Cannot open File Explorer, crashes explorer.exe

Q: Cannot open File Explorer, crashes explorer.exe

I cannot click on Windows File Explorer in my task bar or start menu. No error, just a spinning circle and then my icons disappear and come back immediately.

Windows key + E does nothing. Literally, nothing.

If I use other programs to view file in original location, I can sometimes get it open. I can also get it open if I type c: in the search box. However, if I use these methods and dare to right-click, it immediately crashes.

Google search gives me other people posting this issue, with no real fix.

Preferred Solution: Cannot open File Explorer, crashes explorer.exe

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So whenever I click File Explorer on the taskbar or in the start menu, Windows Explorer crashes and I need to go into task manager and restart it. But if I click a folder on my desktop it doesn't crash?

All of a sudden I can't open my file explorer. The window pops up for a second then it crashes. Otherwise the PC is working fine as far as I can tell... except I can't get system restore to complete with an unspecified error. I have tried 3 different restore points, no joy. I restarted in safe mode and the issue goes away, file explorer works fine. Any ideas?

Hello everyone.

I have been unable to view the properties of certain files. Whenever I select the file, right-click, and select Properties, Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. The same thing happens when I try to select Properties through the Organize menu dropdown.

I found a couple of relevant threads in this forum, but they don't seem to have been resolved:

Right Click Properties Crash

My issue is more similar to the first thread. It is only files, not folders or drives. And it is only certain types of files; the affected file types seem to be video files in general, while all other file types seem OK, although mp3 files seem to be a mixture of both (some works and some fails).

Anyway, I have tried all 4 methods provided by Sir George in the first thread. My graphic drivers are up to date, the sfc/scan came up clean (screenshot 1), the Microsoft Safety Scanner came up clean (screenshot 2), and the problem persisted after booting in safe mode, as well as after a clean boot.

I have even scanned and fixed the registry using AVG PC TuneUp, turned off the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature, and scanned the hard drives for errors. There were no errors found from scanning the hard drives, and the problem remained.

Can anyone please provide me with further advice or instructions? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling AVG?
What is the file association of video files (avi mpg mp4 etc.)

Mine is set for

Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

A friend of mine bought a laptop with Vista Home Premium from Bestbuy (cry). It's a decent laptop, however it's been ridden with problems since she started using it.

==What I've done, may or may not be pertinent==
I had a chance to look into it today and fix most of her problems, it had no viruses but it was very poorly configured. I brought it up to date with MS Updates, installed and ran NOD32/Ad-Aware, restored IE7 to itr's default levels then tweaked it so we could actually download files from the internet. Set her up with Firefox. Uninstalled her non-working MS Office 2007 Student edition (no serial) and installed Open Office.

==The current problem==
The whole point of the above was so that she could get into hotmail, download some XLS files, edit them, and send them back. About 70-80% of the time, when she opens her inbox by either browsing to it in Firefox or IE7, once she logs in, explorer.exe will crash and the page will not display. When she does get in, she can download the files, but she cannot upload anything because she gets the same explorer.exe crash, 100% of the time. This happens with any file on any hotmail account we've logged into. It doesn't give a cause or error.

Gmail works fine, so she's using that in the mean time. Google didn't lead to anything useful so far. Can you please give any advise?

I was attacked by spyware a few days ago, and ever since whenever I try to open My Computer, My Documents, or any other Explorer Window, explorer.exe crashes once this rundll32.exe process starts. If I stop the rundll32 process and restart explorer, it comes up again until I try opening a window. but now I have come to overwrite the discs to put something new on them, afterall they are rewritable discs. I open "computer" and look at cd drive (e) and it doesn't find the cd. then I rightclick the e drive icon and the blue circle icon spins round for a while then windows explorer crashes and have to ctrl-alt-del to get it up and running again. It only affects the windows explorer, everything else runs as normal.
It happens on all 3 discs I burnt and now want to overwrite. Am I being silly and missing something obvious or is it a fault in Vista

Seems to be a problem with IObit uninstaller shell extension.

Unable to load image C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit Uninstaller\UninstallExplorer32.dll
You won't get many recommendations for IObit products here. Personally I do use IObit Uninstaller sometimes but it's blocked from dialling home by my firewall and the shell extension has been removed. The problem is that I removed it so long ago that I don't remember exactly how I removed it.

If you've got Ccleaner installed have a look at startup entries and disable or delete any IObit entries.

The problem is with the extension, not Explorer. I would check for an update or a newer version. Perhaps you didn't install required codecs.

A:Explorer.exe crashes then lose ability to open anything

Most likely a bad 3rd party shell extension that was only installed in your profile.
To check this, use this free tool: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

Selective disable the 3rd party (non-Microsoft) extensions to determine which one is causing the crashes.
Once you find out which one it is - re-enable it and then uninstall that program from your system.

Also, please provide this info so we can see if we can figure it out from the Event Viewer reports (even though you're not experiencing BSODs): http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

So i have been fighting this issue for days and i am at my wits end. I have bitdefender total security as my antivirus but i also run malwarebytes anti-malware and super anti-spyware. To attempt to fix this issue i have also run windows defender (found and fixed one issue but not the one causing the crash), the root-kit finder from malwarebytes (no issues), spyBHOremover (3 found no malicious), the command prompt windows integrity scan (i forget the command just now but i ran that too with no issues found). I've used file assassin to delete anything that would even have a remote chance of being corrupt and causing issues. I have defragmented my computer, done registry scans/fix, but every time the result is the same. i checked the windows forum where there was a similar complaint and an admin there told the person to reset their IE as it is apparently closely linked to windows explorer. I updated and reset my IE as well but still have the same issue. I feel like i am going to lose my mind if cant get this to stop. I also noticed (which prompted the mass virus hunt) sluggish start-up and my bitdefender options kept changing on their own and the auto-update and auto scan kept turning off. Having done a repair install on my bitdefender and fixed a few other minor issues I've managed to get bitdefender to behave more normally and my start-up is faster, but my downloads folder is stubborn. Hi all,

So my computer is almost unuseable right now.

However other program open, included Google chrome, malwarebytes, etc. Ccleaner doeas have an error, it restarts but then works normally.

I was thinking windows could be corrupted. I wanted to do a repair install, but since explorer.exe doesnt function, the autoplay feature never loads either. I have a bootable USB drive with windows 7. I dont know how to get to the set up file without opening a folder.

I am having problems with Windows Explorer crashing whenever I attempt to modify (create or delete) a folder. I can create and delete folders through an MSDOS window but Explorer crashes when I try through it's interface or through an application's interface (ie File, Open, Create Folder icon). When attempted through and application, there is no warning message; the application just disappears. In explorer the "Explorer.exe has generated errors ..." message shows.

I lost my W2K cds during a move so a repair is not possible. I am up to date on all SP, AV, etc. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

I tried to open a video file saved to my desk top but got a data entry protection (DEP) warning that made it close. This happens with every video folder on my computer. I am able to open VLC and load the videos from there, but not the actual video folder so that I can burn them. I logged off and restarted in safe mode. While in safe mode I ran Spybot S&D, AdAware, and CWshredder. All three programs removed items. I then rebooted in normal mode and I am still getting the same problem I have a hijackthis log.

I deleted the HJT log after surfing the web somemore. All my problems started after I installed the k-lite codec pack. I have now uninstalled the program, but still have the problem. I reinstalled the program and still have a problem. How do I clean up k-lite? What is a better solution?

This is the first issue i have had with windows 10 ever since installing it in august. Ever since yesterday whenever i click on a file in the file explorer window it will gray out and stop working. Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.

So recently I've been suffering some Windows Explorer crashes.

Whenever I cut/copy/paste files into a new folder on the desktop, it crashes, likewise creating a new folder on the desktop. It's been bugging the hell outta me, as I usually create folders on the desktop for temp reasons (happens to be one of them).

So anyway, thinking I pull out Event Viewer...

i have not found any solution for this even though there seem to be several similar postings before, so here goes. All this happens on Win2k before and after installing SP4.

Whenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though. Couldnt find where to manipulate registry. Any input on this one very welcome.

Btw, i can right click on folders. Just not on files. wierd, isnt it? 8^)

Hello everyone!

I'm loving the new Windows 10! But this problem is really bugging me.

Whenever I right-click a file anywhere on the Desktop, the File Explorer crashes briefly and then comes right back up. This does not happen anywhere else, only on the Desktop.

I tried going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers" with RegEdit and removing some of them, but to no avail.

Anything to point me in the right direction or any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

This is a new re-install of Windows 7, with the only notable software being Office 2003 and Access 95 (upgraded to Access 97).

When I try to edit an HTML signature in Outlook I get an error that there is no editor available, so I was advised to set the filetype for .htm files to Microsoft Word (not just using the option in IE). I was following these instructions:

Outlook 2003 on Windows7, Signature ERROR message: couldn't find editor for H(.) files

However, when I click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program", explorer crashes and restarts (see attached screenshot).

How can I fix this?

Many thanks,

I have a Dell D830 running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. This PC was running Vista and Windows 7 was installed as an upgrade in December.

I was suspicious about some search results not turning up documents that should be indexed and when I try and look at the indexing options/advanced/file types the index application crashes. The same thing happens when I try and look at default settings/file types.

So far I have performed a registry clean using Advanced Uninstaller Pro, performed a Windows repair, installed SP1, and turned off all non-Microsoft third party extensions. I just performed a full virus scan with Symantic using the most recent virus file definitions. It did find trogen.gen2, which was removed. I ran two spyware applications (malwarebytes and Superantispyware) and found no issues. I ran the SFC /scannow utility, which found no issues. I tried to set the default program to internet explorer as well as the Windows Search Explorer. I booted in safemode and default programs utility does not work at all. I created a new user and the new user has the same problem. I removed all items from the index locations and file types still crashes the index options utility.

It looks like a security access error but I am running as administrator. Could this be a registry issue?

I have attached both error messages and a mini dump file.

Hi all, whenever I try to perform any file operations (delete, cut or paste) Windows Explorer hangs for a couple of seconds, then crashes to desktop without displaying an error. This occurs with files on any drive, including network ones. I'm able to download files without issue, I just can't move or delete them. I can install and uninstall applications fine. I don't know exactly when this began, but I do have a file in the recycle bin (can't empty that either) from 23/02 so deleting must have been working at some point.

I've not had any look finding a solution on Google so I'm hoping somebody here can help diagnose and avoid having to reinstall everything. The Event Log contains the following indicating something called CHARTV.DLL is responsible, but I've not been able to find anything online specific to errors with Explorer caused by this.
