I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

I have always depended on the key on the connector to hook up IDE (and SCSI) drives. I've done quite a few, and maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a problem that I know of. Aren't IDE and SCSI ribbon cables "straight-thru" ? Is there any wire cross-over ? What are the implications of having the stripe on the last pin on the board and the controller ? If this is just a "standard" - I surrender - but I'm curious about it from the hardware perspective.

Can anyone here tell me what stripe size i should use for my raid setup, i'm going for a raid 0, i'll be using it mostly for gaming. maybe...in the future for video recording. basicly i'm looking for speed n' proformance. intel has suggested using 16k to 128k for stripe sizing, but i think there more to that, thanks.

A:Stripe sizing?

HD performance; lots to be considered.

At the top, you want maximum cluster utilization with minimum last block free space.
In a Raid-0 configuration, read cluster == stripe size.

So, how do you set 'an appropriate stripe size'?

It goes like this. KNOW THY DATA!
you need to know, How Frequently Do I Access Each File? Fq
how big is each file? Fs
here's the hardest, is the file updated or totally replaced? UR
...{a save as without a name collision is a new file, }
...{whereas a name collision is a delete followed by a new file}
...{save is sometimes an update in place}

Performance tuning is always 'an exercise', so be patient with yourself.

To get the Weighted Average data Transfer,
.... Fq X Fs == Effect of Data Transfer
a small file updated daily: 1/day x 1024 x 365 days/year = 372,735/year
a smaller file updated hourly: 24/day x 512 x 365 days/year = 4,485,120/year
a large file updated weekley: 1/wk x 2048 x 52weeks = 106,496/year

add'em and divide by the number of files == WA
WA/365 will be the average I/O traffic per day (in bytes) == IOD

divide IOD by the average number of files / day == avg file size / day AFSD

divide AFSD by {powers of 2} x 1024
eg: 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k, .... 256k
this will be the effective I/O buffer count required to transfer the AFSD workload.
Keep the fractional part as large as possable, eg:
15.9 is a better number that 14.1 (large cluster loss).

Hello guys
Hope anyone can shed some light on this ?
situation is as follows :
original install was a winxp64 with another two disks striped for data.(onboard nforce raid)
stripe is still ok on this install.
same machine but with a fresh vista install (on another hdd) :
1 stripe disk (233Gb) is not found, however the stripe (466Gb) is recognized (see screenshot)
Booting the original xp64 disk gives me access again to the stripe, so I know it's ok.
The weird thing is it worked initially, after switching from dynamic to basic type.
I then created a backup of this drive which I now just now restored and : no more stripe.
I tried a fresh (32 and 64 bit) vista install but the problem remains.
All disks are sata
anyone any idea ?

Hi and thanks for the discussion of raid drives. Here is my problem... (I'm back but got a better handle on this). I have two drives configured 0 striped. I can see them in the raid bios information. The drives are fast and as I understand it, Dell configures these drives to split data - BUT, I have installed about 32 Gigs on the harddrive and
Vista is reporting double that.

I thought, at first, it was mirroring the drive, but according to Dell - raid 0 is not a mirror drive. Could it be just Vista? How can I tell for sure what I have here. Bugs the heck out me........Is there some utility anyone could recommend so that I could see what is on the drives? (added this note).....I just tested this and if I install a "program", it doubles the size as shown in the properties of the "c" drive. If I install a folder (say some large clipart), it counts it correctly. Go figure...

Thanks so much in advance.

Okay, I'm finally going to ask for help.Hi. I'd like to think I'm pretty decent and extracting viruses/trojans/spyware, but this one's got me. About a couple of months ago, I contracted the AntiVirus Vista bug and thought I put it to rest. It was tricky, but in the aftermath, I still seem to be stuck with a nagging hijacker. It will open a random browser window every few minutes, but that's abotu it. The only other thing is it won't let Windows update. I've hit the computer with updated Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and especially MalwareBytes numerous times to no avail. The most promising response was Trend Micro's Housecall which DID detect a JG trojan of some kind, but every time I "fixed" it, it came back! Is HouseCall just to show you what you have so you have to buy the software? Anyhow, I tried learning how to read Hijack This! logs, and went at it myself, but she's still hanging on. I'd really rather not have to make the jump to Windows 7 yet if I don't have to. Let me see if I can get my log posted here... any and all help appreciated immensely. I know when I'm licked. Hi all,

I have a stripe pair as my main storage and I've had problems with jerky avi playback since I built the machine. I'm not sure why it only seems to affect .avi's but whether the avi is part of a cutscene in a game or even playback of a downloaded file the result is the same - intermittant jerkyness (new word?).

I decided to take the issue a little more seriously now because it is a pain when playing a game. I've found that the problem seems to be the hard drive setup. If I take an avi and stick it on a usb stick, playback is fine.
Any tips on some tools to diagnose the problem a little further would be great if anyone knows of any.

alesya00 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about a vertical blue stripe on your display and wanted to help. It's highly unlikely that this is a driver issue, and much more likely that this is either a failing display, or a failing video chipset, or both -- and both of these last two are very expensive to fix, likely more than simply replacing the laptop. A way to see if it IS the video driver is to boot into safe mode -- in which case, the special video drivers would then NOT be working: Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 ForumsGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Hi, im going to be setting up a RAID 0 with two 120 GB Western Digital SATA hard drives with an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe mainboard. Here's what i plan on doing with my PC: play games mainly, browse the web, listen to mp3s, work with some programs (Paint Shop Pro, Word, a few others), and that basically sums it up. Im going to be using a Dual boot between Win98se and WinXP pro, I will be using WinXP pro a lot more though.

I've been doing research as to what stripe size i should use. Some say that 64k seems good for the average user while a lot of other places say 128k is better. Which one would you prefer for my situation?

Okay, I am going to create a RAID 0 Stripe set on my PC, using 2 40 GB hard drives. If this is successful and I feel its beneficial, I am going to move to a 4 disk array using another 2 disks. (All HDDs are identical size, model, make, etc....)

My motherboard is an IWILL KA-266 R with an integrated RAID controller, but if I get to like this I might invest in a more expensive PCI IDE RAID controller card.

My question, to all of those with a home RAID system, is this: What stripe size did you use?

Please bare in mind that the partition created from this array is going to be used for CD and DVD rips, DivX encoding, downloading large files to. Therefore, I am tempted to stray away from the suggested notion of pick the smallest stripe size possible because I will not have a lot of small files on the partition which will occupy this array.

The partition will likely contain a lot of Mp3s as well, but lets remember that the average mp3 is about 4 MB or so. Its nothing like the size of the smallest stripe size available, which is 64K.

I am not really sure what decision to make, and so am asking for advice here.

Its not often that I do that, so here is your opportunity to impress me.

Here is some extra information on the problem:

Ok, I don't have any experience with RAID arrays, but lack of experience hasn't stopped me for giving my .02$ before, so why start now

Given the information you gave us, bigger strip size is GoodTM

You actually gave the answer in the text from Anandtech:

Now let's move to the same array with a 1024KB stripe size. When writing a 4KB file, the RAID array in this case does essentially nothing. Since 4 is not divisible by 1024 in a whole number, the RAID controller just takes the 4KB file and passes it to one of the drives on the array. The data is not split, or striped, because of the large stripe size and therefore the performance in this instance should be identical to that of a single drive.

Reading back the file results in the same story. Since the data is only stored on one drive in our array, reading back the information from the array is just like reading back the 4KB file from a single disk.

The RAID 0 array with the 1024KB stripe size does be... Read more

Hello,

Strange issue with my computer, can only run it in safe-mode and it has pink lines down it, if I try to start it normally or repair the system; it restarts or says that it has not been successful. I've done some routing around online and it seems that these problems could be either the graphics card is failing or the power supply isn't getting enough power to the motherboard.
On start up all the bios crap at the beginning has gaps in it. Computer has been running fine until it started doing this yesterday when I turned it on.

My computer is an Advent, Processor Intel quad core Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32-bit Windows 7 OS. The graphics card is on board, dunno what it is apart from plastic and metal.

I pulled it appart earlier today and cleared the oversized, bloated dust mites out. It's about 4 years old. I'm going to try reinstalling windows but I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem from what I've read.

How can I find this out for definite without taking everything apart? Has anyone else heard of this problem. I'm very unwilling to part with my hard earned cash. I'm really stuck with this and would be very happy if I knew how to fix it.

Many thanks.

Can you try and upload a screen print so I can have a look. I will be able to determin if its hardware or software related bases on the image. If the image has a black strip on it then its software, which I do not have a clue how to fix. if it does not then its the hardware trying to display a screen resolution which is incompatiable with your monitor.

Have you got a widescreen monitor? if not try changing the screen resolution to either 800x600 or 1024x768. If this fixes your problem great, find a resolution that suits you. If not then check your screen is not widescreen.

I have had an intermittent problem over the last week or so. Every now and then, a darker grey vertical stripe appears on my screen. Normally, this covers the left quarter of my screen, but sometimes covers the whole left half of the screen. It's almost as if I have reduced the brightness of only this part of the screen compared with the rest.
It has again just appeared without warning. I attach a photo of it below. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but this stripe does not appear in the image if I take a screen grab.
I am based in Liberia and not near a Dell service agent, as far as I am aware, until returning to the UK for Christmas, so having it looked at by a Dell agent is not a practical proposition for the time being.
Any ideas on what causes this and how I can resolve it?

see what I am clicking on! Is there anyone here who can help or has had the same problem?
I don't have any problems with the Quick Time player That I initialize from the Start menu, nor do I have any problems with any other player or graphics.

The title kind of says it all. Out of the blue this afternoon a neon green stripe appeared right down the far left side of the computer screen and everything in it looks faded. I thought maybe restarting the computer might take care of it but it didn't and I noticed a bright pink stripe in the same area of the screen on the blue windows welcome screen. Looks like a spooky Halloween prank, but it isn't funny--it's irritating and worrisome. What can I do, if anything?

Last night when I was plugging in my ipod to my Toshiba Satellite laptop, a 1.5 inch or so verticle stripe appeared on my screen. Is this a portion of the LCD just getting old? Malfunctioning? Is it fixable?

The laptop is about 5 or 6 years old. Any ideas what may have caused this?

Thanks.

i'm in the middle of moving my 2 500 GB storage drives from my WinXP box to a Linux box (home server) and setting them up as RAID 0 (striping). As this new RAID setup will serve as the drive for storing and sharing/streaming mainly TV shows, video podcasts and music, what is the best stripe size to use?

also, do I have to worry about block size too?

TIA

P.S. - i'm using a 3ware PATA RAID card (7006-2)

Specs: Windows XP, P4, Dell poweredge 400sc (intel-made board, 875p, pc only 6 months old), two maxtor 120gb ultra series ATA/133s, raided together as one 240gb hd by using raid 0+2 striped, promise fasttrak100 made from regular ATA/100 controller card (by soldering 1 wire in and updating the bios(common procedure as seen on the internet), worked flawlessly for 4 years so far).

I came back to my computer seeing it booting up. After reaching the black Windows XP screen with the loading bar at the bottom, a blue screen with a bunch of alphanumeric strings flashes by then quickly restarts. It goes by too fast for the human eye even with careful watching.

After rebooting itself, it asks if I would like to go into safe mode. I tried all modes of booting, but the same thing happens.

I tried to reinstall windows, but after providing the promise fasttrak100 raid drivers to the setup, it recognizes the disk as a brand new partition with 100% space available. This is clearly not the case since it has Windows XP it is booting into. So I skip the reinstall, fearful of screwing up the partition or data.

I next install a fresh XP on a spare HD, switching the raid over to slave in an attempt to access the drive from an outside source. Once I get to the desktop, I attempt to access the raid drive, and it says (disk not available--continue, retry, cancel).

The data recovery programs I tried also tell me the disk is not available.

What is going on? There has to be some kind of data beca... Read more

I don't know if this is hardware or software related, so I kept it in this topic.

There is a constant horizontal stripe that takes up the second and third row of pixels from the bottom of my monitor. The color varies, but it seems to be some sort of an average color of the column above it. For example, if I move a black box around a white space (like in paint), I can see the stripe change to gray in the areas above which the box is (if that makes sense). If I widen the black box vertically, the color becomes darker.

The stripe does not show up on screenshot, so I took a picture with a camera to show it.

The stripe exists at all resolutions.

It is superimposed on everything -- including full screen applications and the taskbar.

It does not go away with a restart, sleep or hibernate, and I can't recall exactly when it showed up. I did recently install many Windows 7 updates, however, but no new video drivers.

Bob,
Have you contacted the maker of your monitor/ customer service and asked them if this problem has come up before.
They usually have a tech support on their homepage for issues like this.
I would start there first. IMHO

Hello All,
Please forgive me if this is an often discussed problem, I searched briefly, but didn't find answers.

I built my first system about 3 years ago from a new Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard with an AMD A64 X2 4400+ Athalon processor. I also installed 2 western Digital 250GB SATA hard drives. I configured the drives into a RAID 0Stripe array. I installed Windows XP Home Edition (currently upgraded to SP3), and the system worked pretty well with just few problems for a long time.

Last weekend I tried to start the system, bit it failed the POST. I decided to rebuild and upgrade the system. I bought and installed an Intel DG45ID motherboard and an Intel Q8200 Core 2 Quad processor along with 4GB of memory. After setting up some BIOS options on the new system, I entered the RAID set up utility, but before I completed the RAID Volume setup, the system warned me that completing the operation would erase all data on the existing drives, so I escaped before completing the task.

I would like to know if there is a way to get the new system to boot from my existing hard drives or if it is possible to back up and restore the data from my existing dives.

raid reconstructor

there is a bart pe disc with raid reconstructor built in. i have used it to recover a raid 0 array before.

i have the ISO but i am not sure how to upload the image. it is 153mb. the other tool you need is getdataback. you have to either purchase it or find other means to use getdataback. if you google "bart pe raid reconstructor" you will be able to find the info you need.

if you have any ideas for me to get you the bartpe image i made, let me know and i will try to help.

I was given a used h.p. 4210 printer, scan, copy machine. I used it for photo printing images from computer it works fine. When I copy or scan there is a black line down the scanned image or on the copy. It is about 1 inch wide and goes down the page from top to bottom. When I first turn the machine on it asks to allign the print cartridge. I print the test page fine but it asks to scan it but it will not accept . Any help is appreciated.

A:H.P. 4210 printer black stripe when scan or copy

Might try to scan with the M$ Scanner and Camera Wizard .. but sounds like the scanner is bad.
This'll work around most of the HP software.
Start ► Programs ► Accessories ▼ Camera and Scanner Wizard

I had one that did that .. exchanged it - and all was good again.

If it were me .. I'd remove HP's software .. go here ..

Get and install the Basic Driver for you OS ... #2 in the List ...
and try the Camera n Scanner wizard again.

I've got the latest Catalyst Drivers (13.4) from the AMD website, along with a Radeon HD 7950 from Sapphire.

As of right now, what happens is that if I launch into a game or anything graphically intensive, it will work initially. However, shortly thereafter, the screen starts to glitch/bug out, eventually crashing to either a screen with blue/brown vertical stripes, or a blank screen (that's been either brown or blue or white).

FurMark seems to bring it down fastest, and it seems to conk out @ ~52-54 degrees Celsius.

I'd like to have the OS on a Striped Raid Array, because I care very much for peak I/O performance.

The system does not have a hardware raid controller. I'm using IDE drives 3 x 80gb to be exact.

I know I can't install windows on a dynamic disk. Can we over-ride this and get it to work regarless?

If not i'd like to install windows 7 ultimate on the first 80gb drive. From there I'd copy the OS partition to the Dynamic array of (2) 80gb drives. So basically windows would boot from the boot partition on the first basic disk 80gb drive where it would only have the boot partition and a seperate backup partition. The boot mgr would then signal to boot to the dynamic volume so i can achieve faster I/O performance in windows.

Thanks

A:How to setup windows boot parition to load from dynamic stripe array?

If you want faster performance from your Win 7, get a SSD. A 120 GB can be had for under $100. This will improve your performance more than any one thing can. Your programs will open in one second and your PC will boot in 30 seconds. Check on Newegg, they had good deals.

If I have stripe or volume sets on one machine, lets say spaning 2 disk in either case. If I unplug the drives as a pair and put them in another XP/2000 box, will the OS automatically recognise them as the stripe or volume set pair? Likewise if I install XP/2000 on a box containing such a pair, will the OS detect the volume/stripe correctly during install?

I have a small network that I admin (3 desktops, 2 laptops). We have been having problems. Bear with me. I will start from the beginning of problems in case the origin of this sp2 glitch is other than on this desktop.

All systems are running Sygate personal firewall with identical permissions. Nod32, automatic updates run, weekly scans. Microsoft Anti-spyware on all systems. Spybot and/or Adaware run regularly on all systems.

Desktop #1 had a HDD crash. Replaced HDD. Reconfigured it to work on network. Installed XP SP1 then immediately updated to SP2. Reinstalled software, printers, set up sharing, etc. All seemed to work fine.

THEN...
We had a DLink VPN broadband router linked to a Linksys G-band wireless router from our DSL modem. We began losing internet connection which turned out to be the DLink failing. I have disconnected it (disabling our VPN, which was not needed at this time) and set everything up through the Linksys wireless router. Internet connection returned.

THEN...
Added new HP 6540 printer to Desktop #3, (running sp2) Set it to share over network.

Desktop #1 and #3 were communicating well with each other.

#2 and laptop #1 were communicating well with each other.

Laptop #1 needed sp2 to resolve some subspooler errors in network setup to make it communicate with D-tops #1, #3. sp2 install smooth and successful, no data loss, no reconfigurations necessary.

Created new workgroup and put all D-tops and laptops on that new workgroup. minimal network functi... Read more
