Backup Virus Possibility

Q: Backup Virus Possibility

Recently my computer crashed and I reinstalled Windows and formatted my computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). I created a backup (consisting mostly of photos and old school documents) after my computer crashed using an advanced option provided by my computer. The first I reinstalled Windows, I didn't format my computer. It told me that in order to perform updates, it needed to restart my computer, so I tried restarting it, but after waiting a long time for it to log off, a blue screen appeared saying "A problem...". I couldn't read it because it disappeared really quickly, but it obviously meant that something was wrong. When I turned my computer on again, it went back to Startup Repair, and I reinstalled Windows again. I didn't format my computer. This time it froze and ended up shutting down. I turned my computer on again and reinstalled Windows, but this time I formatted my computer. It seems fine now, but I'm worried that my backup holds some sort of virus or the cause of my computer crashes. If i move my backup onto this computer again, is there a possibility that my computer will crash again?

Preferred Solution: Backup Virus Possibility

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer just hung and it went back to normal and when it hung, i was doing something in IE and i heard a beep sound in the mobo. Could it be a virus?

A:Possibility of a virus?

Sometimes if your computer hangs and you press a few keys, the keyboard buffer will fill and cause some beeps. I don't suspect a virus given this info.

Well my parents computer got a huge virus on it a while a go and they took it into get it fixed. It seemed to be working fine but since I know a little about computers I knew that there was too much junk and stuff on it. I formated it and put windows 98SE back on it but after awhile I got an exploer problem and windows didn't load. So i formated again and put windows XP on it. It works alot better just slow because we need more RAM. I ran a norton anti-virus check and nothing came up. So i thought that problem was fixed, but it wasn't now I get a message saying "some symantec product settings have been changes by an unauthorized program. this can indicate that an attacker or virus is attempting to diable your protection." Then it goes on about your settings will be changed back and you need to restart you computer. Click ok to do so. I click ok but nothing happens. the computer still boots fine but the message still comes up. WHAT DO I DO?
Thanks

So a user was using his computer, and definitely has some infection.

I have used Malware Bytes, updated definitions, and it scans, removed a few items, still have issues.

Ran Symantect AntiVirus scan, but no luck.

All or majority of the files have been switched to hidden, no start menu files, desktop icons, no folders under Documents and Settings, etc. I have selected show hidden files and folders, and can see everything.

Google Chrome will not load at all, only Internet Explorer 8. Also, I here advertisements and random music play in the background...there's definitely something going on here. Right now RootRepeal is running in the background for a report...but I am sure I won't know what to do with it after that. I have also ran ATF Cleaner and CCleaner...

I looked in the processes on Task Manager, but nothign looked like it didn't belong. I ended a few, but the problem continuted.

This one is tricky, I have removed hundreds of Rouge AntiVirus software, but this one is stumping me.

Any suggestions?

Windows XP Professional, up to date
Core 2 Quad CPU

Hi, got a computer with two hard drives, and both acting funny, Cannot reinstall win98SE on either of them. The OS had stopped functioning. Is there a DOS virus scan that fits on 1.44 floppies? Can I just Repartion the HD's including the fdisk/mbr command? Would that eliminate any possibilities of any virus being on the HD? There is no important data on the disks.

A:repartition to kill all possibility of virus?

If you can, then running the fdisk and fdisk /mbr should eliminate all traces of most viruses. The ones that it wouldn't get rid of would be those rare hardware destroying ones.

This method is usually the last resort, as it will get rid of all info on your system, one step below writing zeros to your hard drive. But since you have no important data to lose, go for it.

If you want to go the whole hog of writing zeroes to your hard drive, which effectively restores it to factory condition, then go to the website of the Hard drive manufacturer, and look for the software tool there.

I got a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium from a close friend, who has unfortunately not taken good care of it. I am myself barely literate in dealing with such issues, but a significant step up from the original user.

The relevant history is:

Frequent crashes, with blue screen.
Check disk seemed to work fine. After it booted up, I copied the user files (not previously backed up) to an external drive, updated the AV (with virus definitions completely out of date) and started a scan. I got a blue screen.
As I was copying files to external drive, the AV did spot several files with viruses. That's my only indication that there are viruses on this machine.
I get the Windows Defender message box: "Application failed to initialize: 0x.... A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start service, restart your computer or search help and support for how to start service manually. [There is a McAfee AV on it, so I do not know if the Windows Defender issue is with that.]

As I write this, I am trying to rerun the AV, but am less than confident it will last. So, I am looking for advice on what the next steps might be. I have managed to get the user data (documents folder, Eudora data files) off on an external drive. Also, I do have recovery CD, etc. - if it needs to be rebuilt.

dvk01- you've been very helpful in past problems, Thanks again. But new problems are at hand. Different comp though.

First of all, a window that pops up constantly "Generic Host process for Win32 services" blah blah blah has encountered a problem.

Second, svchost.exe-application error "the instruction at "0x00aa9eec" referenced memory at "0x00000000" memory could not be written, blah blah, terminate program....

My suspicion about the memory thing is a corel photoshop that came with the dell computer. It seems to pop up when it runs. So i deleted it just now, but no news as to if it affected it. McAfee didn't stop this if it is a virus, and I'm pretty sure that my java is up to date. Was unaware if I downloaded anything bad, I'm pretty picky about downloading virtually anything. HJT log follows. Thanks for the help in advance.

P.S. All applications are running on startup, and unfortunately no restore points are available that do any good.

Hi, I've been confused as to whether I've been experiencing a virus on my computer.Originally, I was redirected away from google occasionally - sometimes going to the proper site, sometimes giving me a redirected site. After running a few virus scans (Hitman Pro, Housecall), I managed to stop the redirection for the computer session. However, after a reboot of the computer, the google redirect symptom sometimes suddenly occurs again. After attempting to create virus logs, I have become convinced that I'm now infected due to my inability to run the GMER scan. The GMER scan either freezes on a file or shuts down my computer. Reading some other threads, I followed the instructions asking others to just post their other available logs into this forum.Does this have any connection to a similar, seemingly less severe, virus I was infected with last year? You aren't going to want to hear this, but no new CPU in that system will make much of a difference.......and I doubt you will be able to "feel" any difference at all IF you can find parts for it. Now of course when I tried to authenticate it wouldn't let me, hitting cancel after realizing what I had done it proceeded to install this very very basic version of windows 7 on the computer. I found my xp full version cd but can't downgrade because there was no previous version of windows installed and hence no windows.old file I can use. I've come to the end of my tether. And I apologise, this is a long one, but I really can't solve it! I'm running out of hair to pull out!

A friend of mine brought around her computer which stopped working after her boyfriend was on there one day - he's known for downloading unsafe files (usually at the behest of someone who calls himself a techie but sort of lost his stride after dos). The problem is that it starts to boot up, the screen flickers black over and over, until the computer restarts itself and it all goes again. Usually doesn't even make it to Windows, but if it does, then there's weird black pixels, or letters are a bit garbled, and I even saw the white "o" in "Windows" disappear - but the shadow stayed perfectly in place as if the o was a layer just taken off!

Safe mode works perfectly fine. It just takes absolutely ages to boot up.

Before I get too into it, she's running XP home, sp2, P4 2.8ghz, 512mb ram, and I reckon the video was a Geforce4 440mx. It's only from 2004, so it's not all that old.

I've since read that this sort of symptom is generally a video card thing, and when I get home (I'm at work) I am going to test out one of our old cards in there. However, if you read on, this still doesn't make any sense.

I assumed it was viral, so popped on Antivir and got nothing of interest.

So, I tested booting up her hdd on my machine. It still showed the same symptoms, so I... Read more

A:I've eliminated every possibility - does anyone have any ideas?

I would remove the video card and reinsert it. sound like a hardware issue to me and not the drive.

Greetings,

The other day i received a phone call from a friend, who claimed they clicked something and now the computer was dead.

I drove out and found the computer infected with security tool. The item that suprised me was that the operating systems was Vista premium 64 bit edition.

To make a long story short i was able to remove the infection with malware bytes.

I also did a scan with Spybot S&D, also SuperAnti Spyware.

All scans turned out clean once i removed some items with malwarebytes.

I also ran a scan from ESET and the scan turned up nothing.

I ran ADSspy, and deleted two entires realated to the recylce bin.

Once finished I applied all immunizations from spybot search and destory, as well as javacools spyware blaster. Also i updated their Anti-Virus (McAfee... yuck). A final note was i installed Microsoft security Essentials, i might as well test it on more compuetrs than just mine.

The computer seems fine, my question is

Do root kits exist for 64 bit operating systems and if so, what tool should i run to try and find this.

Note: This computer is not at my disposal, this will be something i may check on the weekend.

Quickly just some issues I have faced when I followed your instructions.
-DDS did not install as it said that my system (WinXP 64) was not compatible
-GMER did not have all the boxes available (Only services, registry and files were non-greyed)

The suspicious .exe is xeuiwe.exe, I cannot find it using search, nor kill the process in msconfig but can kill after boot using Task Manager, it also taking up 30% of my CPU. An older scan using MBam said it removed Holita. Running a scan using Ad-Aware.

A week ago, while playing a WoW, the screen goes black and a moment later it looks like it is snowing red and blue dots. A second later and the display returns but all of the textures are in the wrong positions and torn in different locations.

Eventually booting up would cause the same thing to occur from the BIOS screen onward. I can't get a recognizable display to even work in windows now. My first guess was of course that the video card had went bad, yet it was less then a year old. The whole machine is.

I've already hooked up a new moniter with the same results. I've also put ina different PCI express video card, the problem was a bit different with a different card but still unmanagablle. Letters and numbers would display on the screen but would be of different colors and would periodically change. Say for example: The word "Number" would switch between "Number" and "Jumber". The first letter would alternate between N and J.

What would cause this to happen? It dosn't sound like a video issue at all at this point unless the PCI Express slot has went bad but different color numbers and alternating letters and numbers dosn't seem to fall anywhere in that catagory? Am I looking at a mobo or maybe a CPU problem?

A:Odd Mobo issue, possibility?

this could be hard to isolate. Simplify by removing everything except the video card, ram, and mobo w/ CPU.

then POST. if you still have issues it is your mobo if you have swapped video cards.

-I was already using my pc's hdmi port to connect it to my tv monitor.
-I then purchased a wacom citniq 24hd and noticed there wasnt a 2nd port to connect it with.
-I purchased a graphics port, thinking the built in hd port on it would provide a 2nd hd outlet, along with the pc's one.
- it turns out it overided the pc's port so i was just left with the one port once agin
- this forced me to use the unfavourable altrnative- the dvi connection

just found out 10 minutes ago the wacom isnt showing colour on the screen now, my pc no longer recognises the device!

please help! my illustrating career is sort of depending on this right now!

A:Is there any possibility of using two hdmi ports from my pc

Using an addon card will almost always disable the onboard gpu. You could simply purchase a video card that has two HDMI ports. Or you could simply use the DVI port. The only difference between the HDMI port and the DVI port is that the HDMI port also supports audio. The video signal (quality) is the same as they are both a digital signal.

I have a decent Win Vista machine that the Windows Compatibility app said I could install Win 7.

However I use Win Vista Home Premium 32b. Can I upgrade on the same machine to Win 7 Professional 32b?

Will I run into any problems? How long should it take and are there any possible issues that may come up?

A:Win Vista Upgrade Possibility

You will be fine.

I would take the upgrade advisor to double check. If you are approved just follow the easyinstuctions for the install. You have to buy another key, however.

But after that you will love the system, I do.

Well, I have been under the impression that people are spying on me..I don't know if it's through an installed program..or if there is some kind of tracking device or something that connects to my internet and follows it..but either way, I want to make sure that's not the case.

Currently, I am monitoring the remote addresses in TCPview, and was wondering if there are supposed to be a bunch of different IPs and what not?  I can post a picture, but I don't know if that would be a detriment to my security.

Process Explorer gave no indication as to there being any malicious programs all receiving a 0 score from VirusTotal, save for a few processes with no score (System Idle Processes and Interrupts)  Neither of which I think are malicious, yet still somewhat skeptical about interrupts.

Currently using Malware Bytes Anti-Rootkit right now to see if that is the issue.  So,for now, I'm just keeping updated on the situation and asking for any other suggestions.

The first question was (seeing as it as in the middle of the post and may have forgot) is  that I was wondering if there are supposed to be a bunch of different IPs and what not?

Edit:  As of now Facebook is viewing that thread..it's just weird, because people seem to make reference to me a lot of the time over really obscure things that I would browse and such.

I know in previous versions of Windows, you can send a magic package and use the WOL feature, however as far as I know this doesnt work with windows 8 because of fast boot.

You'll have to be patient with me here because my computer knowledge is minimal and I am incapable of performing the most rudimentary tasks.

I always have the latest free versions of Zonealarm and Avast, and both show nothing suspicious. I have taken online tests that scan my ports and these have given me the result that I have nothing to worry about.

Yesterday my computer was making a lot of 'vr-vm...vr-vm...vr-vm' noises whenever I was online so I did a Netstat -an to check what connections were established. The ports on my computer were all safe ones, but in my panic and computer retardation I read into the external addresses I was connected to, and there were ones starting with '69' and '87', and googling those numbers came up with ports that were traditionally used by attackers.

Since these were external addresses, is it a mere coincidence that some of the addresses started with these numbers? Do I have anything to worry about? Help.

A:Possibility I've been hacked / I'm being monitored in some way

I dont understand your post: you said you googled for the ip addresses and came up with port numbers?

I sometimes go to http://cqcounter.com/whois/ and type in ip addresses to see where they are located.

Other than this, everything seems to look good, but this program doesn't have themes you can change. So basically is there a chance I can use an original shell32.dll files for example and have this organizer program use those files, while everything else uses the custom shell32.dll? Or are there any other solutions anybody can think of? Hopefully this is in the best possible section... There were several areas I could have put it.

Thanks in advance anyways!

I ran AVG the other day and it brought up trojan backdoor infections and put them in the virus vault, but I don't think all of the infection is out of the computer. I have ran AVG again, nothing. Spybot search and destroy, again brought up nothing, and I've ran Malwarebytes Anti Malware, and again, nothing. I am running on Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. Thank for your time.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Hello!

I was not entirely sure where to post this topic so I chose this forum seeing as it seemed the place to put it.
Anyways my mom is not the most technologically smart person in the world, and she knows nothing of phishing attacks.
I literally just caught her like 15 minutes ago filling in information to a "WalMart Gift Card" site. She did this
by using the Bing! search engine, searching WalMart, and clicking on the "sponsored" link that said "Official WalMart"
website. After this she said she filled in information, and decided to stop because it asked for her cell phone
number. Being the paranoid generalized anxiety disordered person I am, I got really worried that she might have given
more information that she was willing to tell me. (She claims she only gave her address and name, but I don't believe her,
as well as don't believe her when she told me it was the first time she ever did this sort of thing). So, my question is,
is there any possibility of identity theft? Should I be worried? I know that some websites can retrieve information without
having a new page loaded or a continuation of the "information process" (although she did hit the continue button anyways).
Thanks to anyone who helps me out!
Andrew

I would think it would be fairly easy to add things to the default ISO with programs like nlite or even Microsoft's Windows Automated Installation Kit. Using a Pirated install image is one of the easiest ways to compromise your system. Be carful what you link to or talk about or you could end up violating the forum rules against discussing pirating windows.

Last spring, I bought Windows 7 through the website for my old Compaq laptop. That laptop is now useless, and I've had to move on to a new Dell that currently runs on Windows Vista.

I would hate to wast $60 on an operating system I've used for only a year. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a way to move my Windows 7 to my new laptop without having to rebuy the whole thing.

A:Possibility of moving Windows 7 to new computer?

That copy is yours to use forever now. You can always use it without having to rebuy it. This is, as per the EULA, so long as you run the 1 product key to 1 computer. If the Compaq is deactivated (or wiped, etc.), then you again have that product key for use.

What form did you buy Win 7 in? (OEM, Full Retail, Upgrade, download???)
Do you still have the product key?
Or am I misunderstanding you that you are more concerned about transferring the system with files, etc intact?

A:PCIE SSD possibility for HP Envy TS 15j-101ni

You do not have any M.2 slot on your computer. There is a slot for an older type mSATA mSSD but all it can do is "accelerate" a mechanical hard drive. It will be useless in conjunction with a SATA 2.5 inch SSD because the Intel Rapid Storage software used for acceleration will not let one SSD accelerate another SSD. Nor can the mSSD be the boot drive if a hard drive or SSD is installed in the main 2.5 inch bay. You already have the fastest configuration possible for your machine.  Your Service Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.
