OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

Q: OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

I've been given a computer in the following state:
- Hard drive was reformatted with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro (same as shipped) which is now showing as not activated.
- I was told that an OEM disc was used to reinstall Windows but it looks like a retail version might have been used instead along with what appears to be a generic key.
- I do not have recovery media and I don't see a COA label on this model.
The computer all original parts and it's my understanding that the activation key is BIOS based. Is there way to activate Windows on the spot without tracking down recovery media, backing everything up, and then reinstalling?
I apologize if I've missed any critical information. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: OptiPlex 3020: Windows 7 Clean Install - Failed Activation

You can reactivate with OEM SLP usng the ABR program and Dell cert files. Personally however I would perform a complete clean install because it looks like the person who clean installed Windows 7 Pro didn't know what they were doing... See here:

Some help please as I want to install an SSD in my PC and use it in place of the existing HDD
Where and how should it be mechanically installed?
Besides the SSD what else will I need?
Do I need a caddy if so which one ?
Will the data cable be from the motherboard or the existing HDD?
Will the power be looped from the HDD power - if so which cable will I need?
Are slave and master settings needed?

First.. let me take this opportunity to tell you just how bad Dell support <profane>. I got in to chat. Told them I have updated 6 Optiplex 3020's to Windows 10 and all 6 are locking up. Dell's response? "Sorry we can't help you. Not our problem". What a great company with great support!
So that is the problem. There is obviously a problem with Windows 10 and the Optiplex 3010. Anyone else having this problem?

This kind of surprises me. Early in the Windows 10 game it was obvious there was (and still is) a big problem with the Intel Video Driver for Windows 10 32-bit. Dell has ignored the problem. The computer locks up tighter than a drum. Powering off is the only solution.
The fix is to install an older video driver but every time Microsoft comes out with an update the video drivers gets updated and puts it right back to where it starts locking up again.
This was a year ago and the problem still exists. I am kind of curious why this problem hasn't shown up here. Can anyone say they are running Windows 10 32-bit on a Optiplex 3020 and not locking up?

We recently upgraded our OptiPlex 3020 machines to Windows 10. We have run into an issue where our users will report no network connection. The network jack has a solid orange link light with no activity. When we get into the machine, the network card is missing. BIOS does not list the network card. PXE boot won't work. The only solution is to pull the power cable for 30 seconds, then the network starts working properly again.
We have the latest BIOS version (A15), and we have tried both the latest network drivers from Dell and Realtek's website.
We have had this occur on at least 20 machines randomly so far.

This OptiPlex 3020 is encountering strange problem getting the Windows 10 v1607 or Anniversary update installed.  It looks fine in Update and Security as it finished initial install and prompt to "Restart".  The subsequent installation process after it's 1st reboot never get pass ...0%.  It is suggested that the latest OptiPlex drivers should be installed.  So I went to Support.Dell.com and allowed it to auto detect and install latest drivers and software.  Several Chipset update seems to have came down and installed without issue.  I didn't see any device drivers came down.  But the Windows 10 update still failed at "....0%" during the initial reboot.  According to Dell, OptiPlex 3020 is tested for Windows 10 v1607 Anniversary update.
1. Does anybody in this Forum know about this issue?
2. How else do I know if required drivers are installed?
Thank you and much appreciate your help.

I while back I put a new hard drive in & swapped out a stick of Ram for a bigger one in a Toshiba laptop (OEM Key) at the same time.

I had to re-activate it by calling Microsoft up and do the phone verification to get the confirmation ID.

It has been activated without issues for a while.

If I do a clean Windows install now will my original Product key work correctly or will I need to go through the phone verification again each time Windows is reinstalled on this machine?

I don't have the conformation ID characters when I did the phone verification.

A:Windows 7 Activation after hadware change and clean install later on

You normally only have to do the phone confirmation the first time you activate - and around the 5th time (end every 5th time after that).

Hello everyone, So I have an HP Pavilion 15-ab211nx which came pre-installed with windows 10 home x64 and everything was working fine. After a few months I performed a clean install of windows 10 and I reinstalled the same version as before. It has been almost a week now and I still my windows hasn't activated yet and I'm getting this error: "Windows can't activate at this time. Try actuvatung again later. If that doesn't work, contact your system admin. Error code 0x8007007B" From what I understand my windows key should be built in within the motherboard and it should activate on its own, but it hasn't. Also, I haven't made any hardware changes. Any idea how I can activate it again? Thanks!

Hi my dell OptiPlex 3020MT updated automatically to Fall creators update yesterday everything is working fine expect for the soundcard. It sounds tiny and flat. I downloaded and tried to install official Windows 10 audio driver from dell support but it can't be installed as it is not compatible with latest windows 10 build. I have to rely on windows update and Maxx Volume Pro is not working with driver provided via windows update. MaxxVolume, MaxxLeveler and MaxxBass sounds flat when I try to adjust it manually. All drop down options is empty.. no preset equalizer is available in drop down menu and user defined equalizer does not make any audible sound difference when I try to manually sets it. Also under speaker setup; Speaker size (Small, Medium, Large) does not make any audible sound difference.. it just sounds tiny and flat.
Kindly provide a work around for this issue. At least a compatible audio driver for fall creators update.

I have a very specific question that i can not find an answer.

I bought a new pc and i want to buy Windows 10 Pro. I have found a very good price for a Windows 7 Pro license which will give me a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

I will have the key in the following days but the pc is assembled and ready.

(1)Can i clean install Windows 10 Pro and activate it with the windows 7 pro key that has never been activated even for a windows 7 machine or
(2)should i first install windows 7 pro, activate it with the key and then clean install windows 10 and activate it with the windows 7 pro key

Thank you.

A:Activation of Windows 10 (clean install) from a Windows 7 Pro edition

Hi Trod,
You can install W10 NOW and you dont have to activate it immediately, theres a 30 day grace period.
So when you get your W7 package you can activate it with the product key.

note your purchased W7 pro licence MUST be either System builder or retail or it will not activate

I want to add a graphics card to my Optiplex 3020. The "small form factor" means I need a half-height card. I was told by tech support that only two cards work: Radeon HD 8490 and HD 8570. The 8490 gets mediocre reviews, and today I was told the 8570 is no longer available (haven't been able to find it online anywhere). I reached sales support and was given other Radeon models that would work, but it turned out all of those are full-height adapters. Can anyone provide the models that will work in my computer? Thanks for any help.

A:Graphics Card for Optiplex 3020 SFF

all the HD 7000 and HD 8000 cards from AMD are discontinued and have been replaced by the R7 series card ... you need to find a low profile r7 240 that comes with low profile brackets ... he is the new equivalent of the 8570 ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150677&ignorebbr=1

it's also important that the graphics card fan does not stick out past the width of the silver part of the card as you have almost zero room between the expansion slot the card goes in and the computer's power supply.

Hi - I'm a newbie to this forum, also to using a Dell Optiplex 3020 Compact Tower. I'm running Win7 Home Premium on an SSD.
My PC is working OK, but should I switch off all mains power when my PC shuts down - something I've always done with previous PCs, as a safety thing.
When I shutdown the Dell in the normal way, an amber motherboard LED still glows, which proves power is still being supplied to the PC. I then switch off the mains supply at the wall.
The next time I put the wall switch on, the Dell did a little beep, the PC's power button & hard drive lights flashed, & the amber LED glowed - but the PC didn't power up until I pressed the front panel power button.
Is it OK to turn off all power after the PC shuts down, or better to leave the power on? Could this be a fire risk if something went wrong?
I'd appreciate the opinions of all you experts out there! Many thanks for your thoughts, Niloc1017

A:Optiplex 3020 - fire risk?

Yes, it's ok to turn off the power at the mains after you shut down normally through Windows.  The LED on the motherboard only means that the PC is getting "flea" power which is a very small amount of energy.
The behavior you're seeing when you turn the mains on again is perfectly normal. The PC thinks that it's recovering from a power failure so it turns on for a second or two to see what it's supposed to do when recovering. If BIOS is set to "do nothing", it turns off again. If it's set to "reboot", it automatically reboots without you having to press the power button.
If you're lazy me, you can set BIOS to reboot when recovering from a power failure. So as soon as you turn the mains on, the PC boots and you don't have to do anything else. I have PC, monitor and speakers connected to the same surge protector which I turn off every night. So when I turn the surge on, the PC boots, and the monitor and speakers turn on at the same time.
If you decide to use a surge this way, just make sure that it's capable of handling the power demands for all the devices connected to it.

We have no issues with Wake on LAN (WOL) with our Dell OptiPlex 3010 machines, but I cannot get our Dell OptiPlex 3020 machines to boot in the same way.
In the BIOS I have enabled WOL and PXE booting as follows:
System Configuration > Integrated NICEnabled w/PXE is ticked
Power Management > Wake on LAN:LAN with PXE boot is ticked.
If I send a WOL signal, without PXE, I simply want to boot the machines normally into Windows, the 3010 machines will wake and look for a PXE server, when none is available, they will exit boot from LAN and boot from disk. Which is how I want it to work.
But the 3020 machines - which are set up as close to identically as the 3010s as possible - will also wake and look for a PXE server, but when none is available they will ask for a key to be pressed before they will boot from disk.  That's no good; I want them to boot into Windows (without user intervention) if there's no PXE server available!
If I set the 3020s to simply "Boot from LAN", then sending a WOL signal will correctly boot them into Windows. But that's no good either, as I want to have the option to PXE boot the machines remotely from time to time, as I want to be able to re-format a whole room of PCs using SCCM occasionally.
Does anyone know what the correct BIOS settings should be, to get the same result on the 3020s that I get on my 3010s?
Thanks in advance.

I have a few 3020s I need to enable WOL for from a remote office.
The Dell Command/Configure utility however only allows me to set the wake on lan setting to : lanwithpxe

That would be fine, I can wake the PC with a magic packet , it fails to find anythign to net boot from, you'd expect it to fail over and boot from the hard drive at this point but instead it just shows "No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine."
If I press any key it boots ok even thought the nic is the first boot device. Do on a manual boot it fails over to the HD, on a WOL boot it doesn't

I've played around with other settings that disable the NIC as th 1st boot device but they don't seem to over ride the lanwithpxe setting.

Has anyone found this issue on a 3020 or any other machine?

A:Optiplex 3020 - Cannot enable wake on lan remotely

Until very recently all was fine but somethings happened and now the audio is being compressed. I only noticed it about 2 days ago but it might have been doing it for a bit longer than that, I can't be sure. It's nasty and kills the life in music.
I wonder if a Win10 update has screwed the audio up.
I've checked all the settings I can think of and they look good.  I wonder if it's the Dell audio Maxx Audio Pro that came with the PC.  It looks like any eq or dodgy settings are disabled but it's just the sort of add-on that might cause problems. I think I may have had to switch settings off here when the PC was brand new to get it sounding right....but that might be a flawed memory.
The realtek driver says it is up to date and hasn't been changed since 2015
Any help very gratefully received.

We all know that Windows 8.1 is a FREE update to Windows 8 OS. Recently my teacher's Toshiba Satellite Laptop shipped with Windows 8 Single Language, is very slow, so she wanted me, to do a clean install to get rid of bloatware. And also, we all know that Microsoft released a tool that downloads an installation media of Windows 8.1. So here's my questions:
1. Will Windows 8.1 activate with a OEM key embedded in the BIOS?

2. If I install Windows 8.1 does it automatically activate it without Internet?

2. If I install Windows 8.1 does it automatically activate it without Internet?

- No. it needs online activation.
