I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Western Digital WD My Passport 2 TB external hard drive
Western Digital's security software allows a password to be set on the external drive, encrypting it. When the drive is connected to a PC, a virtual CD (VCD) partition runs (via autorun) an unlocker utility WD Drive Unlock.exe, that allows password entry.
When I connect the locked drive to a Windows 7 PC (that does not have any WD software installed), the autoun popup appears and I select "Run WD Drive Unlock.exe". At that point, User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt appears, requiring Administrator
password in order to continue.
WD Drive Unlock then lets me enter password.
Because of UAC elevation, the unlocker can be used only by an Administrator user or by a standard user account who knows the Administrator password.

QUESTION
Is UAC elevation prompt truly necessary?
Is it appearing because Western Digital hasn't coded the unlocker exe correctly, or would any such utility require UAC elevation?

I'd like to find a way that a standard user account can run the unlocker to enter passsword and access the external drive, without having to know the Windows Admin password.

I have a Compaq Presario with WIn XP. I have Verizon DSL and MSN as the IP in a package deal. Recently, I got an update prompt to "make my MSN experience more useful"........it forced the download each time I tried to log into my regular Verizon/MSN page. When I allowed it to complete, thinking it was some new MSN update I had to have, it turns out ot be MSN 8, an old product, WHICH it could not even complete the install because it said I already had a later version????.
Now I have old MSN 8, lost my "http://verizon.my.msn.com' homepage to a blank white page, and, I can't access my MSN email.
Any clues? Thanks!

A:Verizon/MSN DSL

Get rid of that MSN s*h*i*t. It's less than worthless. Microsoft will take advantage of any and all opportunities to control you & your PC. Just go to the Add/Delete section of Contol Panel and say ?Adios!. Ignore any warnings that your life as you know it will end and just get rid of it. You can then set your home page to something less invasive like Yahoo or Google.

Help network guys and gals!! After installing SP2, verizon dsl no longer connects. Verizon uses PPPoE. DHCP appears to be enabled, but the machine is getting a 10.x IP address?! There's two icons in Network connections panel, one which says Broadband verizon dsl, and one that says Local Area Connection. This was not the case pre-sp2. according to IPCONFIG, the LAC is getting the 10.x IP, with DHCP enabled, but the verizon broadband says "DHCP enabled: No" What the hell is going on?!?! Any thoughts, help, suggestions, words of encouragement accepted!

Well, there are a couple of possibilities, I'd rate them in this order.

Issues with Verizon's lines and/or central office connection. (most likely)
Interior wiring or your filters are not properly installed.
The modem is bad.

Internet explorer is a program used to view web content, it does not grant you access to the internet. If you were to cancel your Verizon DSL subscription Internet Explorer would no longer do anything.

I am in the process of changing from Comcast Cable to Verizon DSL (at less than 1/3 the price). I found one glitch. I was not able to upload HTML files to a web server via any FTP programs. Durring one of the reconfigurations I wound up loosing my Internet connection and started from one computer conected directly to to the Westell 6100 DSL Modem, and found that I was able to upoload files. When I put the router (USR 5461) back in I was not able to.

After many many hours on telephone and chats and dozens of E-mails, I found a simple solution. The techs were all baffeled, but a geek at Geek Squad had a probable solution. Her solution seemed absurd but I was willing to try.

I pulled out my US Robotics 5461 router, and put in my dusty old Linksys BEFSR41 router. IT WORKED. Everything is now working.

For some reason (which is not clear) Verizon DSL tends to be happy with Linksys routers.

I hope this posting can save someone the time that I spent on the problem

So yesterday when i come home from school my dsl is down. I figured i would have to just reset the modem and router and it would be fine, which it was, until i realized i was only getting 10 KBit/s download speed. And then the dsl went out again. So i called Verizon and after talking to the guy for over 30 minutes and trying stupid things he tells me it is a problem with the line. Today the technician came to my house. He tells me that my Westell Model 2200 Modem is the number one problem. He said it's too old and i need to get a new one. He also tells me that i need to downgrade my speed? Im not positive but i believe i have 1Mb speed right now, atleast thats what im paying for... he says i need to downgrade to 768. So basically none of this makes sense to me. Because in the past i have had like 1000 KBit/s download speed before with the same setup. But right now after the tech came i am only getting like 580 Kbits download speed...

So why would i wanna downgrade my speed to lower then i have had before? He told me that it would work better if i did... that makes no sense. I want higher speeds...not lower
What are you guys getting out of this? And what would you do?
Thanks!

Please note if you are going to do this you must have installation cd or cab files.
1) Go to add and remove program
2) Clink on the windows setup tab
3) Take the check mark out of COMMUNICATION
4) Click apply
5) Wen asked to reboot say no.
6) Click Start
7) Click on Run
8) Type regedit
9) Follow the path HKEY LOCAL MACHINES
10) System
11) Current control set
12) Services
13) Winsock2
14) Right click
15) Select delete
16) Go back to add remove programs
17) Click on Windows setup
18) Put check back in COMMUNICATIONS

After rebooting, try to browse.
It may ask for your Windows 98 C.D.

I'm looking for folks that have actually installed Verizon FiOS service and can comment on how it went.

They "require" you to use their router, which kinda' makes me wonder. Is the configuration "locked down" so you can't access the configuration?

They state that you can have four wired connections and "many" wireless ones. Now, I'm not sure how they'd restrict you to four wired connections, but that goes with the question about the locked down configuration of the "mandatory" router.

I'm looking at the 15mbit/2mbit service, which would cost the same as my current Comcast 6000/384 service. When they say "up to 15mb", it makes me wonder what the real bandwidth will be on the service. I'd sure hate to swap and find out it's 2mbit!

I'm stunned at the complexity of the installation, they install a lot of equipment to make this happen, I'm also curious about reliability of the connections.

Hi All.

I just switched from dial up to Verizon DSL. I set up all equipment correctly, but for some reason I couldn't set up an account. It kept telling me a problem was detected. So, I called tech support. The tech walked me through setting up my account using his administrative stuff. No clue what he did. Anyway, so my account is set up. I decide I need to download yahoo or msn, which is free with the service. I really want this for the virus scan. It goes through the steps of downloading some files from Verizon, installs them then nothing. It takes me back to the same screen and says I need to download files (which I already did) I try this a few times and same thing. So I get annoyed and move on. Now I want to download their PC doctor. Again, goes through the steps of downloading, says it's installing then tells me I need to insall the files again. This happens again with the verizon toolbar. So, for some reason, I can't download from the verizon website. I can download from other sites no problem. I call tech support and he tells me something is blocking the download. We turn off virus scan, firewall, change security settings, do sharing. After an hour and a half, he tells me he can't find the problem. Anybody have a clue as to what else it could be? I am running XP with SP2. Thanks.

Not sure where to start.

I am in an area that our DSL connection is by what's called a remote terminal. I was the 2nd person in my section to get DSL. I was told they had to run a "loop." I've now since been told that may not be the right terminology. I was within feet of the min. distance from switching station.

First three months, I was getting the higher speed Verizon offers, with fantastic results. Then literally overnight it changed. All of a sudden, speed would drop to nothing, dropped connection and reconnenction on its own. This went on for another 3-6 months. Finally I was lowered to the lower speed which helped minimally. All during this time, new users (neighbors) are now getting DSL.

Three years laters I am still fighting this problem...I'm on the lower speed, speed continually drops, like every 5-10 mins. Download speed is almost a joke. 30 mins to download a 10mb file.

I'm at about 100 calls to technical service over three years, and at least 10 technicians out to the house. I have a direct run line from the box at my house straight to my DSL jack. So I don't have to have filters in the house.

I've had my actual telephone lines rebuilt at the switching station. I've had my DSL put into different slots. I'm on my third wireless router, now an Actiontec.

The results are the same ...consistent and always dropped connections, speed down to nothing and then it will come back up. It doesn't matter whether... Read more

I run a small mobile business. i pull a small trailer that i work out of. I use a laptop and verizon mobile internet. The modem they gave me is the UM-150, i believe.(looks like a small candy bar) It has a fold out male usb connector.
I have been through 2 of them already due to taking my laptop in and out of my truck. The male connector becomes loose and the soldered wires sever and its over. It is very cheap!! I have tried a wire extension, and used velcro to keep the modem on the back side of the screen. Opening and closing the laptop eventually wore out the connector once again. They only give you two replacements with the insurance @ $50 a pop. They will not let me trade for a pc card either.
Is there a way to create my own little mobile wireless network in my vehicle? I was thinking i could install a wireless router in the truck and leave the modem hooked up to it. This service requires you to connect through their software each time you surf the internet. I'm no IT guy, but that seems to be a problem. The guy at verizon didn't think it could be done. Any advice??

I took a deep breath, slept on it, and came up with the solution.

You have to bypass the Metro tiles. They are all cloud based.

Go into the desktop (lower left corner tile), fire up IE10 (smokin' fast by the way) and download MS Live Essentials.
From this install, you choose the Windows Live Mail that we are used to in W7. This can be setup with your mail provider.

I had Installed Verizons DSL software on 1 of my machines. Anyway I had noticed activity leading me to suspect a spyware/Trojan infection. I downloaded a copy of Spybot S&D, updated it and ran it. It would get just a short way thru the scan and abort. (Scan aborted by user) But I didnt abort it. This made me very suspicious. I opened the task manager and looked at the currently running Proceses. I noticed 3 that I had no knowledge of. MotiveBrowser.exe, VzOpenUIServer.exe, and MotiveSB.exe. I did a search and found a Motive directory in my program files directory. Next I shut down all 3 processes by right clicking and clicking End Process tree. That killed all 3 processes. I then tried running Spybot. No problems at this point.
Anyway I had traced all these programs to the Verizon Installation so I opened Control panel--> Add remove Programs and removed all of it. No more problems at this point. Spybot functions fine. I did a Hyjackthis scan and it looks clean.
I guess the point of this is to not install any software that you don't need. At the time I didn't realise, I didn't need it.

Full system scanning tools like Ad-aware, Spybot S&D and SpySweeper will remove the registry entries as well as the related files which results in a more complete removal process. I am running XP SP3. I use Thunderbird. My ISP is Verizon FIOS broad band. I have an email account at a university. I set up my email and everything worked well for over a year. For several months I have had some trouble sending to AOL email addresses. Yahoo also became a problem, but I don't think it was consistent. This past weekend I discovered that I could not send email, either directly or as a reply, to ANYONE.

I still can use the university's web mail access to my email and it works, both incoming and outgoing, but it is inconvenient and I like, and am used to, Thunderbird, and Thunderbird has more capabilities. I called the HELP desk at the university. They noted that on Thursday Verizon did something, somehow related to a SPAM protector, that is causing havoc. They tried to help by having me switch the outgoing server to Verizon, having me set up a Verizon Yahoo account to verify the outgoing server and we tried changing the PORT to 587 from the default 25. Nothing worked. They said call Verizon. Verizon was no help and in fact was upset that I use the university's email.

I have a friend who is having problems connecting to the internet, utilizing Verizon DSL.

At issue is connecting to the internet using a Westell 6100F modem/router. Connecting to Yahoo.com takes roughly 1.5 minutes or so. Connecting to the default verizon site took more than 3 minutes. Activating was a non-starter. The activation window got up to 5% complete and hung - as though it was waiting for a website to respond.

IPCONFIG /all indicates all the correct entries, including IP, subnet mask, DHCP and DNS (the last two are the same as the gateway IP address of 192.168.1.1.

I was able to access the modem/router webpage, and to see the external IP address. I was also able to manuever around in the webpage.

Discussion with Verizon Tech Spt lead her to believe that the modem/router is faulty.

There are 3 lights on the modem/router - Internet, Data and DSL. At start up, the internet light is red and the other two are off. Then the DSL light blinks and then becomes steady. The Data light then starts to blink - and then once the PC is booted, the internet light started blinking.

I cleaned up the PC, including cleaning up the registries, and still the results are the same - extremely slow.

I'm not sure that the modem/router is the issue. I'm afraid that the computer is too far from Verizon's Network equipment.

Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Note: You will need to post complete details of your configuration and your specific issue in this new thread for us to help you.

Thanks for your cooperation.

I am trying to optimize Verizon Fios on my Win 7 x64 system. When I go to their website and check my speed it tells me I am 'not optimized.' When I check 'Optimize' it starts then hangs up when it wants to install an Active X program for XP. No security bars or anything else pop up allowing me to change my settings. I did find another website that showed where the MTU setting which should be 1492 for FIOS. So, has anyone gotten their optimizer to work and IF so HOW? IF not when adding and MTU catagory should it be 32 or 64 (both options appears though I would have thought IF running x64 then only an x64 option would appear hence my asking for help..Thanks for any help..

Hi! I have a 5400 square foot home that is very long. I have verizon Fios coming into a demarc in the center of the house and am using their actiontec router with wireless. Connected to the router are 3 computers networked via Cat5e. My problem is that I am looking to extend the range of the wireless on the actiontec. I was thinking of using a Linksys WAP54GP (Wireless-G Access Point with Power Over Ethernet) to connect to one of the WIRED rooms at one end of the house, and another at the other end. My goal is to have the POE WAPs fill in the coverage and to provide some coverage outside by the pool as well. Does this sound like a logical solution? If need be, I can bypass the actiontec wireless capabilities and use it as a router only. Thoughts, suggestions?

A:Verizon FIOS and WAP

I use plain routers wired to the main box to do the same thing here. Here's how I connect them, any secondary routers you're using as AP's would be configured in the same manner. Obviously, if you need POE, you'll have to use something that supports that capability.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN por... Read more

Sorry I didn't know if I could post this in malware section-Forgive me if this is wrong. Malware gurus: Would it be helpful or hurt to try to get infected XP Windows machine online via help from Verizon-doing things in menus while waiting for help? I cannot post the GMER file from netbook says file was over 512 at around 782. I am currently on non-secured network with netbook. I posted what I could all but gmer.

I am waiting for verizon to send router/modem however i was able to get online just wireless would not set up but now cannot & driver loaded but says network card disconnected. I don't know if it would be helpful to try to get machine online with Verizon before help arrives.

Computer hell for 2 or 3 weeks...Also I was hoping to print out fed tax forms to do taxes/need schedule C etc-don't have print driver for netbook/don't know if I can use printer with this netbook which has Windows 7 starter gotta find out from HP or ASUS.

A:can't get online via Verizon DSL

You are good as is...I just checked and the DDS log is there.

So, my brother has a Verizon DSL connection at the office and his PC is directly connected to it. His Internet connection works fine. He got a Linksys router so he can share the Internet connection (and create a LAN, I guess) and couldn't get it working with his DSL modem.

I walked him through configuring the router to make a PPPoE connection with the DSL modem and that didn't work. I don't think he got the default gateway set or his DNS servers weren't setup (in the router) or maybe both. In any event, he couldn't access the Internet through the router.

I walked him through configuring the router to use DHCP and it got an IP address assigned but the default gateway didn't get set (was 0.0.0.0) and he couldn't access the Internet.

He connected his PC back to the DSL modem directly and the connection works.

Each time we switched connections from the PC to the router and the PC to the DSL modem, we powered off the DSL modem and the router to make sure there weren't any MAC address issues preventing the DSL modem from allowing the connection from the router.

Any ideas on what might be up? It looks like the DSL login info is programmed into the DSL modem, but the modem isn't doing a full DHCP configuration of the router when the router is connected. Strange.

Peace...

I just got Verizon DSL. Although I am satisfied with the increase in speed over my old dial-up I am a little unhappy with trying to get info from them in setting up the webpage that I had on my old ISP.
First I wrote a couple programs using PHP that don't work on DSL.
One was my Hit counter. They suggested using a CGI counter that they had on their site which I copied and could not get to work. I talked to several Chat tech's and they can't help or supply directions. I keep getting an error stating it can't find "counter2.exe' which must be on their system I did read somewhere that they don't recommend using Frontpage, which I am using. This may be the problem??
I'm hoping that someone has solved this problem, or can suggest where I might find a solution.
There are lots of free counters but I am afraid using these because I don't know what they may do in the way of Ad's.
If anyone knows of a good "free" hit counter or ways to get around the problem I am having with Verizon I would surely appreciate it.

The last time I spoke with Verizon was when DSL got set up. I have a Linux box routing and firewalling my internal network, but I couldn't get out on the net. I tried to tell them that it didn't matter which operating system and browser set up I was using; I could log into the modem and the modem itself wasn't getting online. The problem, it turned out, was that the wiring in the CO was backwards or something, but the response I got from Verizon's tech guy was:
"We do no support Leenoox. You must call Leenoox."
For future reference, if anyone has the number for Linux (maybe Linus himself) I'd like it.

Good luck with your counter issue; I understand how frustrating working with Verizon tech support can be.

i am having problems with syncing music using windows media player 11 to my razr phone. it wont even show up as there half the time and now the music feature on my phone wont even work. any ideas on what to do?

A:verizon sucks

put your memory card in a card reader and browse your memory card through My Computer. and simply copy and paste all the desired songs in the my_music (or whatever the default My Music folder is there) folder. Don't make subfolder inside that my_music folder, doing so will not show any songs in your phone.

We have a second home in NC with Verizon telephone service. I was going to get Verizon DSL service along with their internet telephone service VoiceWing and drop the local number for both NC and my Florida home (VoiceWing is like Vonage and you get unlimited local and long distance calling). When I first inquired, the Verizon rep told me I had to have a local connection to establish the DSL account but then I could drop it. When I called to set it up today another rep told me it was impossible to have a DSL connection without local account (the DSL won't work on it's own) and what I was trying to do could not be done. I don't fully understand how it all works, but do you think you can have a DSL account without a local number and then transfer my internet phone service to NC when I travel there?

A:Verizon DSL question

I believe you are looking for "dry loop" or "Naked DSL". This April 2005 news story said Verizon was expanding that service beyond the Northeast. Maybe they did not get to your locations yet.

you may need the modem drivers from the site

You have posted a couple of post

reformatting a PC will give problems with Graphics/video, modem, sound, network, etc if you dont have any drivers

I'm having a problem finding an easy email client. I was using Incredimail which handled Verizon with no problems but I found I could not send an attachment at all. I really liked Incredimail but there is no help. I switched to Thunderbird. Having all sorts of problems. I can receive mail but sending mail is said to be spam by Verizon who is my ISP. I don't like using the Verizon Web Mail on site. I also have OE which works ok but would prefer another client.
Can someone tell me how to set up Thunderbird to send mail and not have it picked up as spam. I have read some of the articles but they do not tell you how to. I have a verizon.net address.
Why is it Incredimail emails can go through but not Thunderbird emails?
Thank you for any help. Please, I'm a beginner.

Please bear with me, newbie here!

I use Firefox browser on my Dell laptop with Win XP SP3 and have Verizon/Yahoo DSL (the slower version).

A few days ago out of the blue I couldn't login to my regular email through desktop shortcut/sign-in box. Had to use webmail to get there.

Now, I can't get into my Verizon Webspace website, several of the help sections won't even load and, well, their support is non-existant.

I've tried upgraded to IE8 - which made things worse, so I uninstalled it. I updated Firefox, and just about every other program on my PC. Then I got mad and uninstalled most everything Verizon/Yahoo with the intentions of re-installing them - piece by piece.

Not sure if the problem is Firefox, Yahoo or Verizon....but pointing towards Verizon.

I downloaded RegCure but haven't paid for the "fixes" yet. Wanted to wait to see if that is in fact what I need.

Can anyone help?

A:Verizon/Yahoo DSL - UGH!

Not sure if this helps any....I'm using AVG as well, nothing has come up in scans other than tracking cookies. Downloaded it a couple weeks ago, since Verizon got rid of Norton.

I've run Crap Cleaner several times as well.

I can not connect with Verizon.net anymore. Verizon complains about the message length when I enter the User_Id and the password.
All other browsers work well so I have to say that recent changes in Firefox are the problem.
I am able to connect on an old computer that has an older version of Firefox.
