Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

Q: Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

I have changed the settings on my virtual memory to 3500 and also upgraded to 2G of RAM. Yet I am still getting the warning that I am low on virtual memory.

The bigger issue is that programs randomly crash every few hours. Restarting the computer resolves the issue but only temporarily.

The programs that I run daily are basic, Firefox, Outlook and sometimes QuickBooks. The crash happens regardless of what I have open.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As long as you have 2gb of RAM, you can disable the Virtual Ram.

Go to Control panel > System > Advanced tab > under Performance click on Settings > Advanced tab > under Virtual Ram click on Change > first, click on Custom Settings and set them both to Zero > Set > then click on No Paging File > Set

Hi there,

I really hope that somebody can help.

For the past few months my PC has been running very slow and this is especially noticeable on startup! Music quite often will distort/computer will slow right down to the point where it crashes and reboots itself!! I will quite often receive a warning balloon in the bottom-right hand corner of the desktop saying 'virtual memory low'.

Please could somebody provide some assistance...it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi, welcome to TSF

See here for details on posting your full system specs.

To increase your virtual memory, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Advanced tab and then Settings in the Performance section. Click the Advanced tab and then Change under the Virtual Memory section. What are the initial and maximum settings?

Also, right-click the C: drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to see how much free space is left on the drive.

Have you defragged the drive lately?

Hi,
Each and every time I boot up my computer it advises me that my virtual memory is low. I open up task manager and 100% of my CPU is being used. They look liek aanoir.exe, riwatoji.exe, vhaweiun.exe........I'm just making those up, but it's really just a random jumble of letters with .exe after it. I have used adaware and spybot and norton and cwshredder and they still come back everytime I reboot my computer. I downloaded Hijack this in february....do I need an updated version or should I just run it and send you the log?
Thanks for your help, my computer is a mess

Let's see a log.

This is the latest version of Hijack This: http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Let it extract to Program Files

Close out any open browsers
Launch the program
Hit "do a system scan only"
When that finishes, hit "save log"
The log will open in Notepad
Copy & paste that log into this thread

Do not fix anything yet

I can't tell if you can rcv the new email I'm writing in regards to this issue. So instead of going into the old thread, I have copied our last convo into this email. I downloaded the link you sent and did a system scan. The last two times I have tried to copy and paste the log into this page, the email has not gone through....I think it is because the log is SO HUGE. So I have copied and pasted it into several emails.
I know I have to delete all the bad stuff in system 32 folder, but is there a way to do it such that I don't have to check EVERY SINGLE BOX next to a each system 32 bad file?
Pls help me

32 bit can see 4 but only use about 3.25 gigs.

Low on memory warnings can also be from low pagefile, or Hibernation file both of which depend on HD space.

Hi there,

My laptop has been crashing randomly for no apparent trigger. But a noticeable cycle is ~ every 12 days.

Every time is the same error: "faulty hardware corrupted page"

So I try using memtest86 but with no luck (10 passes all gd)

Then I use windows debugging tool to read memorydump. It said is a 'hardware error'

But I am not sure am I using the tool correctly, also there are too many stuff I have no idea....

So if anyone can help analyse the memory dump is greatly appreciated

Please see attachment for memory dump, it is create using the tool provided in post "BSOD - Posting Instructions"

Hey there, I'm having random BSoD's, anywhere from a couple hours to a day or so. Not exactly sure when they started happening, since the computer used to reboot itself (I changed that so I could see the stop error). Here's a small history of some problems I'd been having prior to the BSoD's:I had been using Nintendo's WiFi USB Connector (by Buffalo), and had many problems with it, mostly with not connecting to the internet (using the Nintendo Wii and DS), but my computer also randomly froze completely (no reset, no blue screen, nothing), with no indication of why. Usually it was just sitting on the desktop with nothing running but my Firewall and basic utilities (see under Software). This happened at random times, usually at night, and had happened while I was at the computer as well. I talked to Nintendo, and they told me not to use Spy-bot, Ad-aware, or AVG. I took them off (although I really didn't want to), and I still had the problems. So I am in the process of sending that back, and have completely uninstalled all of the software included with the USB WiFi connector. I had the exact same problem with a 3rd-party WiFi USB connector (WiFiMAX) before this. BTW the Nintendo tech Representative I spoke to was kind of a prick (you just don't whisper F**k! on a customer call!) and didn't seem to know what he was talking about (sounded like he was reading off of a screen). Here's the next piece of history:I upgraded the RAM from 256MB to 2GB (maximum allowed on ... The STOP error occurred while playing Diablo II (barely even 1 minute), and stated that LVMVDrv.sys was at fault. the information is a little vague and i apologize for that but i if i can provide more information please tell me how.

i have had a dell xps 630 computer bought from futureshop for awhile. i know i should of returned it but for some reason i did not.

it is a vista home edition preinstalled.

that being said i believe i had to force a shutdown during the initial computer update. so i theorize that is where most of the problems are coming from.

the first issue was "superfetch has stopped working" but i managed to fix that by deleting the prefetch and chkdsk.

now the only issue that plagues me is randomly i will get the blue screen of death stating a memory crash. after the physical memory dump it will restart, take me to a black screen and give me options to start windows normally etc. i have tested my memory and it should be fine.

it happens seemingly out of no where. so i am wondering if there is anything i could do.

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely don’t want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you aren’t using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely aren’t using the virtual memory and the tweak won’t slow your computer. It doesn’t speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Don’t let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

why is the slow virtual memory working before i ran out of good and fast memory stick?

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

About a week ago I got a popup from Norton Internet Security that said "We've detected an intrusion attempt from such and such IP address with the DeepThroat Trojan. This attack was blocked."

I didn't like the way that sounded so I did research on that trojan, but from what I read on the internet it didn't sound like I had it.

I ran scans with:
SpyBoy
AdAware
Norton Anti-Virus
Panda ActiveScan

And all came up clean.

Then some people said AVG was a good anti-virus, so I downloaded that, ran it, it came up clean, and then I deleted it because it slowed my computer down like crazy (constant 100% CPU usage, etc.)

Ever since then, I've been getting weird warnings and weird random program crashes.

I downloaded Firefox 3 the other day and it crashes a LOT. Some of the other programs I run have been randomly crashing, too (stock trading and charting programs).

I decided I was going to do a system restore to a month ago, but when I went into System Restore, ALL MY RESTORE POINTS WERE GONE!! I know I didn't delete them, so I'm wondering if some malware I picked up did.

I use Firefox for browsing 99.9% of the time so I usually feel safe surfing the web.

I'm using WinXP SP2.

I swapped out the RAM and I haven't had a problem since.

So feel free to lock this thread :D

My laptop, Packard Bell Easynote TM81, has been crashing and restarting by itself, and when it does, the ENTIRE system will not respond. So I try to format the entire thing, and after a few days, when I have gotten used to it, it comes up with a screen for 1 second, and all I could read was "system memory dump" and "CPU memory dump". So during this month, I have had to format the entire thing OVER AND OVER. I can't reinstall the system, because I am using a laptop, which comes with no Windows 7 CD. Please help!

A:Laptop crash no response memory dump crash

It honestly sounds like a heat related issue to me, if you could follow the instructions here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

one of the bsod readers here could help you.
Or perhaps even myself if I ever get the time to reinstall the debugging software on my system.

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

Why i don't have C:\pagefile.sys on my computer since when formated? If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?

A:query about memory or virtual memory

<<Why i don't have C:\pagefile.sys on my computer since when formated?>>

Is it on a different partition?

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I got crashlogs to provide if needed, but something tells me that Ntoskrln.exe is the cause of this and whatever i try has failed so far.

Games that crashes are related to the Unreal 4 engine so basicly any game from that graphicsmotor is crashing randomly.

Anyways i hope someone will be willing to help me solve this problem since my pc is new and i cant play a single game without my hopes of winning gets crushed by a random crash and then im dead when reconnecting.

For some strange reason, all of a sudden whenever i leave my laptop on during the day while im at school and when i open it back up when i get back, i always have a windows alert that: "Your system is low on virtual memory and is updating the memory page"
Also, i am getting the BSOD a lot lately and there is no apparent reason for this. One time, i was playing UT2004 and my laptop just completely froze on me. Whenever this happens i have ot hold the power button on my laptop to manually turn it off, and whenever i try to to boot again, i dont even see the "toshiba or Windows" opening screens and i just end up sitting at a black screen forever, usually having to wait at least a 1/2 hour before the laptop will succesfully boot.
lastly, i have recently started using a program, netlimiter, to control my upload/download rates through my computer and hte program is having a lot of time running, it usually gives a message that "NetLimiter has encountered a problem and needs to close"
If anyone out there can help me out on any of these things, i would greatly appreciate it, and THANK YOU in advance. These forums have never let me down.

I got a little yellow popup at the bottom of my screen on the taskbar earlier saying Windows is low on virtual memory or something.

What caused this, and how do I fix it?

A:Low on virtual memory

Hi vicedice

I've put some links below for you to look at. The error message you are seeing can sometimes be completely harmless - you might simply be running too many things at one time, and the virtual memory setting is set too low. There have been a few programs that have caused this error in the past, but most of those errors have long since been fixed by updates from their vendors (a few Symantec products come to mind).

So have a look - especially at the Microsoft article at the top of the list.

http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/gets...cproblems.mspx
http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/desktop/vtkb1550.htm
http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can...n_windows.html
_________________

In my experience, however, I have to say that in a fair percentage of systems receiving this error, the cause is malware infection = often multiple infections - sometimes complicated by rootkits. [You see, malware can take up considerable system resources, too].

To rule out that, try using the 5-Step Security Checklist http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=15968
And also scan for rootkits with Rootkit Revealer http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...tRevealer.html and Blacklight http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html

Best of luck

A box keeps appearing in the bottom left hand corner of my screen saying, your computer is low on virtual memory and also when I'm searching the web a box comes up saying Warning; Unresponsive Script. A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Is there any way to fix this problem.I really don't know if there is a start up program or something else in my PC taking up all the virtual memory. Please can someone help me with this problem?Thank you.

A:Virtual Memory

To address the 'virtual memory' warning you could free up some space on your C:drive(default location of paging file) and increase the 'paging file' size to one and a half times( microsoft's recommendation) the total amount of RAM you have installed.

To set the paging file size in XP : right-click "my computer" on "start menu'>properties>Advanced> Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory.click on Change.

Hope this gets you on the right road.

Appoligies if this is the wrong space for this to be.
Ok, im usually good at computers but theres this one problem i cant fix, i just wondered if anyone knew what is was. I am using Windows XP, and my computer whenever it feels like it keeps freezing, i.e. mouse dont more keyboard and screen lock and the only way is to push the reboot button. If i was to guess i think its to do with my amount of RAM 256mb, and somthing to do with the virtual memory causing it do just freeze. My first answer to this was to get more RAM, or does it sound like somthing diffrent to you?
Thank in advance

A:virtual memory help

First to see how much memory you have, click Start>>Control Panel. Double- click System.
On the General tab, total memory will be listed near the bottom.

To enlarge the area set aside for virtual memory. To do that, click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click System.
Select the Advanced tab. Under Performance, click Settings. Select the Advanced tab.
Find Virtual Memory at the bottom of the window, and click Change.
Click the option button next to "Custom Size."
Increase it to atleast 1.5 times your memory size.

The maximum should be three times your memory.
If you continue to have trouble, raise the maximum.
Keep raising it until you no longer get the message.

If you max it out buy some more MEMORY IS CHEAP

hi everyone i have windows 7 x64 with core i5 , 4gb ram , and radeon hd6570 video : and i had an advice to turnoff the paging file to improve the performance : is that truth

A:about virtual memory

Hello Zoro,

That's absolutely false. In fact, in would most likely hurt performance by turning it off. Some programs actually require the page file to run properly no matter how much RAM you have installed. You could move the page file to be located on a separate physical hard drive than the one your Windows 7 is installed on for some better performance though.

Here are some safer ways to help improve the performance of Windows 7 instead.

Hi Mayflower. Before trying System Restore, you may want to do a little house cleaning .... if you haven't done so yet. You may know of some of this. But, Win XP also has a little known Temp folder that is located in "Documents & Settings" that can build up files and slow your PC also.

Try this:

Cleaning Computer Using Internet Options

Go to your “Control Panel”
Open “Internet Properties”
Left-click “Delete Files”
Place a “Checkmark” in box next to Delete all offline content
Left-click “Ok”
Left-click “Delete Cookies”
Left-click “Ok”
Left-click “Clear History”
Left-click “Yes”
Close to “Desktop”
________________________________________________________________

Cleaning Program Temp Files

Note: Many do not know of this Temp folder. It can become a monster that
will slow performance …. just as your Tempory Files, Cookies, & History will.

Open “My Computer”
Open “Local Disc C”
Open “Documents & Settings”
Open your administrator’s folder. (Possibly in your name or Default)
Open “Local Settings”
Open “Temp” (Note: You might want to create a shortcut for this folder)

3 Different Methods Can Be Used:

(Note: Not all may Delete. Most will. This is normal)

Either:
Edit – Select All (Upper Tool Bar)
File – Delete – Yes (Upper Tool Bar)

Or:
Hold down “Ctrl” Key and …….
Select each file individually (while holding down key)
Right-click in a highlighted area
Left-click “Delete”

Or:
Right-click each one at a tim... Read more

A good rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2.5 times RAM size. U may have another program running in the background that has a memory leak. Scan for spyware/adware and go from there. Use Ad-aware or Spybot-Search & Destroy or better yet, use Spy Sweeper like I do at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3263.html

Those settings should be fine - if Windows crashes you won't be able to get a kernel dump with a paging file on C: that small, but for a desktop machine that should be fine (you can always change the setting and try again a second time if it's really necessary). In fact, since you have a properly sized paging file on E:, I'm not sure there's a need for one on C: if you're going to keep it that small.
