Why are Word and Excel and other files 'protected'?

Q: Why are Word and Excel and other files 'protected'?

You can't run a macro unless you do many settings changes.

WHY does microsoft STILL open file sin 'protected mode' - or whatever it's calleD?

Preferred Solution: Why are Word and Excel and other files 'protected'?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Why are Word and Excel and other files 'protected'?

Because macro viruses are still an issue.

Hi,

Recently, I'm having slow file loading while opening ms word files and excel files directly from windows explorer. It takes a minute to load, however it opens immediately if I open .doc files or .xls files directly from their application software. It also take a minute for MS Word and Excel software to shut down.

I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

Is there any way in which I can selectively export data from the Word form to the spreadsheet such that selected form fields data is exported to selected columns as row entries?

Hope my request makes sense.

where i work, there we have some Excel fiels that had been at one time protected with a password. only protected in the sense that you can't delete sheets, cells or create new sheets in the worksheet. it was protected by someone who has not worked here in some time. Now, the person so has been working on the file since, wanted to delete the contents of a sheet in the file, but can't because its password protected, the password is not known. anyway to find it?

Not really. But they are breakable. This can be ethically walking a thin line, so be careful. A lot of people won't even talk to such a request. I say be careful and you know your situation best.

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

A:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

A:Solved: Excel Password Protected Files

I am not sure if this will work, because I can only sometimes get that "...reserved by (name)" to pop up - don't know why.
But you can try two things - go to Tools, Options, Security, and click "Remove personal information from file properties on save", then go to General and change the name there, prior to saving or password protecting the file.

I just recently installed AVAST, and so far so good. One thing though, it tells me it has found over 1,300 files that it could not check because they are "pass-word" protected. If I did not do this, then how did this happen? My friend does not get this message on his computer. They are all under my documents/all users/.../sbrecovery.reg or .ini. Can I safely remove all of these?

Thank you!

A:AVAST has found over 1,300 files that are "Pass-word" protected.

Strictly a guess...but those files might be part of Spybot's vault mechanism, if you have Spybot installed.

Sbrecovery.ini and sbrecovery.reg are valid Spybot files, proper file paths.

I don't know why anyone uses the vault mechanism, I just delete anything found by Spybot.

Hi,

I have encountered this problem which is bugging me for days now.
I was just creating back ups of my files to a different location of my PC (diff. partition, to be exact), the usual copy and paste. After a few minutes, I got this error that says 123.xlsx cannot be copied because the file is missing. I decided to skip it and continue backing up other files. After copying, I tried to locate and open the 123.xlsx file. The file was there but upon opening and after entering the password, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." I have 3 files like this, all of which are password protected. So I'm assuming that the password protection of excel has something to do with it.

I have tried multiple excel recovery tools from google. Even the steps for recovering corrupted files from Microsoft website, none of them worked.

I'm using MS Excel 2013, windows 8.1 64 bit; if it helps.

Please, I'm desperate. The files are equal to months of work. ( I know, I know, i should back up my files more often.)

Best regards,

I have several password protected documents from an old crapped out computer that are done in a very old version of WordPerfect and I cannot open them up in my current computer's "Microsoft Works Word Processor". The ones that are not password protected open up fine, but the ones that have password protection bring up the following Windows message: "Works cannot open (said document). The file may be in use by another application, the file may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt". I have tried all other "converters" that are a part of my Microsoft Works Word Processor. A:Opening MS Excel, MS Word & .pdf files on a Mac

A few suggestions:

Visit this page to see if she can update her Office software.
Also, try the Office Open XML File Format Converter from Apple.
If that fails, and you don't want to use Open Office, you could save Word docs as RTF Rich Text files, and Excel files as CSV, comma seperated value files.

Are there any file extensions appended to your files...such as .ecc, .ezz, .exx, .CTBL, .CTB2, .XTBL, .encrypted, .vault, .HA3 or 6-7 length extension consisting of random characters?Did you find any ransom note? These infections are created to alert victims that their data has been encrypted and demand a ransom payment. Check your documents folder for an image the malware typically uses for the background note. Check the C:\ProgramData (or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data) for a random named .html, .txt, .png, .bmp, .url file. These are some examples.HELP_DECRYPT.TXT, HELP_DECRYPT.HTML, HELP_DECRYPT.URL, HELP_DECRYPT.PNGHELP_TO_DECRYPT_YOUR_FILES.bmp, HELP_TO_DECRYPT_YOUR_FILES.txt, HELP_RESTORE_FILES.txtHELP_TO_SAVE_FILES.txt, HELP_TO_SAVE_FILES.bmp, RECOVERY_KEY.txtDECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.TXT, DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.HTML, DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.URL

I have been using Windows 7 for about six months now, and have recently experienced a rather strange event when trying to access my Word and/or Excel documents. When I have opened either of these programs, and clicked on the small yellow file icon at the top to look at the available files, I get the normal list of those files, and can choose which one to open. However, occasionally after clicking the yellow "open" icon, the page is completely blank, that is to say none of my saved files are showing. After a time (usually about five or six minutes), the page loads and I see all these files so that I can then open the required one. If I go to Task Manager, nothing is showing as running, so I am at a loss why this should be. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful for their advice. Many thanks.

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

My problem is that when I link an Excel file with Word, I get a graph with grid lines behind it. How can I get rid of these grid lines? I'm not referring to the grid lines within the graph itself, but the grid lines behind the graph. It looks like a nice graph siting on an Excel spreadsheet with the cells behind it. I've fiddled around with it and gotten the cells to "shrink around it", but you can still see the cells around the edges of the graph.

I'd send the file, but this system wouldn't take a .xls file. If someone wants to look at my problem graph, I'd be happy to email the file.

Well, it appears our desktop has contracted something...Microsoft Office 2010 will not open any files as it states they are all corrupt. First, I've done a lot of searching on the internet and notice others are experiencing the same problem. Some of them are stating they get a screen asking for a ransom, apparently the Cryptolocker virus. We are not getting this message.

I've tried repairing files though a lot of different avenues found on the internet, but none have worked.

I thought possibly the files were being corrupted while attempting to open them, so I copied a few files that I hadn't tried opening to my laptop running the same version of Office, but they appeared corrupted on it as well. I tried running through the repair procedures on this machine and it didn't work either.

Two things: one, do I have some kind of virus on this desktop, and two, has anyone found a way to repair the corrupted files?

Thanks,
Matt

I recently did a new install of Windows XP, having been using Windows 2000. I backuped and formatted the disk and the install went with out problem. I also installed SP3.

The main problems I'm experiencing are with Word files taking a very long time to load and being unable to access the internet/network for about 40 seconds when booting up.

I wonder if I'm infected or perhaps there is a network issue?

Here's a detailed description:

On startup items load as normal, then there is a long delay of about 30-40 seconds when nothing happens as if it's finished start up, however I can't access the internet or the network. Then the remaining startup programs suddently load (such as the Wacom graphics tablet driver) and I can now access the internet and network.

When I click a Word or Excel files from a shared drive it 14 seconds to load Word/Excel then another 3 seconds to load the file itself! However when I load Word locally it loads instantly and load a new document instantly. (Office 2003).

After the computer had been on for about 5/6 hours Word/Excel loads files from the network instantly. Really weird and annoying!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, John

1. Run scandisk/checkdisk
2. Run defrag
3. Check to see what applications launch on start up. If you re-installed a ton of applications (Office, for example) these may be launching their quick starts on boot; also review your Anti-Virus's settings.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. A couple of days ago I tried to open an excel file that I regularly use and when I opened it, all cells were blank except A1. In it was "FileError_22001. I start to investigate and every excel file is the same. Furthermore, all of my word & picture files have the same problem. All my excel files are 18 KB, all my word files are 20 KB. They are all time stamped with the exact same time.

I have McAfee that is provided by my employer but I discovered that it had not been updated in some time for some unknown reason. I called our IT folks yesterday morning and they tried to get me fixed but were unable to and had to pass the ticket up to the next level. They were unable to get the virus stuff working again either.

Whatever I got infected with turned off my McAfee firewall, then started corrupting all of my excel, word and picture files. It did not corrupt any files in my recycle bin. I tired to do a system restore to the day before the problems started but it didn't help. Turns out whatever got loaded probably happened the day before all the bad stuff started happening. So, I unrestored the restore that I did the first time and did a system restore to December 1st instead. It did not help and created more problems for me. I keep getting these pop ups, one after another.

I would attach screen shots of the errors but I can't figure out how to do it.

Some files - not all, don't open when double clicked. Word (or excell) starts up, the hourglass sits there for a few seconds and then rotates once, then the tail of the mouse cursor turns multiple colors for a short time, then nothing. Word stays open but the file never opens. Shut down word and double click on the same file again and it opens right up. Again, not all files. Happens consistently with the same files (i.e., open it twice to actually see it, edit it, close it, have to open it twice again to get it to come up).

i am running win xp pro. i have office pro 2003 installed with all the latest updates. The problem comes when i try to open a word or excel file from my desktop or even one of my other drives. Meaning just being able to double-click on the document and having it open. When i do this the folder that the document is in wont respond. Then the folder freezes and i must use task manager to close the folder. Keep in mind that i DONT receive any error messages when double clicking the the file.
i can however, go into start >programs >microsoft office > (word or excel) and open the program there, then open the document. but i shouldnt have to do this.
i have tried to run the repair to no avail. i have uninstalled and then reinstalled office with no luck. Norton windoc found problems (missing files) with my .net framework, so i uninstalled and then reinstalled that. That fixed the .net missing files but not my office problem.

Help me please cuz this has a tendency to be very frustrating!!!!! Tendency meaning every time i try to use the program.

Hello!
I have an Excel sheet that contains text/data per row. This excel sheet may have as many as 300 rows of data. I would like to export the data in the excel file row to a word template, and save that to a specific file name which corresponds to column 2. I would like to be able to 'click' a button and have all 50 rows export their information using the word template and have these files saved under specific filenames in the line item data (ex: column 2). Do you have any suggestions on how I can do this?

Office 2003 on XP.

If I double-click a .doc or .xls file, I get a brief "Preparing to Install" window that goes away in a second or so. The app then opens to an empty screen. If I then click File/Open, I can drill down to my file and open it that way.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Word and Excel won't open files directly

This is a long shot, but you may have to associate the files with the program they were meant for. On eway to do this is to open my computer, not any office program. Find the file (files) you want, right click and choose "Open With" and pick the correct program in the list.

In the future your files should open with the right program without any additional efftort.

Let me know if this works.

Hi billibo

I don't know if this is relevant, but I had a problem a couple of days ago and found that my Windows Installer Service had somehow been disabled. Resetting this to manual fixed things for me. Something to check anyway. (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services).

Good luck.

My daughter visits school websites and somehow, does something that creates "excel" or word files that appear in the "recent documents" files list (track results, team schedules etc). When you go to open them, they appear to be trying to acess a webpage that typically ends up saying "file in different format" and if you hit "yes" open anyway, it says the data cant be found and there is some school website url address listed.

I cant delete these file listings, nor do they show up when you say look around in windows explorer, all these "files" are in fact not listed. How do I get rid of these things in my "recent documents" list- and does anybody know how these files are "formed" ? My daughter has no idea how this is happening!

A:word and excel files cant be deleted-appear to come from web page visits

Those aren't actual files, just shortcuts to them (whether they still exist or not).
Windows creates the shortcuts so you can access the actual documents quickly when you need them.

Download, install and run Ccleaner to remove them from the Recent Documents list:
