Thinkpad fingerprint update messed with logon screen

Q: Thinkpad fingerprint update messed with logon screen

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 with Windows 7 professional 32-bit. Previously, my login screen would display a "fingerprint logon" option and my username concurrently. I just finished installing an update for the Lenovo fingerprint software using the Lenovo update utility, and now the logon screen will only display the "fingerprint logon" option until I click on "other credentials" or "switch user". I liked my old login screen better and both a system restore and an attempted re-installation of the old software failed to bring it back.

I would like to know if anyone knows a registry hack or something to keep the giant icon of a finger off my login screen (similar to this one: http://www.blogsdna.com/wp-content/u...gin-screen.png), and confined to tiny icons, like these : http://www.blogsdna.com/wp-content/u...windows-xp.jpg with the option of logging on with either a password or the fingerprint reader without any additional clicks.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad fingerprint update messed with logon screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. During the procedure a screen showed that Dell Access had to be removed before Windows 10 could be installed.
It was removed, and everything else went smoothly.
Now during logon, at the login screen, the system will take a while to initialize, and say "Failure to initialize". Luckily I am able to login using a password.
I want to use the fingerprint reader to login. Dell says that this system have no issues with upgrading to Windows 10, but not now. So how can I solve this problem?
I will like to do either the following:
1. Get the fingerprint reader working.
2. If it cannot work, I want the logon screen to stop trying to initialize and just use password to logon.

Also, I am getting 2-3 nos of the same user on the login screen. There is only 1 user on this computer but I see mostly 2 but sometimes 3 of the same on the lower left of the logon screen. I also want to remove the extras. Not an issue, but I think it may be related to the above as well.

Thanks.

Did you just recently install Windows Spring Creators Update (Version 1803)? It is known to mess with the fingerprint system. The solution is to reinstall the driver. You say your driver is up to date. But did you install it just now, or did you check the version number only? If you just checked the version number, I would recommend as a first step to reinstall the fingerprint driver.

I have had my Thinkpad P70 for about 6 months now. I would periodically not be able to use the fingerprint reader to logon. The LED would flash but the system didn't recognize anything. I could choose "switch user" and choose the correct user and manually put in my password. Everything would come up just fine. The next time i booted the fingerprint reader would work fine. As this annoyed me because it was intermentent i kept checking for updates on Windows update and via the Lenovo app and would apply them everytime one was applicable to my configuration. Now about every 2-3 boots my system gets to the logon screen asking for a fingerprint scan and the system won't go past that screen. Most of the time the HD light flickers and sometimes the mouse moves, but never does it move further.  In an effort to isolate the issue i quite using the fingerprint reader and just used the user icon and typed in the password to see if that might correct the issue. Unfortunately it would still lock up at that point every 2-3 boots. Thinking i may have an issue with a user profile i started logging in with a different profile. Unfortunately the problem persists. I did have an update from Lenovo that updated the bios. I am not sure if my lock ups were happening before that or only after. Does anyone else have a similar issue? My configuration isP7032gb rami7-6700HQ processor 2.601GB Cyclone SSD2-1GB Crucial PCIe SSD I have run system diagnostics but every... Windows update caused this problem on 22-12-2008 and I noticed this error last week.

Problem with Video Driver :
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 Video Driver - 7.15.11.5682
This is the video driver version for my HP tablet(HP Website). But windows update installed the latest version(7.15.11.7770) from NVIDIA. From that time onwards, my touch screen stopped working.
I contacted HP care and they advised me to follow these steps.
1) Uninstall the latest driver and install the 7.15.11.5682 driver by giving the video driver (devicemanager ->display adapter -> Nvidia 6150 -> uninstall)
2) Bios Flash (they provided the software)
3) Calibrate
I am done with the first two steps but still my touch screen is not recognizing the pen. So I couldn't calibrate.
When I contacted the HP care again, they are telling it may be because of hardware failure. My notebook is working perfectly except this touchscreen problem.

Again they asked me to do the driver installation in safe mode.
(Add/Remove Programs -> Remove only display adapter)
Driver installed successfully but in device manager it is showing the latest version.
I tried two times, but couldn't help. I can't install the older driver. pls help.

This was an option update that i accidently installed without knowing what it was,

Intel Corporation - Display - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

It has messed up my resolution and i can no longer fit it to how i want, there are only 2 different screen resolutions i can use. Also, i cannot run applications such as YouCam that came with my Laptop + windows 7 beause i "do not have the VGA software" or something :/

I go to device manager and uninstall this, but everytime i turn on my laptop again, the screen resolution is still messed up and then the driver will install itself again.

I find this really annoying how i cant have my screen resolution back

I really hope someone can help

If you're "un-installing" the driver, you could try "rolling back" the driver.

Maybe this will give you the result you need.

You may want to move to the newer driver eventually, so hopefully you can find a more permanent solution.

After you roll it back, hide it from WU

Hi everybody,

this is my first post here so please don't bitch if I didn't hit the right place for my question

I am having a laptop here (DELL Studio 1735) on which Windows 7 runs in dual boot mode with the (originally) installed Vista, both Home Premium versions and working with the integrated Authentec AES2810 fingerprint reader with no problem.

My question is now, how can I get W7 to the same kind of logon screen, showing both this laptop's only user's password and fingerprint logon icon next to each other, like Vista does it?

In W7 those are different logon screens between which I can only "switch users", as if W7 considers the password logon with <Username> a different account than the fingerprint logon which it calls <Fingerprint>.

When I look into the W7 User Accounts though, there is just one user account, which is an Administrator type, just like in Vista. And in both OS, the fingerprints were registered under the only users account.

How can I tweak W7 like Vista here? Somewhere else I read the tip to do this through secpol.msc, but that exists in the Professional and Ultimate versions only, not HP.

Thanks for your time guys!

Ok...I have a Lenovo ThinkPad W500 notebook running Windows 7 64bit. It has an integrated fingerprint reader which uses AuthenTec TrueSuite. MY PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE FINGERPRINT READER HARDWARE, as it has the latest drivers and is detected by Windows. I am even able to register my fingerprint via Biometrics in the Control Panel. However, when I go to log into WIndows on a fresh startup, the option for fingerprint logon DOES NOT DISPLAY and there is no "Other Credentials" button that would allow me to navigate to the fingerprint logon. Here's the strange thing- if I do a simple logoff (without shutting down) then the fingerprint option appears on the logon screen and I can log in using my fingerprint. It is only when I power on the computer and first log in to Windows that I encounter this problem. Please help, as this used to not be a problem but suddenly started occurring, and I like using my fingerprint to log in.

I recently installed Adobe Premiere Elements and there was a conflict with the biometrics device on my HP laptop. Anyhow, I decided to just do away with the thing all together. I never use it anyhow. The company that makes the drivers quit supporting the device a long time ago so, there aren't any updates. I'd rather type in passwords anyhow.

So, I disabled the driver and all related software I could find. Problem is, I am still left with the fingerprint log on icon when I boot the machine. Anybody know how to get rid of it?

Fingerprint reader is by Validity Sensors Inc.
Software was VeriSoft or Digital Persona
All on my HP Pavilion dv8

As well as disabling the driver and un-installing any reference to VeriSoft and Digital Persona, I tried editing Local Group Policy to not allow the use of biometrics. Nothing I have tried so far has worked.

Maybe edit/remove a registry key or some other such thing?

Hold the Shift key and click the power button on the lower right corner of the login screen.
Continue holding shift and choose restart.

This should bring you to a startup options menu where you can choose boot options such as safe mode with networking.

Attempt to run the system restore again, if it fails try running 'dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' from an administrative command prompt.
Let me know of the result.

Hello Friends,

Similar issue was solved in this topic: problem changing windows 8.1 lock screen image but it was only "similar". Let me descrive:

I made a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (system was not preinstalled on my Dell Vostro). I set bitlocker, biometrics (fingerprint logon), I choosed LOCK SCREEN and everything worked fine. Until Windows 8.1 Update 1 was installed from Windows Update.

After this update, my lock screen is black. It seems not to be corrupted, because I have all 4 icons (at left-bottom there are two icons - WiFi and something, at right bottom there are two icons - keyboard language and power). Nothing more except an arrow in a circle in the left side of the place where normally there should be an user name and password field.

If I swipe finger on fingerprint reader, I'm logged into desktop without any issues. Everything works normally, except that I cannot change Logon Screen and Lock Screen.

If I go to personalize, I can pick up any image and it is being show in my personalization preview, but even after restart the logon and lock screens are black, like this image is not applied to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData (but I temporary replaced ownership and checked - new Lockscreen_B and _C and _D are created with the correct image when I change image to a different one). I rolled back ownership to SYSTEM.

I googled out everything I could: SFC /SCANNOW, Dism with three different parameters, I made some adjustments in regist... Read more

hello. i recently installed Windows 7 on my HP 8510p laptop and I noticed that while i can normally login using either a password or my fingerprint when I first switch on the computer, i cannot use the fingerprint reader after i put my laptop to sleep and then restart it. when i press to power button to restart after sleep, i am shown the welcome screen with the Fingerprint icon and my username below it and below that it says:

"Fingerprint unlock. Scan an enrolled finger on the fingerprint reader to unlock."
and then i have to press "Other Credentials" and login using my password, while the fingerprint reader doesn't work.

I searched for solutions on the net and found that other users had this problem as well. no solution however. i read somewhere (and confirmed it) that when i try to login with a false password, i can then login using the fingerprint successfully.

Anyone has any clues, please help!

Hi

To be honest, I don?t know exactly what?s going wrong with the fingerprint procedure but I guess this can be related to wrong update to Win 8.1
Probably you did not follow exactly the update procedure which was recommended by Toshiba.

Here you can find the Update to Windows 8.1 Toshiba EU website:
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/

and here you can find the [Step-by-Step Instructions to update to Windows 8.1 |http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/]

You have to follow exactly these steps in order to get the notebook working properly.

Therefore I recommend you to set the notebook back to factory settings and to repeat the whole update process once again following the +Step-by-Step Instructions+

Hello,  I used the Lenovo-Tool to automatically check what needs to be updated and followed the recommendations. It was a NVIDIA-Driver update for security reasons and about 10 - 15 other updates. What I noticed late was that there was also a Bios update recommended and selected. However, I tursted in Lenovos automatic update meachnism. The updates ran trough, despite the NVIDIA-Update which was marked by a red cross. Also the Bios update started and mentioned not to turn off the computer. A Dos-Box under my Windows 10 appeared and disappeared and the computer wanted to shut down - which was happening in a normal way. But now the screens were black, the computer was off. After a while, I switched it on again - the fan went on again but nothing happened.  Which means: - The screen is black all the time (as if it was broken, no text is displayed)- External screens, connected via dockingstation or HDMI are black- Computer did not display anything when connecting a bootable USB-Stick with free DOS- Interestingly, the computer is warm and the fan sometimes changes its speed. What can I do now? I assume that something went wrong with the BIOS-Update. Is there anything I can do on my own? Can this problem be fixed by Lenovo? Thank you for your replies! Best regards Nic4

Good day and welcome to the community. If you're unable to change anything in the BIOS, then there is a supervisor/admin password set. The only way to remove it is to know it. There are no workarounds, backdoors, or master passwords. If the password is not available the only option is to contact Service to discuss a system board replacement.Regards.

Since the mouse is working OK, there is a good chance that the cable is OK but I cannot be sure. Anyone has any ideas on where I should go next?  It appears that the TouchChip fingerprint processor is working but something else is failing.

I believe there are 2 parts involved: the portion of the cable that goes to the reader, and there is a biometric corocessor on the motherboard.  One of those is probably the problem

I ordered a brand new Thinkpad Yoga 260, eveything is fine and I love the machine, except for the fingerprint reader which is not detected and not working. It looks like a hardware problem with the fingerprint reader :I have never seen him it blinkingit doesn't show up on device manager (and I already checked for hidden devices : nothing)it is activated into the BIOSno trace of a fingerprint option on Windows settings under accounts / connexion options (not sure of the naming in english as my Windows is in french)no more luck when trying to install the latest Synaptics FP driver from Lenovo :  a window opens, I click start and the window closes itself after 5 seconds, then nothing special is happening anymore. No error message, nothing. Is someone with a Thinkpad Yoga 260 having the same troubles or could be of any help ? Thanks !

A:Fingerprint reader not detected on new Thinkpad Yo...

Hi

I don't have that Thinkpad model, but for what I remember in some other model the Fingerprint reader was internally connected to an USB port.

You can check some programs like HWInfo and check where is the fingerprint reader plugged to see if Windows recognize there is a deviced plugged on it. It can also be interesting for you to grab the hardwareID to know the manufacturer of it.

Which Windows version are you using?
There is also some fingerprint drivers on the Yoga 260 support site for Win10 and Win7.

Maybe you can also give it a try.

Regards

After Intel Management Engine Firmware 10 [64]- v 12.0.47.1524 my machine has been having odd power issues.Sleep mode it drains the battery. If it starts on battery power, not plugged in, it bluescreens. It won't start while plugged in. I have to turn it on, wait for screen to activate, and then plug it in.  Too early, it never turns on, sits on a black screen.  Too late and it either shuts down due to low battery (if I leave in sleep mode) or bluescreens (if I had it shut down and the battery still has power).  Stop code is a different error each time.  (driver irql_less_or_not_equal, unexpected kernal mode trap, things of that nature)There's something up with how the machine receives power and it only affect startup.  Unplugging the machine will still allow it to run (haven't tested for how long, it's just not an instant bluescreen)Any way to roll back firmware?

After updating the bios of my x1 extreme to version 1.18 i get a blue screen from time to time. this never happend before to me in my life with any thinkpad... X1 EXTREME - BIOS 1.18

A:THINKPAD X1 EXTREME - BIOS UPDATE 1.18 - BLUE SCREEN

That is almost certainly a device driver issue, and is usually not related to the BIOS.       The best way to troubleshoot the problem is to locate the C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP file created by the blue screen, zip it up, and then upload to OneDrive etc. so it can be reviewed. Sometime the Windows event logs can help too, but the memory.dmp file works best. Best of luck,

Hello, Today I receaved my Thinkpad X1 Yoga 20JE and after I did a BIOS update the Yoga had a black screen. I followed the instructions of the BIOS update and the battery was fully loaded and the Yoga was connected to the power. Now the screen is black and the LED in the power button is blinking green. The yoga is warm on the backside so it must be running. But I can't restart when I longpress the power button and the battery is inside so i can't put it out.I also installed some other drivers with the Lenovo update tool and maybe windows did also update.what could I do to make everything running again? Did I brick the BIOS?

So, when you press and hold the power button, it doesn't shut off?  It is a new machine, almost certainly with a warranty.  Don't mess with it.  Call support

The FP reader does not work on my T450s under Windows 10, even though the drivers "Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)" are installed correctly.I can get into the Windows Hello Fingerprint Setup (snapshot below) but the FP reader doesn't do a thing.Following the steps suggested in Fingerprint-support-on-Windows-10-ThinkPad-T440-and-newer does not change anything. The notebook is brandnew and I didn't have Win 7 or 8 on it before for testing the FP reader, but the driver installed without any issues -- so I guess it's not a hardware problem. I'm happy for any suggestion.
