New System... Horrid Benchmarks...

Q: New System... Horrid Benchmarks...

Hi all, I'm kinda new here, long time reader, first time poster, all that. Anyway, I have a problem maybe someone can help me with...

I just built a new system. It has a FX 5500 (256) in it to hold me over till I can get the 6800 UEE. Anyway, after getting the system put together and up and running and all that I decided to do some benchmarking to see how it was running and to compare it to my old system. Here are my specs:

Old System:
AMD XP 1800+
1 GB 133 Mhz RAM
Geforce Ti 4200 (128mb)
Windows XP Pro
DirectX 9.0c

New System:
AMD 64 3400+
2 GB Kingston HyperX Low Latency 400 Mhz RAM
eVGA Geforce FX 5500 (256mb)
Windows XP Pro
DirectX 9.0c

(Those should be all the pertinent specs, anything else needed I can provide on request)

Now here's my benches:

Old System:
3DMark01: 7,470
3DMark03: 1,359
Aquamark: 15,227
FFXI Benchmark Utility: 2245-High 2820-Low

New System:
3DMark01: 7,713
3DMark03: 1,538
Aquamark: 9,243
FFXI Benchmark Utility: 2035-High 3601-Low

As you can see my new system FAR out powers my 2 year old system, yet the benchmarks are minimally better, or even lower in some cases...

I've updated all of my drivers and everything, have exhausted everything I can think of trying, anyone out there ever experienced this problem or have any suggestions as to what could be holding the new system back?

Preferred Solution: New System... Horrid Benchmarks...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello forums, I captured 21 videos of different games and benchmarks of my ThinkPad X220 in order to help people who are interested to find out how much graphical performance the X220 has and if you can do light gaming with it and uploaded them to my YouTube channel. Have a look here. Ii hope they are helpful to make a decision for buying a used X220 :-) Best regards, Janni

A couple of weeks ago I tried unsuccessfully to install Visual Studio 6 on my XP Home SP2 box. Since then, the performance has been poor. One thing probably has nothing to do with the other but that's when I started to notice that Firefox took 10 to 15 seconds to load and the XP splash screen stayed up longer on a reboot. I've defragmented and run and error check on the hard drive and it has no bad sectors. This evening I downloaded FreshDiagnose and benchmarked the read and write speeds of the hard drive. The read speed is excellent -- over 200 MB/s but the write speed is pathetic -- 3.47 MB/s. This is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB SATA-II drive (the parallel recording technology.)

The CD benchmarks are pretty low too. I have a Memorex 16X DL DVD+-RW but the read speed is 3.67 MB/s.

These are all connected to Gigabyte 965SP motherboard having a Pentium D 3.4 gHz processor. Not overclocked and the temps and fan speeds are within normal ranges.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have 2 computers, very similar to each other, but one has a little better specs. However, the "better" computer runs worse than the slower computer in games, and 3D performance, with the SAME video card. What is going on here? Here are the specs of the 2 systems:

Older PC (I'll call this one Beige):
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
333 MHz FSB
Asus P4PE motherboard
896 MB RAM
IDE hard drive
Nvidia Geforce 6200, 256MB ram (newest drivers as of yesterday)
Passmark Score: 241 - 242

Newer PC (I'll call this one Black):
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
400 MHz FSB
Asus P4S8X-MX
1 GB PC3200 Kingston RAM
SATA hard drive
Nvidia Geforce 6200, 256MB ram (newest drivers as of yesterday) (physically the same card I swapped it between the 2)
Passmark Score: 287 - 291

I was trying to play War3 on the new black computer and the video was kind of choppy, and unplayable, so I formatted my old beige computer and it ran fine, just like it is supposed to. I have a fresh windows install on my new computer, and I even uninstalled my virus scanner just to be sure that wasn't affecting it. I always run a very clean system, and the only other background tasks running other than windows processes would be nvsvc32.exe from nvidia. Here is a comparison of the benchmarks I ran with Passmark's Performance Test:

3D Video:
Does anyone have any idea why the same video card would offer worse 3D performance in a "faster" system? I'm stumped, and I'd really li... Read more

A:Horrid Computer Problems

Get comfy.....this is gonna take some time to clean fully......

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create... Read more

Upon each login a bubble persistantly reminds me that a driver (directCD) has been disabled because it may cause the system (Windows XP Pro) to become unstable. It is frustrating to see this every time and it is causing me to become unstable because it came from my own carelessness. I inserted a cd-rw into my cd/dvd recordable drive and saw this message:

<i>Adaptec Setup Wizard

A disk has been inserted that requires the Adaptec UDF Reader. This setup wizard installs the Adaptec UDF Reader for Windows 95/Windows NT. Do you wish to continue?</i>

I foolishly answered yes and rebooted as it told me to. Then came the bubble alert. Clicking it gave me this message:

Roxio, Inc.

So hello everyone I am new to this site, thank you google.

My PC is having MAJOR issues and im a confused newblet when it comes to all this stuff..

I listed my PC specs in my member creation, so I will skip to the issues.

Thank you in advance for all the help you may be able to provide.

It started a couple weeks ago when I started getting random window vista security pop ups warning me bout threats and telling me I had to log in and pay for protection. I believe I clicked on them but Im poor and couldnt afford to buy it or I would have!! When the popups became annoying enough I decided to google the pop ups and found out they were a virus of some kind and so I downloaded Spybot search and destroy. That thing is more confusing then anythign I have ever seen I allowed some stuff denied others I couldnt figure out what it was saying! A few nights ago I was playing Final fantasy XI and it froze up completely. I rebooted my PC and every time I tried to load the game it would freeze the entire PC and I had to manually hit the power button to reboot. Then my graphics went completely haywire. So Im thinking graphics card issue .. I rebooted again and the graphics were the same. So a friend told me to do a system restore to an earlier point before the graphics went crazy, I did and updated my graphics card drivers. Seem to be okay, and I went to sleep. This am the graphics were completely crazy again and I rebooted, did the system restore trick again and nothing. I rebooted the PC... Read more

Running XP Pro on a PC.

Immediately after logging into the admin account the PC fails to respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (wireless) and the cursor hangs. Sometimes it is fine after a manual restart. It recognises the buttons at the top of the keyboard (those manufacturer's extras) but if for instance I press the Power button it comes up with a dialog to confirm but of course doesn't recognise the Enter key! So I have to power off manually. It doesn't do this on other accounts. We've had this PC for about 3 years and not installed anything lately so I can't account for this. The fact it recognises some keys and that this only happens in the admin account suggests it isn't the (Advent) wireless keyboard and mouse playing up.

In the guest account, after a few minutes online the hardware can suddenly start making bad noises and after a minute it freezes up entirely. This doesn't seem to be quite the same thing as the above. It also does this when running Chkdsk, on the second test at 10%, so I switch it off and on, skip the check and cross my fingers. The noise is a heartbeat rhythm comprising a click and a squeak. I thought it could be the CD drive but opening that (it is empty) makes no difference. If I restart (manually) instead of switching off and then on, the noise continues and it freezes again.

I am worried about whether the PC will continue to do this if I try other diagnose/repair software. Of course to download anything like H... Read more

A:Sudden horrid problems

First of all, make backups of all your data. You should have done that anyway. Failures occur all the time, and often without even the warnings you are getting now.

Get a disk imaging application. Then you will have a complete backup of your system even if the hard drive fails. The first time you lose everything on your machine and then restore it from a backed up image, you will be very glad you invested the $49 or whtever for the security of keeping your data safe.

Your current problem could well be the beginnings of drive failure. It may be malware, too, and you should scan with whatever tools you use (more than one).

If the Admin profile is corrupted, you may have little choice but to reinstall or at least run a repair installation.

But chkdsk /r on all drives is a start. Disk errors only get worse with time. Stopping chkdsk before it finishes creates more errors. Boot from the XP CD, log into the Recovery Console, type "map" to see all your drive assignments, and then run chkdsk X: /r on all your drives (where X: is the drive letter of the drive you wish to scan).

If chkdsk doesn't help, we can test the memory and drive. Yes, I have kept in mind that at least one account seems to be fine. It's possibly just luck.

A month ago (5/2/17), I sent my Thinkpad Yoga 14 (best buy version) to the depot for the following issues:-Computer will not boot, continuously restarts with the error 0xc000021a and cannot fix-Battery wears quickly, went from 8 hours to 5 hours of battery life within 3 months-Discoloration on the left top corner of screen, where it should be black it looks green on startup-Letter 'i" key is stiff on keyboard compared to other keys I have spent the last month waiting on an internal battery parts hold from depot. I had the case escalated from depot to Lenovo in order to resolve the issue. The options I was given were:1. Get a full refund in 5-7 MORE business days (meaning what you paid for the computer, pointless because I bought the computer at a discount)2. Get computer replaced by the Yoga 460 (which does not have NVIDIA 940M like my machine, so a downgrade, not a replacement) Neither of the options were sensible. Yesterday, I cancelled the depot request and received the machine today (6/1/17). After all this time, I expected that all the other issues (except for the battery ) were resolved. To my dismay, only ONE of those repairs was PARTIALLY resolved and the laptop was very dirty when I took it out of the box, as if someone was repairing it while eating. I just set up my Samsung Rv511 with Windows 7 and through the installation it prompted me to select suitable hard drive partitions and I became slightly confused and reduced what was to become my C:// drive to 40gb out of a possible 530gb storage and the recovery or D:// became my logical drive and now all of my registry entries specify certain programs to install on the C:// and now it's pretty much full. To combat this I decided to install Windows 7 on the D:// drive and set up new drivers and things on there, but from that point, even though the 530gb partition was recognised as the C:// drive, I could not get the system to recognise my 1gb nvidia graphics card, my wireless network card or any other standard hardware on that copy of the OS so now I'm stuck with two copies of the operating system and I want to just have an OS where all of my hardware/software works with a large C://. AdAware has been telling me that I have Win32.Trojan.TDSS

This tojan keeps recycling itself when I run Ad-Aware and wont let me run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It let me install it though, but only after I changed the name. It keeps disabling permission to access the computers registry and tries to stop me from accessing my System Restore which I got around by using a vbs file to access the registry which let me ultimatly access system restore but it seems to have deleted all of my previous restore points. When I try to start in safe mode, the computer crashes and when it starts in normal mode it usually gives me a blank black screen right before its supposed to give me the logon prompt.

When I restart enough times I eventually get to my desktop and the first thing I see is Internet Explorer asking me if I want to use it as my main web browser. (I use firefox). So its obviously accessing the internet though internet explorer.

I've scoured the internets looking for ways to get rid of this recycling trojan, I've noticed that with some programs i download, I can't install or run them until I change the name of the exe. Malwarebytes doesn't run even if i change the name of it, but I had to change the name of the installation file to run that.

Hi and thanks for reading.

I'm sure people are already familiar with this one but here is the description:

- Constant popups with fake virus scans claiming to be from microsoft but obviously not
- Threatening warnings of system breaches
- Requests to register
- Installed a microsoft-style shield on the toolbar which burbles about systems breaches every few mins
- Fake security centre popups

All under the rubric of 'XP anti-virus 2011'. (It should say XP in the title of this thread, can't change it now...)

I have other issues with my machine including lack of drive space most prominently, was about to install a new hard drive and BIOS but then this happened.

So before giving the logs from the utilities, I have to mention that when I ran GMER I got instant blue screen of death and I didn't want to run it again, so I'll await instructions on that. However the rest of the required files I have.

Other times the system hangs until it's good and ready to respond. When I open up the performance monitor I notice that disk Activity meter is at 100% with varying levels of Read / Write IO (typically in the tens of MBps), though it could be lower. Obviously this is nowhere near what the disks are specified for. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to validate what's wrong as far as diagnostic tools go? Chkdisk comes back clean w/o any bad sectors (though I think that could be masked by the controller and the magic of SSDs re-allocating storage to non-bad sectors). I recently also did a clean reinstall of windows and the problems persist. At first I thought this was maybe a bug with the Intel RST drivers ... so I did the complete clean reinstall and that didn't help. Very frustrated at this point as the tooling available doesn't have diagnostics for hardware. Lenovo's online diagnostic tool indicated 'Device not support'. And there are no BIOS-level diagnostics that I've observed as being available to run. System specs: P70 20ERXeon 1575M64GB ECCRAID 1 option w/ two pcie-nvme SSDs (the Samsung 950 or the 951's I believe -- whatever Lenovo installs).4k screen w/ the M5000M GPUQualcomm chip installed. Also, firmware on the SSDs is patched per the available lenovo update site.Latest win 10 x64 build as of the date of this writing w/ all updates ins... Hello, Everyone I was wondering how do my benchmarks add up if they are strong or weak in performancew for the last few days i was using msi kombuster but with crappy results ussually round 3464 tottal score

This was bugging me for a few days wondering why my card sucks so much im running a hd 5770 now that i discovered a more updated version of msi kombuster these are my new results can someone tell me if good or bad i just did one test not even in full screen next test will be the 1680/1050 full screen im submitting the first three shots and from there i hope to hear some feedback i also couldn't adjust the first resolution it went back to those setting

Thank you in advanced

A:My Benchmarks

Good scores. I have to admit, the 5770 is a better card than the 260 in a lot of ways, but its driver support was so bad that I returned the card out of being sick of it...

Other than that, looks like its doing good.

I just got a new laptop and was wondering what kinds of benchmarks would be good to make sure it performs as well as it should. I'd like to know how to compare it to similarly configured laptops in games and multimedia applications.

Also, is there a way for me to see the make of RAM I have. I know how to find out the amount, but it never says the manufacturer.

A quick search for laptop benchmark came up with this CNet page. It shows how they benchmark their laptops, and what programs they use to do it. Worth giving a quick read, at least.

To find out the make of your ram, you can run CPU-Z. It's free, you can download it by clicking the link under 'latest version' in the top left corner of that page. When you run it, click the SPD tab, and it will show vendor information, if it's possible to show it for your system. Some RAM manufacturers don't show, I think. Otherwise, you could just open your memory access panel on your laptop, and take the sticks out (while the laptop is off, of course), there should be a sticker or model number or something on them. Put the number into Google and see what comes up. Good luck!

Long before receiving a P72, I had hoped to have been able to view some benchmark results prior to the purchase decision.  In an effort to begin that discussion here, I ran a couple of benchmark tests using MAXON Cinebench and OTOY OctaneBench on a P72 with these selected specs: Lenovo P72Intel Xeon E-2186M 6 Core ProcessorNvidia Quadro P5200 16 GB17.3? Hi everybody.
this is my first post on TechSpot...
and I`d like to ask a question(or two or three):what about the x1950pro AGP?
anybody seen it work?
will it really be coming?
Have I spent 200.-? on the wrong card?([email protected])

A:x1950pro AGP!anyone seen any benchmarks?

Funny thing, we were just discussing this in the Socket 478 thread in the cpu/chipset forum.

I don't believe there is any hard data on this and it's likely just a rumor right now. Similar rumors occurred when Diamond made a typo on their website and listed an X1800 as AGP when it was a cut/paste job overlooked from an X800 HTML page they modified for the X1800.

I'd imagine hkpc or Tom's/Anannd's will get some solid info should there actually be any hint of an AGP based X1950. For now, it looks like the X1650 series will get the best chance of an AGP flavor.. but the X1950 is still only "rumor" material as I know of no local oem's with even so much as a future SKU or partner hint for the units.

Curious about the relative performance of two of my computers, I have made the comparison using benchmark software I have on hand. Fresh Diagnose is the latest release, 5.80.

Here are the results:

Computer #1
Intel Celeron 500 MHZ
ASUS Motherboard
Ext. Clock 66 MHz

Fresh Diagnose Benchmark:
1538 MDIPS
Speed 501

Callmark BM System test:

Computer #1
VIA Cyrex 667 MHz
Soyo SY-7ISA+ Motherboard
Ext. Clock 133 MHz

Fresh Diagnose Benchmark:

Speed 669

Callmark BM System test:
Assuming these benchmarks are valid tests of system performance, is there something I can to improve the performance on the SY-7ISA+ system (Computer #2)?

I've set jumpers for the automatic detection of processor speed. What is the correct PCI clock setting and clock ratio for this processor? I'm using 133Mhz X5.

Does a Celeron processor provide improved performance over a similar speed VIA Cyrex?

Is there a better benchmark test for these systems? I believe Computer #2 should outperform Computer #1, but maybe I'm missing something.

I just upgraded due to a PIII 450MHZ chip ceasing to function. I went to a PIII 650E chip on the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard. I had the same motherboard with the PIII 450 and it was working fine for about a year, and that upgrade was from a micro-ATX motherboard for more slots and higher max on the CPU upgrade. When I took the computer in to have it checked for not booting they originally thought it was the motherboard and replaced it with a new one, but later found that it was the processor. So the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard and the PIII 650E chip are new. I had just re-formatted the hard drive for a fresh start and installed the normal programs and Norton Utilities 2000. Under the Norton UT 2000 system benchmarks my PIII 650 was getting fluctuating benchmarks from anywhere between 50.0 to 301.0. The computer's performance also coincided with whatever system benchmark that came up running slow with low system benchmarks and normal with the high benchmarks. I thought at first it may be the voltage supplied to the CPU but the motherboard is auto detecting voltage. I feel that I'm heading down the same road as my previous processor, and while everything is still under warranty, I want this taken care of as soon as possible. Can you help?

Hi everyone.
I`m out here hoping anyone could help me with my problem..
So. My R9 280X one day stopped working properly. It allows to launch the PC and use it. But when i launch any game it works until any 3D action happens. Couple of times i`ve launched GAUNTLET and saw a lot of ARTIFACTS in menu, whcih closes and exits to a desktop.
This happens with every game. It just laggs for a second or two (sound plays tho) And exits to Desk without any information.
Also All the GPU benchmarks Freeze after a few secs of work (sometimes whole PC so i have to restart it). I`ve noticed no exact GPU load or temperature numbers (it stays below 50-55).
But one benchmark (userbenchmark.com) managed to go through and showed extremely poor GPU results of ~10%(way below normal in 3D).
Also when i surf around on my pc quickly(swapping between windows and scrolling intensly) image freezes, turns black for a milisecond and goes back to normal condition as `twas. huh..
I`ve peeked into logs and it says AMDKMDAP stopped responding, which means drivers. (also there are some "kernel" errors if that mean anything..)
I used DDU and installed all kind of drivers which didnt help too. I reinstalled windows even.
Also radeon software shows a notification that it detected more than one displays connected while i`m using one.
I`ve swapped between VGA and HDMI. (before all these happened methinks i used both at the same time once, but i dont think its related.
MemTest didnt show anything to... Read more

How do I go about improving a CIS score? I'm confused about the benchmarks. Is this just a list of recommended settings?

A:Belarc: CIS Benchmarks?

You'd need to change the settings that are shown as failing. They give a description of each, but don't mention where to change them though.
Many are set using the Local Security Policy tool, or the Group Policy Editor. Neither of which comes with XP Home. You can edit the registry directly to change settings though.

This link lists many of the registry keys that have to be edited directly, and lists the recommended settings.
For XP Home, the Group Policy Settings Reference spreadsheet can be searched for a specific setting to find the key to set in XP Home.

To set File permissions, you need to turn off simple file sharing (Control Panel | Folder Options | View, uncheck Use simple file sharing, last item). For XP Home, you'll need to reboot to safe mode to see the security tab, or download the two reg files from this post of Elvandil's. Be sure to run the undo reg file when done.

These are just recommendations, and are geared more for a business environment rather than a home environment. The Auditing settings for example, forcing users to change passwords, only allowing strong passwords, minimum length, etc, might not be useful at home.

My score has never been higher than 1.88.

I have seen postings about computers being slow. Are there any benchmarks that one can use to see if the computer is running as well as expected, given the RAM and the processor speed? Many thanks.

A:Speed benchmarks?

When people say there computer is running slow, they normally mean its running 'slower' than it used to and want to know why. This is normally down to spyware, background processes, fragged harddrive plus any number of things.

As for benchmarking, there are many types Dhrystone, Whetstone, PCMark, plus ones for graphics cards (3D mark), look at the following sites www.futuremark.com and www.sisoftware.net.

However be aware that whole subject of benchmarking is a bit more subjective, the same cpu on a different motherboard will give different benchmarks even though the cpu is clocked the same. So just because your setup doesnt give exactly the same as someone with 'apparently' the same setup, its not worth trying to track down why (all very clever electronic magic)! Oh and benchmarks do not always represent a true real-life performance.

I was looking at this article that was comparing benchmarks of low-end processors. Generally they looked at Celeron, P4, Duron, and Athlon processors on the Anandtech website:

This test showed that the 1.6Gig Duron Processor and the P4 1.8A Gig Processor both out performed the Intel Celeron Processors. They only tested the one P4 Processor, and it was the cheapest one available on the market. I think a slower P4 processor would actually be a better buy, but Intel just does not make them. They would be a better buy than the Celeron's Available.

The Bottom line is a Celeron is not worth buying. They are basically junk. I think a 256k L2 Cache would significantly improve their performance. The present 128k L2 cache is just not large enough for the processor speed. So Buyer beware.

The 300a Celeron was the only worthwhile Celeron chip. It could OC to 450 & wasn't as crippled as the new versions have been ( slow FSB, small & crippled Cache, overall lackluster performance ).

For people that only use the PC for Office work, I guess it's not so bad. They don't heat much so they generally have very silent cooling systems.

Other then that, I don't see why anyone would want such a chip.
