UltraNav/trackpoint problems....

Q: UltraNav/trackpoint problems....

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This topic has been an ongoing problem with the Driver, etc., etc., etc. for 10 years + or -. I have four X120e Thinkpads with Windows 10 v1909 installed on each one. They appear to have almost exactly the same Synaptics software installed. They definitely show exactly the same devices in Device Manager and yet two of the Thinkpads have the UltraNav tab  on the Control Panel/Mouse control and two of them do not have the tab. I have been chasing old posts (such as 2011, 2015, etc. for more than two days now with no working solution. Can anyone please help me out?

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Dear all, My TrackPoint/UltraNav's sensitivity is reduced after rebooting and jumps back to maximum (what I set it to) whenever I access the additional mouse options - don't need to switch to the ThinkPad tab, just opening the menu suddenly increases the sensitivity back to normal. I'm under Windows 10 Build 17134.48.

Hello there, I have an issue with UltraNav TrackPoint while trying to scroll using the middle button. It seems Windows 10 are ignoring the middle button completely. Ive tryied the solution I found here with the registry, but with no luck. I  remember the scrolling worked only for like two days after I purchased this repassed X230 tablet. After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? Hi all, I'm running into any issue with my Lenovo T470 20HD where the 3 Trackpoint buttons (Left, Middle, Right) are all performing the same action (Scroll and Right-Click). As one can imagine, this is very frustrating! I simply want the Left button to function like a left-click and the Right to function like a right-click; normal behavior.  The picture below shows the buttons I am referring to:           I have checked my UltraNav settings under the mouse properties, however I only have 2 options: Right-Click and Scroll. I have tried uninstalling and removing the driver. Reinstalling from Lenovo's website, with no luck. I have also update the BIOS to the latest version. I tried disabling and re-enabling TrackPoint in the BIOS with no luck.             I am running the latest version of Windows:    Any help would be apprecaited!

I just upgraded my T410 BIOS to 1.45; I don't recall the exact previous version number but I believe it was in the 1.30's. Since I've done this, two things have happened: the trackpad no longer works, and the Trackpoint is now very laggy/slow/jumpy; it looks like it only updates about twice a second. Here's a video of what it's doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzHL5ZI2TcM I'm using Windows 10 here in this video. The CPU load shown in Task Manager is very low, indicating it's not the computer itself lagging. Secondly if I boot the Windows 10 install CD, or an Ubuntu LiveCD, the same problem is happening, indicating that it's an issue with the laptop/BIOS itself, not with Windows. So far I've tried: - removing the battery/unplugging the laptop- disabling the trackpad/trackpoint in the BIOS, booting Windows, re-enabling it... I found this while searching on here for the same problem. Though it's a different laptop/BIOS, maybe it's the same bug? https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/UltraNav-Trackpad-stops-working-after-ne... Anyway the onboard Ultranav is now pretty much unusable on this laptop and I'm now stuck using an external mouse, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also, I attempted to file a support ticket except the Lenovo website is doing this. http://i.imgur.com/kNyUMcl.png

I hope someone can help.  My Trackpoint has a mind of its own.  It just creeps up to the left and pins itself in the upper corner of the screen.  I have downloaded the latest drivers, this has no effect.  I am running XP S/3.  The battery problem is simply this, I don't know if the battery is 'shot' or the charger is not working.  Can anyone tell me how I can check either part before I have to buy something I don't need?I have been fooling around with this problem almost a month with no success.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:TrackPoint and Battery Problems

I had the exact same problem for months.  I finally gave up and uninstalled the trackpoint completely and started using the USB mouse that works with my tablet.  That part works great but if you can't use a mouse that plugs into the back of the computer or anything else like a keyboard that plugs into that spot.  Forgive me for not knowing the technical term for that spot. Just a note of caution - a month or two after I uninstalled the trackpoint, I started getting an error message 8611 (please see my post right below yours) and this may be related.  I'm waiting to find out. Good luck, I know it drove me completely crazy.  In the meantime, try using another mouse, preferable a USB mouse since that's the only one that seems to respond. debbie

Hi, I'm setting up my new thinkpad t440s and I cannot get my trackpoint to work.  It does not respond and in my mouse properties/thinkpad section, the Touchpad is clearly enabled, but the Trackpoint options are all greyed out.  In the pointing options dropdown, I can only see the option to 'Use TouchPad only.'  I strongly prefer the Trackpoint to the Touchpad and would prefer it if possible. I currently have Synaptics pointing device driver version 18.0.7.109, the most recent version.  I've tried rolling back to previous versions and this issue still persists.  I also have gone into BIOS and disabled and re-enabled the Trackpoint in boot settings. Unfortunately, since this is a work machine, I do NOT have the capability to remove the keyboard or replace parts.  Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

Contact the vendor that provided you this package."What to do? The machine, as it is now, is nearly unusable, unless I use an external mouse.

I have put this post under 'ThinkPad 400 & 500 series' because it relates directly to a T520 but the principle may apply to other Microsoft processing systems which, under certain circumstances, tend to lose their user specified pointing device settings. Not only are there many posts on the Lenovo Community about this problem but also on the net generally. The normal scenario is that when new, the machine always retains the settings, but then after an event: BIOS update, OS update, installation of new software, re install from back up, etc, the settings are no longer persistent. Typically, the settings vanish, but not always, following a reboot, after a user log out and log in, on a return from sleep, and after an un-dock. Some approaches to correct the problem seem to be successful at first: install latest BIOS, install latest UltraNav driver, revert to an old driver that once worked, run antivirus software, reinstall power manager, and one I thought did the trick, run DiskCleanup. But sooner or later the problem resurfaces. So, how to find a solution? The answer seemed to be to find the root cause, which I investigated by comparing a G570, which has never lost its pointing device settings, with a T520 which was fine when new but then started losing its settings; the G570 has had an easy life while the T520 has had a harder time: bigger disk, many complex programs installed, including NET framework, etc. I found that the G570 had command, c:\Program Files\... My computer had restarted from an update and now the only things that work are trackpoint and trackpad pointing, and trackpoint scrolling (surprisingly). trackpoint and trackpad clicks (tap or button) don't work, trackpad scroll and other gestures don't work. I thought it might have been a driver issue because at the time I was using windows enhanced trackpad driver but after switching in between the enhanced driver and the synaptics drivers from the the x260 driver page, neither seemed to fix anything. The trackpoint and trackpad work fine on a usb linux distro so it we know its not a hardware issue. The after start up, clicks work once but appear to behave as a holding down right click, after that it just doesnt work anymore. Right now, I'm just using a mouse. Any ideas?

I started having issues with the ultranav middle button. It works when i start the computer but after a few minutes of scrolling up and down it does not work anymore.  The only way to have it function again is to either restart (which will again only work for a few minutes) or use a bluetooth mouse to uncheck and check the mouse settings for trackpoint which that too will work for a few minutes only. I've updated the bios and updated the driver. Still not stable. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hi Mark_lenovo or other thinkpad expert, I will ask for your help in finding a driver for the UltraNav 2(ALPS) on the Thinkpad X300 for windows 10(64bit). Currently I use the latest driver for windows 7 (7.202.1616.206):

https://support.lenovo.com/jp/en/downloads/migr-72368

But that one has issues with the metro/Modern parts of windows 10 UI: Touchpad scroll works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, File Explorer, Device manager, Help, Services.msc and some other places, but it does not work in Start menu or any menu under system, Control panel, Edge or Windows Store.

Most likely it's because the programmers didn't know about the modern UI when they made the driver and therefore it does not support it, and that is why scroll is not working in those parts of the UI.

The synaptics touchpad on some Thinkpad models works fine with driver version 17.xx.xx.x but as soon as it is updated scroll function seize to work again - mine is ALPS Ultranav 2 touchpad - is it possible to "cheat a bit" and use the ultranav utility in combination with the synaptics driver or can synaptics driver replace the ALPS driver totally(I tried this on my R500 and it didn't work, the touchpad were disabled after restart)?

Do you know of any other thinkpad models with same Ultranav 2 touchpad(Palmrest FRU# 42X5021) that has a newer driver and will work with the X300 and windows 10 Modern UI? Could you find out?

I already tried most of the series 8 drivers I could find o... Read more

Hi all, The latest version of the touchpad driver for the T440 disables my trackpoint and removes the option to re-enable it from the Mouse Properties menu. Has anyone else had this issue? Hi, I am a new owner of a Lonovo ThinkPad with Windows 7, and I am having trouble with the settings. I am a lefty, so when I first configured the laptop I changed the mouse settings so that they are reversed. This worked fine.

But! I also wanted a real mouse, so I got a Microsoft wireless mouse (USB). Now, I mouse right handed since I am more used to it, so while the IntelliPoint software was installing, I changed the mouse settings back to default. I figured I would just go and change the settings whenever I didn't want to use the mouse.

But when the software finished installing, I found that the Control Panel Mouse window changed! Now, even when the mouse is unplugged, the place where I had been able to change the button settings is a new window that is specific for this mouse! Plus, these changes don't affect the UltraNav, so those buttons are still set for right-handed.

How do I change the UltraNav button settings?

A:Changing UltraNav settings while a mouse is connected

Hello thebookster, and welcome to the forum.

I think you will have to uninstall the new mouse to get your old settings back. Should this work and you set up your Ultranav for a left handed person the Ultranav settings may still not work on reinstalling the new mouse. but it is worth a try.

I did a search to see if this was already posted but didn't find it.  So, here's my story. I have a P40 Yoga that's about a year old.  A couple of weeks ago, I received a pop-up from Lenovo Vantage saying there was a system update.  Like a good user, I said OK.  I didn't notice it right away (because I use an external mouse) but the trackpad, left/right click buttons and the "trackpoint" center button all stopped working.  I did a lot of searching to see if there was a resolution but couldn't find one. Eventually, I went into Control Panel | Device Manager | Mice and other pointing devices | ELAN pointing device | Driver and saw that there was a recent update.  Fortunatly, there was a "Roll Back Driver" option which I figured couldn't hurt anything.  After a reboot, the driver is back to one dated 2/13/2017 version 11.21.9.3.  All mouse accoutrements are once again working. What prompted me to post today is that the Lenovo Vantage pop-up appeared again telling me there's an update and it wants to put the bad driver back. Irconically, the pop-up says: "Lenovo recommends that you install these updates to optimize your computer" Yah, right!  Now I'm sceptical about ever doing another update.

Hello, recently I noticed that on my up-to-date Windows 10 (Creators Update) there is a process called "WMI Provider Host" (WmiPrvSE.exe) constantly using 1-3% CPU no matter what you are doing. I've been observing this behaviour just recently (maybe 1-2 weeks). So I started with a fresh (completely clean) Windows 10 installation on my Thinkpad X260. I observed this behaviour instantly after Windows finished its instalation and update process without installing any custom software from Lenovo website. When I try to kill this WMI host instance, it is restarted imidiatelly and problem continues. I attached threads output from ProcessExplorer. I looks like the thread execution is deadlocked or something similar. So I started digging which application is causing this WMI host cpu usage. After disabling Synaptic Pointing Device service called "SynTPEnhService" this behaviour disappeared. So I started digging around Synaptic executables. I was able to find out, that process causing this cpu usage is SynTPEnh.exe, which I believe is some kind of main (parrent) process for Synaptic driver functions. When I kill this particular process, then I am able to pernamently kill the WMI host causing those troubles. Well, it actually restarts again, but has no cpu usage. I am using latest version of Synaptic drivers available, which is 19.3.4.83. Is anybody else observing such behaviour? What is the solution for this problem? I can find where the driver has been downloaded on my computer, but the computer still says that "UltraNav driver is not installed," and the driver update still remains available on the system updates. I've tried downloading again and again, only to re-write and reinstall the download, with no effect. I've also tried going directly to the Lenovo website and downloading the driver from there to the same effect. Any advice?

I installed and activated Windows 10 on a pair of X-series laptops, an X220 and an X201.  Everything was just fine except that the touchpad does not control the cursor well, either freezing it or bouncing around madly.  I finally solved the problem by changing the UltraNav driver to PS/2 Mouse driver, less functional, but it actually works.  When I ran the Windows 10 update, it reinstalled the UltraNav driver, so I had to revert back to the PS/2 driver and reboot.  (The UltraNav driver downloaded from the Lenovo site is equally defective.) Yes, I know these are older systems, but can't Synaptics do a working driver?  Or maybe Microsoft could install the basic PS/2 Mouse driver as the default?  I must be dreaming.  Anyway, the problem of a properly function touchpad has a solution.

Hi I use a USB mouse with my laptop so not sure when trackpad/point stopped working- I first became aware of the issue a couple of weeks ago. I have since reset my machine (Windows 10) twice to see if that fixes it and also downloaded drivers from this site but to no avail. Can anyone offer assistance? Thanks in advance Huw

On my X1 Carbon 7th Gen - (Type 20QD) the touchpad is not working. track point is working fine so are the ultra nav buttonstouchpad is completely unresponsivethere is not ultranav or synaptics tab in my addtional mouse options (mouse properties) in settingsI have touchpad settings in windows settings. I tried setting sensitity to max. Didn't change anything. That's the only option apart from the link for additional settings which is missing the tab. I can't roll back drivers -> option is greyed out on HID-compliant mouse (I assume thats the touchpad in device manager)there doesn't seem to be a synaptic driver installedon the lenovo X17 support page is no synaptic driver to download only a firmware update. Which, when I try to execute, tells me that there needs to be a synpatic driver installed in order to upgrade the firmware. I tried pressing FN+F8 and all other F keys...I also can't see a function key that enables or disables the touchpad. Is there one? In BIOS both trackpoint and touchpad are turned onThankful for any advice...

*Please read in entirety before replying*The situation is as follows: - Purchased new X1 Thinkpad Yoga 3rd Gen in Jan 2019; Windows 10 64-bit- Bought with the MISTAKEN belief that the track pointer stick would have "press to select/click" capability. Not having this feature is an absolute DEAL BREAKER for me.  - Steps taken in attempt to resolve the problem: 1. Uninstalled driver for Synaptics Pointer in Device Manager 2. Installed most recent version of Ultranav Driver3. Result: NO CHANGE  - In MOUSE PROPERTIES, there is no option for "press to select" - only choices are to use for scrolling or as middle click. Question 1: Is there ANY WAY possible to incorporate the press-to-select option for the pointing stick on this model?Question 2: If it is not possible, which Thinkpad models currently DO include this option?  Thank you in advance...

Thus far I failed to identify the circumstances in which the touchpad stops working. It seems to sometimes happen when it checks for an update. What is also curious that the cursor will sometimes mess up such that the text cursor will be displayed as the context menu cursor. Not sure if this is related. The touchpad works again after restart. Everything is up-to-date, running Windows 10 (1909). The TrackPoint is unaffected by this.
