Open URLs typed in address bar in current active tab, not new tab

Q: Open URLs typed in address bar in current active tab, not new tab

Hi, I have a stupid question.

Up until now I've never used IE so I don't know the various ends and outs. One thing that is driving me up the wall is when I type a URL in the address bar, rather than opening up the URL in the currently active tab, IE opens the URL in a new tab. After entering a few URLs in the address bar, I am suddenly overwhelmed with tabs.

How can I configure IE to open URLs entered in the address bar in the currently active tab?

Preferred Solution: Open URLs typed in address bar in current active tab, not new tab

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Open URLs typed in address bar in current active tab, not new tab

The only way it can be done in IE is using the process.start command (VB). Other browsers make it simple.

Would anyone know how to configure Firefox 3 so that it only shows the URLs I manually typed in when I view the Address bar drop-down menu?

I wish Firefox 3 were more like Firefox 2 in this respect. This is the one feature of FF3 that I really hate. The drop down menu just seems to show a random collection of websites from my Bookmarks. Not sure how this is supposed to be better than FF2. Thanks.

Hi, everyone! I am a newbie to this site...one of the issues with being a newbie is that there are so many posts to go thru to see if your question has already been asked. I have made an attempt and could not find my question. If it is a repeat, I appologize in advance.

My address bar in IE drops down as I type with previously typed URLs plus many URLs that I haven't typed (but have visited), as well as some things on my desk top or favorites, and stuff I don't recognize. I have tried "typed URLs" in the registry, tried everything under Tools/Internet options, tried "URLBoss"...nothing seems to help at all.

Any help from you folks would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying you want to clear that dropdown list? If so just go to tools>options and click clear history.

I know how to delete typed URLs in IE by using RegEdit.
Now the start menu has it's own set of typed URLs in it's Address toolbar how can I edit or delete those?

A:Typed URLs

Use CCleaner, it will clear all of your internet caches and then some. Also has a nice reg cleaner built in.

I just upgraded my browser from IE 6 to IE 8, I never used IE 7. My O/S is Windows XP SP2. I just upgraded to Firefox 1.0 PR a few days ago. When I type a URL into the location bar, some of these URLs will delete on their own after a couple of days. I also experienced this problem when I used Firebird 0.7. I never used 0.8 or 0.9 so I don't know if this occurs with those releases.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? Is there a tweak or fix for this issue?

A:Firefox 1.0 PR - Typed URLs Will Self Delete!!!

Click on "Tools" then choose "options." In that menu, choose "History." There you will see an option for how long Firefox will "remember" your URL history for you. You can change that to however long you want.

I noticed yesterday when I go online using IE8 (XP Pro, Service Pack 3), my homepage (google) won't open because it is being redirected to a non-existent g.msn.com/... blah..google.com .. blah.. page. Note the google URL is imbedded in the "path". All my Favorites and any typed URLs do the same (the same, meaning the desired URL is within the longer g.msn.com address). Yet if I click on my wife's XP username, her IE homepage/favorites/URLs all work fine, which is how I am writing this message (and from where I ran the reports below). Hello -

I have noticed a problem in my Internet Explorer history. There are websites appearing in there as being recently viewed when I haven't looked at them in months. The sites are two astronomy sites:

I haven't visited these since August and yet am finding them listed as being visited yesterday, last week, etc. I also have noticed incorrect number of visits on the properties of some of the sites in my history, and even sites not appearing in there that I definitely visit every day. Has anyone heard of a virus, spyware, or adware doing this?

It isn't even so much that I am concerned about fixing this problem. But it is driving me crazy not being able to find out what is causing it. If anyone has experienced anything at all like this, I would so appreciate hearing about it.

When I open IE 6 it goes to my home page (Yahoo) and I can check my mail etc. I can go to any link on my home page, but when I type a new address in the address field, IE closes with a problem,,,how can I correct this? I am using Windows XP Home and I am taking care of virus, firewall, and spyware protection. Please tell me where to start looking to resolve this problem. Many thanks!

A:Cannot go to a typed address without an errror message (RESOLVED)

First Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

I just got my mother a new computer for Christmas.
It is a Dell Dimension 1100 that came loaded with XP Home.
Any idea why these problems may be happening?
I read that it may have something to do with some sort of Ad Blocker.
But I have no idea what that is.

When she goes to Barnes and Noble's website, it automatically sends her to the Search Page.

When she goes to the message board on the ABC website, none of the pictures will display and she gets a message that says,

"This page was generated because of one of these two reasons:

- The web address you typed did not resolve correctly.
- You typed a keyword query in the browser address bar.

This page is meant to provide you with helpful related content, including web search results and paid advertisements, based on the meaning of the web address/keyword query that you typed. This program can be uninstalled from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Look for the application named "Browser Address Error Redirector". Older versions may be called "GoogleAFE".

I have Windows XP Pro, sp3.

In Firefox 2 you could go to Tools>Options>Privacy and press the Clear Now button. That brought up a box with a bunch of check boxes in it that allowed you to select what is cleared. In that box with the check boxes in it there was also a button that says: Clear Private Data Now. When you pushed that button it cleared stuff, one thing of which was any of the URLs in the dropdown list of the address bar.

But now with Firefox 3 it doesn't clear what's in the address bar dropdown list. Can somebody please tell me how I can clear this?

I'm still on Vista Home Premium, but I don't think it makes a difference to this problem.

I have extended, by editing about.config to show 100 urls, in the address list.

But many of them are outdated, the site no longer exists, or the link was mistyped and leads no where. The ones I started going to recently, are nowhere to be seen in the list.

I did look on Mozilla's web site and they mention a places.sqfile that can be edited, but it isn't on my computer.

How can I fix this ?

Close outlook express, then do this:

Click on start, then run, and type this: regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Then press ok or enter, click ok on the box that comes up.

Then re-open outlook express and try again...

I'm pretty sure this problem can be solved by registering a specific DLL and that might be the one... if not let me know and when i'm at work tomorrow i'll find the exact one but i'm off to bed now...

Anyway if that doesn't work, you can always just manually copy and paste the URL into the address bar of your browser...

Then when I click on the URL it will open up the website. Somehow, I just lost that capability. How do I get it back.

A:How do I click on a URL I typed in Wordpad and get it to open site.

Welcome to Seven Forums sydney14. I can open wordpad and type an address that then becomes a hyperlink as you mentioned. Saving it saves as a Word document for me however as I have Office installed. When you type the address, do you include the http:// part as well? Does the link appear blue as if it should be clickable? If you press the Ctrl button, then click does it open then? If you have a restore point from just before the problem started, that may be the easiest fix.

When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

I have been using Chrome as my exclusive browsers for a while now, it is synced with my gmail account for two computers (work and home). When I was at work, I used to need to use 'https' to access most websites. Now, I no longer have that work computer. The problem is that all URLs are opening using 'https' instead of 'http' which is greatly affecting the usability. If I go into the URL, remove the 's' and reload, the page reloads with 'https.'

All of this was happening in Chrome, so I assumed it was a Chrome issue for me, most likely stemming from syncing with multiple computers. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled, no dice. Same problem. I downloaded Firefox in the meantime, which is now also doing the same thing. Cannot think of why Firefox would have adopted this as well, when I installed I did NOT allow it to copy bookmarks etc from other browsers. Have I somehow made this a default in the computer and/or browsers? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

In chrome, click on Tools, then select extensions. You don't have an extension called HTTPS Everywhere installed do you?

Hello there, It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. Click OKWhen VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.Once the scan is complete,Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more filesCopy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxesC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nnnllig.dllC:\WINDOWS\system32\gillnnn.*Click Add Files and Click Close WindowClick the Remove Vundo button. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YESOnce you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.Turn your computer back on.Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.David

I recently added a Mozilla browser to my Win XP desktop, decided I didn't like it, and removed it. I went back to using the Internet Explorer browser. I use MS Outlook. Before I installed and then removed Mozilla, it used to be I could click on a URL link in any Outlook email, and the IE browser would automatically open it up. Now, it doesn't -- If I have a URL link mentioned in an email, I have to copy and paste it directly into the browser. If I just click on it in the email, it doesn't do anything.

How can I make it go back to opening up directly when I click on it in my email?

I already tried running the regsvr32 *.dll commands mentioned in another post on this forum, but it hasn't worked.

Any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

How can I add my Spectrum e-mail to another e-mail account so I can view and delete old e-mails? A Microsoft tech said that I would have to purchase a Microsoft license to gain access. Is that true? How will the second e-mail recognize and accept my Spectrum user name and password ? Would I use webmail ?

Thank you for your time.

A:Adding current e-mail address to another account

I don't understand exactly you are wanting to do or why. Please explain.

The simplest way to view and delete Spectrum email is to simply login using their webmail.

I have been rendered completely dumbfounded by a very recently encountered problem.

I was on facebook earlier tonight when I was told about a terrible film called Birdemic. My friend linked the wikipedia page through a comment. When I clicked it (It was definitely a link to wikipedia), I came across a "Server not found" page and upon closer inspection, instead of saying "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdemic:_Shock_and_Terror" it brought me to "http://en.facebook.com/wiki/Birdemic:_Shock_and_Terror", which obviously doesn't exist. I tried going through a google search, which will do the same thing, and through the integrated search engine in Firefox, and everytime it would redirect me to the nonexistent en.facebook.com. Curiously, the Welcome page for wikipedia works, as does the mobile site (by changing it to en.m.wikipedia.org). I tried going to different wikipedia entries as well, but its the same problem. Every time I try to correct it in the URL bar, it will just change back.

If this is a virus, it is the most ridiculously trivial and mundane virus I have ever had, however it would also be the most confusing to me.

If it is not a virus, I have no idea what it could be. I have cleared my history, web cache, cookies, everything. In addition to Firefox, I also tried it in IE, to identical results. AVG scan is currently underway, 82%, no threats found.

Any ideas?

EDIT: For further clarification, this does not happen when I try it wit... Read more
