Dell 660s Won't Boot, Hard Drive Locked, How Do I Unlock

Q: Dell 660s Won't Boot, Hard Drive Locked, How Do I Unlock

After the power strip was turned off by my 5 year old granddaughter my computer won't boot. It tries to repair itself but fails. I have tried tapping F12 to get to the boot menu but everything I have tried has failed. I don't have a recovery disk. Lesson learned there. I had the computer diagnose the startup and it found no problems.

I have tried to reset it but I get a message that says, "A required drive partition is missing."

If I try to refresh it says, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

It has a Seagate hard drive #ST500DM002.

Can anybody tell me how to unlock the drive or anything else that would help? My computer skills are very limited.

Thanks, Danny

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ask Dell. They'll check if you're the owner then help you. Probably a password thing.

Just want to start off with saying I have read another similar post on this site which can be found here: [SOLVED] Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

It was promising as the poster was having the exact same errors as me fro the people recommending fixes as me but in the end it turned out he jut had a faulty piece of software. This is what I have done so fa an had no luck with.

I was running windows 10 but im currently running it from a USB stick.

So I was able to stick a memory stick in my PC hoping to reinstall windows on my second hard dive, but I noticed that my first hard drive wasn't dead after all as it wasn't letting me re format hard drive #2 for what ever reasons so I started browsing the tools.

I have gone through countless forums and tried all of this:

A lot of the forums recommended doing these commands, I got to the last one and it always said this:

I also tried resetting my PC. When I choose to reset my PC but keep the files it says

And with deletng the files

Ive also tried running chkdsk C: /f /r /x and the result was

Though I was able to browse through all the folders on my disk

The latest downloaded thing on the machine was a game, otherwise nothing before that.

Massive thanks in advance,

My hard drive crashed and I am attempting to replace it with an identical drive. I put the recovery cd's in the optical drive and I get 'no boot device available' I attached another dvd with a usb cable and it still can't find it. If I take the disk and the drive and attach it to my laptop it boots (so drive and disk is good.) I suspect something in memory? If I let it attempt to boot a few times it eventually takes me to the 'your PC needs to be repaired' The Boot Configuration Data is missing file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot|BCD Error Code 0xc0000185. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

A:Dell 660s can't see optical drive after HD replaced

When you try to boot the optical drive, are you pressing F12 at power on which gives you the boot menu, so you can select the CD/DVD drive?

If its not detected with F12, double check the cabling for the optical drive. A connector may have been inadvertently disconnected while replacing the hard drive.

Hello to one and all.

I have an issue that I am in need of help with. A few months ago I posted a plea for help with a Dell Inspirion 8100 laptop that I have. A so called former friend locked up the laptop with administrator password and disabled the ability to boot the laptop via boot disk, CD USB, or anything else etc. I sent a request of help to a gentleman by the call of Rustam and a few weeks ago he provided a master password to clear the dell grey screen asking for the password. I was very grateful for the gesture of help. I managed to bypass the screen only to get another gray screen telling me that the hard drive has been encrypted with another password. I have tried to send an S.O.S to Rustam but he has not answered for one reason or another. My question is as follow does anyone know of a way without having to shell out any money be able to unlock the hard drive so I can retrieve the data that I need as I don't have a backup of it. Any ideas on how or where to look for futher info would be really appreciated.

A:i need help unlocking a hard drive locked with a passord from a Dell Inspirion 8100

the only way i could think of would be to use the drive as a slave in another system with it's own operating system. this may allow you to simply view and access all of your data as a second drive.

if you can't simply access it through windows, then you may need to use a recovery program to access it.

I bought a new Samsung SSD with self-encrypting capabilities. In the HP Bios/settings, I had the possibility to put a "drive lock" on the disk (I think it's OPAL). I installed an OS, worked for a couple of weeks, everything went fine. During startup, I always had to enter a password to unlock the drive, which is exactly what I wanted. Today, I booted the notebook again, this time I maybe mistyped the password two times, now the drive is locked. I do have the correct password here, but I can't find an option within the BIOS to unlock the drive. No matter where I click within the BIOS, it always tell's me "Drive is Locked". Now, how can I *unlock* the drive when I have the correct password?I tried:  * Security -> DriveLock -> "Set DriveLock Password" -> Error: Drive is Locked  * Security -> DriveLock -> disable "DriveLock password on restart" -> has no effect Help

Long story short my sister gave me an Inspiron 660s that she received as a gift a few years ago (fully legit).  She said it wasn't working anymore and I could have it.  I suspected a failed hard drive and after several diagnostic tests later it was confirmed the the original WD Blue had crashed; full failure. Now here is where I need advice:
1. When she received it it did not come with a physical Windows 8.0 OS disk.  It was pre-installed and then later upgrading via her work's IT department  to 8.1.
2. I cannot access the Windows code as it is in the BIOS.
3. I have a working laptop hard drive with Windows 7 installed and tried hooking it up to see if it would take realizing that this was a long shot at best.  As you probably concluded it wasn't recognized.
4. I was thinking of wiping one of my hard drives and doing a clean install of Windows 10.
Question: With a new hard drive (or possibly an SSD) would #4 work or would I still have issues with the BIOS and embedded Windows product code?
Question: What would you suggest that I should try?  It is a Nice small system and everything is clean and stable.  I have someone who is in need of a system but cannot afford one and I thought I would give her something that would meet her needs.

A:Inspiron 660s: Hard Drive Failure. Need Advice Please.

re: 4. I was thinking of wiping one of my hard drives and doing a clean install of Windows 10.
Yes, this should work, but for this you will need to buy either a OEM copy of W-10, that has it's own product key.
The free upgrade version of W-10, from either Windows 8, 8.1, 7 ended on July 26.

Hi all,

My laptop suddenly turned off because the battery was drained and I didn't have the power hooked up. Upon restarting windows, I got this message

so I clicked on the troubleshoot option and selected "Automatic repair" and then got this message

I went back to the main screen and just shut my laptop down again, only to be met with the same "trouble shooting" screen. I then tried to do the "disc image" option and got this message

since that didn't work, I decided to try the "refresh your pc" (save all files) option

and got this error message

How can I get my laptop working again? I downloaded the upgrade to windows 8 online so I don't have a disc. I can't clean install it, I have a 10 page paper I've been working on for two weeks, that needs to be turned in tomorrow. I can't lose that paper! Please tell me there is hope??

I had an 80GB Seagate IDE hard drive in my Dell Dimension 2400 that was clearly dying. I have been using a boot CD to connect to the Internet for days now. I have replaced the old hard drive with an unused 250GB WD IDE drive and with difficulty gotten the computer to recognize it. I intended to boot to flash drive and use the boot CD to execute the transfer of an image of the old Seagate drive from its location on my external hard drive to the new internal hard drive. But the computer will only boot to flash drive when the new internal hard drive is removed. When the drive is in and I click Enter on "6. USB Flash Drive", I get the ""Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" message over and over.

When I take the hard drive out, I can boot into flash drive again. I have A05 BIOS, and it appears to me from the Dell website that is as far as I can go.

How can I start booting into flash drive with my new hard drive in place, just as I did with my old hard drive in place?

I have just tried to Refresh my Windows 8.1 installation, but when running the refresh Windows 8.1 came up with an error I have not seen before, let alone do the refresh.

It displayed a message saying "The Drive is Locked, you will have to unlock the drive to continue" so HOW do you unlock a Hard Drive please ?

Hope someone knows how to do this before I either pull my hair out, or start from scratch and re-format the drive and do a complete new install of Windows 8.1

One thing I have done about a week ago which may be causing this problem is I converted the Drive from MBR to GPT and if this has locked the drive, I am still in the position of not knowing how to fix the problem.

Thanks in advance

A:How to unlock Hard Drive

If you still had the disk set with MBR its a simple fix, not sure how to fix it with GPT

To Fix a a corrupt MBR (Master Boot Record) or corrupt BCD (Boot Configuration Data) follow these steps to repair your PC.
To fix this problem, follow these steps:
1) Insert your Windows installation CD and boot the computer using the CD.
2) As the computer boots, you need to navigate through these prompts to get to the Command Prompt:
- First it asks what language and keyboard you use on the Windows Setup screen. Click the Next button.
- Then on the next screen click the link on the bottom that says "Repair your computer"
- Then on the Choose an option screen, click the Troubleshoot link.
- Then on the Troubleshoot screen, click the Advanced options link.
- Then on the Advanced options screen, click the Command Prompt link.
3) Enter these commands at the command prompt:
- Type: bootrec /fixmbr and press the Enter key
- Type: bootrec /fixboot and press the Enter key
- Type: bootrec /RebuildBcd and press the Enter key
- Then it will ask Yes or No, type: Y
4) After typing the command above, the problem should be fixed. You can follow these steps to restart your computer:
- If you are still in the command prompt type: exit and press the Enter key
- You may want to remove the Windows CD from your computer before restarting.
- Then on the Choose an option screen click the Continue link.
Your computer should now restart normally.

A:my dell 15r 5520 cannot boot,,hard-drive not installed

Hello Nezz282,
There are few steps I would suggest, which would help us in isolating the cause of failure. Please check in BIOS setup if the hard drive is detected. To enter BIOS setup, restart the computer and keep tapping F2 key at the Dell logo screen. The system would enter the BIOS setup. Check if the hard drive is detected. If not, I would suggest re-seating the hard drive. Please see the Owner's Manual in order to re-seat the hard drive. Once re-seated, restart the computer and check if the hard drive is detected in BIOS.  If yes, check if the system boots to windows. Please try the steps and write back with results.

I just made a mistake and put a locking type SATA cable in my computer and now cannot get it out. The idea is good but the design leaves a lot to be desired. I am afraid of damaging the motherboard by just pulling this thing out of the socket.

I have another identical cable to look at and experiment on and pressing on the metal device on the sides of the head does not do anything that I can see.

Is there a secret to getting these out of the sockets? Once out, I will not be using these again.

A:How to unlock SATA hard drive cable?

Actually, pushing the metal release does depress the two small latches. Try this. Depress the metal release, and put the connector INTO the board first and wiggle it around gently. Then, gently pressing it away from the metal catch, try to remove it.

Hello, I have an acer aspire one that has been sitting around and I have not been able to use it because the hard disk got locked with a password randomly one day... that was years ago, now I am just trying to do a clean install and wipe everything from the hard drive but I cant even access it. I got ultimate boot cd to start off a usb drive and have tried using dariks boot and nuke, and hdd erase 4... unfortunately hdd erase says it cant access a partition, and DBAN just scrolls forever with a bunch of letters and numbers and does not go to the progress of the autonuke or dod/dodshort screen. So then I tried using HDAT2 off of ultimate boot CD and even then I cant wipe it because it says I need the password... I try using "unlock" but then it says "aborted press any key" or something similar. I need help wiping this drive clean, any help would be appreciated.

Worth trying.

You may download Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 32bit from Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu

You may burn the ISO to a CD or create a bootable pen drive with that ISO using Rufus Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Then have a look at this article How to Format a Hard Drive on an Ubuntu Live CD | eHow.com

Let us know how it went. Yep, I would say that you will be experimenting .

laptop. when i restarted the my laptop was unable to unlock the drive (It's reading the drive but not showing on windows explorer and i tried to mange it from bitlocker drive encryption in control panel but bitlocker stopped responding) so I tried to unlock
this on my friend's computer but again the same thing happened after that i tried other steps from

but nothing seems to work out.

suppose the other information needed are as follows:

BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Key

The recovery key is used to recover the data on a BitLocker protected drive.

To verify that this is the correct recovery key compare the identification with what is presented on the recovery screen.

Recovery key identification: 516G88BE-4141-42

Full recovery key identification: 516F88BE-4141-42D8-A247-4997D3F57FDA

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Western Digital WD My Passport 2 TB external hard drive
Western Digital's security software allows a password to be set on the external drive, encrypting it. When the drive is connected to a PC, a virtual CD (VCD) partition runs (via autorun) an unlocker utility WD Drive Unlock.exe, that allows password entry.
When I connect the locked drive to a Windows 7 PC (that does not have any WD software installed), the autoun popup appears and I select "Run WD Drive Unlock.exe". At that point, User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt appears, requiring Administrator
password in order to continue.
WD Drive Unlock then lets me enter password.
Because of UAC elevation, the unlocker can be used only by an Administrator user or by a standard user account who knows the Administrator password.

Is UAC elevation prompt truly necessary?
Is it appearing because Western Digital hasn't coded the unlocker exe correctly, or would any such utility require UAC elevation?

I'd like to find a way that a standard user account can run the unlocker to enter passsword and access the external drive, without having to know the Windows Admin password.

My Inspiron 7559 won't boot, giving the message that hard drive not present/not found. This happened just after I received the laptop back from Dell. I had sent it to Dell without the hard drive for an ethernet card replacement. When I re-installed the drive, it would not boot. It was fine before I sent it.
However, BIOS identifies it as a Seagate Sata drive while Dell Diagnostics declares that all laptop components, including the hard drive are fine.
I first got the PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable error. I soon learnt that this merely meant Bios could not find an internal hard drive and was searching for a network boot. Once I turned off networking in BIOS I went to a simple, no hard drive found error, which is where I am now.
The hard drive may or may not have failed. I've run six hard drive testing programs on the drive in an external dock. The results are ambiguous. Three (Macrorit, EaseUS Partition Master and Western Digital Drive Tester) all give the drive a clean bill of health. Three others (HD Sentinel, HDD Scan and  Crystal Disk Info), however, all reports various degrees of ill-health. Copies of the results of these tests are attached in a PDF file.
Anyway, I can read and navigate the drive with Windows Explorer in an external dock.
I don't want to abandon the drive as I have a lot of software loaded that I can't easily or plain can't reload.

A:Inspiron 7559 Hard Drive not recognized at boot, but seen in Bios/Passes Dell Diagnostics and Other H/D tests?

Does the system also have a small SSD (for cache purposes)?
The default settings from Dell should be UEFI, Secure Boot ON, and the drive is usually set in RAID mode.  Are these settings in place?

so basically, found a random desktop outside the dumpster i guess someone was getting rid of, and i was like, eh, looks pretty new, lemme take it in and check it out. only thing missing was the front piece and the hdd, everything else was in tact. so i figured lemme take the hdd out of my crappy computer i use and try to hook it up to the "new" one. well my old one has an ide setup, and this one is a sata hookup. i unplugged the ide cable and power from the cd/dvd drive in the new machine, set my ide hdd to master, and plugged it into the emachine. i booted everything up, and it came to the boot menu to choose, safe mode, safe mode with networking, normal, ect.. so i choose normal, emachine logo pops up, starts loading, i see hit f2 or f10 in the bottom right hand corner, the usual, but then it just goes back to the boot menu asking for safe mode, normal, ect... i went into the bios and i see it recognizes my hdd and everything else looks normal.

anyone have any idea why it wont boot up. im on my old pc now. i just popped the hdd back in and booted on up no problem. also, just to put it out there, i do have a few external hdd's i could possibly use as an internal hdd i think.

old pc is a dell with ide hdd
new pc is an emachine t3604 with sata hdd hookup
i already tried to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, and last working configuration, but it always takes me back to the boot menu. this is with the old hdd in the "new" emachine.

and welcome to the Forum

You cannot move a drive with XP to another machine without reinstalling ( or a repair install if you are lucky )

Look at the capacitors on the eMachines . . they were hit hard with the bad capacitor plague

To test the machine ability to boot, try booting from a installation cd

Hi all,

I'm using a laptop (pentium III, 128mb, 20gb) with a qwerty keyboard. The problem is that some keys are locked in Fn mode. Such as p (is -) o (is 6) etc..
I tries rebooting, hitting f11, f10, system restore but it didnt work. The strnage thing is that other keys such as all the F (1to 12) keys which also have a second function with Fn seem to work like normal.
When I use the Fn key with for instance p I get p but when I hit p without Fn I get -.
Any ideas?

A:Fn key locked and cant unlock

Is this an external keyboard? See if there is a numlock button (possibly turned on in the bios on boot up) and try pushing that. Laptop make and model and keyboard make and model would help us give you better advice.

It can be upsetting when the laptop fails to power on. I suggest you to remove the static power that may be present by following the steps provided below:1. Remove all the peripherals and cables connected to the back panel.2. Press and hold the “Power” button for 20 seconds release it.3. Reconnect all the cables and check if the system power  on.

The dell desktop got a problem that halt suddenly sometimes. When the problem happens, I have to hold the power button for seconds to power it off. However, when I press the power button again to power it on, It beeps which indicates something got wrong. See the uploaded problem video demo.
The picture below shows that it halted when I tried to recover the system software windows10. The stripes maybe tell me it is a video driver corruption problem. But the problem does not go away even after windows 10 is reinstalled from dell auto-repair.

I also run dell hardware checking utilities online and find no problem.
What's wrong with the dell computer?

I have been working with Gringo on a computer infection problem. The Topic in the Vista forum is "Yet Another Windows Vista Restore attack", posted under my name; and Gringo has been *exceedingly* helpful. We were getting close to resolving the problem, and when I didn't hear anything for 3 days, I checked back; and the topic is now locked.

I am not familiar with the processes in this forum. What do I do at this point to re-open the topic, and to get back in touch with Gringo? I'd like to wrap this up, if I could. This forum has been extremely helpful; and I appreciate the great response from all of you.

A note in Gringo's messages said that I should "bump" the topic; but I don't know what that means. Please let me know how to reinstate our discussion in that topic.

A:Help! My Topic is locked; how do I unlock it?

It appears that this issue is resolved, therefore I am closing the topic. If that is not the case and you need or wish to continue with this topic, please send me or any Moderator a Personal Message (PM) that you would like this topic re-opened.I'll reopen your topic, and send gringo a PM to let him know. In the future however, please be sure to carefully read all posts. This topic will vanish in the next day or so.Thank you,~BladeForum Global Moderator
