Windows Update components manually
through CMD line entries, same error.  Repaired Office through Programs and Features, same error.  Uninstalled and re-installed Office, same error.  tried to install updates through download and install, "Error in detection".  Ran
DISM, CheckSUR.log says no errors found.  Ran Clean boot, We were able to install Security Updates for Windows 7, but same error for Office updates.
I have saved the CBS, CheckSUR, CheckSUR.Persist, DISM, ReportingEvents, and setupact files if anyone wants to take a crack at it.

I know that user information is correct, because I can connect using any Windows 10 computer. I have tried this from multiple Windows 7 computers, they all give the same error. I don't have any problems at all with Windows 10.

So, this seems to be isolated to Windows 7.
Has anyone seen this or know how to get around this issue?

Hi, we are becoming more and more frustrated with the forced windows updates. These may help home users but professional products like servers are not for everyday users and sometimes require alot of configuration to get legacy applications to work.
Windows will at times force updates no matter what we choose in respect to disable them. It is NOT up to Microsoft to determine if or when the servers I am responsible for need to be patched. Any reading and research we have done here has only yielded the
ability to prolong the updates. Once installed over 50% of the servers give an endless spinning circle and require restore or rebuild, this has become unacceptable and has forced us to start testing our applications with different Linux flavors.

Is there a way to STOP the updates indefinitely?

Running the following cmdlet on a Setting that is in the "NOTSET" state works fine, after setting it to Enable/Disable using the following powershell cmdlet:

Set-ProcessMitigation -System -Enable SEHOP

I get this error:
Set-ProcessMitigation : Destination array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower
At line:1 char:1
+ Set-ProcessMitigation -System -Enable SEHOP
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-ProcessMitigation], ArgumentException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.ArgumentException,Microsoft.Samples.PowerShell.Commands.SetProcessMitigationsComm

and I am unable to ever change the setting again using PowerShell commands. The same process works without issue on Windows 10, the issue only seems to exist on Server 2019. Changing the setting using the Windows Security GUI works as expected.

For other controls, such as DEP, CFG,  I still get the error, but the command applies the new setting properly anyway. So far SEHOP is the only setting that is unchangeable, but there may be others as we haven't tested extensively yet. It fails for both
System and App level settings.

I see that there is a Windows 7 and a Windows 10 forum but my Windows Update problem is on a Windows 2012 Server Standard machine. Would it be OK to post in here, or is there a different sister forum I should post in?

Thank you

A:Window 2012 Server Standard Windows Updates Broken

Slipstick.com is the best resource, same as Microsoft's Technet site.

Very few on here play with Server 2012 or Server 2008.

This is my first thread

When i install sql server 2000 standard edition i have a message
" Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition Server Component is not supported on this operating system only client components will be available for installation"

Hence I cannot install properly. I installed only the client componets. Thereafter when I went through Enterprise Manager and tried to establish a connection, I failed. It said server does not exist.

What to do now?

I found out that if one has sql server 2000 standard editon the prerequisties are
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later, Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 5 or later, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows 2000 Datacenter Server.

I have windows xp professional version on which i am installing sql server.

But i have seen many persons who have installed sql server standard edition in windows xp pro.
They downloaded something(probably a service pack) and went into regedit

Kindly let me know what do download and what to do after going inside regedit.

Do these "many persons" actually run the SQL Server engine on their computers or did they just install the client tools to be able to connect to another SQL Server machine?

Historically I've used the following syntax with NetMon to determine which switch/switchport each of my server interfaces are connected to:

nmcap.exe /network "<interfacename>" /DisableLocalOnly /capture SNAP.EtherType == 0x2000 /StopWhen /TimeAfter 2 min /file "<filename>.cap"

With MMA, I can just do a filter for LLDP, and get the same information, at least on my Windows 10 laptop that is.  When I run a capture either locally on a Windows 2016 server, or remotely against
a Windows 2016 server there are no LLDP packets captured.

Am I doing something wrong?

Just bought new Spectre x360 convertible computer with Windows 2016. Left computer idle for a few minutes (15) and returned to screen saver.  Clicked on the enter button to get to password screen and entered password.  After entering it, the wheel of death started and kept spinning.  When I tried to turn the computer off, I may have accidentally hit stand by mode.  Then the screen started flashing.  I quickly unplugged everything.  It did come back on and I didn't lose anything.   What should I do so that this doesn't happen again?

I've recently installed KB4467864 on my 2016 Datacenter SQL server and now when I try to login it just goes black. No GUI no errors. I've rebooted, I've tried safe mode, I've cold powered down and booted up and nothing fixes this. This is my 2nd server 2016
SQL server VM I've installed it on and both have the same issues. I have a Server 2016 datacenter SQL box that I hadn't installed this on yet and it works just fine. Last update it has is KB4467691.

Anyone else seeing this? Or what else can I do to fix it? I've even tried stopping SQL server and agent to see if that would do it, but no difference. Please help I do not want to rebuild this SQL box. Thankfully its not quite in production yet but this
will put us behind if I have to redo the OS.

Thank you!

Hi there, I am looking for Network drivers for the ThinkCentre M720s for use in Windows Server 2016. The reason for this is to allow a group of users to RDP into the PC in order to use an application. I have another PC of the same Modle type which shows Intel 219-V Network hardware installed, but cannot find the drivers needed for this. Any pointers most welcome!

I am trying to add Windows 10 clients to Windows Server essentials 2016. It seem that in order for the server to see the clients I must the clients join the server server Domain. (Currently they are in a workgroup).

It looks like one has to change the Windows10 clients to access the WSE-2016 DNS. So in windows 10 I go to networks, bring up the adaptor setting. Bring up "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IvP4) and instead of "Obtain the DNS address automatically" change it to always get the DNS address on the WSE-2016 (found with ipconfig).
Then within Windows I use ?System?, ?about?, and Join the server DOMAIN. It now works. The client can now see the Server domain.
I can then see the Server files and the server can see the Windows 10 shared files.
There are still problems however.
When I reboot the Windows 10 client. I have a brand new user screen with only some of my original desktop icons showing. Do I have to essentially rebuild up everything on my desktop again!
Question: Is there not a way to have my original desktop appear when I am joined to the Domain.
Second, since there will be times when the server is off I used the router static DNS IP address as the alternative address in the above dialog box of the Windows10 clients. Seems to work since the client can access the internet even with the WSE 2016 off.
Here is my second question. I have a few home laptops as well. If I force the DNS to the server what happens when I travel. ... Read more
