Hotmail sending spam to all contacts

Q: Hotmail sending spam to all contacts

hello folks

Problem :
My hotmail recently started sending spam and junk mails to all my contacts. I noticed this because my sent folder was full of this spam messages. It has been doing this for past 2 days.

Steps I have taken to try and solve this
I tried changing my Hotmail password, alternative email and secret question ... without any results

Warning my Google Chrome gave me this morning

This is probably not the site you are looking for!
You attempted to reach by151w.bay151.mail.live.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as a248.e.akamai.net. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of by151w.bay151.mail.live.com.
You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site.
After seeing that warning i suspected that my DNS had been changed by some virus and my sites were being redirected to some shady server. However the result of my ipconfig/all showed that I still have the right DNS on my NIC.

Also some of these spam emails are sent when my PC is turned off sometimes.

Your Help in solving this will be HIGHLY appreciated
I am attaching my HijackThis log to this post also the TSG Sysinfo :

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, TechSupport Forum

I hope you can resolve my issue where my hotmail is sending my contacts links to follow into spam. I can confirm this because i have added myself to my contacts list and i have recived one from myself. On top of that, my contacts responded back telling me that they are recieving it. I have re-installed windows (not in hopes of repairing the problem, due to actual OS mis-functions)

EDIT: I also do have access to a recovery disk/re installer

Here is my DDS log:

I have seen a few posts on this but they have all been closed due to lack of feedback. This has happened to me about 3 times now, I get a whole lot of Delivery Failure reports in my Hotmail inbox that tell me the following email couldn't be sent. It appears to have tried to send this message to everyone in my contacts list, and in some cases successfully. It's very embarrassing.Hey friend,How are you these days?I got a nice webiste ,that guys sell lots of laptops |cell phones| PS3 | cameras and so on,which are brand new and original,But the price is so cheap and quality is nice. The international shipping is door to door ,more accurate ,more security!Go and check it : www.eleRUSH.com MSN: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] have changed my email account password as this seems to be the only advice that Windows live can offer, other than the usual "how to keep yourself safe" stuff.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can stop this from happening again? Thanks

A:Hotmail account sending out spam to my contacts list

Unless you are absolutely certain that the E-mail is actually coming from your computer, it would be more likely that someone else's computer is infected and the malware found your E-mail address there. And too, spammers often mask their stuff as if it came from an E-mail daemon, since most ISPS do not filter that address.

I have a problem where an automated mail is sent from a third party software (SPAM) that goes to all my contacts in my address book.

What should I do?

I want to stop this program from sending automated messages. This is from a website Desktop Dating. It keeps sending a message that Did you receive my Invite to all my contacts.

How do I ensure that these mails do not go out.

A:Gmail sending SPAM to all my contacts

Wish I knew-the same exact thing has happened to my hotmail account and has sent this "invite" to my contacts on my hotmail account! I am very angry about this and when I tried contacting all of my contacts to let them know not to open the email invite to desktop dating that was supposedly from me, microsoft sent me a message saying I exceeded my 300 email messages a day so my email account is now suspended for 24 hours!!That is ridiculous because as now 374 other contacts on my list will not get the warning message about not opening up the desktop dating invite and thus their contact lists will probably be hijacked too because I can't warn them in time about this bogus email message. Let me know if someone tells you what to do--wish we could sue all these jerks for the problems they have caused us by their scams.

Thanks for the help!

The email content was something like "hey check this out this is intense... (link to job offering)" I deleted all of it before I copied it down.

My mother's gmail account seems to have contracted a virus that sends an email with the subject line '+hi+' to everyone in the contacts book and with the url 'http://sites.google.com/site/s3895yhf56eydya/aovq7a' in the message body. The site appears to be Canadian and is selling vyagra.

I don't think it's likely to have done any harm to the computer itself, and we noticed the problem when she received several failed message emails. The machine we noticed the problem was a mac so I guess that makes it even less likely the virus is affecting the actual computer but obviously it's not great for my Mum to be sending everyone she knows links to vyagra sites and also I don't know if the emails themselves contain the virus and would infect the recipients.

Is it possible to disinfect the account or does one just have to start over with a new one. That would be hugely inconvenient given how long my mother has used this account.

My friend has been complaining to me that "someone hacked into her account" and is sending spam to all of her contacts from MSN, Hotmail and Facebook.

I understand that a lot of spam only appears to be sent from a specific account when in fact the "from" field is really just one of the many e-mail addresses that have been stolen.

But, the fact that the recipients of the spam are all on her contact list and it the e-mails are coming from several different contact lists makes me wonder if this is true. Perhaps someone has "stolen" her contact lists?

How does this all work, and is there anything she can do about it?

In researching why someone's Yahoo account was sending spam to all of their contacts, I discovered a neat tool that Yahoo offers. If you go to "Account Info," there is a section that says, "View Your Recent Login Activity." We found that someone from India and/or Indonesia was logging into the account (see screenshot attached). The WY logins are the actual legit user in the USA, but the India and Indonesia logins are not legit. Before cancelling the account, we suggested a VERY strong password consisting of letters, numbers, symbols, capital letters, etc. We will monitor to see if any strange activity recurs.

Hi, I don't know how it happened but my Uncle seemed to get his MSN email sending porn spam to some of his contacts. Seeing I can't monitor what he does on the computer there is really noway of knowing how he happened to accomplish this. I ran spyware scans with Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. All it found was cookies and no virus or anything that would lead me to believe he had a virus. I also scanned with AVG and it came up clean. How do you keep a web-based email from sending spam to your contacts under your name? I do know his password is saved. If he changes his password and types it in from now on will that stop it? Thanks.

A:MSN email sending porn spam to some contacts

I believe that sometime last week a lot of MSN/Hotmail accounts were hacked and their contact lists taken over.
I have read that the first thing to do is to change your email address. Personally, I would get a different address and close that one...Perhaps someone else here has a better idea.

Hi

My hotmail email address seems to be sending out spam to people without my knowledge. I first found out about it when I started to get some failed delivery notifications, and a friend told me that he had received an email from me recommending an electrical website! I have since found that my signature had been changed to an advertisment, and there was a similar "out of office" message put on the account. Now I am getting lots of failed delivery notifications from people / places that I don't recognise at all.

I'm using Vista OS and have AVG free addition as virus protection. I have since added Avira Free as well. Doing full scans with both fails to find any threats. I've just done a HijackThis scan and would be thankful if someone could have a look through and tell me if there is something in there that shouldn't be (the only entry that looks suspect to me is the "02 - BHO: WormBlaster" entry, but I really don't know what I'm talking about). Or is there is something else that I should be doing? I did read in an article whilst searching the web that my pc might not be infected, but it may be someone elses, and my email address might have just been picked up out of their address book - is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any help - Mark.

Hi guys,

Not a major issue but....

Tonight a contact of mine on msn said she had recieved some emails from my account that were obvious spams. She says she has had them from other contacts too, and all from the UK.
She even named it the British Bug LOL

Is there any way I can check how these are going out? and stop them?

I know I have had similar emails myself from a contact sometime last year.

I use a hotmail account and a googlemail account alongside MSN and sometimes I use Digsby as well to organise them.

I have Vista Home Premium which is updated weekly. Antivirus is AVG free version 8, last updated today, and every day when I boot up.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This problem has occurred several times and has caused me great embarrassment. I click a name from my contacts list, which appears in the "send to" field. The name I select is the only name displayed in that field, and no names are displayed in the CC or BCC fields. I write my email and send it, but when I recieve the hotmail confirmation, it says my email has been sent to my intended receipient, as well as some other random person in the address book (not anyone near the intended person in alphebetical order). One particularly graphic email I sent to my boyfriend was somehow also sent by hotmail to my MOTHER, much to everyone's horror. Why?! Has this happened to anyone else? Can I prevent this in the future??

I've changed password and then ran several different anti-virus (avira, kaspersky, windows malicious software, plus?) and have not turned up anything. I'd be happy to re-install windows (which was my plan to restore performance) but am also concerned that whatever the virus/worm/malware is, that it may also be on my backup external hard drive.

In the past month or so, I've also found that sometimes my machine hangs on boot, either at the "Windows XP" screen, or just after that and before the "Welcome" screen. On rare occassions, machine will load all the way to the desktop image, but never load desktop icons, taskbar, etc.

I believe my machine is pretty "junked up" due to many different installations of shareware, trial software, etc (almost always downloaded from cnet.com, majorgeeks, filehippo) but the biggest problem, the spam email, only occurred after I connected an external hard drive passed along to me by a "friend". so, that may be source.

im running win xp through bootcamp on a mac, yesterday i discovered that my hotmail account had been using to send spam to all my contatcs(evidence in my sent folder).

This is the first time iv had this happen to me, how could my hotmail account have been compromised?could my password have been hacked? or is there another way they gained access to my account?

I have since changed my password but i doubt that will be enough, i do not want to have to make a new accoutn and keep this one what should i do?

I would recommend scanning your system (full Scan) spyware and malware using your current anti virus program.

My hotmail account has been sending out spam for quite awhile. I cancelled the account thinking the spamming would stop, but it hasn't, what else can I do?

A:My cancelled Hotmail is still sending spam

If you can still log into the account, change the password and empty your contacts list.

If it's been sending spam to people you know, tell them to add a filter to block any incoming messages from your hotmail address.

My mum asked me today, why was I sending her spam mail and true enough, I checked my hotmail account and I've sent out 2 spam emails with links to a website.

In a panic I immediately changed my password and started virus scanning.
I have a paid NOD32 running on my machine, I also did a check with spybot and malwarebytes and all they found were some tracking cookies.
I also did a scan just before christmas with pandascan online scanner and that found nothing but cookies.

Now the only thing that's changed been then and christmas was me receiving a reconditioned Iphone 4, which has turned into a bit of a saga, the phone was sold by a reputable store chain, but when I tried to activate it on the 3 network, they told me the phone had been registered as "lost" so it had been blocked. I synced this phone up with my machine and itunes account before the truth came out.
Whether there's a connection I don't know.

I'm running windows 7 64-bit, but I did run gmer, most of the options were greyed out, but it didn't report anything suspicious.

I'm greatful for any help, I need to know how they got into my hotmail account

Hello. Recently, my hotmail account sent random emails to my contacts. This has happened before with me and I changed my password, and it was fixed but it is happening again now.

First step I took was contacted hotmail...and they looked into my running processes and told me: under the "user name", if it doesn't show your name, then someone is controlling your computer or in other words, they are running something on your machine. The technician pointed out a few processes:

1. atieclxx.exe
2. csrss.exe
3. winlogin.exe
4. VESMgrSub.exe

I googled these and some sites say they are malware/trojan and others say they are part of the computer.

So, in the end my questions are:
1. how did hotmail account sent those emails randomly?
2. Are these processes "ok" or are they really a threat to the computer?
3. If they are, what should I do to remove them.

Note: I do have Norton Anti-Virus software running.

Hello,

I have just had my Hotmail send out a mass amount of spam emails, with links to webpages. I am assuming that either:

a) my account has been hacked
b) my computer has a security vulnerability that has been taken advantage of, or
c) I have a virus.

I have changed my password in case my account was hacked.

I access my Hotmail regularily from both home and the office, so if it is option B or C, I am currently on my home computer and testing that machine. I also regularily use MSN Messenger from my work computer. I have not been to work since I noticed the emails being sent from my Hotmail account to see if there is anything odd happening with my Messenger or not.

Any help regarding what is causing the problem, and how I can fix it or increase my security to prevent it from happening is greatly appreciated!

What is your recommended action when your hotmail is sending spam mail to everyone?
i heard Skype associating hotmail can be one at fault, probably some bot.
(closing hotmail account might not work either)

Sounds like 4 tracking cookies were at fault,
discovered after trying another antispyware other than Malwarebytes.
(what i find weird is: how could these tracking cookies not be removed by ccleaner)

A:Hotmail sending spam mail

I doubt that tracking cookies were to blame.

CCleaner will leave cookies that are associated with your Favorites/Bookmarks if you tell it to.

If the SPAM was sent to those that you have listed in your Hotmail account contacts, then it sounds like someone or something gained access to that account. One solution might be to change your password and not keep contacts in the account. Keep contacts in a separate document - then copy/paste as needed. I know that is not convenient, but it has worked for some users that I support. (They came up with the idea. I did not suggest it to them. It has worked for them.)

The more e-mails people forward around, the greater the chances are that their e-mail address will be harvested. (But that does not give the bad guys your list of ALL contacts - unless you forwarded something to ALL contacts.) Sometimes you will see a list of e-mail addresses in the body of the forwarded e-mail. Some e-mail forwards bounce around for years. If the e-mail passes thru a compromised e-mail server, then those e-mail addresses can get harvested. SPAM can be sent using any/all of those harvested e-mail addresses as the fake/spoofed sender address.

You might want to create a post in the security sub-forum and let them help you scan your computer.

heya,

Well it looks like a worm or virus of some sort has got into my hotmail account and has sent emails to everyone on my contact list. Quite crude emails at that... which is very embarrassing for me.

I have looked at a few users that have suffered the same fate after searching it on Google and have seen that some have run the program "Malwarebytes". When looking at my work account I noticed i had recieved a email from my personal account which was clearly spam - I since logged into my account and the email is in my sent box so I presume has genuinley sent by me and not spoofed my address. Hi,

I logged on to my work email this morning to discover I'd been sent an email from my girlfriends hotmail account. The email had been sent to me and everyone else in her hotmail contacts and all it contained was a brief statement that requested people to visit a website (which was blank). The thing is, the email was sent when I know for a fact my girlfriend wasn't logged onto hotmail and she certainly never sent it or knows anything about it. Does anyone know why this has happened? Or has anyone else come accross this? She only ever accesses her hotmail account at home and no-one else could have used that computer.

Many thanks for any advice!

A:Hotmail sending hoax emails to all contacts - Can anyone help?

What is most likely to have happened is that her email address has been "harvested" from an infected computer on which the address was stored (from an incoming email). Or from any public forum or webpage where it may have been posted.

The harvested email has been used by a spammer or virus writer as a "spoofed" :From address, which only looks as if it came from her.

If the email website link was blank, it may have been an error by the perpetrator or the website may have actually contained some nasty script that you have protection against the vulnerability that it was trying to exploit.

There are a large number of permutation on the theme.

However last night my hotmail account was hacked and a virus email was sent to all my contacts (without my knowing ofcourse). I have since changed my password.

Is this coincidence or are having the windows restore virus and having my account hacked connected? Ried did a great job cleaning my machine but could there have been something left over? Involving a keylogger maybe?

Thanks.

Hello. I was alerted to this problem a few days ago when I received the unsendable error message in my hotmail inbox saying the e-mail could not be delivered because the recipient had spam blockers. The message has returned a few times each day from approximately 8 e-mail addresses that I rarely, if ever, use; only one is used every 3-6 months. I immediately ran my norton and spybot sd, both of which I keep updated, and both of which said I had no infections. I've checked my sent e-mails and see that this e-mail, which is titled something like "I played this free game for a few minutes", was only sent to about 12 or 15 people, and since I rarely e-mail them I deleted their addresses, except one. This morning, the sent list for that e-mail included that one e-mail address and one new e-mail address, and I have deleted both from my contacts on hotmail.

A second problem which may be related is that I have been unable to download SP2 since it came out; when I get a message that windows has an update for me, if I click to allow it to install, it always comes back that it could not be installed, the system is unstable, please remove programs. It's happened so many times in the past few years that I ignore most windows downloads. A week ago or so Norton wanted to download its 2007 update, which required both SP2 and The latest Explorer to be installed. I tried again to install SP2, and it was blocked, meaning I could not update Norton. I tried to follow a thread (... Read more

My hotmail account sent out a spam message to all of my contacts. It also set my "away message" to the same spam message (which may have blocked my incoming emails temporarily). I changed my account password as soon as I found out what was going on (which I believe was the day after most of the spam emails were sent out) but I want to make sure this wasn't the result of malware (as opposed to just my password being compromised).

This is the email that was sent to all my contacts:

Hey,
how are you doing recently?

My computer has been sending Spam emails to my contact list off and on for a couple of weeks now. I've run Avast antivirus and SuperAntiSpyware multiple times, but still the spam goes out. I am using Outlook to manage my email (several accounts setup, but only my msn.com account is affected). It seems my msn.com password may have been compromised as well since the spam sometimes gets sent when my computer is off. I've changed my msn.com password, but I can see that spam messages have also been sent directly from my PC since they are listed in the "Sent" folder.

Any help will be appreciated.

I do have a Windows XP Install CD, and my system drive is "E:".

Thanks, Doug

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Your hard drive is almost full. Having too little free space on your hard drive can compromise system performance.

My Hotmail account has started sending out random spam mail to people who are listed in my contacts. One friend has had 15 of these emails in one day. The emails have no subject and only contain a weblink which is usually different with every mail sent out - e.g. http://caribbean-vacation-rent.com/indexi.html

As I am completely oblivious to these emails being sent and I have no control over them, I am at a loss as to what to do. Deleting the account completely would seem to be the sure way of stopping this but as I have that email address registered with a number of online forums etc. I am reluctant to do this.

Would removing my friend's email addresses from the contact list be a solution?

A:Solved: Hotmail account sending out spam

Not got hotmail, but I had the same thing happen with a Gmail account of mine, that I normally access through OE, so don't go into the web interface.

Turns out that someone in China had logged into it and sent spam to all the contacts. How they worked out the password is beyond me, presumably a security flaw in Gmail. But that's what I'd suspect. Hotmail, like Gmail, will let you check who logged in when and where from if you look at the bottom of the page (I guess).
You'll need to change yr password and security details. They already have yr address book so no point in deleting that.

Hi,

This morning when I logged in to my hotmail account I had several undeliverable e-mail messages in my inbox. When I looked at the sent items folder I saw that everyone on my contact list had received an e-mail message that I did not send. My anti-virus is working and updated and it did not find any infected files in my computer.

I have changed my password to a temporary one until I understand what's causing this and can make it stop. I have run all the diagnostic tools suggested on the "first step" thread and attached the files. I'm Running Windows 7 and I don't have the original DVD or a boot disk.

Here's a copy of the message sent to my contact list:
