Extend W7 HP, 32 bit License Transfer

Q: Extend W7 HP, 32 bit License Transfer

I have W7, HPrem, 32 bit, SP1 OS installed on an Intel D975XBX2 MoBo. The MoBo is beginning to fail. Intel no longer maintains or updates D975XBX2. I have ordered a new Intel MoBo D67BG. I want to reinstall my existing W7 OS on the new MoBo. I have the key for the OS presently instlled on the failing D975XBX2.

Will Microsoft allow me to install my existing OS on the new MoBo or will Microsoft require me to buy a new license?

If Microsoft will allow me to transfer my existing OS to the new MoBo, what department (telephone number?) will I need to reach the right person/department?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you don't change the HDD which has windows on it, you will only have to reactivate windows (1 minute process) however the type of your license might be a problem. The following can happen:

A: You have OEM license (white box). This is a cheaper type of license which can not be transfered from one system to another, and this is determined by the motherboard. So then you will have to purchase windows again.

B: You have a Retail windows 7 (fancy box). Then you have the ability to change the motherboard or any other components, or reinstall windows as many times you wish.

I work for a small company that has about 20 workstations, most running XP Pro, most purchased from Dell with XP preinstalled. We have no volume license.

As PC's are retired from service, can the XP license be transferred to another machine? If so, how? If not, why not? It would seem that legally, if I own 20 legal copies of an OS, I ought to be able to run 20 copies on 20 PC's, regardless of which 20 PC's. Thanks.

I have a locally built computer from a computer store (out of business) that is 4 or 5 years old... it was a store that you basically told them which parts to install and they built it. My computer came with XP Pro installed but I have since bought and installed Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. My son who still lives at home bought a Windows 7 home Premium Family Upgrade Pack since it was cheaper than a single license and still has two unused licenses.

I would like to try to build my first computer so will my Windows 7 license transfer over to the new build? If not would I be able to use one of my son's licenses?

A:Will License Transfer

Mainly it depends on if your license from the original machine was "OEM" or "Retail". USUALLY the licenses from the small shops are OEM which may not transfer...

However, you can just install the OS on the new hardware and attempt to activate it using your old key. It will either work or it won't If not, then you can put in the key to your son's family pack and activate it with that.

Hi everyone,

I just bought a used laptop off of eBay for slightly higher price than normal because it comes with Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2007 Ultimate as well. I was wondering how can I transfer the registration of the operating system and Office to my name?

The Windows Ultimate disk looks genuine but it is the students edition with the registration key. Fortunately, I'm a student too as I went back to college a few months ago.

Thank you,

Using windows 7 ultimate 64-bit at the moment. Planning on upgrading to windows 10 soon. But I heard that once you change your motherboard you have to buy windows 10? Isn't it possible with some phone call to some ms support to transfer the license?

My product ID type is this:

Product ID Type: 5 - Retail

and I read this:

Update: In the comments, several people have asked what happens if you make changes to hardware. As I noted earlier, Microsoft doesn't provide details of how it calculates that hardware hash, but upgrades of system components such as a video card or a hard drive won't normally trigger a reactivation. If that happens, a quick call to the activation line will resolve the issue, often without any human contact required, in minutes.

The one exception is a motherboard replacement, which will inevitably cause the Software Licensing Management utility to recognize the device as a new PC and require reactivation, typically over the phone. A motherboard upgrade, even if you reuse storage, video, memory, and a case, is considered a new PC. In that case, if the underlying Windows license is from a retail copy, that license can be transferred. If you are upgrading (and not replacing) a motherboard on an OEM PC that was sold with Windows preinstalled, the license agreement prevents the license from being transferred.

I have 2 licenses for windows 7 from MSDNA (one 32bit and one 64bit).
I installed the 32bit at my main PC and the 64bit at my secondary pc. I want to upgrade my RAM to 4GB on my main pc and therefore i should change the OS to 64bit.
The problem is that win7 is activated on both machines and my MSDNA account is deleted (I recently got my degree and I'm no longer a student). I have the license keys for both my installations but...

If I format both my PCs and reinstall windows on them (the way I want) will everything be ok?
If I don't format, is my license still valid, or should I buy fresh copies?

A:Transfer MSDNA license

Your license for your 32-bit install will work with 64-bit version. They are interchangeable as long as you install the same SKU the key is for. You 32-bit Windows 7 Professional key will work with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. So as long as you have 2 keys for Windows 7 you can install on 2 computers and 32-bit or 64-bit doesn't matter as long as it is the same version. You download rights have expired from your MSDN account, but the keys are good forever.

That is correct. You are in OEM land and those licenses are not transferrable.

Its been a little while since I've been here and I have a quick question about this new fangled Windows 7.

I have it and Windows XP installed as a dual boot on my machine currently. However, I'm ready to get rid of XP entirely and switch to 7. I have a new SSD coming and I could just clone the drive but instead I was wondering about doing a fresh install on the new drive and just formatting the old one (there is some corruption and I don't really want to take the time to clean it thoroughly).

If I do this, will I be able to re-activate Win7 with my product key or will I have to call Micro$oft?

Thanks, Ryan

I have a laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed (currently running 8.1 64-bit). I also purchased Windows 8 Pro a while ago. It was installed on another laptop, but has since been removed.

I decided to upgrade my current laptop to Pro in the add features menu. It worked fine, but the license is not activated because the activation server thinks the license is still in use by the older laptop.

I tried the automated call service, however, when asked how many computers the product was installed on, I made the error of saying more than one. Since then, when I try the automated call service, my Installation ID is refused or something and I'm put on hold for ages. I can't remain on hold because it's draining my money. I lost 10? in 15 minutes of calls.

I managed to chat with the Windows Answer Desk and all the woman kept pointing me to was to reinstall windows. I really don't want to do that.

Is there a way to transfer the license, or at least go back to Windows 8.1 (the OEM version) without having to refresh?

A:Possible to transfer Windows License from dead B50...

Hi trap ,
Is your Windows 10 a full retail or full OEM version  , was it an upgrade version from and OEM or upgrade from a retail version?
"If you upgrade from a retail version, it carries the rights of a retail version.
If you upgrade from a OEM version, it carries the rights of a OEM version."
More details about Warranty licenses here and here .
OEM licenses are tied to the hardware ID of that system alone , changes in the systemboard would invalidate the key as transferring pre activated harddrive as soon as windows detect it.
While the free upgrade is still available ( deadline july 29 2016) , it would be better to install the original Windows on the working pc then upgrade it with its own Win10 free upgrade version.
About the CPU upgrade for a B50-80 , product specification of the common CPU for this model ( Celeron 3205U i3-5005U i5-5200U i7-5500U ) shows that it is BGA (Ball Grid Arry) socketed , or soldered into the board and therefore non upgradable.
Hope this help answer your query.

Hello all,

I have gone to a school that granted me access to the school's MSDNAA portal where I picked up a license for Windows 7 a few years ago and currently use it on my computer. I will be building a new computer and will be discarding my current computer. I would like to know if it is possible to transfer the license from the old computer to the new computer, given that this is not your standard retail license. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thank you

A:School MSDNAA License Transfer

Hi LicenseQuestion and Welcome to Seven Forums. First exactly what kind of licence do you have? If you have an OEM licence this cannot be moved it stays with the machine for life. If you have an Academic licence you generally have to be attending a recognised school, college or University enrolled in further eduction, a faculty staff member or teaching to use the licence. If it is a retail licence then you can move it around in relative freedom as long as it is not on more than one PC at a time.

EULA clause 4b states:

b. Stand-alone software. If you acquired the software as stand-alone software (and also if you upgraded from software you acquired as stand-alone software), you may transfer the software to another device that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software to a device owned by someone else if (i) you are the first licensed user of the software and (ii) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Every time you transfer the software to a new device, you must remove the software from the prior device. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between devices.

It is not clear how this may be done, especially if the upgrade to Windows 10 was done from a retail copy of 7 or 8.x, or 8MCE.

I cannot find a tutorial here on Tenforums.

A:Motherboard failure! Windows 8 Pro license transfer?

You can transfer the Win8 license, if it's not OEM.

If it's an upgrade license, there might be some license agreement concerns, but you can still do it.

Are the RAID controllers the same on the old and new motherboards? I suppose that they are not, or Win8 would have been likelier to boot on the new board.

(I'll probably not use motherboard RAID again. I tried an Intel RAID 10 a few years ago, and got tired of the array re-verifying after every bluescreen. That took hours, even though the individual drives were only 500GB each.)

I had Amazon UnBox. I purchased and downloaded videos onto an external hard drive to view. I viewed the videos on Windows Media Player. When UnBox ceased operations, Amazon assured me that I would still be able to view my purchased and downloaded videos, which was true.

My computer crapped out (motherboard died, but I have the HD in an another external mount) and I have since gotten a new one. I hooked up my external drive with my videos but I am unable to play them (it says the DRM license is not valid). Amazon says that the license is only valid for the original computer (ie I am SOL).

Is there anyway to transfer the licenses to the new computer?

I tried Amerisoft DRM Media Converter but it doesn't work because you need to have the proper licenses (so I should have done this BEFORE my computer crashed).

Please help.

A:Transfer Amazon license of purchased videos from old computer to new

Assuming your new OS and WMP player versions are the same, you may be able to move the keys (but not likely). I've not dealt with it, but WMP deals with DRM on it's own, and has tools for backup/restore of licenses (which also isn't going to help as you didn't make a backup). But you may be able to copy to the keys. At least that is where I would start looking.

I'm actually thinking about ditching Norton for G-Data.

I love their software, but the only problem is that i don't know how their license activation work. I tend to reformat a lot and change computer once in a while. Do they have an online license management, such as Norton or Trend Micro ?

I'm worried as it says on their website "The number of licence transfers is limited ? when the limit is reached the licence is completely blocked, so that no more updates of any kind can be downloaded.", but it does seems outdated since it's from 2014. Not sure it has changed since then...

I'm just asking as i like being in control of a license, or at least knowing that i will work as long as i don't exceed the number of devices in use. I don't like licensing such as HitmanPro, as you have to contact them directly to reset the license.

Thanks a lot ;-)

Hi folks,
I am working with a company (that I have actually worked with for over 10 years on a consulting basis) and we are auditing our Microsoft Windows Server and server product licenses and preparing to upgrade Windows Server products.  We have ran into a snag, where the former System Administrator left the company a few years ago, however it was understood that the information regarding the VLSC was transferred to another partner in the company.  A new Systems Administrator has taken over, and we have determined that we do not have this information, including a Microsoft account username and password to access the VLSC and our Windows Server 2008R2 product keys, license agreements, SKUs, and downloads.  Unfortunately, the situation became took a turn for the worse about three months ago when the partner that had this information passed away.  No one at the company has access to this login information.  I currently administer most of their licensing, and have access to their much of their licensing information, download, product keys, etc., but I am clearly missing some very important ones.  I called Microsoft and they were of no assistance.  Since I am an administrator on the network, I can create a mailbox that the VLSC was probably originally registered under, however the VLSC says that Microsoft account is not even valid, not even prompting for the password.

Windows Vista and newer have built-in tools that can resize volumes. See our tutorial for that here.Windows XP and earlier don't have the tools built-in, so you have to use a third party partitioning tool. We have a tutorial for that, too. This tutorial covers shrinking an existing volume to make space for a new second volume, but resizing two existing volumes is substantially similar.

This is a very quick and probably easy question.
I am offering regular KMS client servers, so the customer do not need to do any licensing as it will just happen out of the box.
BUT, we also want to offer a Bring Your Own license option, so the end customer can insert their own key.
So,I understand how to change the keys on our Windows Servers, and I wonder whether this builds will accept any OEM key as a replacement for the default KMS client one or not?

Many thanks.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. I didn't really know what to put it under..

I was upgrading my system, from XP to Vista. I tried the 'keep all my current files and settings' option for the upload, but it wouldn't let me use it.
So, I used the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Then I deleated my files on my computer - no point in having two copies. (I now know how stupid this idea was).
When I had successfuly uploaded Widows vista onto my computer, I found that it didn't actualy have the files and settings transfer wizard - it had something called 'Easy Transfer' instead. Easy tranfer is incompatible with the File and settings transfer wizard.

So, now all my files are sitting on my Hard drive in .dat files, and I don't know how to get them back.

Help me please.

A:File and Settings Transfer Wizard vs. Easy Transfer

you could download and install FAST to complete the transfer. i know that solves the problem when migrating from one XP /SP combination to another, perhaps it will work for an XP to Vista migration too. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c9-f16c-4c52-a203-8daf944dd555&displaylang=en

this link is for v2.6, but 3.0 is also available on the site.

Can anyone help,
Our old PC which was running XP was getting ready for a failure but before it died I did manage to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy the much cherished ones to my external hard drive. They are now sitting on there as a dat file. Because we didn't have the new PC yet we did not have the chance to run Vista Easy Transfer on the old PC. Does any one know how I can make this dat file become something Vista will recognise and import?

Try this . . Suggest you first copy the dat file and run the extract program on the copy

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.

The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt

Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that... Read more

I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the soft provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista, but not the opposite. Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?

A:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Pro SP2.
One is mine and one is my wife?s.
Both are connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 router which is then connected to a cable modem.
Both can connect at high speed to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup and have unique names.
They can see each other in the workgroup.
They can ping each other.
I can browse all shared drives in both directions from both PCs.
Everything seems to be working perfectly except if I try and transfer a file from my PC to my wife?s it takes approx 2 minutes per MB. However if I transfer a file the other way it works flawlessly and at high speed.

I have checked that all the required services are running and that there is only one master browser.

I have changed all the cables and tried different ports on the router.

NetMeter shows a maximum transfer speed of about 250kbps and the networking tab in task manager shows a network utilization of only 1%

Any advice would be gratefully received, as this is slowly driving me insane.

A:Slow file transfer in one direction, quick transfer the other way!

You should try data transfer using something other than WInbdows Networking. Set up some FTP server software for example. This way you can see if the problem is with the network or with Windows.

Disable software firewalls and antivirus on the computers?

My last problem was solved and everything works fine now. I need the documents and emails from the old computer. I have it on my external and made a copy to my root C drive.

The problem is that I used Windows file transfer 7 and I want the files back to my Vista computer that I reinstalled. When I use Windows file transfer I get an error message that says I should choose a valid file.

What can I do?

A:Windows file transfer doesn't transfer back

Look here & try the software suggested: -
