I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In my Home Office using my Notebook and wireless router I have WEP encryption with a Network security key. But I am often away on the road in Asia and I connect to both unsecured and WEP secured wireless networks in restaurants, hotels and internet cafes.

When I need to log in to certain web sites to attend to important personal info like bank accounts and credit cards and make payments etc I often avoid it for fear of this information being visible or accessible to others, even on the WEP secured ones.

I 'm wondering though, if it shows the connection as WEP secured in Manage Wireless Connections, does that mean things are secure or can other people using the same wireless pick up on what others around them are sending and receiving?

I guess what I am asking is, how can I know if a wireless connection is safe on the road and is there anything I can do to make it safe or safer? I suspect many others encounter this same issue.

Thanks,

I've spent a couple weeks trying out different anti-virus programs and I didn't like any of them, or they slowed my PC down too much. I have never heard of F-secure Anti-virus before. I was wondering if current users could tell me how they like it?

I know that is uses Bitdefender's database (I would be using BD if it didn't stall out my PC so hard).

I'm wondering how much memory, on average, the program uses and how light the program is?

A:F-Secure Internet Security 2016 vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

If a security soft ranks amongst the top performing AVs, it won't matter much if it does function correctly or causes problems on your specific system.

From lab test results F-Secure has an edge over Panda during testing the past few years in terms of detection (although higher false positives).

From users, it seems more prefer Panda - which is one of Neil Rubenking's (PCMag) favs (that don't mean much - but that is just my opinion).

I'd say, in terms of overall protection, Panda has a slight edge; it might protect your system in a few instances that F-Secure will not.

I am trying to make an secure POP3 (port 995) and secure IMAP (port 993) connection thru Verizon FIOS via the ActionTec MI424WR modem/router/802.11G box that Verizon supplied. I am running Vista, and I am using Outlook 2007, which is set to these ports.

I wanted to do this with the firewall set to the "Maximum Security (High)" setting.

These ports were not available in the ActionTec's pick list so I added these ports (using the "Advanced" tab and then under "Protocols") so they read "TCP any -> 993" and "TCP any -> 995"

I tried adding these ports to the "Access Control" table, and the "Port Forwarding" table and the "Advanced Filtering" table but none worked.

The Verizon Tech Support line worker told me the only solution was to enable the DMZ host and set it to be the IP address of the computer I happened to be on.

To my astonisment, with DMZ enabled, the "Access Control" rules seemed to kick in for the DMZ host and my secure POP3 would only work if I had this port allowed in the "Access Control" table.

Questions:
1. Is it safe to run with DMZ pointing to my computer.

I thought this effectively brought the "DMZ host" (i.e. my computer) outsied the firewall and exposed all the ports on my computer directly to the internet. (But if that were the case, then

2. why does the Access Control table work only to the DMZ host???

DMZ does indeed expose the computer directly to the outside world, that's why it's called the DMZ!

Hello all

I have recently reformatted my HDD and re-installed Windows 7.
I would like to have some suggestions and help on deciding what Email client I should use.

I have used Thunderbird Email client for a few years now and I must admit I'm relatively happy with it.
But I know software technology has moved on. and I always like to see and maybe try differing software alternatives.

What is the safest most secure Email client to use on Windows 7 ?
Windows live mail 2011 has not long been released, and I am wondering whether to give it a try instead of Thunderbird.
Or should I stick with Thunderbird becuase using anything other than Thunderbird could compromise my systems security by using anything other than Thunderbird for my Email.
Or are there any other freeware alternatives to Thunderbird or Windows Live mail 2011. That I am not aware of that are safer and better than the two above Email clients ?

I would also like some advice on choosing what email server settings to use. What are the fundamental difference between POP and IMAP Email server settings.
and why is there an option to choose either one ?
Is one safer then the other. If so which one ? Which one should I use, if I use one PC with various email addresses from various Email providers such as Gmail, GMX, and Windows Live Mail ?

After searching online for an answer I have decided to ask here for some clear advice.

Thanks in advance.

A:What is Safest and secure Email client for Windows 7

You made a good choice with Thunderbird.

As far as safety and security goes, using computers period is a security risk. Your information is never 100% safe all the time. Vulnerabilities are always being found, and software is always being updated. It's a never-ending cycle. One email client versus another...there isn't much to compare really.

Most email providers allow for encryption between the server and your computer (to keep your emails from being read by someone else). You simply have to choose the right settings.

I have never used another email client, so I can't advise on any good free alternatives. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-mail_clients

Here are the main differences between IMAP and POP:

POP is a one-way download (of new emails only) from the email server to your email client. When you delete an email in your client, it stays on the server. When you send an email in your client, it does not get put in the Sent folder on the server. Server > computer only

IMAP has more features in the fact that it pulls everything from the server (including email folders) and syncs everything back to the server. When you send an email in Gmail for example, it will show up in the Sent folder in your webmail (Gmail in your internet browser). Everything goes both ways. Whatever you do in webmail is reflected in your client, and vice-versa.

IMAP is better if you switch between webmail and your email cleint a lot and need everything to st... Read more

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Both are followed by specific connection and encryption information, i.e. TLS 1.2.

Hello All,

This is driving me crazy....

The Problem/Symptoms
In IE 6, When I try to get onto email, banking, etc. (https sites) I get the "Page Cannot be Displayed" screen. Firefox will not even open the home page, and an online poker client I normally use without a problem cannot connect. I believe this started after a few automatic updates on August 16 - most were security updates.

What I Have Tried
First of all, in Safe Mode everything works fine which really baffles me.

- I have turned off my windows Firewall completely
- I do not have Norton, only Symantec Antivirus... on which I have tried turning off auto-protect.
- I have checked the SSL setup in internet options and all is ok.
- I deleted temporary internet files.
- I went thru MS config and turned off all non-microsoft services.
- I ended various processes in the task manager.
- I connected to a neighbor's wireless to see if it was a router problem
- System Restore is not an option - was off before the updates.

None of these worked (EXCEPT SAFE MODE where all worked fine)

This is really baffling me and now I am starting to consider a reinstall of windows, although who knows if that will even work. Does anyone have ANY ideas on what to do about this? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks all.

When making an attempt to run the executable, no event happens on the screen. Looking at the Event Viewer under Administrative Events, the following detail is captured:

"The description for Event ID 2 from source acvpndownloader cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

hello, i used acronis true image and disk director suite and successfully cloned and backup disks many times. recently i installed pgp enterprise to secure the disk. as fate would have it i decided to increase the secure zone partition. the operating system on boot prompted for pgp password to decrypt the drive and then acronis loaded and i used the partition management option. the partition limit of secure zone was enhanced from 55 gb to 61 gb (limit being shown as 69gb). the three steps that appeared were C drive size being fixed from 55 gb to 45 gb, D drive (which was pgp secured) was shown to be going NO change and the third step was the Secure Zone expanding from 45 GB to 51 gb or so. when all the steps were done, the system booted. as always the first prompt was PGP secure disk, i entered the password but the second prompt for Acronis halted and Displayed a fatal error and asked to press enter to attempt to boot the OS. On pressing Enter the system booted and the OS was normal EXCEPT that the D drive was being shown as Raw (i.e. needed to formatted). On inspecting the D drive with Acronis disk manager the three partitions were visible the C and Secure zone with the newly allocated disk space but the D was being shown as RAW Although the D disk size was being shown as before, i.e. 45 GB. All assets are resided in the D drive. Please advise how to recover or restore the partitions.

I use Putty all the time. I suspect there might be an underlying driver problem with your network adapter somewhere or something along those lines because there is nothing in the Putty code that should be able to bluescreen the system. Hi,
I had unfortunately gotten a trojan and had to do a HD full wipe and reformat after having tried to do a system recovery with the USB recovery disk I made when I first got my computer (new). I don't know if the trojan was blocking the recovery or what but it simply would not take and just booted back into windows bypassing the recovery all together.
So I am sitting now with a Build 9200 windows 8 but want to go back to using windows 7 as microsoft has not replied to any of my emails regarding the issue with activation if one has to do a HD wipe like I did. Build 9200 it seems you can't just go into the advanced system settings/restart and access the UEFI to disable secure boot which means I can't install windows 7 and get rid of 8 all together, or atleast can't without some other way to disable the secure boot.
Simple fix... would be put the freaking activation codes that we paid for back on the boxes, or if you don't like that put them at least with the documentation that comes with the computer. Lacking that option I'm stuck here with asking this forum for help.
Help?

Hello everyone,

I have just come across a six month free trial of F-Secure's Antivirus 2006 (fully initialized)
software. I haven't done a complete archival search, but can't seem to find any discussion
on F-Secure or it products.

I would like to hear from anyone who is using F-Secure's products. How do you like them?

The one thing that made me uncomfortable about their product was being instructed
to uninstall all conficting sofware, i.e. Spybot, Lavasoft products, Microsoft's Antivirus,
and McAfee's (paid for) Antivirus.
Made me very uneasy.

A:F-Secure Antivirus 2006(?)

Since Lavasoft's Adaware Personal is anti-spyware would it not seem reasonable to assume
that F-secure would not operate effectively because it is in itself a kind of spyware?

Secure computers aren't so secure.

Even well-defended computers can leak shocking amounts of private data. MIT researchers seek out exotic attacks in order to shut them down.

The encryption system that Tromer was attacking, called AES, was particularly vulnerable because it used tables of precalculated values as a computational short cut, so that encoding and decoding messages wouldn’t be prohibitively time consuming. Since Tromer and his colleagues published their results, Intel has added hardware support for AES to its chips, so that Internet encryption software won’t have to rely on such “lookup tables.”

In a statement, Intel told the MIT News Office that its decision “was mainly motivated by the performance/efficiency benefits achieved,” but that “in addition, there is a potential security benefit since these new instructions can mitigate the possibility of software side channel attacks on AES that have been described in research papers, including those discovered by Tromer, Percival, and Bernstein.”Click to expand...

Ok, now how old is my chip and does it have the Intel hardware support for AES? Gulp!

-- Tom

P.S. I will try to find out which chip series have the hardware support for AES and post it here - but, if you find out before I do, please do not hesitate to post the information yourself. Is it time to get a new motherboard already, or will my current motherboard be able to accept the chips with AES hardware support?

Hi,

Recently purchased a refurbished Toshiba Satellite C50 running windows 8.1 operating system. Was very pleased with it but found the message 'SecureBoot not configured correctly Build 9600' in a watermark in the bottom right corner of my desktop.

Decided to search the internet for a resolution and after going on 3 troubleshooting sites, found out about the BIOS Setup required, however it warned that this was for advanced users who know their stuff about the technicalities of computers. Whilst I am computer literate, I'm not someone who likes to mess with the advanced options. Then, I stumbled across a reliable computer blog which had a detailed post on SecureBoot.

( Link to blog and specfic post:
www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/deal-with-the-secureboot-isnt-configured-correctly-watermark-in-windows-81/ )

I thought this would resolve my issue, and I will admit it did help, telling me to use windows powershell as a precaution before using the BIOS setup. I was glad I did as it came back telling me that I have a non-production SecureBoot policy present on my laptop in which case I would have to ask for technical support for a system specific solution which would typically be a firmware update.

I did try to phone, but the line was very busy and felt it might be easier to post this issue on a forum.

If anyone has an answer please help as I really would like to enable SecureBoot if possible, as I believe computers should be set up with the best ... Read more

A:Satellite C50 - Secure Boot not configured correctly Build 9600

Someone commented the blog and posted this solution:

The registry fix to remove the watermark is as follows.
1. Start the Registry Editor with Admin rights (C:\Windows\regedit)
2. Navigate to the following path
-> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System.
3. There, the two values " ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin "and" EnableLUA "set to" 0 ".

You can also try to enable the secure boot option in BIOS (in case its not already enabled)
To get into the BIOS, press F2 while powering ON the unit.

Additionally recommend checking this Microsoft page:

If I try to do a full scan with F-Secure Anti-virus 7.0, my system freezes during the scan. It never happens at the same place. The mouse cursor still moves but nothing else works. I have to hit the reset button to reboot. While the scan uses a fair amount of CPU resources, it doesn't max it out. I can run prime95 for an hour without a problem. Panda Activescan 2.0 works just fine in full scan mode. I haven't error checked or defragged in a while. I also had a malware infection recently which I think I have corrected. My system has a Phenom 9600 Black edition CPU (not overclocked), a MSI K9A2 Platinum version 1 MB (bios version 1.30), 2048 MB (2x 1024 MB) Mushkin HP2-6400 running at the SPD settings, Gigabyte GV-RX387512H Radeon HD 3870 graphics, Creative X-Fi Platinum sound card and Linksys wireless g adapter. There are two SATA hard drives and two IDE drives and an LG super multi GGC-H20L optical drive. The WinXP Sp2 OS is on a Maxtor SATA-300 drive. The power supply is s Corsair HX620W. Most partitions are formatted as NTFS but I do have a couple of FAT-64 partitions.

Help or useful comments would be appreciated.

A:Antivirus Battle: Emsisoft vs F-Secure vs G-Data vs Vipre

I guess the winner of this battle must be Emsisoft since it is much much more popular here than the other three.

I think the advantages of F-Secure and G-Data over Emsisoft are:

They use heuristics in detection. (But "detection" might be viewed as useless by advanced users.)
They could repair some of the infected files, while Emsisoft could only delete or quarantine them.(But I also agree with @Umbra that Prevention is more important than Repairment.)
G-Data has the capability of roll-back.
I know nothing about Vipre...

I've been gradually adding more security programs, like "Spyware Guard" (which says SG in my taskbar) and Zone Alarm, and a few other programs I got from Jason's Tool Box - which runs checks to see how secure your pc is. Some I have found and taken out because they were getting in the way of doing things.

Overall, I don't really know what I'm doing and got messed up about it and what I have, etc.

If given a choice I usually set it on MEDIUM.

I have WIN 98 SE and IE 6 (which I think has it's own way of setting security, and I see on the taskbar it tells what ZONE a website is in Like right now it says "unknown Zone (Mixed)"

The problem I'm having now is with Bravenet. I used to use counters from there and have some on websites, but don't pay much attention to them. Recently I've wanted to delete some old counters and set up new ones on new pages.

When I try and log into BRAVENET it says I don't have cookies enabled (I do- and occasionally go clean them out). It also says if it's set in a restricted zone (which it says on the tastbar it is) to put it in as "okay".

I've done this, clicked on the restricted on the taskbar and added BRAVENET (the log in url) to this. It doesn't seem to stay there. Occasionally I have been able to sign in after doing this, but not on the regular log in page. I have to click the link to sign up for a counter and then it says "if you're already... Read more

I want to make my Windows 10 Pro PC more secure from something like a robbery or where my physical PC is in danger, not from a threat like a hacker or something on the internet who gains access to my PC.

As I was using my PC, I just realized that I store so much personal information on my PC: my personal photos, my personal journal and so on all on my PC. I have setup a "login password" where I'm asked to enter a password whenever I boot into Windows, however, aside from this I don't have any other passwords on it.

It'd be so easy for a burglar to walk into my study and just detach my external USB drives, my internal HDD's and so on. What's to prevent someone from taking my USB HDD's or internal HDD's and then connecting them to their PC at home and accessing my data?

Thank you!

Im just wondering if any of you have ever used or are at present using F-Secure AV,and if its any good and just how bad is it on eating the CPU. I have heard mixed opinions on its CPU usage so thats why im asking you!

The reason i ask, is over here in the UK,there is a leading Bank that for selected customers is giving away the new 2006 version away for free in order to crack down on on-line fraud. It is the full version and is all legit, and is offered free with all features for 24months. You simply download it from the official site and enter the product key recieved from the Bank in there letter.

The bank is also now, informing any customer by paging (text message) there mobile phone free of charge immediately after a transaction is made using there online account. So,if the transaction is legit, the customer simply ignors there text message, and if they recieve it when they have made no such transaction, they simply call there bank straight away and they track it back immediatley.I guess it works out best for both parties, we get a free AV,and even though the bank is technically paying for the AV, its considerably less than paying us back if our money is stolen on-line.

Many thanks,
Graveangel

A:F-secure Security Suite

I have never used it but with those features I would think it is worth a try. The worst that happens (I would hope) is you don't like it. F-secure is well respected by all accounts, and I would not see where you could be hurt. Just my opinion.

F-Secure has patched a remote code execution vulnerability that affected several of its security products and exposed users to drive-by download attacks.

The buffer overflow vulnerability was discovered by security consultant Anil Aphale, aka 41.w4r10r, and is located in the F-Secure Gadget Resource Handler ActiveX Control (fsresh.dll).

According to vulnerability management vendor Secunia, which rates this vulnerability as highly critical, the flaw is caused by a boundary error in the handling of the "initialize()" method.

The vulnerability can be exploited by tricking victims into visiting a specially-crafted web page using Internet Explorer.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 and 2011, F-Secure Internet Security 2010 and 2011, as well as products based on F-Secure Protection Service for Consumers version 9 and F-Secure Protection Service for Business - Workstation security version 9 are affected by this flaw.Click to expand...

Hi,

So, I need to protect my computer, had no luck with ESET not working and Panda causing BSOD's, so I'm now evaluating other options for a comprehensive protection (antivirus, antimalware, would be nice to protect banking, web browser and have a firewall) that I have offers to get quite cheap from my local vendors. Since there's no general topic, I'll ask on the subforums of the possible options. So, how good is F-Secure Internet Security? How good are their labs and engineers? Are the lab tests really that good?

I see they are one of the choices that use bitdefender's engine? Is there a special reason they do that and why would then someone rather use F-Secure instead of BitDefender? Is there a special reason they don't develop their own engine?

Any advice would be nice... Thank you.

I installed the new 9.0 CIS on my XP pc. Now I get an error message on boot saying the email scanning is nonfunctional due to a severe error. All Charter or FSecure can tell me is to uninstall and reinstall. It worked fine with Outlook Express in the previous version. I'm tempted to just abandon it and go to a different security program. How useless this software is if I can't protect myself from email malware. Pretty disgusted right now.
Thanks

Email protection is a redundant feature, I turn it off on all my installations due to problems related to most active email scanners.

You are still protected by the resident scanner from infection even if it comes in a email.

Since there is an error however, you can choose another solution
