hello there,.. please help!
i have Compaq Presario CQ40-717TU Notebook PC,
the problem is
my netbook support for windows vista, but i want to downgrade it to windows xp, because some school work still using windows xp. I've been surfing everywhere.
I can a lot of tutorials some of which is flash the bios. update bios with its high risk.
As for some of them give a tutorial to make your own xp sata, using "nlite" and I became confused when I have to find a suitable driver for ahci [CQ40-717TU].
to the seniors and professors. please guide
where I have to download the ahci driver?
how do I update my bios (I still lay the problem update / flash bios).
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?Read other 1 answers
I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.
Pardon me if my problem sounds little funny.
I have Compaq Presario CQ40, windows 7 laptop.3GB RAM,320 GB Hard Disk.
Since past few days i m facing this problem, whenever i put on my laptop, and when the desktop opens, my laptop hangs in another 1 or 2 minutes. i have tried this around 5-6 times and still there isn't any improvement. i have also tried to set my computer to an earlier restore point, and have done this twice, still no improvement.
Shall i run recovery, i m afraid of data loss.
Can any 1 guide me what could be the cause, and what could be the solution.

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz
Hi, As you can see, no available link for Windows 7. Please run Windows 7 updates FEW TIMES then post back missing driver(s). Regards.Read other 1 answers

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

I have a Compaq Presario Notebook computer with a 137GB hard-drive. I would like to install a larger hard-drive in the computer, 500GB or larger. Does anyone know the best way to do this? Also, I was told that I need to put the operating system, Vista Home Premium, on the new hard-drive once I install it. If this is true, how can I make a copy of the operating system on a CD or thumb-drive? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Hello all.Just as the title said.
My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply
I have started installing WindowsXp on my Compaq presario SG3540IL . But i am getting some problem. after booting form the cd immidiatly, the screen turns into black and shows the "GENERAL PROTECTION ERROR" with other text too.
PLease sugges me what to do.
How many sticks of ram do you have? If 2, take one out and try, and if the install fails switch it with the other.
Make a Memtest86 disk and test your ram.
Do not have anything extra plugged in (USB ports etc) that you don't need to boot.

Ok guys, im new here so i hope you can help me to figure this out.
I have been more than 3 days fighting with this an my options now are CERO. My problem:
Im formatting and reinstalling a fresh Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1923WM desktop, the first installation process that copies the files to the hard drive its fine, the problem starts when xp starts to install devices, it firstly was stopping at 35 minutes, i tried to find out the problem opening the setupapi.log, then i did erase the .inf causing the trouble and nothing. By the was i was using aXP version.
Then i tried with another disc, this time a Windows XP for HP machines, this times the minutes went down completely, the progress bar reached the 1% and then again showed me one gray screen and the system was hanging again.
Then, i figure out that the initial XP installed on the machine was the Windows XP Media Center Editio 2005, so i tried to install this with an OEM disc and then again it started to hang at 35 minutes.
I have tried other XP disc and nothing happens, i just can't get any OS installed on this PC.
Any help would be so much appreciated!
Sorry for my grammar im not native english speaker.

And it crashed today. I'm not sure why but I think it was because of Java
and the IE8 I just installed a couple of days ago. I went crazy it took me all day to fix it. It even changed from DSL to the wireless connection...what's really weird is I don't even know how to hook that up!
So anyone have the same problem don't want it to happen again it was a mess.
I think this would be better off in the Vista forum. I will move it there.
Hi, all. I always turn to you guys for help as I'm only a newbie. I have a two weeks old Compaq Presario R3240US with 512 ram & 60gig.
I was installing a bunch of programs and all of a sudden, I got the "A necessary component for this function is missing or damaged (c:\symantec antivirus\novapw32.dll)". Then the system alerted me to antivirus protection not being on then eventually firewall protection not being on as well without disabling them from my end. Last program I installed before all this hassel was the "Norton antivirus corporate ed.(?)" and I ended virus scan before it was completed because it took so long. I did have the regular Norton antivirus on my system but wanted to upgrade to corporate version thinking it was better. I tried to uninstall them but I can't even open 'remove program' from my control panel. As matter of fact, I can't open anything! I rebooted it up by taking the battery out so I could even reboot but it didn't help. I was able to access a few app on my numerous reboots (when I could've) but very limited. Semantec(norton) did take me to a webpage where they described how to check for virus. My computer couldn't even do that. Something about active x(?) and even when I said to install, it didn't help any. Then it said to uninstall and install again which I couldn't accomplish either. I did check for virus with norton antivirus cd 'emergency' check while booting u... Read more

It is not clear but is this the first install of Windows 7 on this PC? If that is the case, then unless someone has actually done it, then open device manager for each of the devices that show no driver and get the Hardware Ids. Then search for that device ID with Google to find the manufacturer and driver info.Read other 2 answers

@Tomja2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! There are two kinds of "upgrades" to newer versions of Windows -- one with an Upgrade Path, and others without. The Upgrade Path means that when you upgrade the OS, you can retain your settings, personal data, and applications. This is only offered (historically) from one OS version to the next. So, in your case, that means it only works upgrading Vista to Win7. Without an Upgrade Path, you would only upgrade the OS components. You would have to redo all your settings, restore all your personal data, and reinstall all your applications. Anything newer than Win7 is going to be this kind of Upgrade, basically a whole new installation of Windows. As to Win8, your best bet there would be Win8.1 -- if you can find it, as that introduced a lot of improvements over Win8. But, MS also removed the Start Menu, starting with Win8. So, if you decide on Win8.1, I strongly recommend you then consider installing a third-party Start Menu. And finally, I would advise very strongly against trying to upgrade to Win10. HP does not provide any Win10 drivers for your PC, and without those, you are stuck with the generic drivers Microsoft will install, and most likely, that will mean that one of more of your hardware devices are not going to functional properly. As to the specific programs, your best bet is to visit any support forums for the programs you are ru... Read moreRead other 1 answers
I tried to install windows onto my laptop. It went through the set up process, but when it got to the install part, I got an error message stating that Windows could not find a HDD installed on my computer. So, thinking something was wrong with the HDD, I bought a new Wester Digital HDD. After installing the new HDD, I again tried installing windows, with the same outcome. Someone has told me that Compaq is bad about putting "blinder" codes in their BIOS to hide the HDD from being overwritten. I called Compaq Tech Support, but because my warranty is out, they wanted an arm and a leg to "help". Is there any truth to this? Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
If this is a SATA hard drive, you need to install SATA controller drivers at the F6 prompt. Since this procedure needs a floppy drive and you probably don't have one, go into the BIOS and see if you can change the controller from SATA or AHCI mode to IDE mode. If have this option, then Setup should continue.

Hello. I just recently bought a compaq presario cq57 laptop from a friend. And I was told right after I paid for it that my friend couldn't remember the password so therefore couldn't get into it. Thus I too can't get into it and am totally locked out.It barely starts to boot up after turningit on when it almost immediately goes to the screen saying/asking for a password. And every time after 3 failed attempts it says disabled and gives me a special number code to go with it. The disabled code that it gives me every time is - disabled 69374099. Is there anyone out there that can give me the real/right password to put in especially one that matches up with the disabled number code error that it keeps giving me. Thank you all very very much. No the issue is the type of hard drive and how it plugs in, and you have this kind And an SSD is this kind: See the difference in the interface? So it is a round plug/square hole kind of thing. I could go on technically about different types of storage controllers and how SSDs optimize speed but the different plug-ins is a deal-killer from the get-go. About all you can do if you want to speed up hard drive performance is to find a 7200 rpm PATA (top picture) hard drive which will be significantly faster than a 4200 or 5400 rpm kind, which is likely what you had/have. I actually bought a supply of 60 gig 7200 rpm IDE/PATA laptop drives I use in my hobby of refurbishing older laptops. I don't want to sell to an HP Forum member (kind of a conflict of interest) but I can probably steer you to the place I got them if you will send me a PM. My real best advice is that your laptop if it were a car would be entitled to have "Antique" plates and is actually just a little newer than some of the "old" laptops in my "vintage" collection. The market is very buyer-friendly and you can get a laptop that will run rings around yours for maybe $300 these days and will allow you to use a modern operating system with some semblance of security. I don't think yours could run anything newer than XP. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.Read other 7 answers
Okay I have a Compaq Notebook 3.25gb running Windows xp home. Okay this is the problem... it wont boot anymore (not a laptop tech). Now I've removed the battery and plugged It into the AC Outlet...still no power.. so I'm thinking okay maybe it's the plug...Not!! I place that same hp adapter to another laptop and it works fine. Can anyone provide some instructions on what steps I should take now. I'm thinking it's the board itself or the pin connector on the laptop... thanks in advance here

The CD-ROM only reads orginal cd's but any CD's that have been burned on a CD burner it will not read....
Some older CD drives do have problems reading cd's.. Most of the new drives are labeled Multi read Not much you can do about it other then change the drive..
Make sure that you try a burned disk from another source or person... Just to make sure it is not a error in the way the others are burned..
The screen on my Compaq is starting to come thru scrambled. This happens all the time. Tilting the screen back and forth will sometimes correct the problem. However, I can only have it about 80 degrees to the keyboard which makes for a sore neck. Does anyone have any solutions? Thanks, Ray
Sounds like the flexible connector between the screen and motherboard has given up, probably with use?
It would need disassembly and replacement of the flexible mylar circuit. Could possibly just be a connection issue at one end or the other, which still requires disassembly.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX Notebook PC and lately I have been having problems with the computer. When I turn it on the screen is blank, and it seems like it doesn't log into Windows (because when it goes into Windows it usually makes the welcome noise) the Capslock light flashes, the CD drive works, the wireless light is red, on the left side in one of the USB ports it has a small light that flickers a bit and then stops after I turn on the computer. The laptop battery works, the AC adapter works (the light where the adapter connects to turns on when I connect it), I tried doing the thing where you take out the battery and disconnect the adapter and turn on the So everything works except the screen is blank, I connected another monitor to see if it's the GPU that's bad or my laptop's monitor, but my other computer's monitor doesn't detect anything which leads me to believe it's not my laptop's screen but something else. Here's the other thing though sometimes when I turn on the laptop the screen does show up and everything goes in like normal (the orange screen with the COMPAQ logo comes up, the Windows logo, etc...) but when I turn it off and then try to turn it back again the screen is blank, and I turn it off and on again several times until the computer decides to work normally. Right now I'm in my CQ56-115DX Notebook PC and I haven't really done anything to it and I am afraid to turn it off again because I feel like it's not going to work anymore (especially sin... I have this Compaq Presario 2701EA Notebook PC and it was given to me by my grandfather who has died so I don?t know any codes or passwords and I can get into the computer since there is no password when turning on the computer and starting windows. I am contacting since I am stuck since I want to get the photos off the laptop and some files and I don?t know how to. I first started by buying a Sandisk USB which could fit through the groove and into the USB drive. I put it in and it said ?Error loading newdev.dll Error preforming inpage operation?.
Then when I click on the usb icon in the bottom right on the taskbar it says
?HI SPEED USB device attached to non HI SPEED Hub?
I then says there are not high speed usb host controllers installed on this computer and then gives me the choice to select some.
This is what comes up!
The Compaq laptop has Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 2002
There is a floppy disk drive and I have a floppy disk but if I put the files and photos on the floppy disk I don?t know how to get them of and on to my laptop.
I also thought about buying a usb cable and plugging on side into my laptop with windows 10 and the other into the old Compaq and then seeing if I can transfer it.
Is there any way to buy a low speed usb which will work or a transfer device so I can still use my usb.
Just to let you know I cant access the internet on the Compaq since you need a code which I don?t have and all the networks are dial up and h... Read more

Earlier on this was working fine, but after they have replaced the mother board im getting this and after installing the sound drivers.
