UNABLE TO OPEN PROGRAMS, SAVE FILES, EVEN RUN GMER!!!!

Q: UNABLE TO OPEN PROGRAMS, SAVE FILES, EVEN RUN GMER!!!!

Bit of a strange problem this..

When ever i try and open a program including paint, IE, firefox, AVG, malware bytes, even my music folder the "which user account do you want to use this program with RUN AS" window appears. If i then say click "current user" then press ok an error message appears.

this service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I cannot "save" screen shots as i get the "access denied" message and a

"the my documents folder could not be found. Right click the documents icon , click properties, and then check that the path to your target folder location is correct.

i also get this error message

c\:WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or becasue it has no enabled devices associated with it
------------------
I am UNABLE to run GMER though due to the ststem32dll error message as above.

I have managed to do a full virus scan using avg 2011, registry cleaner and spybot search and destroy.

Preferred Solution: UNABLE TO OPEN PROGRAMS, SAVE FILES, EVEN RUN GMER!!!!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Following instructions for virus/spyware removal and cannot get past GMER scan process. Each time I run the scan the computer locks up when attempting to save. I have tried it 5 times with no success. DDS.txt and Attach.txt files have been saved....no problem with this process. Scan process for GMER.exe. results in "not responding" message and entire screen locks up. Any suggestions?

Hi -

Post the logs from DDS.

Does gmer lock up if you try to save the initial scan?

Let's try this version of gmer. We're going to try running it in a different fashion, also.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable. Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double click the exe file.
The program will begin to run, and perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.
In any case, after the initial scan is complete, click on the Save button, and save the log file somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply

Normally I feel like I am able to ward off viruses on my own but this time I feel like I have encountered something much more serious than something I can take on alone, so any help would be much appreciated!

System:
Dell Studio 17
Windows 7 64bit (SP1) (problem is with Windows partition)
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Problem Summary:
-Had a virus popup telling me I had to pay X dollars. Immediately closed browser and restarted computer.
-Scanned with Malwarebytes. Results found 4 threats, all of which I selected to remove.
-Restarted computer, after which I am now unable to open virtually any programs or files. Behaves like an account permissions issue
-Tried a system restore in safe mode to the most recent time when everything was working, but this did not solve problem

Detailed Description:
The other day I got one of those popups telling me that "I had been accused of illegal browing activity" or something, which I had not been. It said that in order to avoid dealing with the law, I had to pay so much money. I restarted my computer and planned on removing the virus.

After restarting I was still able to open files and programs; in fact I was a little behind on my firewall updates (mistake, I know) so I decided to update that first. Updated, restarted, everything was fine.

Then I ran a Malwarebytes full scan which detected 4 threats. I don't remembrer the names, but two were registry problems, one... Read more

Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

My wife received a popup box warning about a problem with the hard drive. She called me over and we didn't click OK but the damage must have already been done.

All of the files appear to be gone. All of the program files and documents that should be in my documents appear empty. Thanksfully I could see GMER scanning all of these missing files so it looks like they are just hidden. I am not taking any action to recover these as I know how that can cause other virus issues so I am just waiting for help.

The computer seems to be working OK in that I have internet access and the programs that show up in the upper left of the start menu can be launched (IE, Outlook, and a Bridge Game that I play) but all of the other 'All Programs' appear empty.

Attached is are log files. I couldn't send to zip file due to computer issue so I am attaching the txt files.

Hello,

Can you please press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue. Type cmd and press enter. Go past the UAC prompt if necessary. Type sfc /scannow noting the space and let the scan run. It will take about 15 minutes. If integrity violations are found, parse and upload the log files. See the top yellow box here on how to parse the logs files: System Files - SFC Command and then upload/paste inline if you really cannot upload sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop.

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, so please forgive me if it's in the wrong place. I wasn't sure where else it fits.

Here's my issue, I've been having some major trouble with all of my programs. At first I thought it was just with my Adobe Creative suite, but then I noticed it was happening on my Office Suite. Then on firefox, IE, etc.

Every time I open up the window to save or open a file from a specific directory, the program crashes. Resetting my computer helps for a while but after a few hours, it goes back to crashing all my programs. I'm getting very desperate as I have some looming deadlines and this is really affecting my work.

I've tried 'refreshing' my system and it says my drive is locked...
I've tried restoring a backup but get an error...
I've tried formatting my system and it says a partition is missing...

Please let me know if you brilliant people need any other information.

A:All programs crash when trying to open or save

Could be a virus, but sometimes it might be the language that your system is in.

Some programs only work with english, so when saving to a directory the letters in a different language will show as "??????"

example C;\ Users\?????????\Downloads\
I've had problems where i couldn't install or save a game or file just because the name of a folder was in a seperate language than english.

This might be your problem, although I doubt it since you are from Ohio, and probably only use english.

- I have ran malwarebytes, awdcleaner, comboxfix, and tdsskiller.
- I have check settings in IE to make sure downloading was enabled
- all other browser work fine ... chrome, firefox
- I have taken IE off the machine by turning off IE in windows services via uninstall programs, rebooted and ran ccleaner, then re-enabled IE...still cannot download and save files
- I have rest IE...still same issue.

The only thing other thing I have found online regarding this is that IE may have lost it admin rights or something like that. have any of you ran across this issue before?

A:After virus removal IE not able to open save or open files from the web.

Hello lawrance,
Generally this is my full I.E. Reset directions >>
This should be done with Internet Explorer open (even if you are having problems with it), not Firefox / Chrome or another browser.

Click Tools or the Gear icon at the top of the browser > Go down the list to click on Internet Options > Go across to the last tab that should be Advanced >  Click on Advanced and then Reset (near the bottom) > You should get a Confirm box pop up > Tick Delete Personal Settings and now Reset.
This last part may be where the infection changed things -

While there > Go back to Connections Tab, and down to LAN Settings. Open this and check that the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings, and untick any others. Click OK >Apply if you changed anything and OK again.

Back to the General Tab and make sure your Home Page is entered correctly in the box. Re-set it if not, clock Apply and OK to close out
Once the settings have all been reset, Close that box. Close any other open boxes. Now close I.E. and Reboot your computer.

Let us know if this helped -

Hi all,
When wishing to save a file into a different format using WORD or IRFANVIEW or WAVELAB or all other programs the save as option list appears fleetingly then disappears. You can rarely fluke it and it works normally but mostly it's click on the drop down menu and it just disappears.
This only happened after using CC cleaner and malwarebytes to remove a bad virus infection.
Also if I happen to double-click while choosing a format (as the menu disappears) the computer goes into a strange feedback loop and becomes unusable till eventually it stops by itself.
Pretty weird huh?
Sure hope some brilliant person on here can help me!
Cheers!

Hi all, I'm new here and sure could use some help. Somehow I was infected with a nasty virus, but I think I managed to clean it up, or at least I think so. However, now I cannot do many things on my computer. I can't upload files to email, I can't change the wallpaper or screensaver on my computer, I can't open any .exe files, and most programs will not open.

I've tried many internet searches for these problems and tried to run various scans and registry fixes, but nothing seems to work. I'd really rather not use the repair install cd but I'm afraid I might have to.

So, it seems to me that files are corrupted and something is blocking me from using my computer. It is very frustrating and I could sure use your advice. Thank you.

I have a really "weird" problem going on in my computer and i currently use windows xp sp 3.

I start a program (let us say paint in this case).
i want to open a file, i press file - open - and then try to go to My documents for finding the file i want to use, the whole program stops responding and closes within some seconds.
This problem happens in all my programs where i want to save/open a file. I just cant go to other folders and save/open a file from there!
Once I got a error reporting box saying this:
"DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It started to be like this for some days ago, and i couldnt find a solution to it.
Cant remember that i downloaded something that can cause it all.

Thanks for all answers!

Hi,

I have a problem with the "Always ask before opening this type of file" function in Internet Explorer 11 and Windows 8.1.
The problem is; when the Citrix receiver from Windows store is configured to open ICA files and we log into a webinterface or storefront server in IE, users  is prompted to either Open, Save or Cancel the ica file. I am not able to uncheck
the "Always ask before opening this type of file" after downloading the file. I can do thios on other file types like 7z Files. For me it seems like Windows have a whitelist of safe files, and .ica is not one of them.

Is there a way to be able to have .ica files to open auto, without the plugin in IE?

Hello, first thing, I am extremely new to this. This is my first time consulting personal online help.

I was hit by a string of fake security/anti-virus scams, or "scareware". Among them were "Desktop Security 2010" and "Program Compability Assistant". There was one more before Desktop Security 2010, but I forget the name and can't find it in my search history either, but I believe Malwarebytes took care of that and Desktop Security 2010.
Program Compability Assistant on the other hand, is still around, but not to a full extent which I will explain later. This thing disallows me to open any video files, claiming that I'm missing codecs and directs me to a presumed fake scam website.
Program Compability Assistant, note the spelling error, I discovered to be a recently new scareware as my searches for it on google kept insisting I had a spelling error of the legit program Program Compatibility Assistant and the ppl experiencing the same thing all posted about it in May. I've been continuously updating Malwarebytes, hoping to take care of it, but to no avail.
I then foolishly followed a guide for another person dealing w/ Program Compability Assistant (I regret this so much. I was unaware of the dangers of following someone else's problems and guides as outlined in this forum). hxxp://www.nucia.eu/forum/showthread.php?t=57431
I translated it and followed it and now, although I do not get a pop-up of Program Compability Assistant, there are st... Read more

Hi,

The save as/open dialogue box is not opening in any of the programs on my laptop. I use a Asus PEM 1015 with a Intel Atom N550 processor and Windows 7 starter edition.

The save as/open dialog box does not open in any of the programs including all office products, chrome, firefox, paint etc. The program crashes when I try to save as/open any file.

I am not really very good at technical things, so don't know how to put up an error report detailing what the problem is.

However, I searched the forums and found this solution to my problems,

It worked, but only for a day. The problem is back, and now repeating the above steps also do not help.

(I have also tried an SFC/Scannow. But it always stops at 21%.)

Please advice.

Thanks a lot.

When I receive an e-mail with any attachments I cannot open, print or save them. When I highlight the attachment and double click nothing happens. Right click, choose open - nothing happens. Choose "save as", box opens to save the document into a folder of your choice with the "Save as type" showing Attachment(*.*). Press "save", an error message of "The command failed to execute" pops up. Choose print nothing happens.
I am unable to view any attachments on online e-mail.
I have also found that if I try to download documents or programmes from web sites, it seems to go through all the correct processes but doent appear in the folder I asked it to save in and I cannot find it on the computer anywhere.

This has been ongoing for a while but dont know exactly when, as I dont get many attachments.
Updates switched off
I run AVG - recently unloaded and reloaded/updated.
IE 8

Dual core
Use BT Infinity - recently rebooted.
Have run AVG, Malwarebytes in safe mode, CC cleaner. Tried the solutions on microsoft site.
I have been working on this for a couple of days to no avail.
Has anybody had the same problem?

Hi,

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. I have a new Dell laptop and I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email. I had the same setup on my last Dell laptop and didn't have this issue.

The issue:
I receive .tif ftp links in my email (essentially faxes from our server that I need to view). I use to be able to open or save once I clicked on the link. Usually, I would just open. However now, open isn't an option at all and save only works if I have deleted the .tif file type from my computer (open my computer, click on tools and then folder options, click on file types tab - then remove .tif and .tiff). Once I save a file and then open it from my desktop, the .tif file type is put back into my computer folder options and I have to go through the above process all over again to view another one. If I don't remove the .tif file types then as soon as I click on the .tif link it automatically saves in some temporary file that I have yet been able to find. I've searched for the document name and nothing ever comes up.

What do I need to do in order to be able to open the .tif links immediately without going through the process above?

Your suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
My husband's computer which gets scanned for viruses every day, all of sudden cannot open or save any file. The first error message states that the file is in use by another user (this is an unnetworked laptop). When we click on Notify, it says the file cannot be found or server unavailable. This happens for every Word, Excel,... file that we have tried. I have tried to check for microsoft updates but even the temp directory cannot be written (says that it is read-only) to so I cannot install anything.

Would really appreciate some help.
Thanks
Kristine

A:Cannot open or save any files

Spyware is a larger threat than virus's these days. Does his checker also check for spyware? Running a software firewall?

Is your husbands account a power users or administrator? You can check this with the user console in control panel.

If you logon as him and go to My Documents, right mouse click in the right pane and choose "New" then select new microsoft word doc. Can you save it?

Question is, this a rights issue, a change in a local policy, a hacked computer, malware/spyware/virus infection or a problem with the hardware/drive.

Starting about half an hour after I turn on my computer, attempting to save a file in a program such as Paint, Microsoft Word, etc. causes the program to stop responding. It also happens with similar functions, such as using the DCC Command in mIRC. Both Norton Antivirus and Spybot get nothing. I can provide a Hijack This log if needed. Note that I have fixed this before by deleting a strange file labelled "i" that was in my System32 folder, but it has reappeared and simply comes back every time I delete it. Other strange things in my System32 folder are files called "eraseme_XXXXXX" with XXXXXX replaced by seemingly random numbers. Thank you in advance.

A:Unable to save files on my desktop

See the suggestion below......it worked for me.

I figured out the solution to this problem in Windows 7. I assume this will work with other OS too.

1. Right-click on the drive that is causing the problem.

2. Left-click on Properties.

3. Click on the Security tab.

4. In the first window click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).

5. Just below the window click on Edit.

6. Click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators) again.

7. Here's the key to making it work. If Apply is grayed-out, check a box in the Deny column. It will then bring up Apply.

8. Check a box in the Allow column. It should check all of the boxes except the last one and uncheck all of the boxes in the Deny column.

9. Click Apply. It should run a scan of the files in the drive. When the scan is finished, click Ok. The first box should still be open.

10. In the first window, click on Users (your computer name-PC\Users) and repeat steps 5-9, of course clicking on Users (your computer name-PC\Users)
instead of Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).

NOTE: You may not have to click in the Deny column after the first scan is completed for step 10 as indicated in step 7.

Hi, I just tried downloading an exe file to the "Program Files" folder & was not able to in Win 8.1 pro. I get the attached message. I believe I was able to save files in this folder in win 7. I am the admin. Any clue why this happens? Thanks!

A:Unable to save in Program Files

Hello Zilla,

Even in Windows 7 you are not allowed to save directly to a system folder location from an external source (ex: internet, USB).

Instead, you must save to one of your user folders (ex: Desktop, Downloads...), then you (if administrator) will be able to copy/move the file into a system folder and approve to do so.

This is done for security purposes to prevent external sources from having access to system files and folders.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

It's likely the game you downloaded was infected with malware. Try using system restore to take your system back to a time before you downloaded the game. Here are some instructions- Using Windows 7 or Vista System Restore - How-To Geek Note: You may have to enter safe mode for this to work in your case. Pressing F8 during boot up will bring you the menu where you can enter safe mode.

I have recently noticed (I know it didn't used to be this way) in any of my programs, when I click on File>Open or try to save into a list of folders, they are not in alphabetical order. I have to search through the entire list of folders to find the one I am looking for. There is usually a semblance of order in that some seem to be in order, but many are not and this usually seems to be the ones I am looking for. Is there a setting that might have been changed to cause this?

I need to open these files. I have Word Perfect 10, and Office Access, but I still have been able to open these files previously.

Hello Pixie7

Try this easier way first

Right click a problem file
Hover over Open with
If the program you need is not shown click "Choose Program"
Highlight the program in the list
At the bottom check "Always use this program...."
OK

If the program to open the file is not in the list, click the "Browse" button.
Find the ".exe" for the program and select it
Continue then as above.
