Can I put an SSD drive in my ideapad 510?

Q: Can I put an SSD drive in my ideapad 510?

Hi, I have literally just bought an ideapad 510 laptop that comes with just a 1tb 5400rpm hard drive, it's a Xmas present for myself lol I haven't opened it yet if cause but I have seen these ssd drives going pretty cheap at the moment Crucial MX300 525 GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD and wondered 1. Will it fit in my laptop along side the current drive and 2. Is there an easy way of moving the OS straight over to the ssd. And 3. If answer to number 2 is no how would I be best going about setting the ssd as the main drive and installing my windows 10 in it and then formatting my current drive?Any help would be great as I haven't bought the ssd yet but am really tempted while it's cheap. RegardsJames

Preferred Solution: Can I put an SSD drive in my ideapad 510?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

Per page 63 of the Lenovo ideapad 510-15ISK/ ideapad 510-15IKB Hardware Maintenance Manual item #4, your laptop uses one of 3 9.0mm optical drives (see below) so a 9.5mm caddy may not work.   There are some 9.0mm universal versions like this one available, but I have not used them, so be sure to check with the seller for capatability before ordering. No     Description                                                                      Part# /FRU4        HLDS GUE0N 9.0mm Slim Tray Rambo ODD             5DX0J464884        PLDS DA-8A6SH 9.0mm  Slim Tray Rambo ODD      5DX0F864044        TSST SU-228GB 9.0 Rambo ODD                                5DX0H14227 Lenovo ideapad 510-15ISK/ ideapad 510-15IKB Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_510-15isk_510-15ikb_hmm_201604.pdf Cheers,

Hello,I've recently purchased the IdeaPad 320-15ABR. I would prefer an internal Optical Disk Drive, but is proving difficult to work out which one i require / best fit to purchase. Is anyone able to advise on the best internal DVD ROM / RW drive and where to purchase? Would prefer to get an internal rather an external, as it's less to lug about.I've looked in many places but can't work out what is suitable and what is not. I thought it would be easy to source, but was wrong. Help / advice much appreciated. Thanks. First Time Lenovo user, UK based.

Hi, I just bought an Ideapad 320s with 128GB pre-installed.

I cloned the drive onto a 500GB 2.5" Samsung SSD.

On opening the Ideapd to remove the old 128GB I found... a big gap where the SSD should have been!

So it seems the original 128GB must be on the motherboard or something and there is an expansion slot for a 2nd drive.

After much hassle, I managed to format the 500GB drive and fit it into the Idaepad...

But it can't see it!

Can I have a 2nd SSD or not?? Or do I have to install the Windows OS on the new 500GB SSD and just lose the original 128GB to nothing?

Thanks.

Im Thinking about buying an Lenovo ideapad 520, I've done my research and this looks promising. The only downside being it lacks SSD drive. I'm wondering if its possible to install an SSD drive? or even replace the DVD-Writer with an SSD drive maybe? And would this effect the overall configuration? or cause any conflicts with other hardware?Has anyone done this before? or any recommendations on what SSD should I get if this is possible?

I'm considering the Ideapad 510 15" (Part Number 80SR0055CF).  i5-6200U, 4GB onboard RAM, 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/500-series/510-15-inch/ Can I upgrade the RAM myself? I see some 510 models have 4GB onboard + a 4GB DIMM so I'm assuming that if I get the 4GB onboard they'll be an empty DIMM slot I could add RAM to, is that the case?  If so, what's the max memory I could add? What about the hard drive, can it be upgraded/replaced?  At some point I would probably want to put in an SSD. If someone could link to the hardware maintenance manual that would be really useful, then I could check these things myself.  I can't find the manual for this particular laptop.  Thank you! Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.I edited the mod's edit because they tagged it as "510-15ISK" which I'm pretty sure is a Yoga, I'm looking at the Ideapad not the Yoga. I added a link to the product page for further clarity. Lenovo's product naming is confusing so I'm not sure.

Hello I've got IdePad 310-15ABR from this link:http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ie/pl/products/laptops-and-netbooks/300-series/310-15abr/80st/80st002kuk... My question is: Is it possible to use empty space of disc drive to add second drive or dvd/bluray drive or not?? I'm talking about space that's normally occupied by dvd drive but I've got model without it so wondering about this thing. It's on the right side of the laptop. Regards, Horacy.

A:ideapad 310-15abr is it possible to add 2nd hdd or dvd drive?

You would have to search to see if their is a adaptor available. I know I have bought a optical slot adaptor for a drive. But that was for a ThinkPad which I think has more options then the consumer line IdealPads. Probably your best bet is a big flash drive, or a external drive. But search third parties because you could possible buy the adaptor and crudely install a drive in the optical. So many optical drives are thin drives these days, so space may be a issues.

I use Macrium reflect imaging software and plan to be prepared for a Lenovo crash. The problem is that for the recovery the Lenovo would have to boot from the flash drive and in order to do so I would have to change the boot order--which was easy in older laptops. Now in the Lenovo and others, you have safe boot, fast boot, legacy boot, etc and choosing what to do is complicated and threatening. I tried tweaking in a Dell and later could not boot the laptop. Please advise.

I don't know what to do at this point i've never owned a computer that doesnt have openings on the bottom for replacing ram and hard drive. I would also like to replace the 4gb ram module it came with with an 8gb module. Does anyone know how i should go about this? So I was playing with my laptop when suddenly the game froze. I tried to Alt + Tab but then the whole desktop froze. I also noticed that my laptop was very warm. Without anything happening, I decided to manually shut it down with the power button.  But when I opened it, the screen was stuck at the Lenovo logo but the loading wasn't appearing. After that, a boot menu opened but it just kept saying "Media not found". I did some research and used BIOS and it showed that it couldn't detect my hard drive. I've done everything from restarting to system recovery but nothing worked. Given that my defender was updated and I have not downloaded any suspicious file yet, could this be a hardware problem?  Here are some photos showing my problem

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,

Please try removing the battery, ac adaptor, and also remove any external device
Connected to your system Press the power button for 30 -45 sec, repeat the process
4 to 5 times, now connect ac adaptor switch on and try entering the Bios using F2 key.
If you are successful then proceed to boot the system using CD and check

If unsuccessful try removing the Hard Drive from the laptop to check if the system is booting using CD rom drive

If successful try reconnecting Hard Drive back to check, If same issue is there that means the HDD is faulty and needs to be replaced. You may please contact Local Lenovo Support  to have system verified

I have just purchased a Lenovo Ideapad 520 and would like to insert my old 700 GB HDD inside, since it only has 256 GB SSD. There is an easily removable hard drive bay pre installed and a port to connect a hard drive to but there is no connector for use between the HDD and motherboard. I purchased one connector before but it is the wrong shape and does not fit into the bay provided by lenovo so I am wondering where one can find and purchase the correct connector, does lenovo have an official one. I have tried contacting lenovo directly by web chat, email and phone and they all tell me to go to the other one, rather frustrating. any help would be great everyone

Hello, I have an ideapad 110-15, less than a year old. The DVD drive will no longer open. I try in Windows to eject it, press the button, the drive makes a sound as if its trying to open it but it doesnt. The paperclip also doesnt work. There is no disk in the tray. Could this be related to something that happened recfently -- the bottom part of the case seemed loose and I discovered half the screws were missing. I purchased Lenovo screws and fixed the case. Otherwise, nothing unusual to report. Thanks Pierre

Hi PierreScize,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If even the manual pin hole release won't work then it would be best to call in technical support to have it serviced within its warranty and at the same time have them check for loose parts within the laptop as parts congruency to adjacent parts could affect how the disc tray would slide out mechanically.

Tech support is available at  877-453-6686 24 hours/day 7 days/week

I have a Lenovo Ideapad S510p, running on Windows 10, but I've had this problem since before I upgraded (I don't remember if it was Windows 7 or 8). Basically, my CD drive is nowhere to be found under My Computer, nor in the Hardware tab. When I press the button on the drive, though, the light lights up, but doesn't eject. Inserting a pin into the tiny hole beside the button (as suggested in another forum) did not help. Following the instructions here didn't help either; I couldn't find the registry entry. I believe it may be a software problem, but I have no idea how to fix it. (I'm not a very tech person unfortunately)

Hi, I wanted to totally start over with my Ideapad. It has a Hitachi SATA of some type. Anyway, I want to load a different OS, but before I did I wanted to do a full zero insertion on the drive, from within windows. It caused windows to crash (why didn't I see that coming? ) I can boot to the USB but would like a recommendation on this: Want to first format the drive, then zero insert for full erase effect.  How is this done? Load some temp OS on the USB and then how to get to the hard drive and reformat it? Thanks.CF

A:How to reformat the hard drive on my Ideapad P500

Hi cottagefarmer ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Take note that loading the harddrive with a different OS (windows) would require you to have another product key to activate. Clearing the harddrive and its partition would also remove the factory reset image that came with the machine.

Best to plan out how you would proceed and what are the software you need including backup plan just in case.

Here are reference that you can review :

Good evening, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I have looked but didn't find a similar query. I have owned this laptop for 10 months and recently discovered that the optical drive doesn't work.  The device doesn't appear in the BIOS or on Device Manager, but is powered and if I insert a disc it does whir away but is inaccessible.  I've tried using the hardware detection wizard, but that doesn't appear to find anything and I've tried solutions to do with registry editing which also haven't resolved the issue.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thanks for taking the time to read!

A:Ideapad 510 15ISK Optical Drive Disappeared

Hi ChrisJR,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Having the optical drive not detected in the BIOS even if the power LED is not would indicate that at the machine level, it does not recognize that there is any optical drive in the system. Initially, the BIOS checks all devices I/O (input/output) as part of POST (power on self test).

Turn off the machine and remove the drive following the steps indicated from the hardware manual here (page 38).
Make sure the contact area is free as you reseat it back to the machine.
Then use the Novo button (item 3 page 58) to power on the machine for launching the BIOS / FN =F2 on restart.
Load BIOS default FN +F9 or choose it from the exit tab then save and exit.
Restart and check if the drive is working.

Else you can try the drive on another machine or to replace it with another known good drive if even cleaning it out (air canned blower / optical drive cleaner).

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

I've just got my laptop back from lenovo where they replaced the hard drive as they deemed it a faulty hard drive causig the problem. I have spent a day reinstalling all the updates for windows and now its still doing it. The problem is that whenever the computering running it seems to run upto 100% and go red in the task manager under the processing section. It seems to happen to the system or Avast Anti-virus or somethimes google chrome but it only eer seems to go to 4.5mb/s which as far as im aware it shouldnt be doing just running windows. At other times it can be at 5.0mb/s whilst running a different application but only at 30% or so. I have disabled link power manageent in the intel rapid storage software as suggested by lenovo support. I thought i't could just be a poor hard drive that they use on this model of laptop but I don't know for sure. Attached is a screenshop of the problem im trying to explain. If anyone has suggestions that could hep me I would really appreciate it. - Gecko

A:Ideapad y580 hard drive replacement

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

I have problem with my Ideapad U510. Taken to a shop. It could be a fan problem or could be a hard drive problem or both. My U510 has 24GB SSD + 1 TB HD (I think it is WD). The OS was Win8 which I upgraded to Win8.1 within days I received the laptop.Have 2 questions:Q1/  Can the hard drive swap out and replaced by a new drive? In other word, will the existence of the 24GB SSD posed a problem in this swapping?Q2/ The HD is 1TB. Googling the spec for U510, there is an old pdf from Lenovo saying this laptop support 500GB, 750GB to 1TB HD. If the original drive is the source of problem and I have to replace it, does anyone know whether I can replace the original 1TB drive with a 2TB drive?  Also, the original HD spins at 5400rpm, can U510 accepts HD with spinning speed of 7200rpm? Thanks in advance.Sorcerer

I'm trying to replace my DVD drive with an SSHD and can't get it to work. Are there any known limitations on what is supported? I already tried two different adapter cages to put an additional hard drive in the dvd slot. At first I tried a Seagate FireCuda 2TB which is not recognized most of the times. I got it to work one or twice but don't know how. It always was after I suspended and then resumed the laptop, never after a reboot. If I replace the stock SSD with the FireCuda the drive is recognized. But the SSD is not recognized when I connect it to the optical drive connector. I also tried to use an old WD Scorpio Blue 500GB HDD and it works when connected to the optical drive connector. Why is this so complicated? What can I do about it? I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. 22:50 $ dmesg | grep -i ata[ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000008d259000-0x000000008d2fefff] ACPI data[ 0.000000] NODE_DATA(0) allocated [mem 0x26eff6000-0x26effafff][ 0.000000] Memory: 7984780K/8302348K available (8452K kernel code, 1293K rwdata, 3976K rodata, 1484K init, 1316K bss, 317568K reserved, 0K cma-reserved)[ 0.156296] ACPI Exception: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20150930/psobject-227)[ 0.171072] _OSC request data:1 1f 0[ 0.193337] ACPI : EC: GPE = 0x50, I/O: command/status = 0x66, data = 0x62[ 0.193611] libata version 3.00 loaded.[ 0.827987] Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 14336k[ 0.881343] ahci 0000:00:17.0: AHCI 0001.0301 32 slots ... So, I do not know much about laptops or PCs, but I just recently purchased a 2TB hard drive for my PS4 to upgrade the memory from the old one. So now, I just have an old 500GB 2.5" hard drive laying around, and I am wondering if I can put it in my laptop, rather than just collecting dust. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,  I really hope someone can help me. I bought an Ideapad (300-15ISK - Machine Type 80Q7) about two weeks ago, and I just ran an LSC hardware scan. The laptop passed everything except the SMART drive self-test. I received a warning there and the result code: WHD01V000-UL7CLI I don't know if this makes a difference, but when I press the power button to switch the laptop on, it makes this little weird noise that sounds like a "spark"  or "static." The laptop is under a one-year warranty, so I'm sure I can get it replaced if this is a serious problem. Thanks for any and all advice!

I bought this laptop exactly a year ago and it's starting run quite slow (restart time is 2:30) which is pretty frustrating. It has 1TB HDD which is plenty of space. I have been thinking about replacing my optical drive (which I have never used) with a caddy and SSD to use as the boot drive. I am plan on using Samsung 850 EVO 250GB (SATA III). I have a few questions about the process. Is this storage compatible with the laptop? What SATA port does the optical bay have? (SATA II or SATA III)Would it be better for some reason to swap the HD with the SSD and use the HD with a caddy? Or any other compatibility issues anyone can point out? I just want to make sure I cover all my bases before I go out an buy the SSD and caddy.Caddy I am planing on using

I have seen that on older models with emmc drive, there was an available m.2 slot on the motherboard where you could put in an m.2 drive. Can you do that in the ideapad 120s? I have the 11 inch model with emmc drive soldered to the motherboard. Thank you.

Hi All, My hard drive has been damaged and I'm planning to take this opportunity to upgrade to an SSD. Admittedly I am rather inexperienced in computer parts and there is little information online per SSD drive compatibility besides ads promoting the sale of certain upgrade kits. Can you recommend a model of SSD that is compatible with the Lenovo Ideapad S400? I'd like a 240gb SSD drive. I've been looking at the SanDisk 240GB 520mbs SATA III SSD. I've also heard that some notebooks might need sizing brackets for their drive replacements, will I require one for the S400? Thanks for your help.
