W541 generates heat with the latest Nvidia optimus driver

Q: W541 generates heat with the latest Nvidia optimus driver

Hello, Does anyone have heat problems with the latest Nvidia Optimus driver 25.21.14.2591 from the 6 Sept 2019? I am running W10 Pro and after updating to the latest video drivers started to hear the fan spinning when idle and can observe higher CPU temperatures. According to Lenovo this driver is supposed to fix a lot of Nvidia security issues:CVE-2019-5683, CVE-2019-5684, CVE-2019-5685, CVE-2019-5686 and CVE-2019-5687Rolling back to driver version 24.21.13.9836 from Microsoft fixes the fan spinning.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an Acer 5755 which has switchable graphics card within the laptop.

within the BIOS it is enabled to Switchable (not intergrated only)

I have installed only the Intel integrated graphics card drive fine, but within the device manager there appears only one graphics device.

I have looked through Google search and seen that quite a lot of people have had issues with Optimus technology from nVidia also a lot of driver installation issues or not detecting the GPU.

also if I try to install the nVidia graphics driver it also fails to detect any nVidia product.

This has only happened since a fresh installation of windows 7 on the machine. I think the first step is getting the Hardware ID which I am unable to get as the device manager does not show the device, it's almost like it's disabled elsewhere apart from the BIOS which is baffling.

please note the hard drive previously failed and I had purchased an OEM version of windows 7 so it came with no drivers, so I have had to rely on nvidia website and the acer website for support for drivers, I was hoping to get this sorted this weekend seen as it's the bank holiday weekend, also Acer support seem to be offline till Tuesday.

hope somebody can help.

regards,

Zorg.

I'm running a Thinkpad Yoga 15 -Intel i7-5500uNvidia 840mI found a solution on this forum for fixing this with a different laptop, all i need to try their fix is the intel drivers and the NVIDIA Optimus drivers. Hi, I have a T430 running Windows 7 SP1, with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 / NVIDIA NVS 5400M.A while back, an NVIDIA Optimus driver was offered for it via the Lenovo System Update utility. However, when updating to this driver, there are some drawbacks. The Intel HD Graphics 4000 updated driver is fine. The NVIDIA NVS 5400M driver update of v382.99 is causing some issues: 1. There is nearly a 10s black screen hang from the time the OS loads to the login screen, where nothing happens.2. nView is available on this version, though the NVIDIA Control Panel won't open. I have tried to DDU both Intel and NVIDIA drivers and cleanly install it again but the same issue occurs.I decided to DDU the NVIDIA driver only now and installed the previous one (installation still exists on the drive, as part of the preloaded build), in order to keep the updated Intel driver. Perhaps the hardware (NVIDIA part) is just not fully compatible with this version, or perhaps the combination of Windows 7 SP1 and the driver together? I have also tried the driver on Windows update, which is newer but suffering from the same symptoms. Seems like i'm doomed to remain on the NVIDIA v345.35 released back in 2015.Anyone else faced the same issue?

After a few months having the card disabled, I thought trying to solve it again (because I really want to use also the Geforce card). Anyway, I noticed that my current driver version is 10.18.13.6143 while you mention on your website the Optimus driver with version 10.18.13.5435 (in combination with Intel 20.19.15.4312) as latest version for my model (Yoga 15, 20DQ001KUS with Windows10). I thought trying this, but I receive an error when I want to download this driver (on: http://support.lenovo.com/cr/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-Yoga-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-...). W541 Win10 Enterprise
Home Docking Station with 2 1920x1200 Monitors - DVI + DP
Work Docking Station with 2 1920x1200 Monitors - DVI + HDMI (have tried DP too)
NVidia Quadro K2100M Driver 10.18.13.5445 (latest available through System Update)
Intel HD 4600 10.18.15.4256 (ditto)

When putting the W541 to sleep on one docking station then waking it up on the other one, it will BSOD.  If I wake it up away from the docking station and then sleep/dock/wake, it generally behaves itself.  This started happening when I added a second monitor to my work docking station.  Previously with the work dock having only 1 monitor, this did not occur.  Going back to one monitor on the work dock also resolves the issue.

Monitors are all Lenovo 24" displays.  The one at work had an HDMI to DVI cable attached which is why I started there.  I tried putting on a DP to DVI dongle to make both docks identical in display connections, but no joy there either.  Only disconnecting the second monitor on the work dock prevents this crash.

BSOD tends to be either:
BugCheck 0xFC - ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY
BugCheck 0x7E - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Both of them are in the nvlddmkm.sys driver.

Any thoughts?

This might be one of those corner case things, but they're not trapping the error and crashing the OS which is a royal pain.  Not sure where else to report this...

Hello there, In the hope, that Lenovo sees this and fixes the driver. After installing NVIDIA Optimus driver 23.21.13.8875 / 20.19.15.4531 on my W540 with Nvidia Quadro K1100M and Intel HD Graphics 4600, the external monitor can't connectIt goes out of power save when connecting, and then back into power save. (Lenovo ThinkVision 1920*1080, not that it matters) This is due to the new HD Graphics Driver 20.19.15.4531 enabling four "ghost" Generic Non-PnP Monitors.Since it only support two displays, the external monitor is detected but never used. This was an issue in earlier driver versions, and it has now resurfaced with the NVIDIA Optimus driver 23.21.13.8875 / 20.19.15.4531 which is bundling drivers for both the Nvidia and the HD Graphics cards. I managed to get the external monitor back to a working state by:1. In Device Manager: Remove the Intel HD Graphics 4600 card and checking the check box to remove the drivers on the system.2. Running the setup.exe of the win64_154025.4463 driver version downloaded from intels download page. This immidiately got rid of the four "ghost" Generic Non-PnP Monitors, and my external monitor works again... Running on a 2016 driver version But fortunately the Nvidia card is still running on the patched driver version. @Lenovo please fix this.

When I attempt to install the NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver critical update 26.21.14.3213 [1] on Windows 2004 (OS Build 19041.1) -- this is from the Windows Insiders slow ring 20H1 preview -- on my X1 Extreme Gen 1, the installation errors out with: "Sorry. This driver can only be installed on Windows 10 Version 1803 or later." My version of windows (2004) is a great deal newer than 1803. This error also means that the update keeps on coming back in the Vantage app, similar to this issue from July [2]. Lenovo, could you update the driver package so it understands that 2004, although not released yet, is in fact newer than 1803? [1] https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-...[2] https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Pre-Installed-Lenovo-Software/Update-issue-NVIDIA-Optimus-Display-Drive...

Just got a w541 at work today. i dont like it all because of 1 thing, and thats HEAT.  I upgraded from w530 to this one with nice 3k resolution.
my w530 only has 1600x900 and smaller videocard and its not really satisfying.

speed and visuals in general are amazing with this one, but as soon as i start loading the gpu, with lets say 10 minutes of CSGO deatmatch gaming(medium gfx settings), the left side of palmrest and keyboard is so hot i have to quit the game.. the fan is really working hard and making noise but it only gets hotter...

I understand that this is not a gaming laptop in any matter, but this is probobly an issue in other cases aswell. I have read about same problem with the w540.

is there anything to do about this at all ? im seriously considering to return the computer and continue using my w530 which has no problems at all with heat. to bad it only has the k1000 video and 1600x900 resolution

just now playing poker(boss media client) with laptop on my lap, it makes noise and i kan feel the heat on my left leg alot.

this is crazy, i was really looking forward to this laptop, but now i just want to send it back

I first wrote about this issue in another recent thread, when I was trying to deliver HDMI audio+video from my P70 with M3000M NVidia GPU (running Win10) to my LG OLED HDTV connected through either miniDP->HDMI or HDMI->HDMI cables, and failing to get audio. After a fair amount of research I initially came to the eventual conclusion that it was an NVidia problem, somehow related to their latest "retail" 411.95 WHQL driver I was using on my P70 (which was set in the BIOS to run with "discrete graphics").  Reverting back to successively older driver packages also available on the NVidia driver download site, I discovered that version 392.00 was their last WHQL driver package which did successfully install the NVidia HD Audio device which facilitated sending digital audio to an external HDTV via HDMI cable.

So 411.95, 411.81 and 411.63 all failed to install the NVida HD Audio device. But 392.00 (and older versions 391.89, 391.74) all DID install the NVidia HD Audio device. Hmmm.

I opened a ticket with NVidia Tech Support several days ago, and they asked me if I had tried the official Lenovo-provided NVidia Graphics Driver package and if that made nay difference, which to be honest I had not... since I don't run my P70 in Optimus (i.e. "hybrid graphics") mode but rather operate in "discrete graphics" mode and have always used the latest retail NVida drivers. So today I decided to reset my P70 back to "hybrid graphics" mode so that I could install the very... Read more

Hi

I have just installed Win 7 onto a partition on my machine:
? MoBo: ASUS P5N32-e SLi Bios Revision 1203
? Processor: Intel E6750 2.66 MHz
? Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8600GT
? Memory: 2 x 2048 Mb DDR2 PC2-5300 (333Mhz)
? Dual Monitors: 1680 x 1050 and 1280 x 1024
My system is dual boot - running Win XP & Win 7 very successfully.

When I try to change the resolution using the standard Win 7 drivers - the screens go black and I have to restore the OS (the system doesn't crash as such). When I install the latest nVidia Driver (191.07) the same thing happens - garbled screen for a few seconds then blackness (in fact the monitors show they are not receiving a signal)

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there something else I need to upgrade or install first? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

ianmck

Hello and Merry Christmas!

I was hoping for some help with drivers as I am SO not good at dealing with them.

Recently I transferred my old geforce4 card into my husband's computer and installed a new video card into mine because my comp had an agp slot and his didn't, and the new card was not a pci card.

When the old card was in my computer, I had the latest driver installed and it played the rts games that I liked to play with no problem. Now that I have installed it into my husband's comp, it has only the drivers that installed with the card. Since then, the hard drive on my computer has gone out and I lost the driver file that I had saved on my comp. (A VERY nice person had sent me the file, so I simply installed it and played my games happily)

Basically, when I today installed my games onto my husband's comp to play them, they won't play. They used to play on HIS computer with his old card (a terrible riva tnt2 something or another) and now won't play with the old card from MY computer (which isn't the greatest card, but it DID play most of my games fine). I would like to install the latest drivers, but I'm not sure which are the right/best ones.

Currently, the card is:

the driver is listed under dxdiag as:

Hi,

I recently updated my graphics card drivers from 327.23 to 331.58 (and later to 331.65).

With each of the 331.xx drivers I get freezes while browsing (using Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m) or playing games (e.g. Batman Arkham Origins). When the freeze occours everything stands still (youtube videos, gameplay, ...) and the system is not responding (keyboard, mouse). Waiting another 30 seconds triggers a BSOD "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" to appear after which the system reboots. This is not reproducable and seems to occour at random times.

One thing I can say for sure is that the BSOD only occours with 331.xx drivers - going back to older ones makes it disappear.

I'm currently in contact with NVidia support which is not really helpful... they don't seem to inspect the dumps I send them and ask me about hardware (what psu are you using or if my cables are connected...).

I would highly appreciate if someone could help me out... :<

Christian

PS: Changing back to older drivers would solve the freezes but I want the newer drivers for the added functions they offer (Shadowplay, Gamestream to Shield, ...).

Easiest solution is to roll back to the last driver that worked.

Also based on the age of those cards, the latest aren't going to offer much if anything in extra performance. With those cards I would only update if there is a specific fix for any issue you might be having.

When I install the driver off of my cd, I can get max resolution of 1900x1600 (or whatever it is, I know it is in the 1900's).

I installed the newest driver released this month and I lost that now. I can only have 4 different stages of resolution and when I used to have MANY. The highest it goes is 1280x1024. Any ideas?

I will try to download the beta if you think that will help. I'm confused why it would take a step back in resolution?

A:Latest Released Nvidia Driver Issue

There are several possibilities.

1. the cd had a newer driver, the web site is behind. Not usual, but I have seen it happen.

2. somehow a monitor other than the one you have got selected during the downloaded driver setup. I have done this one to myself in the past.

3. probably something I haven't thought of.

Hello All,

So today I attempted to install the latest Nvidia Driver from their official website. While the installation process was being carried out my monitor went to sleep (no signal from the computer) and never came back, even though my pc was still running. So after waiting for a while I manually restarted the computer (power button) and booted in safe mode. Here I was met with a problem signature that included this information:

Problem Signature
Event Name: Blue Screen
OS Version 6.7601.2.1.0.768.3

I also have a dump file in my minidump folder (062515-21091-01.dmp) but I couldn't figure out how to attach it.

Another strange thing is when I restarted windows normally after checking the problem dxdiag.exe and GeForce experience both say that the new 353.30 driver was installed correctly and is running. Hi patmos,
It sounds like your "refresh rate" needs to be bumped up some.
1.Click Start > Control Panel > Display.
2. Click "Change Display Settings"
3. Click "Advanced Settings"
4. Click Monitor Tab.
5. You should see "Screen Refresh Rate". Change it to like 70 or 72. See what works best for you.
6. Also you can choose Colors: True Color (32 bit)

So since that did not work i entered "Safe Mode" and uninstalled the driver again...
After that i tried installed the driver as an "Clean Install" by clicking Custom Install, that option should delete old driver data before installing new, so i tried that...
BSOD once again...
I am running in safe mode right now, and i would like if someone could tell me why i cant install the latest driver and how to fix it..
Also, my graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce G210M (Notebook)

hi there, just to let every one know, the latest driver for nVidia 8400GS causes your screen to change resolution WHILE installing, and after first start-up. just restart your computer a total of two times after installation, and your away!!!!!

this is on a 32bit OS, not sure about x64

Little background, bought an GS60-003 Ghost from MSI a few weeks ago and it game with windows 8 OEM. I really don't like windows 8 so I figured I would give Ubuntu a try and I found a didn't like that either. Ultimately I decided to purchase Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and have that installed as my current OS. I went through and got the updated versions of my drivers from MSI's website (to my knowledge). However whenever I install any type of nvidia driver I get random BSOD. If I remove the nvidia driver and software from my computer then I am good however this is kind of an unaccaptable compromise seeing as how I bought this computer to play games. I used BlueScreenView and it said I had a stop error 0x00000009f due to ntoskrnl.exe however I don't really know what this means and can't seem to find a post with someone having a similar situation as me and I'm really hoping you guys can help before I try and take it someplace to have it serviced. Attached is the debug file created by DM Log Collector.

Hi DillyMac.

You laptop GS60-003 Ghost does not seem to have an onboard GPU, and a dedication one, GeForce GTX 860M only.

The BSOD that you are having means your GPU fails to respond within a specific time during power transition period (hibernate or sleep).

As your computer is new, and you are having the issue with multiple versions of the display driver, better you RMA the laptop.

So I just recently upgraded to Windows 7. After installing all the necessary drivers provided by Windows Update, It was time to install the one provided for the Graphics Card. Ever since I've got the driver set, there seems to be this flicker on the screen that tends to show up every few seconds.

It's really annoying.. can anybody help?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Having the latest driver is not always the best solution.

Have you tried rolling back to the previous driver from within Device Manager or downloading one from the manufacturer's driver page?

I have just installed Win 7 64 bit onto a partition on my machine:

After suggestions from Torrentg and BlackRoseMD1 (many thanks again) on this forum I have upgraded my BIOS to version 1801 and attempted to install the nVidia 195.39 beta driver. Unfortunately the result was the same. The install gets to about 40% then both screens go black. After about 30 secs to a minute the secondary monitor shows a garbled desktop after which it to goes black. After a further minute or so the system reboots and checks the disk for errors - continuing, the screens go black just after the win 7 logo disappears.

So I would appreciate any advice as to how to continue:

Thanks

Ianmck

Since then i have not been able to play any games because of an error saying "Driver does not support Direct3D9.0c"

So since that did not work i entered "Safe Mode" and uninstalled the driver again...
After that i tried installed the driver as an "Clean Install" by clicking Custom Install, that option should delete old driver data before installing new, so i tried that...
BSOD once again...

Hi, I installed the latest Nvidia Optimus drivers for my P70. When I open Google Chrome, Chrome opens a window and immediately closes. I uninstall the latest Nvidia drivers and Chrome works as usual. This occurred also for the version of Optimus drivers prior to the latest ones on the Lenovo drivers web page. Anyone encounter this before?

I installed the new graphics card, Windows recognized it and downloaded the proper drivers. All good.
However, if i try to update the drivers to the latest version, 365.10, during installation the display goes black and won't come back until i restart the PC.

This only occurs when updating to 365.10.
The version downloaded from WU, 355.91, works perfectly.

Is this only a driver related issue or a faulty gfx Card?

I am using NVIDIA GT630.
I started seeing black or transparent borders around the edges of 3D objects.
When I updated the driver, the previous problem got worse.
Depending on what's being run, the problem seems to differ.
On Java-based games, the transparent borders can be seen.
What could be the problem?
I already uninstalled the driver, reinstalled it, cleaned up contacts of video card while wearing static discharger, resetted all settings to default, but the problem seems to be persistent.
What could be the problem?

if you have done all that then the issue is the driver itself nvidia cards have alot of driver issues at the moment have you tried downgrading to an earlier driver or maybe even trying the beta drivers for your card

Hi all,

I am trying to run Skyrim and am having major problems in that it is ridiculously slow even when running minimum specs, and I was wondering if it had something to do with this "Optimus" technology by NVidia.

My DxDiag is posted below, but the graphics card has 1GB dedicated memory and my processor is an i3.

When I go into the options in the Autoplay of Skyrim I get the option to pick graphics options and which videocard I use.

It only shows the Intel HD graphics card and not my NVidia GT 520M. Could this be my problem?

Sorry if my message is garbled and illegible, it's been a long day...

Thanks all.

A:NVidia Optimus problems.

hi there...........
I too had a problem with my optimus but solved it in a very easy way
I have 3gb dedicated nvidia GT555M
8Gb of ram......i7 turbo 2.9ghz
still one software dare told me to upgrade the hardware due to poor quality graphics
here's the solution
open nvidia control panel
In 3D settings.........go to Manage 3D settings....
you will be shown Preferred Graphics Processor - If it is auto select......change it to Nvidia 520(or whatever is being shown)
If you have an Option named PhysX config.....it will again show a preferred processor...., change it to nvidia too............
remember to RESTART your system after doing and accepting these changes.
Try to run your game/software....I hope this works
Also, keep ur graphics card drivers updated....both Intel HD and Nvidia.....

Now here's my experience....
Above changes make my graphics experience best....on cost of my battery and fan noise....
I own a Dell XPS 17
let me know if you need something more or if the above things don't work for you....
enjoy

I have a dell precision 7710 laptop. It has a Quadro M5000M.

In NVidia Control Panel I have adobe Acrobat DC to use the Quadro card, but on the task bar, the Quadro Activity icon does not show acrobat using the Quadro.

If I run Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, Photoshop and Lightroom show it is using the Quadro GPU, but Acrobat does not use the Quadro instead the integrated GPU.

Nvidia Says this is an issue with Acrobat. Adobe Chat had no idea.

I have some large drawing pdf files that take some time to render on the screen.

Should Acrobat DC with Creative Cloud use the dedicate GPU or the iGPU?

I have not tried turning off integrated graphics in the bios. That will turn off the iGPU and Optimus, but then my battery life will suffer since it will always sue the Nvidia GPU.

thanks,

Mike

Hi All

I am having an issue with the optimus technology within the driver for my Nvidia 630m. I have pointed all of my games that need it; to use the Nvidia processor instead of the Intel 4000 series.

When I start the games the in game config menus show that the processor running is the HD4000. I have the latest drivers for both chips installed. I also installed the Intel ones first as forums suggest.

The games are running but they should be using the chip specified in the Nvidia control panel. Any ideas please?

A:Nvidia Optimus technology not working

I have checked dxdiag but it only shows the intel hd. I downloaded gpu-z and that shows both processors. Having searched extensively this afternoon I can see this was also a windows 7 issue, but I can not find a slolution.

My Specs are Intel I7-3610qm
Nvidia 630M with Intel 4000
16gb ddr3 1333 Ram
