Q: Help please with making file write protected and read only.

Hi everyone.
Hope I'm posting in the proper area.

So what I need is to write protect a file on my laptop, so it is not overwritten.

I'm not sure if I just right click it and make sure the file inside the folder is at "read only" does the job.
I need to update my files but don't want this one replaced.
I see the box under "general" tab has to be clicked until the check mark is on.

And ...please help me understand this part, if I do the above, does it matter if I'm logged in as a a "standard user" or admin.

I understands the permission of the admin has full control so just wandering if using "admin" to login it overrides the "standard user" settings when making changes or update to files...the read only still works ?

Thanks so much.

Preferred Solution: Help please with making file write protected and read only.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Help please with making file write protected and read only.

You could convert the document to Adobe pdf format. (keeping the original read/write document separately, in a secure location). Just about everybody has Acrobat Reader installed on their computers these days.

I have 4gb pendrive it is infected with some virus which is making it write protected & unable to use it.I am unable to format it so far i have to tried different things:
1.Tried formatting it on linux.
2.Tried different tools like neo9,hddformatter,jetflash,hpusbtool & a few more.
3.There is another way of changing registry values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro\StorageDevicePolicies but i am unable to find that registry key (using win7 64bit ultimate).
4.Tried antivirus it detects the threat but unable to clear it out.
5.Tried cmd & then a variety of methods to format/partition but no use.
6.Also tried computer management with same message "the drive is write protected".

Now i have run out of options but i am amazed how none of the above methods have worked, already spent 2 hours searching for a solution but unable to find one.
Please someone help me i want my pen drive back.

A:Virus on pen drive making it write protected

A bit difficult for me to fathom this being a virus issue if even formatting it in linux isn't possible. Are you sure it's not as simple as a lock switch toggled on?

I am trying to put songs onto my mobile pone card, it has one of those micro SD adapters that you put the card into with the lock switch on the side.

When i plug it into the card reading slot and try to put songs onto it is says: This card is write protected. Before I put the card in is switch the lock to the forward position, unlocked. but it seems putting the card in atomatically flicks the switch to lock.....Am I missing something?

A:Card read, disk, 'write protected'

I'm pretty sure that the card reader is not flicking the switch. I just put the card out of my camera into my cardreader and it tells me the same thing with the switch in either position. I could read and write on this card before installing Vista and can still read and write on it when it is in the camera. But Vista keeps telling me the card is locked with no write permission. I guess this must be a setting I have not found yet

I use Windows Vista, and I have two external harddrives (1 is a Western Digital 160gb portable HDD, the other is a 500gb Seagate Barracuda in USB enclosure). Well, my friend was hoping that I would share my downloaded media with her (mostly anime, movies and music) that I archive on both HDDs. So she plans to bring her laptop (whose operating system I no nothing about, though I'd bet my arm that its Win XP or Vista) while I bring my HDDs, and we share like monkeys and bananas. However, she's not really that tech-savvy, and she herself admits that she probably has enough viruses, spyware, adware, trojans... (ie. malware) to start her own zoo. I really don't want to risk my archive HDDs, and even if no data corruptions takes place, doing a complete scan my HDDs afterwards with my PC would take a while and would be a pain.

So my question is as thus: Is there a way to lock my HDDs (they're NTFS) so that even if plug them into her disease-ridden notebook and copy my files from me to her, there will be no data traffic from her pc to my drives? Basically making the entire Drives Super Read-Only?

Third party utilities are ok. Thanks.

I recently started getting the following error message when trying to save to my Floppy 3.5" - "Cannot save file. The location is you are trying to save to is write protected." this occurs from any program. But this does not occur ALL the time, sometimes it does allow me to save to it. And it ALWAYS allows me to read & open from it. I'm wondering if there is a way to lock the Floppy Drive?? Because the message isn't that the "Disk is write protected." it's that "The LOCATION is write protected." Is this possible?? How do I clean the drive??

I'm running WIN98 on a PII 450Mhz PC.
I can still FORMAT floppy's in the drive.
I checked the Device Manager & supposedly the Drive is working properly. I ran SCANDISK & found no errors; I DEFRAG once a week, with no problems.

I would go ahead and have norton quarentine the file. It would be much safer than trying to delete it yourself. I belive that once you quarentine the virus there is an option to delete the quarentine file.

Since this is actually about a virus and how to get rid of it, I'm going to request a moderator move this to the security forum. They should be able to provide you with possibly a better answer than what I can.

Hi to all

I was wondering if anybody can supply me with a solution to this. I have had this problem for a while now when I try to delete large video files, the files still show up in the recycle bin even after I have tried to shred them using Mcafee shredder. I then do a manual deletion with the files that remain in the recycle bin and they disappear but the system hasn't really deleted the files, I know this because I then click empty the recycle bin and the error message "Cannot delete file DC Access denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use" appears. The DC usually has a number With it like DC1 or DC10 sometimes I get DE.

I am getting the occasional error message when I try to move files from one drive to another or delete folders it usually tells me to makesure the files are not being used by another program or they are write protected. I have to reboot before I can get rid off unwanted large or medium size video files. When I cut certain files and paste them into another drive the file doesn't move into the other drive it just copies into it and again I have to reboot for it to disappear or to delete it from the original drive. It is a real pain in the rear!

I have been in touch with Mcafee and Dell about this and no solution has been put forward . Dell want me to cross their palms with cash and Mcafee checked all their software to makesure their Security Center wasn't the blame. So some know... Read more

Hey, I tried searching the forums but couldn't find any posts that have my exact issue. Basically, I have a disk with a file on that I require and when I try and copy it onto my new computer it says that it is write protected. The odd this is that I have copied the same file onto my laptop and it works perfectly fine. I have also tested the same file on my dad's Vista laptop and yet again it works perfectly fine. I just wondered if anyone could offer any solutions to why this is happening on only one computer?

Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Write protected file oddity

This could be a driver issue or just a computer fault.
I assume you're computer is clean.
Please run a hijackthis log as here
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html
Please DO NOT reply here but in the main forum found on this site's homepage.
When did this become a problem (when was it first noticed?)
Were able to copy before?
Did you install or upgrade any new software or updates?
I commend you on trying this on other computers.
That means that it's the computer's problem and not the CD's or the file is not correct.
Hope this helped and hope this gets solved.

Several months ago, I accidently dragged and dropped my PSP file into another folder. I went to windows explorer to drag it back out. Some of the files were fine but others were not. I could not view the contents of the files. So I turned on my external hard drive that I use strictly for a back up in case something happened.....I copied the file back on to my computer. Now, there are many files/folders that I cannot open and I cannot delete them. I get an error message saying the file may be write protected, in use or the disk may be full.
I right clicked on the file>properties and uncheck read only file. Still I can't access those folders at all and I can't get rid of them. Can you suggest something else I can do to either view the contents or delete the folders from my hard drive.

Hello all. I'm trying to write a request to COM2 and capture the answer. My device is 19200 baud 8/1 non parity.

Using a freeware terminal called termite I can send the hex instruction and receive the answer, as verified in HHD serial monitor.

My batch file looks like this:

Code:
MODE COM2: baud=19200 parity=N data=8 stop=1 to=off
TYPE request.txt>COM2
COPY COM2 text.txt
where request.txt contains my request.

HHD sees the request being written, but the device does not respond.

Any ideas please?

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

Hi everybody

I need help for reading data from text files and saving it under different columns in the excel file using vba macro.

For example: I have many text files in the following format

File 1:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

File 2:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

In excel file the above files should be saved one below the other seperated by the name of the text file, in seperate coumns as found in the text file.

I found an example online but it saves the data under a single column only. I tried changing it to my requirement, but I couldn't. I have attached the example that I found online.

Thanks

My head has been spinning all day yesterday. Never have I had anything happen like this before. On my laptop, out of no where, my files became stuck on read-only. From program files to blank text documents, everything is write-protected. I figured my hard drive might be failing so I backed up files to another computer. Now that computer has everything as read-only! On both computers, it takes Windows Explorer 3 seconds or more to open a folder. Both computers are real slow, and I can't do anything from installing a program to deleting a empty folder! It's almost like a medical condition that spreads when copying a file from one computer to next! I believe my files are almost permently virus seeds! Afraid to do anything else after bricking two computers running Windows 7 Ultimate. First computer is an Asus Laptop (X55U). The second computer is an HP Compaq desktop (RE471AA).
Update: Avast is detecting malware. I will update this thread as both computers are running boot-time
scans.

Update 2: Avast had detected something on my backup folder on the desktop which is C:\Users\public\Rhettster. Check the image for more information.

Update 3: Avast finished on the desktop. Read-only problems still persist. I'm not sure what to do. Windows had just given me the biggest hint to what this problem is from. If you look at the pop up in the image, Windows is telling me I do not have permission from the system. I believe that the permissions are corrupted badly. Not sure how I could... Read more

My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.

A:[email protected] and disk is write-protected error

You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I am posting the solution to a problem to which I saw there is no solution on the web despite many have been looking ofr it.
I experienced this problem with ALL pcs (windows XP) to which I connected the Canon lide200 scanner.
After installation, testing it, it gives consistently the following error:
Cannot write or read file. - Code : 2,252,0
and because of it stops the scanning.
The following fixed the problem on all computers:
Activate the utility "MP navigator EX"
On the left-top click on Scan/Import
Click on "specify" (i.e. the settting for scan import) and change them to 75dpi and uncheck everything (I only needed to uncheck the "unsharp mask").
Test it now and it will work.
After that wills start working even restoring the settings.
Good luck.

I have a Gateway Computer running Windows 98. MY problem concerns a Philips 3610 Read/Write - Write CD. It has always been a problem i.e. - balky. I am using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.5 software. I can burn a CD but it is only readable on the Philips. I can't get it to initialize on the other CD drive on the computer or on the drive in my wife's Compaq laptop. I had to transfer a 5MEG file to her computer and finally had to install an old Zip Drive to do it. Sometimes (sometimes not) I get an error message after the CD is burned, but it reads OK in the parent drive.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Also, went to Philips website to try to find new drivers - It's lousy!

A:Philips 3610 Read/Write - Write CD

I trust you have the updates from Adaptec/Roxio.

Try the Sony CD Extreme software: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dlag...m/dsonyweb/cdrw/SonyCDExtreme1.3.390Setup.exe It should work fine with your burner. If you just select “data” in the opening wizard it will record session at once, close the session so it can be read and leave the disc open so you can add more stuff. Very robust software – make sure you don’t use a formatted CD. If that still doesn’t work I suggest trying some different blank media.

If you are recording to a formatted CD then you are packet writing and it can’t be read on any other computer until you install the reader for it from http://www.roxio.com

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

insert it, and right click the Properties of the optical drive, and see if it is write protected.

I have a Samsung SPH-a920 cell phone. I am trying to load songs, and some are loading and can be played and some can not, I get the write protected message. I have a Sandisk card with the phone. The switch on the card is off, I checked that first, and even switched it once just in case it was wrong. Could someone please help, as I am getting extremely frustrated!!!!

I am trying to transfer my tracks from my music folder to mp3 player, but comes up cannot copy track as destination is write protected turn off write protected or use another disc. what do I do

A:write protected

Most Mp3 players have a 'lock' or 'hold' switch on the body somewhere to protect it's contents. If this is on then that can stop you adding to the player further.

I tried to save some photos onto new CDs and DVDs both RW from folder in My Documents and sending to C drive.
I get the message that these are write protected. Meaning the formatting is missing? No message to say so.
Can anyone resolve this please?

A:Write Protected New Cd-rw & Dvd-rw?

What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.

Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.

Hi, I'm new to the Windows Vista world. My old computer (XP) crashed and Vista is what was available.

I can't seem to restore any of my data for my accounting programs with Vista. Usually the error message is that the disk is write protected!! My hard drive?? I am trying to restore data from a CD to my C drive. Another message I receive is that the disk is full. I still have 74Gs of memory left. Is this Vista or McAfee? Any help would be appreciated.

Joyce

A:Write Protected?

How are you attempting to restore the data? What accounting program are you using (and is it Vista compatible?)?

Hi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.

I have contacted the seller with this problem and they offered me the refund or replace, even assured me that the item will go to the manufacturer.
However, I guess that there are phishers outside j... Read more

Hi,

If I understand you, you wish to remove all the photo's/data on this stick prior to returning it to the seller. Is that correct?

Hello,

A while back I changed the properties of all my picturess to READ ONLY. Then my computer crashed and someone else reinstalled my windows XP. When windows was reinstalled, the compuer was given a new name and my user name changed as well. Now I cannot access the pictures at all. I tried changing the pictures' properties, but I get an acess denied message. Any suggestions?

I think you probably just need to take back ownership of the folder/files. Microsoft has an article on how to do that at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421.

Hello rscadden!

This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.

1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.

Good luck!
