Unable to start MSE and Defender, unable to download

Q: Unable to start MSE and Defender, unable to download

Since yesterday it seems I have some mallware.
I have managed to run the Kaspersky TDSS Killer (advice from forums), found something, rebooted.
I have quickly installed AVG Internet Security (trial period) , Mallwarebytes AntiMalware Pro (trial period) .
Now I have scanned with all of these and again with TDSS Killer , and all of them report nothing.
But I am not able to download anything, all my downloads are deleted for virus reasons directly in the browser (IE9). I think that Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Defender are corrupted, because I cannot start any of them, but I think one of them is blocking my downloads. Also my Windows Action Center reports that "Potentially harmfull software detected, but the "Clean" button does nothing.
All of this is happening with AVG and Malwarebytes active.... and no reaction ... so.... need some help

Preferred Solution: Unable to start MSE and Defender, unable to download

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to start MSE and Defender, unable to download

After a lot of reading, I have managed to solve this with Hitman Pro and then RogueKiller.
The only thing that is not working is Windows Defender. I can click it in the Control Panel, the service is stopped, but when I hit "Start Now" to reactivate it I get "the specified service does not exist as an insltaled service (code 0x80070424).

I cannot seem to get windows defender started. To save time, I followed "Broni's" analysis and placed the result logs below. Can anyone translate the logs and let me know if I have a virus?

A:unable to Start Defender

Personally, I think Windows Defender is a waste of resources. I always disable it on all systems (by disabling the Windows Defender Service). Instead, just use a GOOD Anti Virus App supplemented by periodic scans with MalwareBytes. Most important, of course, is common sense (don't open unknown email attachments, don't download anything unless you are 100% certain it is safe, etc).

I've tried everything listed in the various help pages, still unsuccessful. No other antivirus programs installed. Ran SFC scan, no errors found. Finally got to the app screen (after services.msc > Automatic > Restart), clicked on Update Definitions, started to update then aborted with error ox80004004. Don't see any way to uninstall and reinstall since Defender does not appear in the Programs list. Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Windows Defender - unable to start

This doesn't answer your specific question or address your specific issue, but...

...Windows Defender (WD) under Win7 is just a weak anti-malware/anti-spyware application.
It is NOT an anti-virus (AV) application on that platform.
Even with WD running, you would still need a real-time AV, either free or paid.
And there are better choices for real-time anti-malware protection to help prevent infection alongside your AV.
So,by itself, I would not worry about WD's being broken.

Having said that, you said: "No other antivirus programs installed".
If, in fact, you've been running with only WD and without a bonafide, real-time AV, then it's possible (likely?) that you may be infected and the malware could be preventing you from turning on WD.

You may need to get some help running some scans to see what's lurking on the system.
Aside from WD being disabled, what other signs/symptoms/abnormal behavior are you experiencing to suggest possible infection?

The windows defender in my pc is disabled and isn't starting up. It just shows that the app is turned off and isnt monitoring your system. The windows security center is also disabled. I tried manually enabling it from the services app and it got enabled but it gets disabled after sometimes itself.

I have tried booting into safe mode to enable the defender but no luck. i alos dont have any other AV instaleed on my pc that might be clashing with my defender. I also did an integrity check using /sfc code in command prompt and it returned no errors.

This issue happens just recently ?
If yes, see if system restore will fix it.
Pick a date when WD was running ( or you did not have that warning ) as your restore point.

A little background first, I downloaded a file and started to install it when Defender caught the virus, but didn't contain it. So I downloaded Malwarebytes to scan and remove the virus.

After I loaded Malwarebytes I noticed I wasn't getting anymore Windows Defender definitions but I noticed the Windows Defender services were stopped and I figured Malwarebytes stopped it and that was the reason I wasn't getting anymore updates on Defender.

I uninstalled Malwarebytes but now I can't restart Windows Defender.

If I got to Control Panel then Security and Maintenance window. Both buttons to turn on Defender are grayed out.

If I search for Windows Defender in the search window on the task bar. This is the result I get.

And lastly, if I go into Task Manager Services, there are 2 entries for Windows Defender, both are stopped. If I try to restart them this is the message I get.

So is there anything I can do to restart the app or does it require more drastic steps such as reload 9926?

A:Unable to Re-Start Windows Defender Services

Head over to Services and make sure windows defender service is on. Not sure if the virus could have altered any settings in there, but worth a look.

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

So sometime I get this weird condition, where I am unable to open any programmes, even task manager will not open. When this happens, I am also unable to shutdown or restart the PC. The only way to solve this is to push the reset button and after the reboot windows runs normally again until the next time it happens. Does someone know what could be causing this? I attached the debug files and my system specs are current.

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

I've downloaded the latest installer from shadowdefender.com four times. Same result.

When opening the installer Windows says its publisher is unknown and downloaded from internet. After clicking yes, the extracting window opens but never extracts. Stays same way without any progress. And closing the extracting window does not work. The window just gets stuck. Have to restart every time.

What's wrong? How do I get Shadow Defender? I thought the latest version was good. I know my system is okay as I've installed DW yesterday and it's working fine.

Best Wishes,

Make sure your system has the requirements- http://www.shadowdefender.com/help.html

If your system does meet the requirements then something is interfering the the installation process. Try disabling and exiting all security products before running the installation.

Hello everyone,

I am a long-time lurker here but this is my first post here. I have an HP desktop and a Toshiba laptop, both updated to Windows 10 and would like to just use Defender as my primary AV. Both computers have Defender enabled, MBAM Premium and MBAE Premium, also running the free version of CryptoPrevent. Defender appears to be working OK but I want to set exclusions in it for my MBAM programs. The problem is all of the settings for extensions in Defender are all grayed out and I can not use them at all. I thought it was a real time conflict so I removed MBAM Premium and the exclusions problem still exists. Here is a screen shot of my Defender exclusion settings page. I appreciate any help or suggestions on this.

Did you check to make sure the Windows Defender service is running?Click on > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools and double-click on the Services option. When prompted by User Access Control, click the Continue button. If you are not prompted, you have either disabled UAC or are logged in with an account that does not have the ability to run with administrative privileges. In the Services applet, look at the Status and Startup Type entries next to the Defender service. When a service is running, it will be listed as Started in the status column. If the Status column next to a service is blank, that means the service is not running. If it is stopped, double-click on the Defender service to open the Properties page.In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Start" button. From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Automatic".Click "Apply", then "OK" and close any open windows. If the above does not resolve the problem, then check in services to see if the DCOM Server Process Launcher and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service are running and set to "Automatic". Windows Defender depends on both of these services so if they are not running, start each one in the same manner as you did for the Windows Defender service.

Windows Defender unable to turn On.
I recently had Avast antivirus installed, just for an additional scan. But removed it properly using Revo Uninstaller.
I ran Services.msc and found that Windows Defender is set to manual (but is unable to be set to automatic, location is greyed).
When I run Action Center, in order to Turn ON Windows Defender it simply opens Windows/System32.
Found the following while researching online,

I would like to install Microsoft's Windows Defender but I keep on getting an error message saying that I must be logged in as Administrator to do that.
Of course, I am 200% sure that I am logged in as Administrator... This is my computer and it boots up directly into Windows XP without going through the login screen anyhow!
I have installed many pieces of software before without ever running into this problem.
I've tried doing the installation in Safe Mode but no luck.
Any ideas?

Hi Ismail,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that the McAfee and ?Windows Defender? is not turning ON after updating McAfee Antivirus Software, I suggest you to try turning ON ?Windows Defender? using ?Windows Services?. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Please press ?Windows key + R? from keyboard.
Then type ?services.msc? without quotes in the ?Run? Window and press Enter Key.
Now search for ?Windows Defender Service?.
Double click on the service to open the settings, make ?Startup Type? to ?Automatic?.
Restart the computer and then check how it works.

Hope to hear back soon

just got lappy with win 7. Taking long time to warm to it but getting there. Need to install Kaspersky internet security 2010 3-user before i go internet with new machine.

reading the literature on this site and following it to the letter, i have been trying to disable windows defender but no joy.

1. msconfig - there is nothing at all under 'startup' but found it in 'services' tried to 'stop' but theres a note that says some important windows services cannot be disabled. what? that cant be right.
2. Opened defender panel and tried to go Tools , Options but i cant, no manipulation of any of the options is allowed from the defender menu, it seems to be waiting for me to download updates from the net. (No way jose until i got kaspersky on it!)
3. ctrl+alt+del, Task Manager, Services, found defender, right click to stop service and window pops up to say 'Operation cant be completed, access denied' . I am administrator as there is only one user.
4.am looking for this services.msc but i cant find it. what is it?

HELP! i have old xp machine for two more days and then no internet until i get kaspersky installed on new win 7 lappy but dont want to get started until Defender is kaput.

Last week my hard drive failed and I had to replace and re-install programs & find passwords etc. Now my problem is that I had already reinstalled bit defender & for several days it was ok. Then suddenly something completely stopped my antivirus and a message that nothing was in the file or something to that effect. I tried to uninstall it from the control panel and thought I had done so. I tried to reinstall from a CD. Now I can't get it off the computer and when I try I keep getting the message exception in unknown software exception (0xc0000417) occurred in the application at location Oxe56d167c.
I contacted their support people and they had me download the uninstaller from the website & run it. It would not remove it either. Now I can't put another antivirus on or put that one back on. Where do I go from here? Thanks for any help. I did download MBAM in safe mode and ran it. It found 43 PUP files of various types. IS there anything that can keep them off?
Thanks for any help.
I forgot to note that when the installation box comes up it is stuck on 50% installed & it won't go past that. I am running windows 7 sp1 64 bit.
