Monitor goes to sleep, wont wake up

Q: Monitor goes to sleep, wont wake up

This happens primarily when I am playing a game. The screen turns off, pressing the keyboard or the mouse does not do anything. I have to hit the power button to get out.

I checked all the sleep and power settings, everything is set to never.
Here is the DxDiag file.
Anyone know?

Preferred Solution: Monitor goes to sleep, wont wake up

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Monitor goes to sleep, wont wake up

Try another video cable.

Try the monitor on another system. Try another monitor on your Gateway DX4831 system.

Swap out video card.

Hi, this from another post covers your problem:-

Quote:

Hi, since this revolves around "hibernation" lets take a look there. Your hibernation settings are contained in a file "hiberfil.sys" and if it is corrupt could be the cause of your problem (none of this will do any harm). Lets clear the file:-

Open a CMD prompt (as administrator, accessories right click command prompt select "run as administrator)

At the prompt type:-
Code:
powercfg -h off press enter
reboot to take effect
This will disable hibernation and clear the hiberfil.sys file.

After reboot open another CMD prompt (as administrator, as above) and type:-
Code:
powercfg -h on press enter
reboot to take effect
Now go to this site and apply the recommended settings for power saving (inc hibernation) read it all.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63...-problems.html

Hopefully this will resolve your problem.(don't worry about the vista applies to 7 as well)

hello i was creating a slide show to put on a dvd and when i was done i went to switch off my computer accidently hitting the sleep button and i hit the restart button and went to work came back but it was still acting like it was asleep my computer say no signal check power cable and such so i've unplugged everything and i have even tried the default analog monitor with no success i switched of my system from the back for about 30 seconds then powered it again and then it turns on switched itself off then turn't itself back on what is happening?

Edit: the mouse and keyboard have no power when i switch the computer on but i have lights in my machine which are working and so is the cd drive. I was wondering if this could be a power supply issue or maybe a motherboard issue.

i read through the first 5 pages lookin for this thread but was unable to find one. i got a new HD hannspree monitor a little while back and noticed a while later that if i ever need to reboot, the power light goes orange like its in power saving mode, but it wont wake up when the computer does, i have to physically turn it off and back on. ive tried swapping the drivers out for it but didnt seem to have any effect, im not entirely sure the video driver has anything to do with the monitor shutting off.

thanks for the help.

The video driver provides the signal to keep the monitor out of standby so if it is corrupted somehow it might not be able to come out.

check the driver in device manager

I'm using XP. When my computer goes to sleep, it won't wake up. Shaking the mouse, pressing key, and restoring do nothing. I have to turn off and turn on the CPU, but it just goes back to sleep again like Sleeping Beauty. Are there any princes or princesses out there that can show me how to wake this darn thing up, please? By the way, my user name is just a short version of my first name, Teecha. I'm novice to computers - Therefore, if you can assist, please post step-by-step instructions on what I should do. Thank you.

A:Monitor or CPU goes to sleep and won't wake up

Hello tech166 welcome to TSF! Hibernate or sleep? They are two different things. Do you have any programs open before the computer goes to sleep?

Or you can shut of the sleep mode by going to

1. Start>Control Panel>Power options

2. On the Power Schemes tab, select Home/Office Desk in the Power Schemes drop-down box

3. In the box labeled System standby, select Never

4. Click OK to save your changes.

Hi there,
long time reader, first post, I really hope someone can help me with this.

I do have extensive knowledge of both computer hw and Windows 7 OS but
this problem is driving me crazy.

New build
Mobo Asus H81M-K
CPU I7 4790
12GB RAM Kingstone 1300
Video: GeForce 610 2GB ram
3 Sata drives
1 Optical device

all brand new, everything works flawlessly but the only thing is if I put
the computer in sleep mode for more than few minutes
when I wake the machine (either pressing a key on the keyboard,
or pushing the power button, tried, no difference) no signal on the monitor.

Fans will spin, but monitor will be black and the only way to exit this stall
is to force power off, no good.

Things I tried/did/checked:

Chipset updated
Bios flashed to the last available
Intel Management Engine Driver updated
Graphic card, LAN, audio drivers updated
any other possible driver updated, all manually.

Power plan custom set to never sleep, never turn off screen,
no screensaver, no device can turn off to save power,
in short, everything is set for maximum performance,
nothing turns off automatically.

Mouse can't wake the computer up, keyboard can

All the power saving modes and options in the EUFI/BIOS are turned off,
speed step turned off, core parking disabled, turbo boost disabled,
no overclock.

Only C state supported is S3

at the bottom of this post, the list of devices supporting S3 vs all devices
(nothing strange, graphic card was my doubt, but is there, it does support
the S3 s... Read more

I know there has to be a simple fix to this but I'm banging my head against the wall right now trying to figure this out. Everytime my PC goes to sleep I'll press a button on my keyboard or move my mouse and it will wake up just fine, but the monitor won't wake up. I've also noticed that the backlight on my keyboard doesn't show up. I've tried different monitors and removed the VGA cable from the graphics card after waking up and plugged it back in and no video. I have to reboot the computer to get video again and everything works great.. until it goes into sleep mode again. I have updated my graphics card driver (Geforce GT 210) and still no fix. I haven't made any changes that would cause this. Someone has to know something about this. Thanks in advance for any help!

Relatively minor issue, but annoying. I have my computer set to shut off my monitors (2xDell U2412M) after 20 minutes of inactivity. Which it does, except that then they immediately turn back on and only on the second 20 minute interval do they actually stay off.

Both are connected by DVI to a Radeon R9 270 video card. The same monitors and cables I was using on a previous system with a GeForce 550 Ti without this issue.

I've tried updating the Catalyst drivers, scouring the Catalyst and Windows settings looking for anything that might explain this. Initially the "Alternate DVI operation mode" was checked in the Catalyst drivers, so I undid that for both displays, no change. Not using GPU image scaling, monitors are at their native resolution, I'm dubious that it's some kind of program activity since they shut off and stay off the second time around and I haven't been using my computer in all that time. This is on an 8.1 system with all the latest patches as of today. Everything looks perfect, no graphical distortions or artifacts, and 1920x1200 is easily within the reach of DVI. So I've got nothing when it comes to explaining why this is happening, but maybe someone else out there does.

I recently updated my video card as well as installed a number of Windows updates. Since that time, my monitor has difficulty coming back from a low-power state. The computer is running, but monitor stays blank with light orange light. I often have to shut down completely and eventually the monitor will come on. I "solved" this problem running a screensaver and continuously running my computer. Unfortunately, by the time I figured it was the updates those restore points are gone from my computer, even if I click "see more restore points".

Is there more restore points to be found on the computer? Can anyone direct me to a place I can find old Nvidia drivers?

Thanks.

Hello, I have done lots of eliminating so hopefully someone out there has the real solution for this. I have Vista Home Premium 64bit SP2. If I choose SLEEP mode it is my MONITOR that won't re-wake. When in sleep, I touch the mouse or keyboard and my CPU DOES re-wake, because I can hear the fan kick back on and the light on it lites back up, but a signal is not sent to wake the monitor. I thought it might be the video cards (I have 2 cards) so Dell replaced both under my warranty. I have made sure the video card drivers have been updated, in fact a newest published driver is only 2 weeks old. I then had Dell replace the monitor too, but that was not it either. So I have done lots of eliminating with hardware and drivers but nothing helps, so I'm thinking it has something to do with VISTA not sending a signal from the mouse/keyboard or even the CPU to tell the monitor to wake up! Even if I press the power button on the monitor, it will light up for a few seconds and then give the message "entering power save mode" and go back to black. It is like the monitor has been told 'you are in power save mode - stay there'. Lastly, another site suggested that some mice/keyboard software have an option to choose them to allow them to send a signal to wake monitor from sleep, but there is no type of choice for that on mine that I find.

Dell XPS 435 MT, running Vista 64 bit Home Premium, Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and a Dell monitor.

Over the last month or so, my monitor will not wake up after I manually put the computer to sleep. The CPU light, fan etc. comes on as well as the keyboard lights but the monitor will not come on.

I have to hold the power button in for seven seconds or so and the computer will go back into some sort of a sleep mode. Pressing the power button again, the computer will beep twice then pause and then it repeats the beep sequence. I hold in the power button to again turn it off. A single press of the power button brings the computer back to life and after a while "Resuming Window" shows up on the screen. Even when I shut the computer down, I sometimes have to hold in the power button for several seconds before the computer will boot.

I have tried several things to remedy the situation: System Restore, updating the video card driver, re-seating the video card on the mother board, restoring the Display Devices control panel (it has gone away a couple of times). I also ran the diagnostics on the Dell site and everything came up as working correctly.

I am not sure if I have a hardware or software problem. I was just about to reload the operating system today but knowing how long it would take to re-install software and files, I decided to search the forums a bit more. I have seen several posts on forums regarding this condition but have not found an answer yet. I hope one... Read more

Hi friends, I recently decided to reformat my computer on which I had vista (I've done this several times before without any incidents). During the formatting, the monitor went black and showed a small window with the message "monitor goes to sleep"; neither the mouse nor the keyboard could wake it up but the computer was running normally. I waited a few hours( to allow the vista to be reinstalled from the recovery partition) and then I turned the computer off from the button. When I turned it on the first thing I saw was a line on a black screen which said that there was an error in formatting the hard disk... and nothing else. Since I could not start the formatting process again, I used an old cd with XP and tried to install xp (I assumed that formatting from a cd would erase my partition C and the recovery partition D). And here is my problem: after 10-15 minutes, during the instalation of xp, the monitor went to a deep sleep again. I left the pc running for an hour or more to let xp to install and then I turned it off. When I turned it on xp was booted but it saw only 131 gb of my 500 gb, having only one partition. After 10-15 minutes of being awake the monitor went to sleep again. I tried to change the settings for the monitor but there is no sleep option, nor hybernation, only turn off monitor and turn off pc. Somebody told me that I may have rootkits and formatting does not erase the master boot record and I should use kill disk. I did, but with the monit... Read more

A few weeks back I upgraded my laptop and since then my computer started acting weird. My battery had until then been perfect, but now it drains during one night when computer is turned off, sleeping, closed lid etc..Also, as soon as I let it rest, close the lid or simliair it wont wake up again. The keyboard lights are on but notning except a hard reset works.Sometimes I do the hard reset and find that the internet webpages sometimes are "saved" and opens up when I power up again. The fan has also started to wound alot more recenlty. My guess is that some downloaded upgrade caused this but I dont know how to fix.I have tried downloading all the latest drivers etc.I have also tried a ton of tips from different forums regarding power settings, hybernation and such but nothing works. All of this happened right after the bad update so I know that the problem is not the battery itself..Thank you

Maybe it's just really sleepy? *hears drum being hit in background*

sorry...erm..yeah was too tempting.

To my knowledge there is no real clear reason as to why this happens. You would think in so many OS systems with the wake/sleep function that they would had perfect it by now huh? You may get some people suggestion checking your drivers, energy/wattage issue/etc. I personally don't believe any of that though myself. If it can operate while you are on it just fine but you turn it off and it won't come back on it sounds more like an OS issue than anything else.

I used to have the same issue with an old old Acer Aspire 5720z. I never found a real solution to it either.I truly think the only "cheaphax" here would be for you to just disable sleep mode.

You could see if this helps you any but I highly doubt it will.

Hope im putting this in the right thread.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50-110US laptop with Vista.

have not had any problems with it until a few minutes ago. I was moving it so I closed the lid and unplugged the power cable with it still turned on. Whenever I do this it goes into some kind of sleep mode which I can sometimes get it to wake up from and other times I have to reboot. I couldnt get it to 'wake up' so I tried rebooting, waited a few seconds and started it back up, but it still seems to be sleeping.

It will start up and I can hear stuff moving around inside, the power button and the internet-connection button both turn on, but the internet-connection button is orange instead of blue (only does that while in sleep mode that ive seen) and the screen remains black. Also the button to toggle the touch-pad on/off lights up but it does not respond to hitting it.

Ive tried rebooting it 3-4 times but it never 'wakes up' and the screen remains black.

I am using a brand new Lenovo P51 with 64-bit Windows 10 with a NVIDIA Quadro M1200 video card along with an external monitor (ASUS VS228H-P) connected through HDMI. When my computer goes to sleep, my second monitor turns off. When I wake up the laptop, but 2nd monitor is no longer recognized by the machine and I am unable to use the display. I have tried a number of solutions already:1) I have tried selecting "extend display" under F72) I have tried using the detect display button in System/Display Settings3) I have updated my drivers for both display adapaters (intel graphics 630, and NVIDIA Quadro M1200)4) I have turned the monitor on and off,5) I have cycled through the input options on the monitor while it is on6) I have plugged and unplugged the HDMI cable The only solution to reconnect the monitor I have found is to reboot the computer which is impractical for me while I am using the machine (I am running programs over multiple days and rebooting is not impossible). It is also impractical to turn off sleep mode on the machine - the whole point of having sleep mode is to save my screen and reduce power usage. I also use sleep mode for security - I want my laptop to lock so that someone can't just pick it up any time and use it. I also read somewhere that someone was able to turn off and then turn on the display adapters to reconnect - but this is a ridiculous fix I won't repeat over and over again. Outside of these solutions, has anyone found a way to make Win... I have tried all the common fixes that i could do without a monitor such as using the keyboard or mouse to wake it up from sleep (which has always worked in the past), unplugging devices, hard computer reset, and swapping cables. Monitor works in another computer. It has never done this before. It's a custom built computer I did years ago. Has anyone else had this issue that found a fix that works? Hello Cavair,

You might see if plugging the wireless USB receiver directly into the back of the computer instead of a USB hub to see if may work for you instead. Afterwards, check in Device Manger in the Mouse and Keyboard "Power Managemet" properties tab to make sure that the "Allow the device to wake the computer" option below is checked.
Hope this helps

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

A:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

I have a R30208DY Desktop PC running Windows 10 in 64 bit mode with a VGA monitor and an HDMI monitor connected to the motherboard. All was fine until my Intel Graphics driver was updated. After this the VGA monitor failed to wake up after sleep. I spent some time several months ago with assistance of the Intel support forum investigating this. It happens even if I run with the HDMI monitor disconnected. I tried numerous versions of the Intel drivers, but the only version that works after 4300 is 4424. I decided to try periodically to see whether newly released drivers have solved the problem, so have just downloaded the latest drivers from the Intel site and from the Lenovo site and found that they still have this problem. I can reinstate the 4424 driver if it gets inadvertantly updated, but would like to think that someone at Intel recognises that there is a problem and is looking to provide a new version that repairs it. Is there any feedback to Intel from this support forum to initiate this process?

Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

For years I have had dual monitors working fine in my Win 7 machine. Then a few months ago I started having problems when the computer turn on or wakes from sleep mode. The primary monitor turns on then switches off after a second. The only remedy is to
turn off the monitor, turn on, and repeat until finally the monitor stays awake.

I have tried shutting down the computer and starting using the system restore disk - the monitor does not come on.
I tried installing a replacement video card (and turning off the motherboard video support) the problem is the same. This indicates it is not the video driver or physical video chip.

Severity: A

When waking up from sleep mode with a dual monitor setup, the computer does not display anything either monitor and has to be manually shut down. The problem does not seem related to motherboard settings such as Wake-On PCI-E, Spread Spectrum, or changing the suspend mode between S1/S3/S1 & S3. The cause of this problem began from a video card upgrade from a BFG 7600GT to an Asus HD4850.

The problem can be repeated with the following steps:
1.) Load Windows Vista after shutdown and don't log into a user account
2.) Wait at the login screen and then time 15-30 seconds before pressing the power button (assigned to sleep on press)
3.) Wait 15-30 seconds before pressing the power button again
4.) If computer woke-up, check off success on paper and repeat steps 2-3. If not, follow to step 5.
5.) Hold the power button and shut down the computer manually. Logged how many tries before it "craps out" from wake-up.

A:Win7 system or monitor not wake from sleep, solved?

KrisM, welcome to seven and thanks for sharing this info with us. I personally have stopped using sleep because of the hang issue and having to hard power off. I even stopped using win 7 and went back to Vista because of this issue but have since returned to seven for the many other new features that I like. I have long suspected a conflict with the USB ports and even moved my mouse to the PS2 port. I will try some of the things suggested in your post and see what works for my system.

Thanks again.

powercfg -waketimers
There are no active wake timers in the system

powercfg -lastwakeWake History Count - 1

My computer is to be having some problems booting when it has been asleep/hibernating/turned off. At first it seemed to be just when it had been asleep or hibernating, but recently it wont boot after being turned off for a short while (an hour or so).

What happens, is that after turning it on, I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, and nothing shows up on it. The computer turns on, it makes the usual noises, but no signal comes through to the monitor.

The only way I can seem to get it started after this is if I leave it unplugged for a while, usually at least an hour and a half or so, then it will either boot from scratch or resume Windows from sleep/hibernation.

I never have the problem turning it on at the beginning of the day when it's been off all night, so it's as if it needs to be off for a long while for some reason.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD A10-5800K and Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H, with 8GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Before going too deeply into this, if the light on the monitor is lit, try a different cable.

I have a asus ux305ca. Has a gma 515. Latop comes with windows 10 x64. If i update the gma drivers, either manually or via windows update (insider builds which includes an updated driver). The machine will work fine, but after sleep and you open the lid, the monitor won't wake. You can however install the older driver asus has on their website which will restore functionality.
Is this a bios problem or what exactly is not compatible with the newer intel drivers?

This is an issue that I've seen in two other posts, but I can't find a resolution: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/Brand-new-M715Q-will-not-wake-after-sleep/m-... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Enterprise-Client-Management/NVMe-Drivers-and-M715q-Tiny-AMD/m-p/370512... I've posted on those threads to see if somone had a resolution on there, but I don't see any posted. We are experiencing the same issue.  Brand new m715q with BIOS ver M11KT31A (3/31/2017).  Windows 7 preinstalled.  Goes to sleep.  When you move the mouse or touch the keyboard the screen stays black and it doesn't wake from sleep.  Tried upgrading all drivers.  No change.  Tried upgrading the firmware.  That was when we discovered the firmware will not upgrade.  Firmware issue.  From the TVSU program it runs through the whole BIOS upgrade process, shutsdown windows, then the screen goes black, the fans rev up, and then stays that way.  Monitor says going to power save mode.  It never continues past that point.  If I go into the BIOS system log it says "BIOS updated"; however, the version has not changed.  We tried upgrading to M11KT32A.  Then recently they just released M11KT33A.  Same thing, doesn't upgrade.  I've tried running the update from system update, from the windows command line with manual reboot, from a bootable USB stick, and a bootable CD image and nothing works. ... This is a new one for me. My friends monitor doesn't wake up when its in screen saver mode. Have ran AdAware and Spybot. I have also looked for anything funny in the properties to adjust the screen saver and power settings. I have found nothing unusual there. My friend was running an aquarium screen saver. But when changed to a windows screen saver, it did the samething again after a while. She has to shut down the PC at the power button to get her desktop back.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more
